Rural visionary
Fairmont woman sees switchgrass and
willows where others see corn and beans
By Justin R. Lessman
When Linda Meschke looks out
over southwestern Minnesota’s
endless fields of corn and soybeans
dotted with massive ethanol
plants, she can almost see fields of
switchgrass and willow trees and
the facilities that could be used to
turn those perennials and others
like them into fuel.
“Corn ethanol is only one
form of bioenergy,” said Meschke,
president and founder of Fairmontbased Rural Advantage. “I’m in the
business of promoting third crops,
and I can see a day when we have
perennials on the ground intended
for bioenergy production instead
of corn.”
Meschke, a Park Rapids native
and daughter of a beef farmer,
founded Rural Advantage a little
more than five years ago. It is a
nonprofit corporation dedicated
to the advancement of third crops
and the improvement of rural
opportunities for agriculture,

2009 Beef Cow/Calf Day
The University of Minnesota Beef Team will again be hosting a Beef Cow/Calf Day in Pipestone in 2009.
The program is scheduled for Wednesday, February 18 at Minnesota West Community and Technical College
and will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The Cow/Calf Day program is designed to address some of the current issues facing today’s cow/calf
producers and this year’s theme is “Cow Size”. Many of the topics of this year’s Cow/Calf Day are aimed at
helping producers to take a closer look at cow size and to help determine what size cow would be ideal for
different producers in different situations.
Dr. Bryan McMurray from Cargill Animal Nutrition will address the topic of “Functionality of Cow Size”
and Dr. Alfredo DiCostanzo will give a talk titled, “Nutritional Effects on Cow Size.” These two lectures will
specifically address cow size and its impact on beef cow/calf operations. In addition, Dr. Grant Crawford
will lecture on “Post-Weaning Calf Management”. Other topics of the day will include a discussion about
emerging issues in the beef industry, a short presentation addressing some observed benefits of rotational
grazing, and current updates from the U of M Beef Team.
Undoubtedly, there will be something for everyone at this event. The cost of the program is $25 per person.
Additional members of the same family or farm are free. A noon meal, snacks and refreshments, a copy of
the day’s proceedings, and a wealth of valuable information are all included in the $25 registration fee. To
pre-register, please call the Pipestone County Extension Office at 507-825-6715 or email [email protected].
For more information, please contact the Pipestone County Extension Office or visit the Beef Team website at:

Ask an expert about crop insurance
Barb Anderson, a crop insurance
specialist with Cattnach Insurance
Agency in Luverne, answers questions
about trends and fundamentals in crop
insurance for 2009.
of soybean losses due to the fall harvest
price being considerably less than the
spring price. The policy also offers a
guarantee against price increases if the
fall price exceeds the spring price.
Q: How does crop insurance protect
producers against not only Mother Nature,
but price and yield fluctuations?
Q: Have there been any changes in crop
insurance to any of the basic policies?
A: Producers have many options when
purchasing their crop insurance policy.
They can choose from policies that
protect only against a yield loss, or
policies that protect yield and price loss.
The RA (Revenue Assurance) and CRC
(Crop Revenue Coverage) policies protect
a producer against both production and
revenue losses. In 2008, the area saw a lot
A: The biggest difference that producers
will notice is the lower spring price
this year, resulting in lower coverage
guarantees and premiums. The CRC
and RA policies have also changed with
regard to maximum price fluctuations.
In addition, enterprises have been given
an increased subsidy, making them more
attractive to producers for 2009.
Q: In 2008, a crop insurance discount was
offered to eligible producers in the states
of Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.
This Pilot Biotech Yield Endorsement
(BYE) could be applied to the crop
insurance premium for non-irrigated corn
that is planted to a qualifying hybrid. How
many producers took advantage of this
BYE discount and will it be offered again
in 2009?
A: I estimate that roughly 20 percent
of my producers applied for the BYE
discount in 2008. The pilot program is
again available for 2009. It is now called
the BE (Biotech Endorsement) and has
been expanded to include more seed
companies and more states — South
Dakota, for example, is one of the states
that has been added.
Q: What are the primary factors impacting
crop insurance premium rates and will
producers see an increase in 2009?
A: The price and yield determine
the premium a producer pays. Most
producers will see a decrease in premium
for the 2009 crop year due to the lower
market prices.
Q: By what date do producers need to
sign-up for crop insurance? Why is this
date chosen and imposed?
A: March 15. The date is set by the
USDA’s Risk Management Agency, and is
strictly imposed

Sesquicentennial Farm applications due April 1
St. Paul- The Minnesota Department of Agriculture
(MDA) and Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation
(MFBF) are proud to announce the continuation of
the Sesquicentennial Farm Recognition Program.
Last year, the MDA awarded over 90 farms with this
distinction as the state of Minnesota celebrated its
Sesquicentennial Year.
 Minnesota Farm Bureau’s Sesquicentennial
Farm program will honor Minnesota families who
have owned their farms for at least 150 years. The
Sesquicentennial Farm program recognizes family
farms according to the following qualifications:
• The farm must be at least 150 years old this year
(2009) according to the abstract of title, land patent,
original deed, county land records, court file in
registration proceedings or other authentic land
records. Please do not send originals or copies of
records.
• Your family must have owned the farm for
150 years or more. “Family” is defined as parents,
grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, sons,
daughters, first cousins and direct in-laws (father,
mother, brother, sister, daughter, son-in-law).
• Continuous residence on farm is not required,
but ownership must be continuous.
• The farm should consist of 50 or more acres, and
currently be involved in agricultural production.
A commemorative certificate signed by the
Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation President
Kevin Paap, Minnesota Department of Agriculture
Commissioner Gene Hugoson and Governor Tim
Pawlenty will be awarded to qualifying families, along
with an outdoor sign signifying Sesquicentennial Farm
recognition. Information on all Sesquicentennial
Farm families will be available at the Minnesota Farm
Bureau exhibit during the 2009 State Fair, August 27
through Labor Day, September 7.

FSA Direct Attribution and Payment Limit
By: Mark Zinnel, CED
The method in which FSA limits program
payments was significantly changed by the 2008
Farm Bill. For 2009 and subsequent crop years,
payments will be limited by direct attribution to
individuals and entities. A legal entity is defined
as an entity created under federal or state laws that
own land or an agricultural commodity, product,
or livestock. Through direct attribution, payment
limitation is based on the total payments received
by the individual, both directly and indirectly. Under
direct attribution, payments made to individuals
remain unchanged. However, payments to legal
entities, such as corporations, limited partnerships,
limited liability companies, trusts, and other similar
entities are limited by attributing the payment to an
individual based on their direct and indirect interest
in the entity.
For example, Producer A receives a DCP direct
payment of $32,000 as an individual. In addition,
Producer A has a 33.33% interest in Corporation
ABC, which earns $30,000 in DCP direct payments.
The application of direct attribution would result in
$10,000 being attributed to Producer A, resulting in
total earnings of $42,000. Since the limitation for DCP
direct payments is $40,000, Producer A’s payments
will be reduced by $2,000.
The new farm bill now requires each member
of any entity to provide active personal labor or
active personal management or a combination that
is performed on a regular basis, identifiable and
documentable and separate and distinct from the
contributions of any other member.
Qualifying spouses are eligible to be considered
separate individuals for payment limitation purposes,
rather than being automatically combined under
one payment limitation with their spouse. For more
information regarding the new payment limitation
rules, contact your local FSA Office.
The following are the program payment limitations

Good financial statements help farm families
By James Kurtz,
University of Minnesota Extension
In the last few decades, much progress has
been made to standardize financial statements in
agriculture.
This allows for ratios and measurements
commonly used in other industries to become
standard in the farmer’s financial world. Now the
individual farmer can measure and understand the
strengths and weaknesses within his financial life,
and to benchmark himself with others in his peer
group.
How much family living must come from the farm?
In some cases, all of it must. In other cases none of it
has to. These items help to define how adequate the
working capital is. The definition of “liquidity” is the
ability of the farm business to generate sufficient
cash flow for family living, taxes and debt payment.
If the bills pile up faster than they can be paid, or
the operating loan has to be refinanced because it
will not get paid off, liquidity is not sufficient. Does
that mean that you are broke? No! In fact you could
be very wealthy, but just not “liquid” enough.
The Center for Farm Financial Management at the
University of Minnesota has been a key player in this
evolution. The FINPACK software developed by them
is leader in the farming industry. The information
here applies to the financial statements and radio
analysis produced by the FINPACK software.
With good financial statements, excellent
measurements can be made in liquidity, solvency,
profitability, repayment capacity and efficiency. A
balance sheet is necessary to measure “liquidity”
and “solvency.” In order to measure “profitability,”
“repayment capacity” and “efficiency,” a good accrual
adjusted income statement is also needed.
As farm family members better understand their
own financial settlements, ratios and measurements,
they will become less and less financially vulnerable.
That is important. After all, it is their financial life.

Sheep operation
ideal business
for Sik family
By Steven Swenson
When Robin Sik of rural Lake
Benton lost her job in 2002, she
went out and bought 18 bottle
lambs from commercial sheep
producer, Randy Noble.
She sold the bottle lambs back
to Noble in the fall, and then
purchased 12 ewes from him. And
now the flock has expanded to its
present size
of 375.
“We went
from 10 to
100 when
we bought a
flock from a
gentleman
up
by
Staples, and
then every
year
we
have about
doubled in
size,” Robin said.
Robin’s decision to raise sheep
came after she lost her job and her
husband Corey decided to go back
to school. The couple sold the beef
cattle they were raising on their
Lake Benton farm and expanded
their flock. With her husband
working long hours, Robin found
she could tend the flock while
staying home with the Sik’s five
children aged 12 and under.
Though Robin considers the
sheep her thing, she also said she
couldn’t run the operation without
the help of her children and
husband.
Working around livestock was
nothing new for Robin or Corey
— both were raised on dairy farms.
But their experience with dairy and
beef cattle didn’t apply to sheep.
To assist their learning curve, they
became members of the Pipestone
Lamb and Wool Program for
about a year but discontinued
involvement and struck out on
their own, developing a system
with the help of advice from other
sheep producers.
“We are kind of self-taught
through trial and error,” Robin
chuckled.
Sik said their operation uses
similar procedures as others with a
drop barn, lambing pens and a 24hour family pen. They began with
Polypay sheep, or Dorset cross,
and have remained with that cross
for several reasons, including their
mothering abilities.
“The reason we like that breed is
because they are a little bit smaller,
easier for me to handle,” Robin
said. “They don’t eat as much as
the larger, black-faced ewe and
they have more multiple births.”
Robin achieved a 2.4 lambing
percentage during her first year
lambing, which included seven sets
of quads and 43 sets of triplets.
“I think I had 63 bottle lambs,”
Robin said. “That made it
interesting because I didn’t really
know how to feed bottle lambs at
the time, especially in group size.”
Robin has maintained a lambing
percentage of 2.0 or higher each of
the past five years.
“This has been our lowest year
so far and right now we are a 1.89
percentage,” she said.
Robin divides her ewes into two
lambing groups. The first group
of 240 ewes begins Jan. 15. The
second group of 140 ewes begins
March 15. The separation allows
her to take time off in February to
reorganize, and to maximize her
facility space.
“ W e

the Siks began raising sheep, they
only had a hog house and a steel
garage.  At first, they used an old
trailer house as a lambing pen.
Taking the idea from the man who
originally sold them their sheep,
they gutted the trailer and installed
plywood floor to create a lambing
pen that was easy to clean, had

good air quality and could remain
permanently in place. The old
trailer even has curtains and a few
posters on the walls.
“We didn’t take anything down,”
she said.
When the flock grew to 180 in
number, it outgrew the trailer. The
Siks built an insulated and heated
drop barn, but never completely
abandoned the trailer.
“We still take the sheep back to
the trailer house to be penned-up
after they lamb,” Robin said.
The Siks then built a hay barn
to use for feed for half the year.
With some plastic sheeting and
southern exposure, the barn serves
double-duty as a finishing barn.
Each sheep producer has their
own system for keeping records and
marking lambs. When lambs are
born, Robin marks with paint. For
the ewe lambs for replacements,
she marks with ear notches. A twin
receives one ear notch, and if it’s
a triplet, it gets two. Robin uses a
spreadsheet to record particulars
like tag numbers. As the ewes are
lambing, she can then compare
records from the previous year.
“If they’re a single then I check
the records and if they were a
single the previous lambing, then
we orange tag them,” Robin said.

“Rural Advantage’s mission is
to promote the connections
between agriculture, the
environment and rural
communities in order to improve
ecological health, economic
viability and rural vitality.”
The first consists of organizational initiatives.
Rural Advantage is a grant-funded organization,
Meschke said, which looks to maintain innovative,
progressive programming in combination with
identifying new funding opportunities, both of
which she said are critical to the organization’s
long-terms success.
Visibility is an important component, she said,
which she expects to drive change, including
mindset change on a variety of issues centered
on landscape changes toward a more sustainable
society.
She is taking steps currently to raise visibility and
educate the public by hosting a series of free “Third
Crop Producer Meetings” in Fairmont every other
Monday through March. The day-long meetings
feature a variety of researchers, scholars and

year. After harvest, they let the
wheat grow back for grazing.
“We have about 75 acres of total
ground here and we try and utilize
the 75 acres for grazing as much as
we can,” Robin said. “The wheat
stubble has worked out excellent
for us.”
Once the ground freezes, the
sheep graze corn stocks.
“So really we don’t start feeding
“That way, we don’t have to go
back and do that three months
later. It’s easier to do at lambing,
when it’s fresh in your mind, than
later, and having to wonder if a

been weaned and fattened. After
weaning, the lambs are fed on a
diet of grass hay or pasture. The
them until mid-November, if
possible,” Robin said.
During the winter months, the
sheep receive alfalfa or orchard
grass for hay, depending upon their
diet and their feeding capabilities.
Most of the hay is purchased, but
the Siks seeded down nine acres
