KATIE’S CORNER
Hello everyone,
Spring is here and this is the time where we see
a rise in Parvo virus outbreaks.
Canine parvovirus
type 2 is a
contagious virus
mainly affecting
dogs. The disease is
highly contagious
and is spread from
dog to dog by
direct or indirect
contact with their
feces. It can be
especially severe in
puppies that are
not protected by maternal antibodies or
vaccination. It has two distinct presentations, a
cardiac and intestinal form. The common signs
of the intestinal form are severe vomiting and
diarrhea containing mucus and/or blood. The
cardiac form causes respiratory or
cardiovascular failure in young puppies.
Treatment often involves veterinary
hospitalization. Vaccines can prevent this
infection, but mortality can reach 91% in
untreated cases. Canine parvovirus will not
infect humans.
It is important that everyone stay out of
quarantine, so no cross contamination is
SPCA of SWMI
6955 West KL Ave, Kalamazoo, MI 49009
possible. Other shelters in the area have
confirmed parvo outbreaks at this time. Please
remember to wash/sanitize your hands and
change shoes when you go home to your pets.
Thank you very much for your cooperation. The
SPCA stays great because of you.

Calling All Crafters
There will be an
opportunity to
help make craft
items on
Thursday, May
24th from 10
am until noon.
Any questions
contact Jo
Harvey at the
shelter on
Tuesday
afternoons.
If you have an extra Joann Fabric coupon and
don’t know what to do with it - you can buy a
yard or two of no-pill polar fleece and donate it
for the crafters. Also if you have any extra yarn,
it could be put to good use making cat toys or
hats and scarves to sell at Wings Stadium. Any
donations can be dropped off at the shelter.

Volunteers Needed for our Next Summer Event!
We need help putting together the “Dog Romp” – a fundraising event for SPCA at the
Arcadia Festival Place in downtown Kalamazoo on Saturday, July 21st.
Gun Lake Casino is on board as the title sponsor and bringing in the national Purina
“Incredible Dog Team.” These professional trainers and champion dogs will put on four
shows throughout the day featuring feats of agility, Frisbee, acrobatics and other cool
dog antics. We’ll also have side attractions like an agility course for the public, clowns,
pet photos, food, ice cream, etc.
If you’re willing to help, please come to the Dog Romp Planning Meeting on
Thursday, May 24th, at 6:30 pm at the Rescue Center. If you can’t make the meeting,
but would still like to help, please contact Ellen at [email protected].

AMBASSADOR TOBY
Toby, our
basset hound
mix, had the
opportunity to
visit two
schools this
past week. A
Touch of
Home, a
preschool and Ms. Kristi’s 1st grade class at
Schoolcraft Early Elementary. Toby along with
his human friends, Marianne and Jessie, told
the children all about the SPCA and how we
rescue animals. The preschoolers enjoyed
playing
chase
with Toby
and Ms.
Kristi’s
class of
1st
graders
asked
some
really great questions. Toby brought back gifts
from Ms. Kristi’s class, including some treats for
all his dog friends. Toby hopes all his new
friends will come by and visit the rescue center
soon.

ThingsTaDo Cards
Take to the Greens
On Saturday, May 12th, through a few
raindrops, the 92.5 ZUU golfers welcomed
us to join their event at Pine View in Three
Rivers. SPCA volunteers (Caryne Hanson,
Diane Pechota, Tracy Labadie with children
Julie and Justin Milliman) were on the starting
line promoting ThingsTaDo cards. The event
had several SPCA dogs from their Forever
Homes scheduled to help with the promotion,
however the weather kept them safe at home.
When we’re invited back [they say we will be]
the sales will double and triple - our dogs and
junior volunteers know how to fundraise!
from that event to the SPCA. That meant we
made $20 for each card sold. The golfers who
purchased the cards now receive discounts
at Pine View and 599 other businesses for a
year! Visit www.ThingsTaDo.com to purchase
your card online [state SPCA in the “add” box
upon check out] or at the shelter. Experience
the Super Book that “fits in your wallet” and
benefit the cats and dogs at the shelter too.
Thank you to the golfers who jumped off their
carts to see why the SPCA took the Greens to
save them some $ GREEN. We had a great time
and look forward to an encore performance
with our wonderful rescue dogs. Pine View
is one of many businesses who are selling
ThingsTaDo savings cards on behalf of the
SPCA of SWMI; please thank them by choosing
their course when you take to the links.
Remember, you’ll save at Pine View and many
other activities for your family with our new
fundraiser savings card.
Thank you Pine View owners and staff for your
support!
Canisters and Fosters
A new batch of canisters are
on order. These help us out
in several ways. They bring
in money, great exposure
and connects us with the
community.
The credit goes to Steve Scott, General
Manager and SPCA Pet Parent, at Pine View
Golf www.pineviewgolf.com for inviting us to
be at their beautiful course. The ThingsTaDo
producers donated 100% of the card sales
SPCA of SWMI

Also, there is always a
monthly foster orientation
every first Sunday of the
month at our Rescue Center.
For either a canister or if you’d like to become a
foster please contact [email protected].

ZOOkeepers Take the Show on the Road
The traveling cast of canine heroes performed for the students of
Kalamazoo College on Friday, May 18th. They even stole some of the
stage from the Frisbee Team and Cirque du K groups sharing the quad
of campus on a lovely spring evening from 4 pm - 7 pm.
Center stage on the beautiful quad of the College were your favorite
pooches direct from KL Avenue: Hoover, Luella, Flossy, Piper, Toby,
Doyle, Rudy and Cello. They walked, they rolled, they licked faces, and
performed tricks for treats. While delivering smiles all over campus, this
Traveling Troup raised $182 for the shelter.
The directors were none other than the ZOOkeepers, the student
organization from Kalamazoo College who volunteer at the shelter
several times each week. This performance was called Rent-a-Pup and
was held to socialize the dogs and delight the students getting ready
to take their final exams before heading home for the summer or
graduating with sights set on grad school.
Many of the ZOOkeepers are in the science and psychology fields of
study. They are just plain fantastic with sharing their time and talent
to advance the SPCA of SWMI in the rescue and rehabilitation of homeless animals. We are very
fortunate to have them join our other volunteers to find Forever Homes for this cast and many more
to follow. Thank you “directors” Annie, Roxy, Christine and many more!
Review by Diane Pechota, ZOOkeepers K-staff advisor. Congratulations on another great event to
Sarvie Bagheri K12, current Zookeepers President, best wishes for your next chapter!

Paul
Rue
Submitted by: Lynn & Jose Martinez
I’ve attached a picture of Paul (now Cabby), he
was adopted by us on March 3rd.
He’s grown tremendously and continues to do
so, and is staying healthy.
He’s definitely a goofball, and the perfect
addition to our family, I was looking for a
new companion after my father (who I was
the main caregiver for 3 years) passed last
Thanksgiving.
Submitted by: Dave & Patti Benson
Our family adopted Rue from your facility a
month ago and we are sending photos of her
leaving the shelter and with our family at
home. Her new name is Meeka and we’re
thoroughly enjoying having her as the newest
member of our family!
I’ve never had a Dog before and I’m really
starting to understand the meaning of ‘man’s
best friend’.
My husband and I love him dearly.
Thanks so much, for giving us a new family
member.
This is the most recent picture I’ve taken of
him, when he gets bigger I’ll update again.

Taylor
Emily
Submitted by: Kerry & Peggy Yoder
Just wanted to send you a note and pictures of
Ruby. You knew her as Taylor. We adopted her
from you on 4/18/2012. She had nipples
hanging 3 or more inches. Our vet, (Bergman’s
in Cassopolis MI) was able to remove them
with surgery, one week after adoption. She will
be with us 4 weeks, this Wednesday. As you
can see, she is gaining weight, and her coat is
starting to look nice and healthy. She gets
along well with our other boxer,Jade. They
have bonded nicely. She is a delight. I don’t
think she was ever in a house, as she has so
many basic things to learn. She is VERY happy
and enjoys her walks, free time in the yard, and
snuggling. She is very sweet. We want to thank
you so very much for taking care of her, until
we could come meet her and decide to take
her home. We are truly blessed to have her. All
of you at the SPCA in Kalamazoo will forever
hold a special place in our hearts. Thank you
all. Ruby especially says “Thank You, woof
woof!”

Good
morning!
Just wanted
to let you
know that I
took Libby
Lou (aka
Emily) to
Paw Paw
Veterinary
clinic
yesterday.
Everyone
who saw her
smiled and asked me what kind of dog she
was. When Dr. Baker examined her, he was very
impressed with her health and her disposition.
He said, “You have a great eye to pick this one.
She is a great dog!”
When we got home, I took her to meet a
neighbor’s dog that I knew she would like
(what dog doesn’t she like?!?). His name is
Amos and he is a rescue dog as well. He is
about two and a Golden Retriever/Great Dane
mix. OMG! They played and played! It was too
funny because Libby kept running underneath
him!
I have been working with her leash walking
and boy is she smart! She pulls minimally now
and when I say, “Back,” she walks a little slower.
She is going start training on the underground
fence tonight.
She is a VERY SPECIAL addition to our family!
