Transcription

Planning the direction Lutheran Social Services will take in the future has been an important focus of the senior leadership team and the LSS Board of Directors over the past year. Our reputation, faith-based foundation, and history of strong
program management set us apart from other social service organizations while opening up opportunities to use our
strengths to serve an even greater number of those in need.
This is our call to action. As LSS works to build a better world and change an even greater number of lives, the basis of that
building plan is formed by the following strategic objectives:
1 We will strengthen our current impact.
2 We will expand our continuum of children’s services.
3 We will strengthen our financial core.
4 We will strengthen our people/employees.
As we adapt our programs to the changing times, we will be able and ready to concentrate our resources and our talents
where most urgently needed … on the greater number of children and families who need our help.
The children in our foster care, adoption, charter schools, residential treatment, immigrant minor resettlement, and foster
care transition programs, almost all share a common bond: they suffered some form of abuse and/or trauma at a young
age. This is why an increasingly important part of fulfilling our mission is to help break the cycle of child abuse.
LSS is in a unique position to change this pattern of abuse—through the continuum of children’s services we offer and
some new programs that extend this continuum of care. Transitional programs for immigrant minors and supervised
independent living (SIL) for youth aging out of foster care are two initiatives that will enhance and mesh with our
community-centered strategy, to better serve the children in Texas and Louisiana in the year going forward.

Foster In Texas (FIT)
LSS-FIT matches children who have been removed from their biological families
with skilled and caring substitute families in stable, loving homes. More than
800 children depend on our foster care services every day. FIT families meet the
demand for foster homes qualified to care for infants, primary medical needs
children, large sibling groups, and teens.

pregnancies, domestic adoptions and foster-to-adopt in Texas—Lutheran
Adoption Services is the first place to turn. There is not judgment or unwanted
advice, but guidance and knowledge.

International Adoption
Lutheran Social Services, a Hague-Accredited Agency, has worked in partnership
with other international adoption agencies since 1967, facilitating the adoptive
placements of several thousand children from other countries. LSS has interagency agreements with about 40 primary providers facilitating adoption
services in a number of countries. LSS is the primary provider with an accredited
program for adoptions in Bulgaria.

Residential Treatment Centers

Our RTCs are where children who need a structured environment heal from the
past, receive on-site education and trauma-informed care, and are exposed to a
better life and future. Last year we served 437 formerly abused children at our

Krause Children’s Center, located just outside Houston in Katy, serves troubled
girls ages 12 to 17.
New Life Children’s Center in Canyon Lake, is a home in the hill country for
young female survivors of abuse, ages 11 to 17.

Corpus Christi and El Paso Emergency Transitional Care

Bokenkamp Children’s Shelter in Corpus Christi is an emergency shelter for
unaccompanied immigrant children, primarily from Central America. They arrive
in need of a safe environment after separation from their families and long,
harrowing journeys.

In El Paso and Corpus Christi, LSS works closely with the U.S. Office of Refugee
Resettlement (ORR) to help migrant children begin new lives through transitional care in LSS foster homes.

BeREAL (Ready, Educated, Accomplished, Leaders)
BeREAL is our transition program for youth aging out of foster care in New
Orleans. These teens are frequently left on their own without positive connections and supportive relationships most other young people take for granted.
BeREAL fills this void, offering resources, academic support and connections
with volunteer mentors and life skills coaches.

Trinity Charter Schools
Trinity Charter Schools are on site at New Life Children’s Center in Canyon Lake,
Krause Children’s Center in Katy, and Pegasus Campus in Lockhart. These schools
provide specialized education for youth with severe emotional and/or behavioral
difficulties. This is a service no other children’s services agency in Texas can claim.

LSS Disaster Response (LSSDR) is prepared to step into the aftermath of
natural disasters in Texas, Louisiana, or Oklahoma – whether from tornadoes,
hurricanes, floods, or wildfires – to offer financial assistance for basic needs
in the short term and case management and spiritual care over the long haul.
Given the unpredictable nature of disaster response services, LSSDR continually works to assure that this program is ready to meet the demand if and when
it arises.

Clinic in Lubbock.
Our two Lubbock-area ministries serve individuals and families by lending
assistance during tough times and financial crisis – helping those in need with
life’s basics and access to health care.
Neighborhood House gave more than 21,000 individuals emergency assistance
with rent, utilities, prescriptions, and other basic needs. More than 127 tons of
food and hygiene products were distributed in the area last year.

SPIRITUAL CARE
As a faith-based organization, Lutheran Social Services makes optional spiritual
care available throughout all our ministries to all who enter our doors. We
believe spiritual support nurtures the human spirit, helping those we serve find
meaning, comfort, and peace in their hour of need. Spiritual care in the name
of Jesus Christ can be instrumental in restoring a sense of balance to lives that
have been turned upside down.
