Fan, the year’s most awaited blockbuster, boasts many firsts: Supermodel Waluscha de Sousa makes a dream debut opposite Bollywood’s biggest superstar. Though this will be her first ever movie role, Waluscha has acted with Shah Rukh Khan before—in a television commercial for a family sedan. Veteran actor Sachin Pilgaonkar’s daughter Shriya also debuts into Bollywood with this film. She is a theatre actress who has directed short films and acted in Marathi cinema. i sh I was tw i ns i n m y real l i fe . W ould have been so much eas i er to do th i s role – Shah Rukh Khan @iamsrk The film kicked off with a unique promotional idea: The walls of Shah Rukh Khan’s mansion Mannat PVR MOVIES FIRST PAGE 7 THE PLOT: Fan is the story of Gaurav (Shah Rukh Khan) a 20-something young man, whose world revolves around the mega movie star Aryan Khanna (Shah Rukh Khan) or God as he prefers to call him. From the bylanes of Delhi, young Gaurav embarks on a journey to the city of dreams, Mumbai, in order to wish his God on his birthday. After all, he is Aryan’s biggest fan and even has a striking resemblance to him. But things don’t go according to plan, and Gaurav’s love and passion for his God turns in to a dangerous obsession that crosses over from worship to vengeance. MAKE-UP: Special make-up effects for the film have been supervised by Greg Cannom, nine-time Oscar nominee and three time winner for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) and “Dracula” (1992). Cannom has not only tried out different hair styles, but also experimented with Shah Rukh Khan’s eyebrows, beard and scars. The dramatic personality makeover has been achieved without using any prosthetics. PVR MOVIES FIRST ACTION: Some of the most heart-pounding sequences in Fan have been shot in the Old City of Dubrovnik, Croatia. Motorbike chases around the old city harbour, jumps across rooftops and stunning stunts...this is Dubrovnik as you have never seen it before. The local Croatian crew along with the YRF team from Mumbai met months in advance to meticulously plan out these sequences. Acclaimed Korean action director Seyoung Oh, who has done the high-octane action for Korean superhit Suspect and superhero saga Avengers 2 was roped in to deliver neverseen-before thrills in Fan. THE APPEAL: An edge-of-the-seat psychological thriller, Fan is a layered story that gradually peels away at both Gaurav and Aryan’s personalities. As the story unravels, the two characters discover people within themselves that even they didn’t know existed. The film also lays bare the vulnerabilities of superstars, presenting them as flesh-and-blood people with real, relatable emotions. PAGE 8 TRIVIA TRIVIA 01 The logo of the film is unique—it features a collage of pictures of Khan’s real fans. 02 As you read this, the film’s twitter handle, @FanTheFilm, has already crossed 70,000 followers. 03 04 05 SRK’s character in the film, Gaurav (the diehard fan) will be seen wearing some of the actual clothes worn by the star in earlier films – like the hat and leather jacket from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Getting into the skin of Gaurav’s character was not easy. Shah Rukh Khan’s make-up took six hours every day. ‘Jabra’ is the first Bollywood song to be dubbed in eight different languages Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali Oriya and Bhojpuri. “It’s difficult to play both sides of the spectrum but in Fan, Shah Rukh Khan has understood the psychology of both the characters really well. In fact, there’s an action sequence in the end of the film where I just could not decide whose side I am on,” says Namrata Rao, the editor of Fan. THE ANIMATION A team of more than 250 technicians worked day and night to pull off some incredible special effects. “The VFX in Fan is done like never before seen in the world. Twice Hollywood has strived to do what we have done in Fan and failed,” says Shah Rukh Khan. Balki’s films always arrive like a breath of fresh air. In Ki and Ka, his characters switch conventional gender roles to create a breezy love story laced with laughter. The director reveals the story behind the story: How did the idea for Ki and Ka emerge? The germ of the idea was a simple thought. Most love stories end in marriage, but few talk about what happens after marriage. Also, “marriage” in the movies has mostly meant showcasing men and women in standard, stereotyped roles. I wondered what if I put a different spin on them. The characters in the movie...do they belong to Delhi, Mumbai or simply any big city? The film is shot and set in Delhi, but once you meet the characters, you will realise they could belong to any major metro city. This is the first time Arjun and Kareena are sharing the screen, PVR MOVIES FIRST GUEST INTERVIEW but you will see how effortlessly they complement each other. A secondary character or characters that you would like us to watch out for. Of course! The secondary characters are vital to Ki and Ka. Award-winning actor Rajit Kapur plays Arjun’s father, in a short but powerful role. And of course Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan reutrn to the screen together after a long gap, in an endearing guest appearance. Any twists in this modern love story? Every love story, no matter how fun and feisty, has its ups and downs. Ki and Ka has its conflicts and bittersweet moments, too. Watch the movie to unwrap the surprises! Fill in the blank: Ki and Ka will leave you feeling.... ...that you wish life could be like this. PAGE 24 THE LIFE OF A LEGEND: Steven Spielberg PVR MOVIES FIRST ARCHITECTS OF CINEMA PAGE 25 Steven Spielberg Steven Spielberg is Hollywood’s best known director and one of the world’s wealthiest filmmakers. He gave birth to the modern blockbuster, co-founded two studios (DreamWorks SKG and Amblin Entertainment), earned 12 Oscar nominations, and gave the world E.T. Early Life: The oldest and the only son among four children, Spielberg was born to Arnold, an electrical engineer and Leah, a concert pianist. Steven shone at home under his mother and three sisters’ doting care, but didn’t fare too well at school, making average grades at best. He suffered from dyslexia and got bullied at school, but said he never felt like a victim—“Movies were my great escape.” Indeed, Spielberg would use his home movie camera to record camping trips and family events. At 12, he made his first movie from a script he had written. His alma mater California State College had no formal film program, so he graduated in English. But he watched every movie he could, and cajoled PVR MOVIES FIRST ARCHITECTS OF CINEMA the guards at Universal Studios to let him watch major movies being filmed. Years later, he would helm Hollywood’s biggest projects at the studios he had once gatecrashed. His Films: In a career spanning nearly four decades, Steven Spielberg has made more than 50 films, evoking fear, awe, wonder and joy in our hearts. Spielberg’s first directorial effort was a television movie named Duel, featuring a battle of wits between an ordinary man driving a car and a crazed driver of an eighteen-wheeler truck. It took 16 days to make, and earned over $5 million worldwide. A director had arrived. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), perhaps Spielberg’s most personal film, dealt with the heroic efforts of average middle-class Americans to make contact with visitors from another planet. The “Indiana Jones” trilogy (1981–1989), E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and The Color Purple (1985) established Spielberg among movie-making greats, drawing multiple awards, nominations and profits his way. PAGE 26 Bet You Didn’t Know: • Do you know who appeared the most in Spielberg’s movies? Tom Cruise? Richard Dreyfuss? Tom Hanks? Nope! Steven Spielberg cast his dog, cocker spaniel Elmer, in some of his most famous movies. The director turned creative mogul when he formed DreamWorks studios with Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen in 1994. And when Queen Elizabeth bestowed an honorary knighthood on him, the anointment of Steven Spielberg as Hollywood’s greatest living legend was official. • When Spielberg was 16, he made a sci-fi flick, Firelight, on a budget of just $500, shot in his gargage and starring his high school friends. He even scored the music for the film on clarinet! His father screened the movie for 500 people in Phoenix Little Theatre, Arizona. The admission fee was $1 per person, but one guest must have paid double because Spielberg made a profit of one dollar. • Spielberg is a quirky eater. He eats only organic, avoids spicy food, and loathes the beverage most creative people love. “I don’t drink coffee. I’ve never had a cup of coffee in my entire life. That’s something you probably don’t know about me. I’ve hated the taste since I was a kid.” Spielberg’s 1993 mega-hit Jurassic Park featured a present day theme park with genetically engineered dinosaurs as the main attraction. Four years later, he released its sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997. Perhaps his most poignant work was Schindler’s List (1993), filmed in black and white. It drew from the real-life story of German businessman Oskar Schindler, who saved thousands of his Jewish factory workers during the Holocaust. The picture won the 1993 Best Picture Academy Award and Spielberg won Best Director. In 1999 he won both the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Director for Saving Private Ryan. Spielberg’s cinema is rich in special effects and visual appeal. Kids in danger. Characters staring at something off screen. Long sideways tracking shots. The use of the piano in key scenes. Although movie cameras had focused on jurors many a time before, the way Twelve Angry Men managed to do it took this tautly scripted drama far beyond the closed confines of its jury room setting. No wonder it is cited as the greatest courtroom drama of all, even though you never get to see any of the actual trial. The Plot: An eighteen-year-old,slum-dwelling Puerto Rican boy is accused of stabbing his father to death and faces the electric chair if convicted. It’s an open-andshut case for eleven of the jurors who believe the boy is guilty. Only one, Juror #8 (Henry Fonda) has doubts. He begs his colleagues to look closely at the facts of the trial. What results is a study in humanity as each of the jurors faces his own prejudices and emotions. Incidentally, 12 Angry Men was Sidney Lumet’s directorial debut, a fact that remains massively impressive considering the film’s meticulous craft and pacing. He succeeds in making almost every shot and line of dialogue count. Henry Fonda gives a natural yet strikingly effective performance as the open-minded juror whose logical reasoning implants facts and doubts into the minds of his colleagues. Wow Factor: The movie is a textbook example of how the basic principles of composition can change the mood of a scene. At the beginning of the film, the cameras are all positioned above eye level and we look down on the characters, suggesting they can be comprehended and mastered. By the end, they loom over us, and we feel overwhelmed by the force of their passion. 3 MORE from LUMET’S MASTERCLASS DOG DAY AFTERNOON (1975) * Al Pacino, John Cazale, Penelope Allen NETWORK (1976) * Faye Dunaway, William Holden, Peter Finch Theme: A man robs a bank to pay for his lover’s operation; it turns into a hostage situation and a media circus.
