In this presentation, California composer and Professor, Beverly Grigsby has film clips of
over a dozen recent international commercials given to her by Machine Head, one the
most innovative and famous studios for such projects, located in Los Angeles. Most of their
work is done with computer manipulation of sound. You have probably seen their
commercials on TV (Most are very provocative and amusing...one never forgets the
product).

I wi!( use transparencies of some scenes in the opera during a selected part of the music. I
would like to also include Bern Alois Zimmermann's "...The Turning" ( "Turning I Saw
Great Injustice" a closer translation of the German); a powerful work that Zimmermann did
(his last) in 1970. He killed himself five days after the work was completed. He had lost his
faith in God and in the goodness of man. That is what the work is all about. I saw a
production five years ago in Long Beach, California and it was sensational. In this case, the
orchestra (90 piece) is the noise maker (no pun intended).

Lastly, there is the music of Ernst Krenek's Opera "The Golden Ram," a work of the 60s
that used electronics in some sections of the opera (as well as a transparency of the first
electronic studio in which we worked together for this and several other projects). Krenek
was my mentor.

Also film clips of Jerry Goldsmith's work including "Planet of the Apes", "Star Trek", etc.
and video· film interviews with orchestrators, musicians, and Jerry himself on his use of
noise as an art form in some of his films going as far back as the 60s. Included is the work
of Chris Young who is a great young composer for film and has used noise as an art form
in his work. Also some clips of an early film Ms Grigsby did with Francis Ford Coppola.
