Dedication of the Payne House
T
he openhouse and dedication of the most
recent Habitat house, in partnership with the
Payne family, was held on August 11th. With
land purchased by Habitat earlier this year on Treetop
Lane about a mile north of Nashville, Habitat was able
to keep the Payne family near their respective jobs in
Nashville. This is Habitat’s 17th house built in Brown
County, a testimony to the ongoing commitment of
the community to support Habitat’s mission locally…
building homes and building lives. The dedication service
provided a good opportunity to begin the thanking and
recognition of the many Habitat contributors this year.

follow with our deepest gratitude!

equity” in the building of their home, along with
over 200 other individual volunteers.

This season as we celebrate the true “Light of the World,”
we at Habitat also celebrate the many who are reflecting that Light
in so many wonderful ways, following Christ’s example of love in action.

Habitat Receives Award
South Central REMC awarded Brown
County Habitat For Humanity special
recognition for their construction of a
new home in Brown County, which met
or exceeded their highest standards for
energy efficiency.
Rick McKinney of REMC commented, “The
home received a Home Energy Rating
(HERS) of 67 and an Energy Efficient
Rating of 5 STARS. The benefits of building
the home to those high standards will be
lower utility bills and a more comfortable
home for years to come.”
Denny Kubal, Co-President of Brown
County Habitat stressed how important
it is for Habitat to build energy efficient
homes. “Budgets are often very tight for
our partner families, so that any money
we can help them save by lowering their
utility costs makes it possible for them to
maintain their home at a comfortable
level for a long time,” Kubal said.

▶ Construction manager,
Raymond Pitcher, along with
Construction TEAM chairman, Jim
Drum, did an excellent job of coordinating the volunteer
workers. Together the volunteers put in over 1600 hours of work and
completed this home in record time.
Welcome Our New Office Manager…
We are very pleased to have Phyllis Bond join our affiliate as a part-time office manager.
For 24 years all office and management functions were handled by volunteers. The
decision to employ an office manager was prompted by the need to improve the level
of service to our Partner families and more consistently coordinate with donors and
supporters.
Phyllis recently retired from Ellis Floral of Bloomington where she was employed for
over 20 years. She is currently President of Tri-Kappa, having served that organization
as Treasurer for many years and as a member for 38 years.

Heartfelt Thanks
We are a small community of volunteers, totally committed to
providing affordable housing to families in need, so we depend
on a lot of people working together at this often daunting task
to “get the job done”. We want to sincerely thank ALL of you who
have dedicated so much to make this year’s build such a success!
THANK YOU!
There are two very important people who will be leaving us
soon, and whose vision, commitment, and leadership have made
Brown County Habitat what it is today.
Carrel Moore has his home up for sale and will be moving
east when it sells. As former President and full time leader of
Habitat, Carrel served in so many ways for many years. When the
inevitable problems were brought to his attention, his answer
was always the same, “What can I do to help?” He never pushed
people aside or ignored them; he jumped in and made it work. He
will always be our friend and inspiration wherever he lands.
Jane Graber-Davis is simply amazing! She is moving to
Michigan at the end of the year. We will miss her very much. She
also is a past President and committee chairperson for Publicity
and Fundraising. She did so much for Habitat behind the scenes,
without asking for help, just pitching in and
“doing the job.” She has a busy life, but always
had time to do more than the rest of us for
Habitat, never complaining, just working
hard. Her positive “can do” attitude
always made working with her a joy.
We are not sure how we will get along
without her.
We on the Board feel fortunate to
have known and worked with Carrel
and Jane. We are committed to making
them proud by continuing our mission
at the same high level they taught
us. Good luck to you guys, and come
back and visit us often, we need your
inspiration!
