Monday, October 20, 2014
See and be seen with South Texas' finest as you mingle
with friends on the beautiful grounds of the Witte

Bringing together all the best traditions of South Texas, the Witte
Game Dinner features one-of-a-kind silent and live auction packages, a delicious array of
game cuisine, and a rousing country music concert by Cory Morrow for kicking up your
heels at the end of the evening.
The 44th Annual Witte Game Dinner is sure to be a success with the leadership of 2014 Game Dinner Chair,
Jessica Erin Elliott. The Witte is elated to welcome Jessica Erin to the prestigious list of Game Dinner Chairs.
Make sure you are there! The Witte Game Dinner is the museum’s largest annual fundraiser for operational support
and we expect to sell out of Boone & Crockett tables early! Contact Lauren Richmond, Fundraising Event Coordinator,
at 210.357.1905 or email at [email protected] to reserve your table, purchase tickets or inquire

On May 24th, the Witte Museum launches the grand opening of
the brand new four-story, indoor-outdoor H-E-B Body Adventure
Powered by University Health System, a pioneering national
model to ignite transformative health behavior change in a fun
way. The Witte Museum has been part of the community, as the
People’s Museum, for over 86 years and builds on this equity to address the urgent
need of our community to find fun, exciting ways to get physically active, learn about
our bodies and discover our rich traditions of healthy eating and nutrition.
A Steering Committee of medical, public and allied health and education professionals
convened three major Science Summits and the message from the community was clear:
“Prescribing change is not as effective as inspiring change.” The goals of the H-E-B Body
Adventure are to provide a safe haven for learning about how our bodies work, to interactively
empower visitors to set achievable health goals and to offer visitors the skills to sustain health
and wellness throughout their lifetime. To accomplish these revolutionary goals, the Witte Museum
introduces peer modeling, physical activity, gaming technologies and a regionally relatable
cultural focus into an immersive, indoor-outdoor museum environment. The three key themes
of Health IQ, Empowerment, and Wellness shape the content of the components. In addition,
the H-E-B Body Adventure specifically aligns with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
curriculum requirements for Health Education and Science in grades K-12 across several dimensions.
At the heart of the experience is a system of networked components called the POWERpass. Visitors to the H-E-B Body Adventure sign-in and select one of twelve real Buddies to guide
them virtually through activities. Activities such as the South Texas Trailblaze and the
Pick Up Your Pace provide fun physical activity challenges, interactive computer games
like Build A Balanced Meal prompt moments of discovery and a real plastinated
human heart and gastrointestinal tract immerse visitors in anatomy. Wellness and

The World Through Magic Lanterns
Through June 1, 2014 | Piper Memorial Wing

collection known, The Jack Judson
Magic Lantern Castle Collection.
Visitors will see all aspects of making
a magic lantern show in the 1800s,
the equipment used and projections of
the final presentations.
The B. Naylor Morton Research &
Collections Center was named after
an extraordinary man and collector,
B. Naylor Morton, but what many
may not know is that the funds were
made available by his daughter,
Susan Moulton, to honor the man who
was an outstanding role model to his
peers, family, and friends.

Julian Onderdonk in New York:
The Lost Years, The Lost Paintings
Through September 9, 2014
Russell Hill Rogers Texas Art Gallery
Included with museum admission
Julian Onderdonk in New York: The Lost Years, The Lost
Paintings is an exhibition based on a book of the same
name by James Baker published by the Texas State
Historical Association. Dr. Ron Tyler is the curator of
the exhibition. Both the exhibition and the book
reveal that while Julian Onderdonk has heretofore
been considered a Texas artist, more than one third
of his body of work was created in New York City and
depicts scenes from the surrounding area. Many of the
New York works were signed with pseudonyms, each
well researched and documented. This exhibition and
the book bring these years to light. Most of these paintings
have never been displayed publicly.
A Witte Museum Trustee, Susan Moulton
is also the founder of the Will Smith
Foundation, a charity dedicated to
researching, assessing, funding and
monitoring exceptional children’s
charities. The organization is dedicated
to her late son, Will Naylor Smith. The
Will Smith Foundation is heavily involved
in the South Texas Heritage Initiative at
the Witte through the Will Smith Classroom
and Amphitheater at the South Texas
Heritage Center, and plays a vital role
locally and worldwide.
We hope you have gotten a chance to
visitor the B. Naylor Morton Center,
including the Dickson-Allen Orientation
Center, with themed cases filled with
Witte artifacts, and the adjoining San
Antonio Express-News Reading Room,
Peggy Walker Archives and on the
second floor, the Texas Art Gallery. We
welcome members to come or call
ahead for some special attention!

La Chili Queen y El Serrano
Jovita is the host of her family’s chili stand in San Antonio’s Plaza de
Armas (Military Plaza) in 1889. Lupe, her best customer, listens to
Jovita tell stories that reveal the roots of San Antonio’s Chili Queens –
women entrepreneurs who fed their community food and stories in
public plazas. Written by Marisela Barrera.

We need your support to help us meet their
challenge. The Richmond’s will match every
dollar donated to the Witte Museum in the
month of June 2014, up to $100,000.
Jack and Laura Richmond
What Will Your Donation Be Used For?
Your donation will help:
• 33,000 school kids become dinosaur detectives, explore the laws of
physics, learn about health and wellness in Super You!, and investigate the
San Antonio River through the Witte’s award-winning education programs;
• 80,000 children and adults experience engaging exhibits with interactive
components during Free Tuesdays;
• Preserve and Display 538 early Texas art paintings in the new B. Naylor
Morton Research and Collections Gallery;
• Bring blockbuster exhibitions to San Antonio, such as: Alien Worlds
and Androids and Grossology: The Impolite Science of the Body;
• Help underwrite the curators and staff who are working to transform
the Witte Museum;
Every Dollar Counts.
• And much, much more!
School children learn about our shared
South Texas heritage at the Witte.
Double the Impact of Your Donation!
We know that there are a lot of competing causes
for your money. The Richmond’s have made it
possible for your gift to the Witte to go farther.
For every dollar you donate, the Richmond’s
will match it 1:1, up to $100,000.
Yes, your gift will be doubled!
Remember, only gifts received by the
Richmond’s during the month of June
will count toward the Challenge Grant.
Thank you for your support.
Together we can accomplish our
mission to set the stage for lifelong
learning in South Texas.
Visitors explore the Witte collection in newly
accessible drawers and visible storage galleries.
What Do I Do?
Please consider making a one-time donation to qualify for the
Richmond Family Foundation’s challenge. You’ll be making a
huge difference to the Witte as we work to instill a love of
lifelong learning in all who visit the museum.
The Richmond’s will only count those gifts received in June,
so please do not send in your donation early. You will receive
a pledge form in the mail at the end of May or you may visit the
Witte Museum website at www.WitteMuseum.org to make your gift.
Please make your check payable to The Witte Museum
and send it to the following address in June:
