Representing the Izimbali Group of women from SOWETO South Africa. A self-help initiative giving employment to women.
Made in Z-a was established in the year 2000 to promote
products made in South Africa. Over the years the company
has formed associations with various small and medium sized
studio and manufacturing concerns to collectively design and
market products on both the local and international markets.
Made in Z-A currently works with Muzeum Creations and
Gina Lolla in the development and marketing of the designs
that are presented in this catalogue

which is a self -help initiative giving employment to women.
In 2005, Made in Z-A started mentoring the Izimbali Group
(izimbali ….the Zulu word for flowers) Most of the women live in
SOWETO, a township on the outskirts of Johannesburg.
Travelling to and from work is now costly and time consuming so
the women work from home after they have undergone an
initial intensive training period. Some of the women use the
Izimbali Group as a stepping stone to setting up their own small
businesses or to earn an income while studying further.

Because the products are hand made we are able to adapt
the designs to any requirements. We are able to deliver in a
short lead time as the more orders we get, the more women we
employ. The company has successfully exported the products
made by the Izimbali Group to Germany, France, Italy, Spain,
Denmark, The UK, The USA and Japan,

The button rings are made by the Izimbali Group and the
brass ring base is made by the wire and bead artists that
sell their craft from the streets of Johannesburg
Because many of the buttons used in the rings are over
fifty years old it is not possible to always get repeats of the
same designs. Consequently we have grouped the rings
into 7 different colour ways for easy reference.

the buttons used are over fifty years old it is
difficult to repeat exact designs so they come in
