Access to Higher Education Diploma: (Fashion Media & Communication)! ! Introduction To Photography Evidence for Assessment! ! ! ! Name: Mason Galloway Thomas Student no: THO13403718 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Date: ! 25.11.2013! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Part 1: The Photography Notebook! ! ! Selective Focus ! ! To make this photograph I put my camera on manual focus so I could get the subject I wanted in focus whilst having the image I didn’t want in focus (in this case the face in the forefront) to be out of focus creating the blurred effect. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! CAMERA SETTINGS: ISO 200 LENS 48 mm APERTURE f/5 SHUTTER SPEED 1/200! MOVEMENT ! ! This candid photo was taken when I went out on an exploration trip of east london with a friend and just happened to have my camera at hand to capture the moment. The movement of the head coverings is blurred. I set my camera on shutter speed priority mode and then set the speed. ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 85 mm APERTURE f 5.6 SHUTTER SPEED 1/100! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! SHORT DEPTH OF FIELD! ! ! This photo represents short depth of field as the foreground of the images (stairs and railing) are in focus. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 18 mm APERTURE f 4 SHUTTER SPEED 1/25! LONG DEPTH OF FEILD ! ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 48 mm APERTURE f 5 SHUTTER SPEED 1/40! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! This photo represents a long depth of field ! LEADING LINES ! ! ! The leading lines of this photograph direct the eye to the background which is not in focus. ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 32 mm APERTURE f 4.5 SHUTTER SPEED 1/200! ! ! The leading lines of this photo redirecting the viewers eye from one of the photo to the other. The fact that the greenery is at the edge helps emphasis this leading line.! ! ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 1600 LENS 66 mm APERTURE f 5.3 SHUTTER SPEED 1/100! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Perspective ! ! ! ! ! In this photo selective focus is being used to add perspective and depth.! ! ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 66 mm APERTURE f 5.3 SHUTTER SPEED 1/25! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! This photo represents perspective since the arms of the chandelier are dividing the viewers attention and working as leading lines ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 88 mm APERTURE f 5.3 SHUTTER SPEED 1/30! ! ! ! ! ! ! COMPOSITION ! ! ! ! With this photo I used the rule of thirds as a guide line with majority of the food items in on the right side of the photo but with empty space to the left to maintain balance and create a more interesting image.! ! ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 26 mm APERTURE f 5 SHUTTER SPEED 1/60! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! This candid photo of a women shopping and looking at her phone represents rule of thirds with the subject being in the central part of the image.! ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 900 LENS 70 mm APERTURE f 5 SHUTTER SPEED 1/125! ! ! ! ! Part 2: Photography Research Notebook! ! SECTION ONE: Photographic Technique! ! ! DEPTH OF FIELD OF PHOTOGRAPHERS! FIG 1 FIG 2 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Figure 1: ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! This photo represents a short depth of field as the model is sharp and clear and the background of the image is soft and undefined. This makes the model more defined which is necessary as the color of the model and background are very similar.! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Bently, C. (Aug. 2010), Editorial, Vogue Australia! ! http://data3.whicdn.com/images/12193564/rosie-tupper-by-nicole-bentley-for-vogueaustralia-april-2010-soft-focus-04_large.jpg! ! ! Figure 2:! ! ! This photo also has a very short depth of field as the model is in total focus whilst the background is blurry but is still able to be seen somewhat. ! ! ! Coburn, T. (Sept. 2013), Editorial, Vogue Australia ! ! http://attheloft.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54ecca8b98833019104a91db6970c-pi! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! SELECTIVE FOCUS OF PHOTOGRAPHERS! ! Fig 1 Fig 2 Figure 1: ! ! ! The photographer of this image is showing selective focus by having the models face be clear and sharp and the rest of the image be blurred. This technique is very effect as the neon signs are still conveyed but you get a sense of the emotion of the photo and its dream like state more so than you would with every thing in focus.! ! ! Lindbergh, P (June 2011), Editorial, Vogue China ! ! http://cdn.trendhunterstatic.com/thumbs/vogue-china-june-2011.jpeg! ! ! ! Figure 2: ! ! This image is composed using selective focus to create a sense of drama and dynamism to what could other wise be a dull photo. The model centered directly in the center of the photo with the rocks on either side framing her gives a bold statement and the blurred background add to the sense of what could be describe as almost a melancholy appearance. ! ! Travato, B (Aug 2013), Editorial “Silence”! ! http://bentrova.to/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/aaron-feaver_ben-trovato4.jpg! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! MOVEMENT AND SUPER REAL OF PHOTOGRAPHERS! Fig.1 Fig. 2 ! ! ! Figure 1. ! ! This photograph represents movement in an image. The dress is being captured in a frozen like way showcasing the fabric and design. This technique works well when it comes to creating dynamic and interesting images. ! ! Knight, N (Sept. 2010), Lady Gaga Editorial, Vanity Fair! ! http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tmS8vemaiB8/UbX6VwWt1kI/AAAAAAAACHo/ YjYZHEPVGuY/s640/lady-gaga-nick-knight.jpg! ! Figure 2. ! ! This image is a prime example of super realism in photographs. The image itself doesn’t appear to have major post production but the subject content is what makes it a super real image along with the high saturation and smoothed/photoshopped nature of the hair and skin. The image appears to be referencing female dominance over masculinity.! ! Klein, S (Feb. 2009), Editorial, French Vogue ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! COMPOSITION AND PERSPECTIVE OF PHOTOGRAPHERS ! Fig. 1 Fig. 2 Fig. 1 ! ! This photos composition has leading lines that direct the eye toward the center of the photo and the model. The photo also has depth due to the walls on either side creating the perspective. ! ! Parkinson, N (1958), Modeling Yves Saint Laurent’s first collection for Christian Dior! ! http://www.flickr.com/photos/53035820@N02/7794148382/! ! ! ! ! ! ! Fig. 2! ! In this photo the perspective and depth of the photo is created by having everything in focus but balloons in different areas of the photo. This composition creates the illusion that the photo is 3D ! ! Monterio, L (July 2013), Tatler Magazine UK! ! http://thecottoncandytherapy.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/luis-monteiro-fashioneditorial-photographer-london-a-02.jpg?w=600&h=290&crop=1! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! LEADING LINES OF PHOTOGRAPHERS! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Fig 1 Fig 2 ! ! ! ! ! Fig. 1! ! In this photo the photographer is using many different leading lines that are drawing the eye directly to the model. There is a leading line that draw the viewers eyes to the models hands and feet and also a horizontal leading line that draws the eye to the model as well. ! ! ! Jacob, A (2013), Editorial “Venice Streets” ! ! http://www.fashioneditorials.com/editorial-exclusive-venice-by-day-taja-wilhelmina-la-byalexander-jacob-for-fe/! ! ! Fig 2. ! ! In the photo both the fence and the highway are being used as leading lines. The fence give the photo more interest drawing the eye towards the central part of the photo and allowing the eye a place to naturally focus. ! ! ! Kolenko, E (Sept. 2012) ! ! http://smashmaterials.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Fashion-Photography-8.jpg! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! WORKSHOP PRACTICE! ! Composition and Perspective! When moving the camera to the left hand side of the photograph you see the objects on the right of the composition and then if you move your camera to the right hand side your objects you're photographing will be on the left side of the composition. ! ! ! ! SELECTIVE FOCUS AND DEPTH OF FIELD! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! 1. How the depth of field change as the position of focus changes. !The depth of field changes when the focus point (selective focus) changes depending on what the photographer wants to be “sharp” (focused) in their photograph therefore, the unfocused parts will be blurred. !Here, the focus is on the first bottle: ! focus on the middle bottles! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! DEPTH OF FEILD ! ! ! ! How the depth of field is affected by the change in focal length. !It affects the focus of an image and therefore, what others see in the photograph. !Short depth of field: In this image, Andrea (standing closest to the camera) is at focus while the back is blurred. Therefore, viewers will be more focused at Andrea because she is at focus. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Long depth of field: In this image, everyone is in focus therefore, viewers will focus on looking at everyone in this image because everyone is at focus. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Movement ! ! ! At which shutter speeds is the model frozen to detail T he shutter speed is of 1/125 s ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! At what shutter speeds is the movement of the model all blur? The movement of the model blurs from shutter speed 1/15 s to 2 s ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! PERSONAL PRACTICE! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! SELECTIVE FOCUS! Fig. 1 FIg. 2 ! ! ! ! ! Fig. 1! ! In this photo I wanted to have the price in focus with the vintage clothing out of focus. I set the camera on manual focus and then made sure I was happy with the composition and took the image and its leading lines and then took the image. ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 28 mm APERTURE f 5 SHUTTER SPEED 1/10! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Fig. 2! ! When taking this photograph I wanted to highlight the interesting heels of shoes that I found in Camden Market. I first composed the image to have leading lines and so it was esthetically pleasing and wouldn't require cropping then I set the camera to manual focus so I could achieve a blurred background and a more crisp foreground. ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 42 mm APERTURE f 5 SHUTTER SPEED 1/125! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! MOVEMENT! Fig. 1 Fig.2 Fig. 1! ! In this photo the women was pulling hard at an object on the wall trying to get it down. I wanted to capture the moment to have a blurred effect representing her motion.! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 80 mm APERTURE f 5.3 SHUTTER SPEED 1/6! ! ! ! Fig. 2 ! ! I was with a friend out exploring the city and going to a market and wanted to capture the motion of the people walking whilst my friend was candid and talking to me. I had the camera on manual focus so I could create a blurred effect of my friends face and have a crisp sharp background showing the people walking. ! ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 80 mm APERTURE f 5. 3 SHUTTER SPEED 1/125! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! DEPTH OF FIELD! ! Fig. 2 Fig. 1 ! ! ! ! ! Fig.1 This photo was shot with a very short depth of field. I wanted to capture the manikins features and jacket whilst having a blurred background. I used the manual focus on my camera to achieve this effect.! ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 105 mm APERTURE f 5. 6 SHUTTER SPEED 1/200! ! ! Fig. 2! ! ! I wanted to represent leading lines as well as depth of field in this photograph. The leading lines are the wall and fence respectively. The depth of field in this photo is very long since everything is crisp and there is no blurring or softness. ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 40 mm APERTURE f 5 SHUTTER SPEED 1/100! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! COMPOSITION AND PERSPECTIVE! ! ! Fig. 1 Fig. 2 Fig. 1! ! In this photograph I used the rule of thirds. I placed a grid over the photo to demonstrate that the man is directly under one of the lines. This makes a more pleasing and interesting image compared to having the man directly in the center of the photograph.! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 52 mm APERTURE f 5 SHUTTER SPEED 1/125! ! ! Fig. 2! To create a feeling of perspective I sat on the ground while taking this photo to achieve the feeling of depth as the scaffolding serves as the leading lines. ! ! ! Camera settings: ISO 200 LENS 18 mm APERTURE f 5 SHUTTER SPEED 1/160! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! SECTION TWO: Evaluation of photographers! ! 1. Juergen Teller Juergen Teller is influential to say the least. He is highly esteemed in his field and considered to be one of the best of his generation. Teller first began taking photographs whilst working the music industry. He would take photos for the covers of records. The first time his work was ever featured in a fashion magazine was in the late 1980’s.! ! Teller is king when it comes to telling a story through an image. Often using his own sense of humor as well as turning the idea of celebrity on its head when working with famous clients, the poses and emotions that are expressed by the subject are brought out and highlighted in Tellers work. His photos are often made to look candid and unposed with an overexposed lighting and an unguarded and often intimate atmosphere between the subject and the lens giving the viewer the feeling of looking deeper into the image than just what is seen and exploring the emotions displayed. Tellers style could be compared to Terry Richardson in the sense that they both use a similar lighting and background when composing an image but Tellers work seems less to shock and more to expose what is protected. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Hyperrealism is represented exceptionally well in a photographer like Steven Klein. Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue in America has said his work is “clever, conceptual, and ultimately lyrical.” His use of vivid bright colors and exceptionally posed photos to seem as if a moment in time has been captured is in stark contrast to some of his counterparts in the industry today. Looking at an image from Steven Klein you can visualize a cinematic experience unfolding before you. Klein’s work peals back the layers of his subject wether they be celebrities or models to unveil a personal side of themselves to the world. Things aren’t what they appear when first looking at imagery from Klein. The work he has done has been featured in numerous exhibits and magazines and he has also directed music videos for Lady Gaga and others. His main fascination and muse revolves around sexuality and subversiveness which can be seen in many of his images that he has created. Klein has said in the past that both Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon have been strong influences when developing his photography technique in later years of his career. Steven Klein is a mastermind when it comes photography and his pictures speak a thousand words. ! Fig. 1 Fig. 3 Fig. 2 ! Fig. 1! !
