Some things to remember:
Any student absent from school must bring a note explaining their absence when
they return if you have not already phoned the school.
All parents, carers and visitors should only enter the office through the Front door
(street Side) and use the Parent/Visitor counter.
Please remember that for the safety and security of all children ALL VISITORS
MUST GO TO THE FRONT OFFICE and sign in and obtain a visitors badge.
All students should only access the front office through the back door (school
side) and use the student/staff counter.
Please don’t be offended if you are asked to go to the office to sign in if you are in
the school without a badge. It is for the safety and security of ALL students.
As always the number one focus for the year is learning.
Every decision made will be considered in terms of what is best for learning. As
always we will also take into account the growth, success, development and of
course happiness of our students as well as cooperation and consultation with
parents and carers and community.
When considering the purchase of laptops for secondary students learning was the
most important consideration. We believe that with access to this technology in
every classroom every day our students have a better opportunity to learn. This
process has taken 3 years to become a reality. 3 years of planning, saving and
finally purchasing computers. Just at the time we were ready to hand out the
computers we have found that there is a fault which prevents them from charging
properly. We are awaiting the supplier to fix this fault before we hand them to
students. We hope to be able to do this in the very near future.
Many students and their families have already chosen to pay the $25 to secure
their child one of our new laptops please don’t be concerned. The $25 is the
payment for next term’s computer rental. We aim to keep a term ahead to make
it easier for parents to plan - and remember if your child works hard participates,
in class and follows our Turtle goals all the time there is a very high chance that
the school will pay their $25 as a reward for their great work effort and
behaviour.
The last week we had an opportunity to meet and consult with parents and
community members. Those parents who did attend found it enlightening and ...

… enjoyable to meet with our staff and discuss the progress of their children in a positive,
casual atmosphere.
It would be great to see more parents take the opportunity to assist in their child’s education
in this way.
In
2016 attendance will be a very high priority if students are not at school they
are not getting the best preparation for their future.
If a student is absent we must be given an acceptable reason within 7 days or the student will
be marked as an unjustified absence. Once the 7 days has passed this cannot be changed
even if a note is brought in.
Too many unjustified absences can affect student’s ability to receive government payments
such as AbStudy, AuStudy and other centrelink payments. It is vital that you send a note
with your child on the 1st day they returned to school after absence. After 7 days, we cannot
change the unjustified absence.
To ensure the highest possible attendance we again have Rebecca Arthur returning in 2 nd
term to work in the community assisting students and families to ensure that every student
enrolled at school attend school on every day that is possible. If your child has an excessive
number of absences expect a knock on the door in 2016.
We are also continuing to encourage participation by providing an exciting range of
activities to extend our school beyond normal school hours for students who have been at
school as well as ensuring the highest quality education during school time. Our aim is to
provide every Lightning Ridge student with the best possible opportunities to learn.
I would like to invite all parents to visit our school whenever they desire.
Sometimes just because you would like to see what is happening in classrooms.
Even though we have a large fence it’s not there to keep out parents, carers and friends of
our school. If you would like to see a particular person or class it is always better to make an
appointment. There are many things happening here all the time and as much as we are
happy to spend time to talk to you about how we can improve your child’s education,
without an appointment you may arrive when we are already busy with something else and
waste your valuable time by having to wait.
School will be closed

HAPPY EASTER!!
Hello everyone,
I received the following in an email and thought I’d share it. Nothing new, but good to have what
you know reinforced!
The five keys to reading
Phonemic awareness: Knowledge of, and capacity to manipulate, the smallest distinct sounds
(phonemes) in spoken words.
Phonics: Learning and using the relationships between sounds and letter-symbols to sound
out (decode) written words.
Fluency: The ability to read accurately, quickly and expressively. Fluent readers are able to
focus on reading for meaning.
Vocabulary: The words children need to know in order to comprehend and communicate.
Oral vocabulary is the words children recognise or use in listening and speaking. Reading
vocabulary is the words children recognise or use in reading and writing.
Comprehension: Extracting and constructing meaning from written text using knowledge of
words, concepts, facts, and ideas
Just reading to and with your kids does it for me!!
The LRCS Reading Challenge finishes on 24th March. As I type this the number of
completed sheets is down on this time last year, but we often get a rush at the finish.
Next week we have the Visiting author, Samantha Turnbull
coming to the library. Students from K-6 have an opportunity to
work with Samantha on Wednesday 23rd and Secondary students
have Thursday 24th. Students have been preparing for her visit
and she will work with the different Stages throughout the day in
the library.
Parents are most welcome to attend any of the sessions. The
timetable is included for your information.

Regional Swimming Carnival
On Monday the 7th of March a group of kids travelled their own ways to Armidale for the Regional
Swimming Carnival. The kids who went and represented our school were Tallulah Chesworth, Savannah Chesworth, Lilia Taylor, Phoebe Taylor, Jada Seaton, Ava Seaton, Isaiah Seaton, Keegan
Brown, Allira Bleasdale, Brandon Dos Santos Hall, Katie Drew and Jaidey Samuelsson. The Secondary kids who went the next day were Charlie Taylor, Dyami Bleasdale and Catharine Sisa.
All the kids had a very fun experience, got their Personal Bests and did an exceptional job! Tallulah Chesworth, Savannah Chesworth, Catherine Sisa, Charlie Taylor, Lilia Taylor and Phoebe
Taylor have made it to the next level “STATE”.
The relay teams who were chosen to go to regionals were:
Juniors girl relay: Ava Seaton, Savannah Chesworth, Phoebe Taylor, and Allira Bleasdale.
Senior girls relay: Jada Seaton, Lilia Taylor, Katie Drew, Tallulah
Chesworth.
Both relays got first in their heat but were unlucky, they both did a very good job and swam extremely fast! All the races were very competitive but everyone got in and had a go. The North
West jumpers were grey with a dash of colour on the logo, they were very pretty!
All these kids swam very well and good luck to the kids at state. At the end of the day we were all
tired and ready to make the long trip home!!

Newsletter MC Class Term 1 2016
The MC Class got off to a new start this year with two new teachers, a new room and a merger!
Our new teachers are Mr Reavell and Miss MacDonald.
The middle and senior MC classes are now merged, and in a lovely new space. Some of our
activities to date:
As well as our usual lessons this term: English (we are studying ‘Story telling’ and ‘Novels’);
Maths, (‘Measurement’ and ‘Financial Maths’); HSIE (‘Geography skills’ and ‘Regional
Australia’); Science, (‘Mixtures’ and ‘Living Things’), PDH, (‘Staying safe and supported’ and
‘Sexual Health’). Our Project this semester follows the theme of ‘Belonging’, and we started with
our connection with the community, Lightning Ridge. Each of our students will choose one
aspect of The Ridge that they want to research in more detail, culminating in their own
pamphlet about their home community. This could be about local Sports activities, health
organisations, tourist attractions and will include historical and geological facts on the area.
This, the theory side, is balanced with the practical side, incorporating visits to areas within the
community.
Recent excursions have included ‘The Goondi’, the Aboriginal Keeping place,
where the class enjoyed a talk and walk around the many artefacts, facilitated by Tom Barker
(see photo below). Also, a recent visit from Ms Rhonda Ashby who shared cultural knowledge
and artefacts with the class.
Now the weather has turned a little cooler, The Agriculture plot has been a recent addition to
our practical lessons. We have our ’before’ pics, and now looking forward to the ‘after’ pics next
term!
Cooking class involves students researching their favourite dishes, health and hygiene and
shopping at IGA for their ingredients before cooking ‘the final dish’.
Respect and anti-bullying has been a constant learning focus this term, for the whole school,
reflected by our own PDH lessons and illustrated by some recent poster work.
We have been going into the community working with ‘Food for Families’ once a week with all
of the students helping out and enjoying this experience.
More exciting projects and visits ahead as the class settles in to an exciting year of academic and
practical learning - watch this space..
2016 SECONDARY NEWS
Secondary staff are currently involved in a new student monitoring initiative which is called
OPAL or Ongoing Performance Assessment Log.
OPAL is a system designed to provide feedback about student academic performance with a
focus on effort, application and engagement on a regular basis.
This gives important information to any staff member dealing with each student. It also
provides useful feedback to parents and the student themselves. OPAL is designed to be a
supportive tool and encourage students to give their best consistently. Twice a term classroom
teachers record a value for each student in the log in respect to:
Completion of assignments and assessment tasks
Homework
Classroom work ethic-application/effort
Prompt follow-up and completion of work when absent
 Correct equipment-books/pens etc
Opal values will be tallied and an average score generated. Depending on the average score an
Opal colour will be designated.
1.“Black Opal” Over the period of time a student achieving an average of 9.5 or above across
subject areas. This will earn the student = 10 PBL merits .
2. Blue Opal Over the period of time a student achieving an average of 8.5 or above across
subject areas. This will earn the student = 8 PBL merits
Please Note: For Black & Blue OPAL- the $25 computer fee will be waived.
3. Green Opal Over the period of time a student is achieving an average above 7 and less than
8.5 across subject areas. This will earn the student = 6 PBL merits
4. White Opal Over the period of time a student who receives an average above 6.75. W
5.Yellow Opal Over the period of time a student receiving an average above 6 and less than or
equal to 6.75 or they are borderline in a number of subjects.
6.Red Opal Over the period of time a student receiving and average below 6.

On Friday 4th March the entire school was involved in Clean
Up Australia Day. All secondary students (except 10 who chose
to study the environment at school) were allocated areas all
around town and the entrance roads to Lightning Ridge. They
collected over $600kg of rubbish in the 1.5 hours that were
allocated. The primary students cleaned up the school
environs (although it was already very clean) for a brief period
of time. All students worked tirelessly & showed exemplary
behaviour They were a credit to their school their community
and themselves.
Stage 3 would like to say THANK YOU
to all the people who supported our
Bulb fundraiser.
Special mention to David & Joanne Piper
for their generous donation.
We made a profit of $439.50 which will be
used towards stage 3 excursions.
