Do you know the difference between a regular water hazard and a lateral water hazard? If you don’t, it might be a good idea to read up on Rule 26, which covers water hazards. Water hazards are marked with yellow stakes and/or lines and lateral water hazards are marked with red stakes and/or lines. Where you drop is determined by the point where your ball last crossed the margin of the hazard. It is important to note the term “last crossed”. Many times your ball will cross the margins of several hazards before it comes Message From Wilkes As many of you know, the 4th of July is one of our biggest events, and this year is going to be one of the best ever. We hope to see you here on Wednesday, July 4th! The Club is heading into our 25th year, and while we have gotten a lot out of our facilities over the years, we are updating some things in various areas of the Club. One of the rooms we are looking at is the Grill. I will update you on this as we move closer to a definite plan. We want to thank the Membership for such a wonderful spring. We know everyone has important things going on in your lives, and we want to thank all of you for your support and participation. We are looking forward to a great summer and look forward to seeing you at your Club! to rest. If your ball last crossed the margin of a regular water hazard (yellow lines and/or stakes), you have three options under Rule 26. 1. You may play the ball as it lies in the water hazard. Remember not to ground your club. 2. You may proceed under penalty of one stroke and play a ball as near as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played. 3. You may also drop a ball behind the hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the hazard be- tween the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped. If your ball last crossed the margin of lateral hazard (red lines and/or stakes), you have five options. The same three options as a regular hazard can be used with two additional options. Under penalty of one stroke, the player may drop a ball outside the lateral water hazard within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole than the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the lateral water hazard or a point on the opposite margin of the lateral water hazard equidistant from the hole. Knowing the rules means knowing what to do in certain situations. Remember these and you will know what to do the next time your ball ends up in a water hazard. An Inspiration I had the opportunity to meet Brandon Rowland from Jackson, TN a few weeks ago at Old Waverly. Brandon was playing golf with his friends from Jackson, and I saw them on the 15th Hole. Brandon was joined by Joe Richardson, Carl Kirkland, Dr. Ben House, and Mark Hawks. Brandon hit a great 3rd shot into #15 about 16 feet from the hole. He said they were playing for $500,000 on this hole (make believe). I asked him if I gave him the line, could I get a $50,000 commission on the putt? He made the putt and I’m still looking for my $50,000. This was a Great Day! This is a real inspirational story about Brandon who lost his legs at age 7. He received his Master’s degree from UT at Martin in 2006 and now works for Fourroux Prosthetics based in Huntsville, AL. He has made several television commercials for his company while playing golf and deer hunting. Brandon says, “The cool part of my job is helping people. Maybe this is the answer to why it all happened to me – so I could help others.” Golf brought us all together at Old Waverly. - George Bryan Real Estate Condo LISTINGs 1598F Waverly Place 3 bedrooms, 3 baths on the 10th fairway with excellent views of Lake Waverly. $299,000. All of last year I spent most of my time on the road with a single individual on the PGA Tour. 1207 On the road Tim and I have noticed a few similarities that you will find in profes- 3rd - THEY KNOW HOW FAR EACH BALL IS GOING. On the golf course the players know exactly how far it is to the flag. After they hit the shot, they will find the pitch mark on the green and walk off that distance to the flag. Generally they will do this on every shot all the way around the course. 4th - THEY HAVE PRECISE ROUTINES ON THE GOLF COURSE. Professional players know their minds can’t be sional golf - no matter where you look. variables in golf. To lessen the mental/physical strain, they 1st - THEIR PRACTICE IS DEFINED. They may be practicing with the target and getting away from mechanical thoughts. speed, keeping their head still, or any number of things, but it is defined. As a general rule, if they are working on a drill, then very little attention is paid to ball flight. If they are working on all commit to routines. By doing so they are getting involved This is what you can learn from them. Define your practice. Don’t go to the range without a clear objective. When you can’t complete your objective, Tim and I are ball flight, very little attention is paid to their swing. always on the back of the range to help you accomplish your 2nd - THEY ARE WARMED UP BY THE TIME THEY GET TO THE RANGE TO PRACTICE. On the PGA Tour they may go stretch before hitting balls - it doesn’t matter if you do it on to the “van” to get stretched out. On the Nationwide Tour you will see them in the parking lot getting loose and doing a series of stretches in the hotel room. This is critical, as they don’t have to wait on their bodies to be able to hit shots or get in positions. goal. Get loose before swinging. Take 10 or 15 minutes to the range or in the locker room. Know how far your ball is flying on the course. You are going to fix your pitch mark anyway right? So, why not walk off the distance from where your ball landed to the flag? Get involved with the target on the course. The course is not where you work on your swing. Get out there and get involved in strategy and targets. lawn & garden of the month Congratulations to Walter Fleishhacker Employee of the Month Melissa Cole has been a part of Old Waverly for 7 years as one of the Lodge Receptionists.
