Anglo American Oil Company Ltd
Anglo American Oil Company Ltd Celebrating 15 years of trading Product catalogue 2014 Specialist supplier of racing fuels and oils Products for racers from racers W hen we started the company 15 years ago, I could not have imagined where we would be today. Anglo American Oil Company is still a family owned business that represents some of the greatest racing brands in the world. Sunoco, with its established name and history, is the largest manufacturer of race fuels in the world. Driven Racing Oil, which has only been on the market for 10 years, has grown to be the “must have” oil for racing amongst those who understand oils and want to reach the finishing line, all the time, every time. Last year we added Kleers motorsport range to our portfolio, and as with every product that we introduce, we strongly believe that they fit our business objectives, whilst also adding something extra for our customers. When the company was formed I was racing in the Renault Spider Championship and although I never had the opportunity to be a professional racer, I enjoyed it so much so that I decided to make a living out of my passion. I also wanted to give a chance to racers that may not have had enough funds to race on a professional level an opportunity to compete. It took over 10 years before we could action what is now known today as the Sunoco Daytona Challenges. The success of the recent Sunoco Challenges has been proved with two young racers, Bradley Smith and Lewis Plato from Billericay in Essex. Racing for Bradley’s family run Mectech racing team, they did the impossible, with Bradley winning the 2014 Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge and Lewis winning the Sunoco IMSA 200 Challenge, both having raced Radical sports cars to win! We wish them both good luck in Daytona, maybe this will be the year when they both step onto the top of the podium? Brand values Contents Sunoco For decades, Sunoco’s fuels have been associated with racing excellence. Since the mid–60s, when Sunoco and the Roger Penske Racing Team with Mark Donahue forged what would be a long and successful alliance, the company has grown into an industry powerhouse. Today, Sunoco has expanded the reach of its racing fuels line around the world to include all types of professional motor sports and other activities where premium racing fuels make a difference. As the largest manufacturer and refiner of racing fuels in the world, Sunoco has a 40–year track record of winning performances. With an expanded product line, Sunoco offers drivers more choices than ever before. Sunoco blends everyone of its race fuels in–house, then, it analyses and tests each batch under strict laboratory conditions. This ensures that you receive a reliable, high-quality racing gasoline every time. 3 Brand values 4 IMSA explained 5 Autosport & Sunoco Daytona Trip 6Sunoco Daytona 24 Challenge 8 Sunoco 200 Challenge 10 How we deliver fuel 12 Radical 14 BRC 16 Mini Challenge 18 F3 Cup 19 GT Cup 20 Britcar 22 Historic series 24 Speed Euro Series 25 Racing fuels 37 Fuel technical information 40 ISC Racers Tape 41 Driven Oils 75 Kleers motorsport products 82 Brake Fluids 83 Pitstop products 84 Sunoco Oils 86 Tuff Jugs 87 Fuel handling equipment 88 Merchandise 90 European distributors 91 General information BORN FROM JOE GIBBS RACING Driven Racing Oil Born out of the Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR team, Driven Racing Oil has been pioneers of oil technology for over 10 years. Kleers After two years of research and introduction Kleers car care products was launched in 2010. Since then its products have received praise and acclaim on a global scale and consequently more innovative ideas in car care were introduced. 2012 saw the development of the Kleers motorsport range; a series of intelligent products that are aimed at racers and teams that compete in all forms of motorsport – either at a professional or amateur level. 2014 will be a year of celebration for us, with lots of special promotions to celebrate our 15th anniversary. Sunoco_UK Sunoco UK AAOIL 3 IMSA Explained Autosport & Sunoco Daytona Trip IMSA explained Built 1958, 3.56 miles road course, 31 degree banking, total infield area 180 acres With IMSA, the International Motor Sports Association has a long history as the premier sanctioning body for sports car competition in North America and was founded in 1969 by John Bishop with the assistance of NASCAR president Bill France Sr. The first IMSA sanctioned race grew into the series that became known at the IMSA GT series, adding prototype sports cars in the 1980s which proved a huge success through the years. The GRAND-AM Road racing association ran 14 exciting seasons of sports car competition in North America, with a radical step in 2003 where it introduced the Daytona Prototype as its lead class. We also saw the ALMS racing, from 1999, building a loyal group of followers. Whilst both series were successful on their own, it became apparent that they would need to combine in order to grow the sport. In September 2012 the two groups announced they would merge into one organization, to begin in the 2014 season, and that the unified series would be sanctioned by IMSA. It is hoping thisnew exciting chapter will provide an even better experience for sports car enthusiasts. IMSA’s TUDOR United SportsCar Championship opens with a pair of historic events – the Rolex 24 At Daytona and Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring fueled by Fresh from Florida – building on the vision of John Bishop and Bill France Sr. from 45 years ago. Tudor United SportsCar Championship Prototype Class (P) The P class combines GRAND-AM Daytona Prototypes, ALMS P2 and DeltaWing cars. The Prototype class features the fastest and most technologically advanced cars in North America, capable of speeds in excess of 200 mph. Prototype Challenge Class (PC) This is retained from the current ALMS class structure, the PC is a spec class featuring open top race cars and technology such as carbon fiber chassis, carbon brakes and a sequential gearbox. GT Le Mans (GTLM) Consisting of the current ALMS Grand Touring (GT) class, GT Le Mans machines are the most elite and fastest GT cars on the track, but are still based on production models. A true proving ground for leading manufacturers, GTLM cars are capable of speeds in excess of 180 mph. Bradley Smith is the overall season winner who will take part in the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge, provided by Daytona and promoted by Anglo American Oil Company. Last year Ivan Bellarosa was our overall 2012 season winner. Three years ago we introduced the Sunoco GRAND-AM Challenge for the rest of our control fuel championships, with Bradleys team mate, Lewis Plato, winning the seat this year in the 200 mile challenge in a Chevrolet Camaro, so needless to say we are hoping for an exciting weekend! GT Daytona (GTD) Consisting of current GRAND-AM GT, GX and ALMS GTC classes, GT Daytona race cars are the second fastest of the GT classes and are enhanced (but not defined by) technology. Additional IMSA Classes Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge Racing at the same race weekends as the Tudor series and divided into Grand Sport (GS) and Street Tuner (ST) based on engine size and power. What else would you be doing in January? To fight the cold and wet weather of Northern Europe, what could be better than visiting Florida to attend the Rolex 24 At Daytona? It is not only on the most exciting races we have been to, where you can spot some of your favourite stars of the racing world, but it also gives you the chance to see cars finishing within a fraction of second of each other, soaking up thewarm Florida sunshine, recharging your batteries and enjoy the atmosphere of such an historic event, in preparation for the European racing season in April. The Sunoco Challenge For the last 5 years the Sunoco Daytona Challenge has been introducing a winner from our top Sunoco fuelled championships into the highest level of American Sports car racing and awarding them a seat in a Daytona Prototype by giving them the chance of a lifetime to showcase their skills in front of a crowd of over 50,000 people. 4 Anglo American Oil Company Ltd • +44(0)1929 551557 • www.aaoil.co.uk • [email protected] Sunoco_UK Sunoco UK Join us Sports fans can only dream of standing in the huddle at a professional football game or sitting in a Major League Baseball dugout. Bradley, our 5th winner, will take to the wheel of a Daytona Prototype at the 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona in the first ever IMSA race where ALMS and GRAND-AM race on a merged grid. Bradley, from Billericay in Essex, England, first started racing karts at the age of eight where he always had dad Mike as the engineer, the team manager and coach on his side. After Super One they ventured out in Europe for several years to hone Bradley’s technical skills and race craft before returning home to buy a Radical SR3 for the 2012 season. Naturally Bradley was run by the family team, Mectech Motorsport, which resulted in Bradley winning the 2012 Radical Clubman’s Cup before moving up to what has become one of the most fiercely contested one make sports prototype championships in the world - the Radical SR3 Challenge! Bradley squashed the lap record at the first Snetterton race and continued his winning pace throughout the season winning 12 out of 14 races (the two he didn’t win were interrupted by safety cars which hampered his progress through the field after the mandatory pit stops), with numerous fastest laps and pole positions won against some of the fastest pro-drivers today. The Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge has tickled the imagination of nearly 400 racers that have challenged each other over the last 5 years including stars such as Daniel Ricciardo (second in 2010), Jean-Eric Vergne (second in 2011), Felipe Nasr (won in 2011), the late Allan Simonsen and Nick Tandy but also over 6 James Abbott 95.55pts 200 amateur racers from all over Europe. The Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge is provided by Daytona and promoted by Anglo American Oil Company and in 2013 was available for racers in the Radical SR3 Challenge, the Radical European Masters and the MSA British Endurance Championship. The Prize consists of 2 exclusive test days at Daytona, 3 test days at the Roar before the Rolex 24 and of course the big race itself - the mighty 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona. Included in the prize are also all flights, hotel plus a dedicated Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona race suit. Bradley will race a Daytona Prototype for one of the big teams, with the great opportunity to step on to the top of the podium and bring home the much coveted Rolex Daytona watch. The points are then divided by the number of races in the racer’s season to create an average score, then the highest point scorer wins a place in the race. Included in the prize are flights, hotel rooms, race suit and three days of testing at the Roar Before The Rolex 24 and of course the race itself! Racers from the Radical Clubman’s Cup, MINI Challenge JCW Class, F3 Cup, GT Cup, Britcar Production Cup and the Dutch Supercar Challenge fought for the prize drive. In total over 100 racers challenged for the Sunoco 200 Challenge, 8 of which the closest was Chris Smiley in the JCW MINI Challenge who was very close to winning, but as Lewis Plato upped his speed at the same time as Chris suffered some ‘bad luck’ (race incidents etc.), he managed to steal the big prize with just one round to go! The Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge has produced five worthy winners since it was created by Jim France and Anders Hildebrand. The Sunoco 200 Challenge (formerly known as the Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge) is now bringing its third challenger to get the chance of a lifetime to race on the famous Daytona International Speedway’s 31 degree banking. Lewis Plato, team mate to Bradley Smith, in a Mectech run Radical SR3, dominated the Radical Clubman’s Cup (after he learnt how to get off the start line that is) in his first year of racing and will now, as part of his prize, race a flame spitting V8 powered Chevrolet Camaro on the Friday before the Rolex 24 At Daytona which runs alongside all of the razzmatazz of the big race! The Continental series BMW Performance 200 race, as it is called, is divided into two classes, the ST (Street Tuner) and the big GS (Grand Sport) class where Lewis will compete in the Camaro against Aston Martins, Porsches, Mustangs and other sports and muscle cars. The race itself is 200 miles long (hence the name) and many of the racers in the Rolex 24 use the race to get up to speed. The grid holds up to 90 cars, so Lewis will be extremely busy behind the wheel and therefore it will be absolutely key is to keep the car in one piece until the final 30 minutes, where he will then be able to challenge for the win. In 2013 Lawrence Davey was running as high as sixth place, but Anglo American Oil Company Ltd • +44(0)1929 551557 • www.aaoil.co.uk • [email protected] later dropped down to 23rd after a “cuddle” with an Aston Martin put the left rear wheel out of alignment, although finally finished less than 25 seconds from the winner, so this contest is, as you might understand, a very intensive race. The revamped Sunoco 200 Challenge will continue for the 2014 season and again provide an up-and-coming racer the opportunity to race over 4,000 miles away from the comfort of his homeland. Maybe your talent is such so that you will be picked up by a team manager and your dream becomes reality, or it may just be one of the best race weekends ever! This means that all racers must use the nominated fuel for all races. We support these series by being on site across the whole race weekend, including any official test days. Fuel is delivered to each competitor in drums and we collect any empties after the meeting has finished. Spare fuel is always available and unused, sealed drums can be returned. We test fuel samples on site with our own FTIR infrared spectrometer, which produces a very accurate chemical graph of the fuel, which is compared against a reference sample. The advantages to a series of running a control race fuel are: • Our very consistent race fuels help protect engines from detonation worries and reduce component wear • Creates a level playing field for all the competitors 10 • Removes the legal issues that teams or individuals can face when transporting large volumes of fuel • Forecourt petrol stations limit the amount of fuel that they will sell in cans. Although not enforced at all forecourts, this can make the collection of large volumes of fuel not only time consuming but difficult • We work closely with the series organisers to develop a range of joint marketing iniatives Official fuel supplier Some series prefer to leave fuel as a free choice for the competitors, but like the option to have our support at their events, for those racers who like to use a race fuel. Our service operates in exactly the same way as a control fuel arrangement, apart from the fact that no testing is carried out and marketing support is reduced. Anglo American Oil Company Ltd • +44(0)1929 551557 • www.aaoil.co.uk • [email protected] We have been working within the historic market since 2004 offering a leaded fuel service with 100 RON and 105RON fuels available for sale by the litre. We are the official fuel supplier to the Masters Series, HSCC and HRDC, supporting all their UK events and selected European rounds as well. Competitors are free to source their own fuel, but an increasing number choose to use our service. Our fuels remove the need to use other octane or lead replacement additives, which can if over treated, cause misfiring. Mixing the 105RON with pump fuel will also give a very cost effective race fuel, which will offer good levels of protection for a comparatively low compression race engine. The recent trend within the rally community has been to move to controlled refuelling using mobile refueling equipment operated by a professional team, within a dedicated area. This has been driven by a number of factors, not least the desire by event organisers to limit the damaging effect on the local environment in terms of possible fuel spills and empty cans being left behind. We have been servicing the British Rally Championship since 2008 providing a range of fuels by the litre. FTIR sample test results Super Unleaded Batch No. 531 Sunoco RMR Batch No. 526 Pallet service For a limited number of series, we arrange to have all fuel orders delivered to the race event by pallet service, for the series themselves to take delivery and distribute amongst the racers. Works well for low volume events and removes the need for teams to transport their own fuel. Home delivery Our biggest group of customers are those that order fuel by phone, email, internet or fax to our office. We are happy to send a single 25 litre drum or orders making up several pallets, using our hazardous transport partner, Clarke Transport, who operate a 3 day or next day service for any orders processed before midday. The Anglo American Oil Company is the official race fuel partner of Radical Sportscars for its European and UK domestic race championships. The Radical Masters Euroseries, SR3 Challenge, Clubman’s Cup and SR1 Cup have gone from strength-to-strength in 2013 with packed grids and thrilling racing, both feats set to continue in 2014. RADICAL MASTERS EUROSERIES Radical’s premier pan-European endurance race series has visited the Continent’s fastest and most challenging Grand Prix circuits in 2013 with a calendar that kicked off early in March at Portimao. The everpopular Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps and Circuit de Catalunya featured alongside Paul Ricard and Monza making a welcome return. The Masters Euroseries features two classes for the SR8 RX and SR3 RS respectively; in the former Masters Class, Brazilian former single-seater ace Victor Correa had to wait until the very last round to seal his title and wash pushed hard throughout the season by 2012 champion Konstantin Calko. After the final round the pair were split by just four points with the Marks Electrical Racing duo of Tony Wells/James Littlejohn third in class. Radical UK Works Team driver James Abbott sealed the Supersports Class and overall championship honours in his SR3 RS with incredible consistency and pace throughout the season. Nine class wins, five pole positions and five fastest laps ensured he was never headed, although last year’s UK Cup champion Colin Noble and Czech racers Bronislav Formanek/Josef Zaruba weren’t far behind. In 2014 the Radical Masters Euroseries will once again enjoy an unbeatable calendar of world-class race circuits running alongside the well-promoted GT Sport package, and will continue to offer the same exciting 50-minute endurance race format for one or two drivers per car. RADICAL SR1 CUP RADICAL SR3 CHALLENGE Radical’s UK domestic endurance championship enjoyed a revised format and a new name in 2013, changing from the Radical UK Cup to the Radical SR3 Challenge. Britain’s fastest single-make formula has welcomed some extremely experienced sportscar, BTCC and single-seater stars to the Radical family, alongside gentleman drivers of all levels of experience to create a fascinating and close-fought title battle. Young Billericay racer Bradley Smith has undoubtedly been the class of the 2013 field with 12 outright wins seeing him wrap up the title in the penultimate round. Not only does Smith win an SR8 RX drive in the Radical Masters Euroseries as his prize but also the Sunoco Rolex 24 at Daytona Challenge which will see him drive a Daytona Prototype in January 2014. He wasn’t the only race winner in 2013 though. At Oulton Park Andy Cummings and ex-British GT champ Bradley Ellis notched up 12 a victory whilst at Snetterton Peter Belshaw and Phil Keen took a win for Marks Electrical. Throughout the season the racing has been fast and furious. Expect more of the same in 2014 as the same great SR3 Challenge format continues to grow and mature. RADICAL CLUBMAN’S CUP The evergreen Radical Clubman’s Cup has enjoyed grids of over 30 cars throughout 2013 ensuring close racing and a tight championship battle between the Supersport and Prosport classes. Despite missing the opening round at Snetterton eventual champion Jesper Westerholm was straight on the pace at Brands Hatch to battle with Supersports class victor Lewis Plato throughout the season, trading places at every race. At the season’s end Westerholm had taken the Clubman’s Cup by Anglo American Oil Company Ltd • +44(0)1929 551557 • www.aaoil.co.uk • [email protected] just five points from Plato to secure a drive in the SR3 Challenge. Plato has the Sunoco-supported GRAND-AM 200 Challenge prize to look forward to in January, thanks to his consistently high class results through the season. There’ll be even more thrills and spills in 2014 with the addition of the SR1 Cup class for drivers progressing from Radical’s entrylevel championship but still enjoying the same great 20-minute sprint format races...roll on the first round. Sunoco_UK Sunoco UK The Radical SR1 Cup has been THE great success story of UK motorsport in 2013. To launch a new ‘championship-in-a-box’ concept for novice racers to gain all the experience, confidence and racecraft they need to compete successfully, and witness 24 eager racers enter Paddock Hill Bend at Brands Hatch for the first time has been a fantastic achievement. The SR1 Cup package includes a brand-new Le Mans-inspired SR1 Cup racecar, intensive dedicated trackday tuition, a free race suit and race entry fees to eight races at Brands, Oulton Park, Cadwell Park and Snetterton. It’s a concept that’s been welcomed and acclaimed by industry professionals and looks set to enjoy even bigger grids in 2014. Colin Noble Jnr, son of Masters Euroseries runner-up Noble Snr scooped the inaugural title after a season-long battle with fellow youngster Dan Vaughan. The pair spent much of the season nose-totail but in the end Noble was able to edge Vaughan with Rob Almond third-in-championship. The SR1 Cup also offers the Fangio Trophy, contested by drivers over 40 years of age; in this Caterham Academy convert Brian Caudwell took the honours ahead of James Guess and Matt Brookes. In a short space of time the SR1 Cup has made a big impression. Such has been the success in just one season, already the SR1 Cup is being considered for other markets around the world. We can’t wait to see what 2014 will produce. www.radicalsportscars.com AAOIL 13 British Rally Championship British Rally Championship MSA British Rally Champio nship MSA British Rally Championship Sunoco CF is the control fuel for the MSA British Rally Championship (BRC) and is a high quality unleaded, fast burning fuel. To minimise environmental impact on public areas such as woodland the BRC introduced centralised refuelling to give a safe, single refuelling facility at all of its events. Using a control fuel supplied from managed refuelling rigs negated the need for the carriage of fuel to and from events by individual teams meaning a safer and cleaner public environment. 2014 Overview The 2014 MSA British Rally Championship (BRC) comprises seven classic rallies, a mix of four gravel and three asphalt events, each offering a different length, terrain and character. New for 2014, the epic Rally Isle of Man will provide two point scoring opportunities creating eight rounds in total with competitors counting their best six scores. With four rounds on each surface, separate asphalt and gravel championships will exist for all competitors including BRC Challenge Trophy runners. Already proving to be a development arena for real talent, the main BRC will continue to be the pinnacle of the sport in the UK 14 and in recognition of this, the cars will run at the front of the rallies in a modern group and ahead of the historic cars. It will again feature just two wheel drive cars in five new categories. The outright rally wins and eventual British Rally Champion driver and co-driver are expected to come from BRC1 which is based on FIA R3 regulations. BRC2 will be for FIA R2 category cars and the technical regulations will provide for a one-off development of vehicles via the Championship Passport scheme. BRC3 will comprise the MSA British Junior Rally Championship where for the first time, competitors will be allowed to build their own non homologated cars based on slightly modified R1 standard showroom regulations. The MSA British Manufacturer Teams Rally Championship will be award to teams fielding two cars in BRC1, 2 or 3. Integral to the 2014 Championship will be the new BRC Challenge Trophy (formerly the BRC Challenge) which will be inter-seeded with the main BRC group, providing all of benefits of participating in the British Rally Championship, but on a smaller budget. The Challenge Trophy runners will complete a shortened version of the overall route and are not allowed to do reconnaissance on gravel. For newcomers, it provides a starting point, experience and insight of each event, recce on asphalt rounds, plus reward Anglo American Oil Company Ltd • +44(0)1929 551557 • www.aaoil.co.uk • [email protected] and recognition with its own dedicated finish ceremonies. The BRC Challenge Trophy classes, BRC4 & BRC5 will be open to non homologated vehicles and provide the BRC Stars of the Future (for under 21 year olds) a first rung on the ladder to BRC stardom. The BRC Challenge Trophy is a new addition in the form of an amalgamated BRC Challenge. The Challenge Trophy provides new category BRC4 and BRC5 crews with a chance to compete in the BRC with non homologated vehicles, without the additional cost burden of higher entry fees, longer events, having to do the reconnaissance on gravel rallies. Competition for U21 junior drivers will be focused on the BRC Stars of the Future for drivers who were born on or after 1st January 1993, driving BRC5 designated cars only. BRC5 will provide low cost entry and structured progression into the main BRC. New for 2014, separate BRC Gravel and Asphalt Championship titles for all competitors whether doing the main event, of the shorter Challenge trophy section. Points will be drawn up from the classified results at the point in the rally where both elements split. Four rounds on each surface will create a separate championship table with the best three scores counting towards the final total. www.rallybrc.co.uk Sunoco_UK Sunoco UK 2014 MSA British Rally Championship Calendar* 5/6 April 3/4 May 30/31 May 27/28 June 15/16 August 11-13 September 17/18 October Rally North Wales Pirelli Rally Jim Clark Rally Scottish Rally Ulster Rally Rally Isle of Man Rallye Sunseeker *correct at time of print AAOIL 15 Mini challenge MINI CHALLENGE Mini Challenge The MINI Challenge is THE Championship for the new MINI in the UK since 2002 and has always enjoyed great grids, colourful cars and close racing. The championship is the perfect place for drivers to hone their skills in superb machinery, most importantly, on a budget. The championship caters for F3 chassis from 1980 up to 2007 across three different classes: The Masters 96 Class, for cars built before 1997, the Trophy 01 Class for cars between 1997 and 2001 and the Cup 07 of cars from 2001 to 2007. It was Alex Craven of Lanan Racing who won a richly-deserved championship title in 2013, overhauling early championship leader and GP3 racer Alice Powell, racing with the highly-experienced Mark Bailey Racing squad. The title race went down to the wire, but Craven outscored BRDC Rising Star Powell at the final round of the season at Snetterton to join Chris Dittmann on the honours list of champions. For the second year in a row the championship went down to a three-way shoot-out with Tristan Cliffe the third protagonist, the man who claimed the most wins all year but still only finished third. Henry Chart would have made it a four-way battle but for bad luck, though the double race-winner shone in the final race of the season. Louis Hamilton-Smith did everything but win in 2013, claiming 10 podiums from the 12 races he entered. That competitiveness, coupled with a calendar packed with some of the UK’s best circuits, has made F3 Cup an attractive place for drivers of very different experience levels to race at a fraction of the cost of British F3. www.f3cup.co.uk GT CUP F3 Cup photos by Jonathan Hatfield 2013 was a superb year for the GT Cup culminating in a thrilling final round with Jeff Wyatt clinching the Championship from season long front runner Alex Martin by only one point. The average grid size for the seven weekend calendar was over twenty six cars with drivers competing in cars form thirteen marques. The GT Cup encourages engineering and so had the honour of being the series chosen for the racing debut of the new SIN R1 racing car – a World first. 2014 is shaping up to be an even better year for the championship. With an exciting calendar that will visit three Grand Prix circuits and includes supporting the prestigious Blancpain GT series at Brands Hatch on what promises to be a GT extravaganza. Motors TV will also broadcast the June Silverstone meeting live as cars and drivers compete around the international circuit using the F1 ‘Wing’ pit buildings as their base for the meeting. The format remains ideal for solo drivers but also accommodates two driver team entries and professional driver / coaches. Each two day meeting will have one 45 minute race with a compulsory pit stop on the Saturday, and two twenty five minute sprint races on the Sunday. The Saturday will also include a thirty five minute free practice session, and a 20 minute qualifying session. The one day rounds will have 30 minute qualifying session and two twenty five minute sprint races. In 2014 competitors will be free to supply their own fuel, or source it from Anglo American. As the official fuel supplier, we support the series by being on site across the whole race weekend delivering fuel to competitors and collecting any empties after the meeting has finished. Britcar Endurance Championship The Britcar Endurance Championship caters for out and out GT cars from Le Mans levels of performance such as Porsche 911 RSR’s and Ferrari GT2’s, Le Mans style prototypes in LMPX and GT4 cars such as Aston Martin GT4 and Ginetta G50s. Race weekends are a mix of two 90 minute races and a longer race at Spa Francorchamps. All races include the excitement of an endurance race featuring pit stops with driver changes, refuelling and tyre changes. The championship is usually the headline event at race meetings and has support from the Britcar family of races. The endurance Championship continues the Britcar ethos of offering great track time at each race weekend. The 2013 championship was action packed throughout with the title of ‘2013 MSA British Endurance Champions’ going to the Team Parker Porsche 911 of Ian Loggie and Chris Jones. Britcar Endurance Sports and Touring Car Championship The companion championship to the Britcar Endurance Championship is the Britcar Endurance Sports and Touring Car Championship. It caters for less tuned and more road based cars and is a mixture of production saloons, endurance specials and older GT4 cars. All of the races last 90 minutes except for the 4 hour race at the famous Spa Francorchamps Grand Prix Circuit and feature a mandatory pit stop. In 2013 Ian Lawson, Anthony Wilds and Mike Wilds piloted their ING Sport 320i to championship glory. For 2014 there are plans for two new series aimed at smaller 20 engined more cost effective machinery, named the Britcar Trophy Series and the Britcar Duro Series. These series are intended to widen the appeal of the Britcar format. Britcar 24 Hours It is hoped that the drama and excitement of the Britcar 24hrs will return in 2014 after a one year break This is a must do event for many racers. With few UK circuits holding licences for 24 racing, the approval process is both a complex and time consuming issue and at the time of writing the local authorities are still to make a final decision. The 24 hours is a non championship event where both the Britcar Endurance Championship and the Britcar Endurance Sports and Touring Car Championship combine along with extra entries from other UK Championships as well as a great contingent of overseas endurance teams joining in on the action at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit. There’s action all the way proving that history never stops being made. www.themastersseries.com MASTERS, HSCC, GROUP C, CSCC & HRDC HRDC HSCC The Historic Racing Drivers Club’s (HRDC) outlook is to bring back and uphold the spirit of the type of ‘Club Racing’ that was prevalent in the 1950s and ‘60s. This ethos of ‘Old School’ values has captured the attention of many historic racers who feel that the historic racing arena is in danger of becoming too overtly commercial, with less and less focus on the people who work-on and race-in their treasured cars in favour of harvesting the perceived wealth of those individuals. Thus the HRDC provides a more stripped-down approach to racing, with a greater emphasis on camaraderie and community spirit, which evoke an altogether more harmonious atmosphere in the HRDC race paddocks throughout each racing season. That’s not to say that the level of racing is any less exciting in HRDC races – from the cheeky manoeuvres Austin A35s and A40s to the bellowing power slides of the Jaguar Mk.1 and Mk.7s, the competitive spirit of HRDC racers is undiminished! The 2014 season will see both HRDC Series (HRDC ‘Touring Greats’ for pre-’60 historic Touring Cars’ and HRDC ‘Allstars’ for pre-’66 historic Sports, Touring and GT cars) contest six race dates at six premier U.K racing venues. Full information on how to get involved can be obtained by gong onto the HRDC website: The Historic Sports Car Club is Britain’s premier historic motor racing club. It was formed in 1966 to encourage the preservation and continued racing use of the classic sports and sports racing cars of the 1940’s and 1950’s many of which, technically outdated, were then being neglected and even forgotten. The club runs an average of 12 race meetings a year including the Cadwell Park Wolds Trophy, Brands Hatch Superprix, The Oulton Park Gold Cup, The Donington Historic Festival and both the Silverstone Classic and the Silverstone International. For 2013 the club added a new event the Thruxton Easter Revival which is to be repeated in 2014. It also adminsters a total of 13 Race Championships and series. In 2011 the HSCC was awarded Club of the year at the International Historic Motoring Awards, to compliment their previous two awards of “Historic Competition Club of the Year.” In 2013 the HSCC launched a new series of races for the Super Touring Cars, of the 1990’s. The SPEED enduro events will include 60 and 90 minute races and potentially a two hour race on the wonderful Brands Hatch GP long circuit in September. The programme as envisaged as we go to press includes events also at the Nurburgring, Spa, Zolder and Paul Ricard in the South of France. SPEED cars will continue to reflect the full FIA CN regulations running with the 2litre Honda engines that have proved the cornerstone of reliability and performance. Sunoco racing fuel will be the number 1 choice for the competitors as in past seasons and already new cars are being prepared for the events. The successful Wolf chassis will again be plentiful but more competition is expected from the UK in the shape of the Gibson and Tiga cars. The Gibson ran successfully late in 2013 and for the new season a new Tiga model will be unveiled. Taatus, Ligier and Norma will continue 24 to provide strong competition in this closely matched formula that provides a first class training ground for young drivers with endurance racing ambitions and gentlemen drivers wanting quality racing at sensible prices. “Integrating our entries with the popular Dutch Superlight categories reduces costs for our SPEED entrants whilst still giving the international experience to the drivers and teams. Having a larger number of cars on the grid makes it a more enjoyable race meeting and fun is what it is all about,” said Speed co-ordinator Stuart McCrudden. The SPEED category within the Superlights events will have unique points awarded that will count towards the end-of-season awards with regular position bulletins posted on the SPEED website. In this way recognition of outstanding results will continue to be rewarded. 2014 will be another competitive season for the CN racers. Any fuel, including race fuel, will deteriorate, when exposed to the atmosphere. Prolonged exposure, will allow the light–end properties to escape, and as a consequence, the performance of the fuel will drop. This means that when using your drums of fuel at a circuit, they must be resealed after you have removed the quantity of fuel you need. You should not leave any kind of transfer pump standing in the drum as typically they don’t maintain an air tight seal in the drum opening. One other issue to mindful of is the increasing use of ethanol in unleaded fuels of any type. Ethanol attracts moisture and is aggressive to rubber. This means it is important to keep drums closed on damp or wet days, and if our English summer is actually sunny, fuel should not be kept in clear containers. Once a drum has been opened, the fuel will keep, but there are a few provisos. As mentioned above, the container must be kept sealed and it is best to use the containers we supply the fuel in. Our standard Tri Sure bungs have a rubber seal and can be screwed down tightly to make an air and moisture tight seal. All our fuel drums have an internal coating applied, which prevents any corrosion forming, keeping the fuel clean. The drum itself needs to be stored at a stable temperature. The key thing is not to expose the drum to extremes of temperature variation, i.e. leaving it outside in direct sunlight in summer or snow and ice in the winter. If these simple rules are followed, then the fuel, in a part drum, will easily last for months or even years (depending on type of fuel inside – call for technical advice). Transportation by sea The International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code requires that fuels classified under UN 1203, MOTOR SPIRIT or GASOLINE or PETROL must be declared when being carried by sea. Unless declared, it is prohibited to carry any additional fuel, other than that which is in the fuel tank(s) of the car(s) on any ferry crossing. If undeclared fuel containers are discovered by the Ferry Company or an inspection body the ferry operator will not allow the carrier to travel unless, the fuel is disposed of outside the port area before boarding the ferry. If undeclared fuel is found, the time taken to deal with the incident could mean that the ferry crossing may be missed. The declaration of the petrol must be made on a Dangerous Goods Shipping Note. The declaration must be as follows: UN1203 MOTOR SPIRIT,3,11(D/E) for less than 10% ethanol content. It is important that the person loading the vehicle signs Container/Vehicle Packing Certificate. Transportation in the UK. Transporting petrol, be it race fuel or regular pump fuel, is regulated by ADR, which is an international standard covering the transportation of hazardous materials. In the UK this is enforced by various bodies, such as the Police, Ministry of Transport and VOSA. These regulations limit the amount of fuel that can be transported, unless the driver holds an additional ADR licence and the vehicle has the specified safety equipment aboard. If stopped carrying more than the quantities shown below, then as the very least you will be prevented from completing your journey, until a suitably qualified driver and vehicle is found. A private individual is allowed to carry a maximum of 240 litres in containers no larger than 60 litres. A business, is allowed carry up to 333 litres, in either 25, 50 or 200lt drums provided: • The vehicle has 1 x 2kg dry powder for the cab • The driver has had some low level training (Awareness training) • The cans must not be opened in transit • No portable lighting equipment to carried unless it conforms to ATEX. • No Smoking on or around, the vehicle during operations, this means loading, unloading and transit • The drums need to be secure whilst in transit • Need to carry INSTRUCTIONS IN WRITING (The Instructions in Writing can be downloaded from the internet) Any business regularly transporting fuel with any doubts about what they are doing should make contact with a local dangerous goods safety adviser. Once you exceed these limits you will be subject to full ADR 2013. Sunoco_UK Sunoco UK Sunoco Race fuel distillation tower, Marcus Hook PA AAOIL 37 Fuel Metering Specific gravity Specific gravity Definition: specific gravity (noun) – the ratio of the density of any substance to the density of some other substance taken as standard, water being the standard for liquids and solids, and hydrogen or air being the standard for gases For fuels, specific gravity can be determined by dividing the density of the fuel (in units of pounds per gallon) by the density of water (8.325 pounds per gallon). Let’s look at one example. Sunoco Supreme weighs 5.95 pounds per gallon. Applying some maths: 5.95 / 8.325 = 0.715. So Supreme has a specific gravity of 0.715. If fuel A has a lower specific gravity than fuel B, fuel A is said to be “lighter” than fuel B. Literally, a gallon of fuel A weighs less than a gallon of fuel B. Sunoco GT Plus has a specific gravity of 0.762, so it is said to be “heavier” than Supreme. Why does this matter? Well there are two reasons. First, specific gravity has an impact on fuel metering, especially for carburetted engines. A heavier fuel is of course denser, so the float in a carb’s float bowl will sit higher than if a lighter fuel was used. If the float sits higher, the fuel level will be lower. Fuel level affects fuel metering in a number of ways, so if you’re switching fuels, pay attention to the fuel level in the bowls. For most race fuels, specific gravity is also an indication of the composition. Note that the words “most” and “indication” were used – there are exceptions. However, for most race fuels, a lower specific gravity suggests a faster–burning fuel, while a higher specific gravity suggests a fuel is slower–burning. This is because most light hydrocarbons used to make a race fuel are faster burning than most heavier hydrocarbons. This matters because 38 faster–burning fuels usually require less spark advance than slower– burning fuels. So in addition to paying attention to fuel metering changes when switching race fuels, you need to pay attention to ignition timing as well. We’re not talking huge changes here, but these changes are important to the proper tuning and consistent performance of your race engine. One final thought – there are implications for pump gas as well. The specific gravity of pump gas will typically range from about 0.720 to 0.770. As you can now guess, this wide range is a reflection of the wide ranging composition. Pump gas composition varies by octane, by region, and by season. For these reasons, a race engine that can run on pump gas must be tuned conservatively just to prevent engine failure. You can imagine the consequences of an engine that is tuned to the ragged edge on one batch of pump gas, then another batch is used in a race and the motor runs lean and timing is over–advanced. Not good. One of the most important attributes of a race fuel is its consistency. Even if you don’t need all the engine protection offered by a high octane race fuel, you may need its consistency. Specific gravity is one of the many parameters we monitor to ensure quality and consistency in all our fuels, batch after batch. Article supplied by Sunoco Race Gas, USA Anglo American Oil Company Ltd • +44(0)1929 551557 • www.aaoil.co.uk • [email protected] Fuel Metering Can I mix fuels? Yes, you can mix any of our race fuels. But remember – if your engine needs an unleaded fuel, you don’t want to mix leaded with unleaded. Doing so would make a leaded fuel which could still damage oxygen sensors and catalytic converters. What is the octane when I mix them? First you need to calculate the percentage of each fuel that will be in the final mixture. Then, use this equation to find your octane: ( [ % Fuel A ] x [ Octane of Fuel A ] ) + ( [ % Fuel B ] x [ Octane of Fuel B ] ) = Octane of Mixture Here’s an example. Let’s say you mix 3 gallons of 115 with 2 gallons Sunoco_UK Sunoco UK of 95 and you want to know the octane of the resulting 5 gallon mixture. The percentage of 115 in the mix is 3/5 = 0.60 (60%). The percentage of the 95 octane fuel in the mix is 2/5 = 0.40 ( 40%). Plugging the information into the equation: (0.60 x 115) + (0.40 x 95) = 69 + 38 = 107 So the octane of the resulting mixture is 107. You can also determine the oxygen content of the mixture the same way – just use the oxygen content information from each fuel in place of the octane numbers. See, that wasn’t so bad, was it? After all, it’s just maths. And if you have any other questions about race fuels, don’t hesitate to contact us! The PROblem: Ethanol Corrosion In Carbureted Engines The growing use of Ethanol in modern pump fuel significantly increases the risk of carburetor and fuel system corrosion. Ethanol is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture, which causes corrosion in the fuel system and inside the engine. High levels of Ethanol dilution in the motor oil can lead to increased moisture in the crankcase, thereby causing rust and other corrosion problems. Plus, Ethanol by itself is corrosive to components made of Aluminum and Zinc, like carburetors. Both of these problems are compounded by long periods of storage between uses. Before you put your carbureted engine in storage for the winter off-season, it’s crucial to make sure it has the correct protection so that it will be in proper running condition when it’s time to take it back out the next year. Designed for all carbureted engines, Driven Carb Defender will save you the hassle of costly post storage repairs resulting from corrosion that happens at an accelerated pace over the winter due to temperature swings. Because it is specifically formulated to protect against Ethanol corrosion and induction deposits, Driven Carb Defender and its special corrosion inhibitors work to counteract the damaging moisture buildup resulting from the hygroscopic characteristics of Ethanol-blended fuel. Over the winter months, the Ethanol in your fuel tank absorbs moisture, which if left unprotected will lead to rust, corrosion and other costly problems. In addition, this additive stabilizes the fuel as well as cleans existing deposits in the combustion chamber. With Driven Carb Defender, you can rest assured that once it’s spring and you’re ready to bring your ride back out, its performance will remain the same. Let’s face it, all oils lubricate. The question is for how long and under what conditions? Stock motor oils work for stock engines. But when you install a higher lift cam and stronger valve springs, you need a better oil. High performance engines see more RPM, higher loads and increased temperatures compared to stock engines, so a high performance engine requires higher levels of Zinc, Phosphorus, Sulfur and other additives to prevent premature part failure. This is especially true in flat tappet engines. Simply put, the oil used in an engine needs to be formulated for that specific type of engine. Driven Racing Oil provides serious oils for serious engines. all zinC is nOT The same Many oils now claim to be “High Zinc,” but the real question is not about how much Zinc is in your oil. The better question is, “What type of Zinc is in your oil?” In 2011 the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the International Lubricants and Standardization Committee (ILSAC) both adopted new motor oil standards that called for a new type of Zinc additive in motor oils that carry the API SN and ILSAC GF-5 certification. This is on top of the reduction of Zinc anti-wear additives in API and ILSAC licensed motor oils since 2005. To understand this whole situation better, let’s take a quick look at what Zinc actually is, how it works and why it has been reduced and changed. zinC 101 The oil additive Zinc Dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) works because it is a polar molecule, so it is attracted to metal surfaces. ZDDP reacts under heat and load to create a sacrificial film that allows ZDDP to protect flat tappet camshafts and other highly loaded engine parts. The Society of Automotive Engineers’ Automotive Lubricants Reference Book states, “ZDDP is the predominant anti-wear additive used in crankcase oils, although it is a class of additive rather than one particular chemical.” Some Zinc additives have slower “burn” rates that require more heat and more load to activate than other Zinc additives. As a result, not all “high Zinc” oils have the same activation rate. High speed valve trains require a “fast burn” ZDDP that activates quickly. However, these “fast burn” ZDDP additives tend to reduce catalytic converter performance. As a result, motor oils have changed from traditional ZDDP additives in the range of 1,000 to 1,200 ppm back in the 1990s down to a minimum of 600 ppm and a maximum of 800 ppm of “Phosphorus Retention” ZDDP today (for API SN and ILSAC GF-5 motor oils). This is a direct result of EPA requirements to reduce vehicle emissions. While this has been beneficial for reducing emissions in modern engines, it has been very detrimental to classic and high performance engines. Since the reduction of ZDDP in motor oils, every camshaft manufacturer has seen flat tappet and high performance valve train failures skyrocket as a direct consequence. The CRiTiCal balanCe OF deTeRgenTs TO zinC Detergents and dispersants in the oil complicate the situation. Detergent and dispersant additives compete against Zinc in the engine because they are polar molecules as well. Detergents and dispersants clean the engine, but they don’t distinguish between sludge, varnish and Zinc – they clean all three away. Modern API certified oils contain high levels of detergents and dispersants. The old school theory on engine break-in was to run non-detergent oils, and this allowed for greater activation of the Zinc additive in the oil. Driven BR Break-In Oils utilize the correct balance of high levels of Zinc anti-wear additives and low levels of detergents, so you don’t need to buy expensive additives to try to correct a low Zinc (ZDDP) content oil. Visit www.drivenracingoil.com for even more information on the latest developments in oil technology. 46 It begins with the Driven Engine Assembly Grease that places tenacious extreme pressure, anti-wear additives on the critical wear surfaces of your engine. Next, Driven BR Break-In Oil feeds your engine the “fast burn” Zinc it craves during initial break-in. Driven uses a proprietary combination of “fast burn” ZDDP anti-wear and extreme pressure additives to provide proven protection for flat tappet and aggressive roller cam valve trains. The unique formula of BR Break-In Oil also utilizes low levels of detergent and dispersant additives in order to quickly establish the critical anti-wear film throughout your engine. Building this foundational anti-wear film in your engine lowers the wear that occurs during break-in, which extends the life of your engine. Once the anti-wear film has been established and the break-in process completed, the XP series of racing oils adds proven friction modifiers to lower engine temperatures and increase horsepower. The HR series of oils for classic cars and hot rods provides extra storage protection additives as well as flat tappet cam protection. Driven also provides a complete line of synthetic high performance street oils designed to protect turbochargers and modern engines with variable valve timing technology. Oil does more than just reduce friction and wear − it provides vital cooling in an engine. Cool, well lubricated parts last longer, so spraying oil on valve springs, camshafts and pistons will keep them running stronger for longer. Synthetic oils have a greater specific heat capacity than conventional oils, which means synthetics can absorb more heat from the part. This enables synthetic oils to cool better than conventional oils. 0.55 Also, the high temperatures on the valve springs, camshafts and pistons cause conventional oils to break down much faster than synthetic oil. Conventional oils begin to break down at 240° F, but synthetic oils can handle up to 320° F before they begin to break down. The improved thermal stability of synthetic oil provides increased oil longevity, and the greater heat capacity of synthetic oil provides better cooling for extended part life. 0.45 CaL / Gram Synthetic oils have a greater specific heat capacity – enabling them to cool better. The index is based on Pennsylvania Crude, which is the highest quality conventional crude oil. PA Crude has a viscosity index of 100. The preferred synthetic base oil until now has been PAO, which is quite a bit better than any conventional oil as it features an index number of 140. mPAO has a viscosity index of 200 – solid evidence of its enhanced lubrication properties! 100 0.004 DOuBle THe ViscOsiTy inDex Of cOnVenTiOnal Base Oils mPAo Following this program greatly reduces the contaminants in the oil system, and that reduces engine wear. By extending the drain interval of the oil, this method reduces oil purchases, and that saves money. If you don’t believe us, see the cost analysis below. 0.40 Mineral Oil 75 A typical Methanol fueled engine can run five nights of racing before needing a complete oil change – just by changing the filter and adding oil each night. As long as the oil still looks fresh and does not smell like fuel, you can just change the filter, add oil and keep racing. Once the oil turns dark and begins to smell like fuel, go ahead and drain the oil and install fresh oil and a new filter. PAO Synthetic PAo 48 While synthetic oil costs more per quart, it can actually save you money on total oil purchases. It is more durable and lasts longer than conventional oil, so you don’t have to change it as often. The most cost effective approach is to use synthetic oil and frequently change the oil filter. However, over 50% of machine failures are related to contamination so keeping your oil system clean is also important. Changing the used filter removes contaminants from the oil system, and topping off the oil when you install the new filter adds clean oil to the system. Following this maintenance program reduces engine wear and oil purchases, as well as extends oil life. 0.50 Conventional PA Crude Get More From Your Oil Using the correct viscosity synthetic oil provides extra “insurance” against heat related engine wear and damage. To choose the correct viscosity for your race application, see the chart on page 28 of this catalog. Specific Heat Oil is the lifeblood of any engine. When it comes to highly complex performance engines, it’s critical to choose the oil that meets your engine’s specific needs. While it is often difficult to separate “fact from fiction” regarding engine oils, rest assured that lubricant technology is constantly evolving at the highest levels of motorsports, and Driven Racing Oil is a major player in those developments. One such breakthrough that Driven has recently incorporated into all its synthetic options is mPAO − a next generation synthetic base lubricant. While you may never have heard this name before, what this stuff does is impressive. By using an mPAO base for creating its performance lubricants, Driven is able to create a lightweight motor oil that retains a high HTHS (High Temperature High Shear) viscosity to give you the best lubricant possible − an oil that’s less sensitive to heat, doesn’t break down under extreme friction and increases power output. 49 engine bReak-in & assemblY engine bReak-in & assemblY engine assemblY gRease Recommended by leading camshaft manufacturers, this unique extreme pressure lube dissolves completely in oil without clogging oil passageways or plugging oil filters. Using too high of a viscosity oil can result in excessive oil temperature and increased drag. Using too low of a viscosity oil can lead to excessive metal to metal contact of moving parts. Using the correct viscosity oil reduces friction and wear. Since all oils get thinner as they get hotter (and get thicker as they get colder), the charts below show the viscosity change from 100˚ F to 300˚ F. You can use these charts to select the best viscosity for the operating temperature of your application (not too thick nor too thin). 40 years ago, you had winter grades for cold weather and summer grades for hot weather. A typical winter grade was 10W. A typical summer grade was 30. We often refer to these oils as straight grade oils. A 10W flows well in cold weather, so it protects the engine at start up in cold weather. That is why it has the “W” after the 10. “W” stands for winter, but a 10W is too thin for use in the heat of the summer. So, you would change to a 30 summer grade oil that was thick enough to protect in the heat. That is why multi-grade oils were invented. A 10W-30 has both the winter cold start up flow properties of a 10W and the summer high temperature thickness of a 30 grade. A multi-grade oil allows the oil to stay as close to the optimum viscosity over a range of temperatures − not too thick when it is cold and not too thin when it is hot. As you can see, the operating temperature of the oil plays a major role in the selection of the proper viscosity oil. For example, look at an NHRA Pro Stock engine, a NASCAR Sprint Cup engine and a World of Outlaws 410 Sprint engine. Each engine has a very different operating oil temperature – 100°F, 220°F and 300°F, respectively. As a result, all three engines run very different viscosity oils − SAE 0W-5, SAE 5W-20 and SAE 15W-50. The lower the oil temperature is, the lower the SAE you can run, and vice versa. It is important to keep clearances in mind. Looser clearances in the engine and oil pump require higher viscosity oil to maintain oil pressure. Tighter clearances need lower viscosity oil, which provides better cooling and improved horsepower. For more detailed explanations of how oil temperature and bearing clearances affect oil selection, please visit www.drivenracingoil.com Driven Racing Oils are application engineered to allow the use of lower viscosity oils without compromising wear. How about an intake valve dirtier than an exhaust valve? Ever wondered why that is? The one word answer is “volatility.” This refers to how much vapor a motor oil releases when it gets hot. Just as how water vapors rise off a pot of water before it begins to boil, the same thing happens to motor oil inside your engine. As oil splashes onto the pistons and valve springs to keep them cool, the high temperature causes some of the oil to evaporate. Modern engines have a positive crankcase ventilation valve that vents these oil vapors into the intake manifold. The oil vapors condense in the cool air/fuel mixture, which leaves the oily deposits in the intake manifold and on the intake valve. So what can you do? Using a lower volatility motor oil is the first line of defense. Fewer oil vapors mean not as many make it into the PCV system in the first place. More oil is then kept in the crankcase where it belongs. The next thing you can do is install an aftermarket PCV line oil catch can. These two steps will reduce the amount of oil getting into the intake tract. Obviously a cleaner intake valve will flow more air for better power and fuel economy. These steps also reduce oil consumption, which helps to protect O2 sensors and catalytic converters from damage due to excessive oil consumption. Specialty oils like Driven LS30, FR20 and FR50 feature a high-quality base oil, reduce oil consumption AND contain more ZDDP for better engine protection. The O2 sensors and catalytic converters don’t know how much ZDDP is in the motor oil so it stays where it should – in the crankcase lubricating your engine. LS30 can contain 50% more ZDDP since the volatility is 67% less than standard base oils. The higher quality base oil delivers better all around protection and performance. engine assemblY TiPs A human hair is about 80 microns wide, and the smallest particle size you can see with a naked eye is about 40 microns. Can something so small you can’t even see it really cause problems? The answer is yes. Clearance size particles do the most damage. They are small enough to get into the space between the bearing and the journal or the lifter and lifter bore, but they are too big to flow straight through without touching anything. Particles that are smaller than the clearance between moving parts can easily flow through the clearance space without doing any damage, and the particles that are too large to enter the clearance gap are blocked out. It is the particles that are similar in size to your engine’s clearances that you need to worry about. When you do the math, you’ll find that .0025" vertical bearing clearance yields out a clearance space of .00125" (half of the total clearance is on each side of the journal). One and a half thousandths is equal to 32 microns, so particle sizes you can’t see are the ones that you need to worry about. Here are 3 practical steps you can take during the assembly of an engine to rid yourself of these unseen assassins. 1. Clean YOuR PaRTs beFORe insTallaTiOn: Driven recommends using a foaming degreaser to lift the greasy film from parts. 2. use an Oil FilTeR WiTh FineR miCROns duRing bReak-in: A production car filter will have a finer micron rating than a racing filter will have. After the initial 30 minute break-in period, change the oil filter. TeCh bulleTins vaRiable valve Timing The majority of variable valve timing (VVT) engines use motor oil as a hydraulic fluid to run the timing mechanisms. This change adds a whole new wrinkle to what you need your motor oil to do. In addition to providing anti-wear and fluid film protection for your engine, the motor oil in a variable valve timing engine must also resist foaming and shearing. Obviously foam is a poor lubricant, and it is an even worse hydraulic fluid. The air in an engine can be compressed, and a good hydraulic fluid should be basically incompressible. If your motor oil foams, you could be in trouble. The other area that could affect the performance of the VVT is shear stability. Viscosity is the most important property of a lubricant, and motor oils are required to work over a very wide range of temperatures – good examples are starting a car in Minnesota in January or driving a car in Arizona in July. To improve the viscosity attributes of the oil, polymer additives called Viscosity Index Improvers are added. These Viscosity Index Improver polymers can be degraded under high shear conditions. Think about stretching a rubber band. Pull too hard and it breaks. This can happen in VVT engines as the oil is being forced through the narrow passages of the VVT under high hydraulic and mechanical load. The shearing or breaking down of the Viscosity Index Improver polymer leads to lower oil pressure and degraded viscosity characteristics. Both of these will affect the performance of the VVT system. Overhead cam with phaser in VVT engine A secondary effect of both foaming and shearing is increased oxidation that will shorten the life of the motor oil. As the aerated and sheared oil interacts with the oxygen in the air (and unburnt Ethanol-blended fuel), oxidation of the motor oil increases. If the oil becomes highly oxidized, the engine can be harmed by the deposits and acids left behind by the oxidized oil. A high performance engine that utilizes VVT technology needs to be filled with a high performance oil that resists foaming and provides shear stability. The hydraulic industry recognizes the KRL shear stability test as the standard for determining if an oil is shear stable enough for heavy-duty applications. Owners of VVT engines should look for motor oils that perform well in this test. Many off-the-shelf brands of motor oil lose more than 25% of their High Temperature High Shear viscosity during the KRL test compared to less than 10% in Driven’s line of high performance street oils. It is also a good idea to look for an oil with a low foaming tendency. Finally, many VVT engines feature overhead camshafts (OHC), and these cams are driven via timing chains. Proper anti-wear additives are important to protect these chains and gears from wearing during high performance use. For track day car owners that have engines featuring VVT, a motor oil with a little extra ZDDP in it would be helpful. Keeping the oil changed on a regular basis is also important for keeping the engine clean. Hydraulic systems need to be kept much cleaner than a normal engine. This means changing the oil filter regularly if the car sees a lot of track days, and keeping the oil change interval to a reasonable mileage – no 10,000 mile oil drains here. 3. Change The Oil aFTeR bReak-in: Most of the wear metals that will be created in an engine’s life will occur during the first hour of operation. It’s cheap insurance to change the oil after break-in. 68 Anglo American Oil Company Ltd • +44(0)1929 551557 • www.aaoil.co.uk • [email protected] Sunoco_UK Sunoco UK AAOIL 69 TeCh bulleTins Oil mYThs FACT VS. FICTIoN ROlleR Cam bReak-in fiction While everyone understands the need for proper break-in oil for flat tappet camshafts, many people don’t think twice when it comes to breaking in a roller cam. But according to a growing number of engine builders, piston ring manufacturers and cam grinders, the difference can be substantial, especially as more engine builders are using roller cams to handle higher valve spring loads and turn more RPM. Oil that “wears-in” rings will create a lot of fine metal particulate that can kill a roller cam. During break-in an engine can create up to four times the particulate material than it does after break-in, and according to bearing manufacturer, Timken, it’s the main cause of premature roller bearing failure. Some break-in oils designed to accelerate the break-in process generate higher levels of wear metal. However, if the oil is friction modified, then the rings won’t seat properly, so striking the right balance is critical. Another issue is that roller cams typically support higher spring pressures and contact loads than traditional lifters and rockers. This is where high ZDDP (Zinc) additives enhance the anti-wear characteristics of the Driven BR Break-in Oil that protects these types of components during the critical break-in period. The protective layer of ZDDP anti-wear film smoothes out the peaks and valleys that comprise the microscopic surfaces on roller wheels and needle bearings. A smooth surface enables greater load carrying with less fatigue. According to Brian Reese of COMP Cams, the more aggressive the valve train is in terms of lift, duration and spring pressure, the less margin of error you have. “We are seeing a trend away from flat tappet engines because of the oil issues related to them. But just because you have a roller cam, doesn’t mean that it does not have to be broken in properly,” Reese says. “NASCAR-level engine programs like Joe Gibbs Racing are still doing 30 minute break-ins on their roller cam engines because they have learned the hard way what happens when they don’t.” Valve train experts agree that the most critical time for any engine is during break-in, so it pays off to spend extra time on the details. COOlanT sYsTem CORROsiOn It is not uncommon for cooling system corrosion issues to develop for racers and performance enthusiasts alike. This can occur whether they are using a coolant additive or anti-freeze. It sounds like it could be a complicated problem, but the real culprit is easy to pinpoint…water. The presence of hard water minerals like calcium and magnesium can cause corrosion inside your engine’s cooling system. Using tap water or well water to mix your anti-freeze can lead to this destructive corrosion process. Vital components such as the radiator, water pump and cylinder heads (iron or aluminum) all can be affected, leading to a loss of overall cooling efficiency. There is a simple solution to this problem, however. Driven Racing Oil developed CSP (Coolant System Protector) in response to the corrosion problems the Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR teams faced due to the sanctioning body’s rule that does not allow competitors to run anti-freeze. NASCAR requires only pure H2O. Driven CSP neutralizes hard water minerals like Calcium and Magnesium so that they cannot cause the aforementioned corrosion in your cooling system. It can be used with both anti-freeze and regular water and also reduces the surface tension of water, allowing for better heat transfer for improved cooling. In addition, CSP lubricates water pumps for improved pump life. 70 fiction Flat tappet engines can’t use synthetic oil because the lifters won’t rotate – the synthetic oil is too slippery. This is a variation on the first myth that has become popular since flat tappet camshaft failures began to increase about a decade ago. Like the first myth, the origin relates to the misapplication of passenger car motor oil. Twenty years ago it was common for racers to use off-the-shelf motor oils in their racing engines because the oils contained enough ZDDP (Zinc) to protect aggressive camshaft designs. Over time though, the ZDDP levels in synthetic off-the-shelf oils were reduced due to EPA regulations for passenger cars. This reduction caused these formulations to be insufficient for protecting flat tappet camshafts. This implied that the problem was with the synthetic oil rather than the lack of ZDDP. However, choosing a synthetic motor oil with special formulation that includes more ZDDP will protect your flat tappet camshaft. Once you use synthetic motor oil, you can never change back to conventional oil. An engine running conventional motor oil can change to synthetic motor oil, and vice versa. However, it is not a good idea to switch back and forth between different BraNds of oil. But more importantly than brand, use the correct tyPe of oil for your engine. Most high performance and racing engines are actually broken in initially on conventional oil (specially formulated for engine break-in) and then switched to a properly formulated synthetic oil for use after break-in. The key is to select an oil formulated for the specific needs of your application, and then stick with that product. fact Synthetic oils are bad for engines with old seals. This myth turns out to be true in MOST (but not all) applications. “Old” refers to engines built before 1992. Synthetic base oils are not compatible with many of the traditional seal materials, and even with “seal conditioner” additives, synthetic oils are harder on traditional seal materials than conventional oils. To avoid leaking seals, avoid very light synthetic motor oils in older engines. The low viscosity and resulting free flowing nature of the synthetic make it easier for the oil to find a leak path. Higher viscosity oils tend to leak less. The corrosion issue is magnified in motorsports, as many racing series and tracks do not allow teams to use anti-freeze in the cooling system, and straight water alone is more corrosive because of the minerals inside. Some racers will use water together with a coolant additive to combat some of the downsides of using water by itself, but typical coolant additives do nothing to help prevent hard water corrosion. Driven CSP will work for a full season of racing and should be drained and refilled after the end of each one. Driven Racing Oil CSP can be used in any racing series or sanctioning body where water is required. The roots of this myth are based in the misapplication of passenger car motor oil in motorcycles. The power density of motorcycle engines places greater shear forces on the motor oil than passenger car engines do, and as a result, most passenger car motor oils are not appropriate for use in a motorcycle. The resulting failures were blamed on the synthetic oil. However, the problem wasn’t the synthetic base oil, it was the fact that synthetic oil was not formulated for the needs of a motorcycle engine. A properly formulated synthetic motorcycle oil will provide superior performance in the engine it was designed for. Likewise, a properly formulated synthetic passenger car motor oil will provide superior performance in a passenger car engine. fiction Roller cam and lifters Synthetic motor oil is too slippery. It causes roller bearings to slide instead of roll, which causes the bearings to fail. dRiven mainTains a Full libRaRY OF TeChniCal aRTiCles & hOW-TO guides. Through careful observation and listening to feedback from key team members and experts in the motorsport world, a brand new range of highquality products began to emerge - each designed and developed to cater for a specific need that had been highlighted by people at the sharp end of the sport. As well as blend chemicals that would produce excellent results every time, it was important that the products performed quickly and efficiently, as time is crucial in the heat of competition. To achieve this, each and every item was tested in race conditions and, it wasn't until all the boxes were ticked, did they get the green light to go into production. Kleers has also gone a step further than just the chemical formulation of the products themselves and has carefully considered the type of container required for each application – making sure that it is the right size and uses the right dispensing mechanism - features that make them efficient and easy to use. Added to this, each item has been distinctively branded to differentiate it from the company's mainstream range of premium quality car care products. Already, Kleers Motorsport products are being used by some of the world's leading team's in some of the world's most prestigious events, including Formula 1, the World Rally Championship, the World Endurance Championship, Le Mans, NASCAR, Grand Am, ALMS and a range of high profile GT championships – to name but a few. After studying the amount of debris: rubber, insects and general grime that is collected from the race-track, it became apparent that the interruption in air-flow – albeit small in same cases – could cause drag or sometimes the loss of aerodynamic efficiency, especially if the unwanted items were stuck to leading edges, splitters, wings, body panels and flat-floors. In addition, these objects would add weight to the vehicle, particularly in long-distance events. By using the kit’s Paint Cleaner and applying Kleers Aero Performer liquid using the colour-coded microfibre cloths, debris build up and therefore drag is dramatically reduced on the treated areas. There are no visible signs of using the product once it has been applied. • This product is recommended for use on high performing, aero-sensitive racing cars, such as: F1, GP2,F3, LMP1, LMP2, GT, GTE, NASCAR, GrandAm, V8 etc. • Not recommended for use on glass or plastic windows • 50ml refill bottles can be purchased separately • For a detailed presentation and technical information about Aero Performer, please contact us Specifically formulated for motorsport use Currently used by front running F1 teams and other leading competitors in GT, LMP and saloon car racing Developed using an on-track test programme Proven results from independent wind tunnel tests Reduces surface drag by 1.4% Keeps surfaces slick and smooth Dramatically reduces build up of rubber marbles and bugs Maintains aerodynamic balance and reduces additional race weight caused by debris Long lasting protection Contents: 50ml Aero Performer liquid preparation, 4 x Kleers Microfibre Finishing Cloths, 250ml Kleers Paint Cleaner Aero Performer Surface Preparation Kit and Aero Performer Refill No sooner had Kleers launched its range of market leading car care products in spring 2010, the company began to develop a brand new range designed specifically for motorsport applications.
