New halls transform DAISY HILL
—VOICES OF EXPERIENCE—

place my home.
TIMELINE
CONTRACT
Your options
Sign your housing
contract after
you’re admitted—
• Private room, semi-private bath
• Residence hall double rooms,
community bath
• Suites with semi-private baths
• Scholarship halls
the sooner the better.
September 1
After you’re admitted and have your KU ID number and KU online ID, go to housing.ku.edu.
Follow the instructions to sign a housing contract so you may be first in line to choose a room
in the spring. Once you’ve signed a contract, you also may submit additional materials to apply
for a scholarship hall. Scholarship halls involve a competitive selection based on academic merit
and financial need.
November 1
Student Housing begins reviewing scholarship hall applications and making
offers the last week of each month. Offers are sent throughout spring.
February
VISIT
housing.ku.edu
for instructions to
sign an online contract.
As with all contracts,
cancellation fees will apply.
High School Juniors
In August, before your senior
year in high school, visit the
housing website.
• Begin making decisions
about room type and cost.
• Plan to sign your contract as
soon as you’re admitted. That
puts you among the first to
choose a room.
Returning residents are first in line to select room
and roommates.
March 1 – Scholarship Halls
Scholarship hall application initial deadline. If you
don’t receive a fall offer you can be considered
in spring.
March – Residence Halls
New residents begin selecting rooms
and roommates online. You may
choose roommates or go potluck.
If you have preferred roommates,
all must sign housing contracts
before selecting the room.
—VOICES OF EXPERIENCE—
I love having people nearby so you can
ask questions and study together.
Finals week in a Gertrude Sellards Pearson
study room. RIGHT: Posters in the halls
are an important way students learn
residential curriculum themes.
IN-HOUSE RESOURCES
• Study areas are in every building.
Classrooms are featured in Daisy Hill
Commons, and GSP and Templin residence
halls. Academic advisors, Writing Center
instructors, and supplemental instruction
are available where you live.
• Housing staff are among those who teach
University 101. This two-credit seminar
provides an important foundation for
academic success.
• Learning communities allow students to live
and learn with others who share academic
interests: firstyear.ku.edu/communities.
• Wireless Internet (25 megabits per second
and up to four devices) is included in the
housing rate. Upgrade speed and number
of devices for additional cost: myresnet.com.
2
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
GRADES
On-campus residents get personal attention
and make better grades than other students
Grade-point average
What do students get?
• Nearly 10 percent of on-campus
residents earned a 4.0 GPA
in 2014.
• Help from RAs with one-on-one
academic planning and time
management.
• On-campus residents
successfully complete courses at
about a 10 percent higher rate.
• RAs conduct “check-ins” with
residents throughout the
semester to help residents reach
their goals.
Support
Students who live on campus
participate in Student Housing’s
residential curriculum. It focuses
on social responsibility and uses
personalized interventions to help
residents succeed. For example:
Housing staff will contact a resident
who regularly skips classes or fails
to enroll for the next term. Current
residents report in surveys that they
feel “cared for” and “have a social
support network” provided
by student housing staff.
Through the residential curriculum,
which also reflects KU’s academic
mission, students will learn
academic success skills, good
decision-making about drugs
and alcohol, self-advocacy,
communication through conflict,
living in a diverse community, and
involvement and connection at KU.
#livelearnku
• Roommate agreements that
establish expectations for
living together.
• Information focusing on
social responsibility
on bulletin boards,
print media and
social media.
• Activities that
provide the
chance to
hang out and
meet other
residents.
—VOICES OF EXPERIENCE—
The best parts are meeting people, the
helpful RAs, and the interesting events.
Your RA will invite everyone
on your floor to Rock-A-Hawk,
KU Student Housing’s annual
welcome event.

12 SCHOLARSHIP HALLS
SCHOL HALLS
The “scholarship” is a lower housing rate because
everyone helps with cooking and other chores
You’d be a great fit for
a scholarship hall if:
• You’re a first-generation
college student and diversity,
collaboration, and a small
community are important to you.
• You take your college success
seriously and welcome “student
success” meetings to plan your
academic program with graduate
student mentors.
Crawford Community Center,
1346 Louisiana, serves as a meeting
place for all 12 scholarship halls.
• You see yourself as a future
KU campus leader.
• You’re looking for creative
ways to fund your college
living expenses.
A scholarship is not required to live
in this tradition-filled community.
It’s conveniently located on the
main campus. And it’s such a closeknit community that many students
live here for four years.

LIVE ON CAMPUS
ADVANTAGES
Live on campus so you can focus on school
(while we handle other important details)
On campus
One convenient bill. The charge
appears on your KU e-bill
each semester. Your housing
contract includes dining.
Affordability. KU residence hall
rates are nearly $2,000 less per year
than the national average for
public schools, according to the
College Board.

Living cooperatively is
ecologically sustainable. You
don’t need a car — you can bike,
walk or take a bus to class.
A green environment. Student
Housing and KU Dining reuse,
reduce and recycle. We buy
energy-saving appliances
and equipment, energyefficient windows,
furniture made from
post-consumer
materials, and
sustainable wood
products.
Events and activities. We’ll help
you get connected and engaged in
the life of the university.

apartments) allow you to increase
your independence during your
four-year college career without
losing conveniences, including
dining plans, and community.
