One of the most iconic Disney villains, Maleficent is the essence of pure evil. But we never knew what made her that way. In theaters May 30, 2014 Maleficent, the new live-action film directed by Robert Stromberg and starring Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, takes a deeper look at the unrepentant mistress of mayhem. The film reveals her untold story and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she rules, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever. We’re taking this great villain and revealing layers of information about her—examining her personality and motivations from new angles. We’re exploring a variety of emotions that take her character to levels we’ve never experienced.” The journey begins with the script by Linda Woolverton, but it takes a variety of creative skills to complete the tale. As we take our journey through Maleficent’s emotional story, the costumes, lighting and scenic design must all play in unison to reflect her psychological changes, according to Robert. “The subtlest change in costume color or in the temperature of the lighting from warm and bright to cool and dark help communicate the character’s emotional arc and steer the audience’s emotions,” Robert explains. Music plays an important psychological role as well. “We were walking many lines with the music,” Robert says. “We wanted to appeal to audiences who knew and loved the original film score, which is based on Tchaikovsky’s ballet ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ but we also wanted to appeal to today’s audiences. As a character, Maleficent has several musical themes in the film, and they evoke different emotions depending on the instrumentation, which changes the emotional tone.” James Newton Howard wrote the film score. “He’s fabulous at capturing emotional arcs musically,” Robert says. Popular songwriter-singer Lana Del Rey was hand-picked by Angelina Jolie to cover the film’s title song “Once Upon a Dream.” It is a dark and hauntingly beautiful new rendition of the song from the 1959 film. But of course, it’s the actor’s performance that ultimately brings the character to life. “Angelina brought so much depth and soul to Maleficent’s character,” Robert says. “She was in love with this character and really wanted to explore who Maleficent is. She was so engaged in the entire process, including the costumes shop and makeup, and even the jewelry and headpieces. Her enthusiasm made the development process so enjoyable.” “Angelina created a very sharp, witty, well-thought-out characterization—exactly what the character needed. Walk Through a Fairytale Since the walkthrough opened on April 28, 1957, in Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland® Park, Guests have been able to literally step into the story setting of the animated film classic. The journey tells the film’s story through intricately detailed dioramas, beautiful hand-illustrated books and special effects. Re-imagined more than once since its opening, and most recently in 2008, today Maleficent plays a significant role in the show, appearing five times (not including the illuminated manuscripts). During the last re-imagination, one scene showing her with her Goons required Imagineers to crane a piece of glass over 10-feet-tall in through an opening on the Castle roof. “I believe the walkthrough brings Guests emotionally closer to the film,” says Chris Merritt, Imagineering Art Director. “And just being inside the original Sleeping Beauty Castle that Walt built is a very extraordinary experience!” To step into the story, enter the Castle gates into Fantasyland and turn left to an arched stone doorway. Throughout the project, I worked very closely with Casey, Scenic Designer Bob Crowley and Lighting Designer Natasha Katz to be sure the costumes worked with their designs and the action on stage.” he Genie glimmers like a mirage against a dark sky. A parade fills the stage with dazzling color. Capes swirl, veils float as if stirred by the breeze of an Arabian night and gossamer fabrics sparkle with thousands of shimmering beads. When the curtain rises on Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City, audiences will feel as if they’ve been transported by a magic carpet into a world of fantastical, spectacular beauty. And much of it was created—stitch by meticulous stitch—by Tony Award®– winning Costume Designer Gregg Barnes and his team. And there was no Genie to help! “It’s a really big show,” says Gregg. “Counting the understudies and swings, we created 337 costumes. Normally a Broadway musical requires about half that number. And that’s not talking about custom-made headpieces, 161 pairs of handmade shoes and innumerable handcrafted accessories and jewelry pieces. We used 1,225 different fabrics, 83 of which were custom designed.” But Gregg’s first challenge wasn’t just the sheer size and scope of the project. “Everyone knows and loves the animated film,” he says. “I had to find a way to honor its spirit, 12 6 Learn more more at at DisneyDebit.com DisneyRewards.com Learn FALL 2012 SUMMER 2014 but bring something new that didn’t just duplicate the look of the film. That’s the line all of us had to walk.” “Aladdin is a fantasy story, but I needed to find elements in the real world to inspire the designs. Audiences have to relate to what they see—at least subliminally.” Director Casey Nicholaw wanted the characters to have a modern feel— something that today’s audiences would relate to. “So I gave one actor Arabian shoes modeled on high-fashion sneakers and another a big belt inspired by the back of a motorcycle,” Gregg adds. Not only do the costumes need to be easy to move in, delicate in design and withstand hundreds of performances, they have to be easy to get in and out of—quickly! “There are an average of 11 costumes for each member of the ensemble,” Gregg says. “It’s a huge number of costume changes—and they all have to happen very, very quickly.” There are 108 costume changes that must take place in less than 1 minute, 58 costume changes that occur in less than 30 seconds, and in the Prince Ali sequence 80 changes take place in under 8 seconds. “And we’re not just talking about putting on a new cape or turban, but entire outfits. You can imagine what it takes to organize all that backstage.” “Of course, we’re constantly refining everything we do,” Gregg adds. “Most of the design work is developed before the acting company begins rehearsals. There are always things we think are going to work, that don’t at first, so we’re tweaking shapes, colors—everything—all the way to opening night. Being part of this production is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Gregg says. “With a show like this you can let your imagination go.” “Casey said he wanted the palace scenes to look like the last scene in ‘it’s a small world’ at the Disney Theme Parks, with that lavish sugar-coated sparkle,” Gregg says. “So I spent a lot of time researching contemporary wedding dresses with lavish beading and lace.” Over 712 different bead styles added the sparkle Casey wanted. And one costume alone, a pair of men’s pants in the final section of the show-stopping “Friend Like Me,” is adorned with 1,428 Swarovski crystals. T Discover the Spectacular Beauty of Broadway’s Aladdin Once the designs were finalized, costumes were cut from muslin and fitted to the actors. “I always have the actors dance in their first fitting. They have to be able to move easily in anything we create. Each costume needs to look as delicate as a butterfly’s wings, but wear like a suit of armor.” Gregg was also inspired by the rich colors, textures and patterns of Oriental carpets, and used them extensively in his designs. Dusty, the determined crop duster who proved himself in Disney’s Planes (2013), is one of them. But what happens when he can no longer do the thing he loves most—air racing? In theaters July 18, 2014 He shifts gears, of course. Proving that you just can’t keep a good plane down, Dusty launches into the world of wildfire air attack and learns what it takes to become a real hero. “Dusty is looking for a second chance,” says director Bobs Gannaway. “The question the film asks is ‘if you lose your dream, can you embrace another one?’” Most wildfire attack planes were not initially built for that purpose, so Dusty is joining a world of firefighters who are also on their second chance in life. It’s a world that requires courage and selflessness. Dusty’s pals from Propwash Junction are back, along with a whole new crew of unforgettable characters, including veteran fire and rescue 8 Learn more at DisneyDebit.com SUMMER 2014 helicopter Blade Ranger, spirited airtanker Lil’ Dipper, heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter, ex-military transport Cabbie and a lively bunch of brave all-terrain vehicles known as the Smokejumpers. “One of my favorite characters is Mayday, the Propwash Junction fire truck,” Bobs says. “He’s a lovable old WWII fire and crash vehicle who hasn’t been challenged by a fire in 20 years. When a large fire breaks out at Propwash Junction, he’s unprepared, and it’s up to Dusty to help him.” As with Planes, meticulous research went into the creation of Planes: Fire & Rescue. “We always want to draw our stories and characters from the real world,” explains Ferrell Barron, producer. “We spent a lot of time researching and met a fantastic group of selfless, strong people who have all been wonderful in helping us make this story real.” “Fire itself is a main character in the movie,” Bobs points out. “There are over 650 visual effects involving fire, smoke and water. There hasn’t been a lot of fire animation done before, so early in the film’s development, we knew we had to get a jump on animating those effects.” It took about two-and-ahalf years of research and development to create a fire that looked and felt real on screen. In fact, the team succeeded so well, that at one point, the fire effects had to be scaled back! “The fire effects were definitely challenging,” Ferrell adds. “But actually the whitewater rapid rescue sequence was probably even more complex. You not only have the water, spray and mist, but you also have to capture the effect of the water on the characters as it comes into contact with them and pushes them around. I think Planes: Fire & Rescue is the most visually complex film we’ve made at Disneytoon Studios to date.” But both Bobs and Ferrell remind us that effects are only there to support the drama and humor of the story. “Our first goal is to bring truth to our stories and characters,” Bobs adds. “And the same goes for our visual effects. We want the audience to become so immersed in the world that they connect emotionally to the characters and what’s happening to them. It’s a very engaging story set in a world that’s quite unique.” “It’s also a tribute to the heroic actions of firefighters everywhere,” Ferrell explains. “They are the people brave enough to run into a building when everyone else is running out. This film is devoted to all the firefighters throughout the world who put their lives on the line for strangers. They are true heroes.” Fly into theaters to see Planes: Fire & Rescue. Those scenes in the film are so clever and amusing, we thought we could ‘mine’ a lot of fun from them,” he says with a chuckle. “It’s part of the Snow White story we’ve never told in a Theme Park attraction before.” The whimsical attraction is located in the enchanted forest of New Fantasyland, an expansive area outside the castle walls. “All our New Fantasyland stories and architecture lead to the enchanted forest of New Fantasyland, and we wanted to create an attraction that would become a very dynamic center point in that area,” Dave explains. “We wanted Fantasy Forest to have a very different feel, so we’ve added a lot more topography and elevations including the mountain which is the home of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. You can walk around about 80% of it and enjoy some amazing kinetic views of the train moving in and out of the mine. It’s beautiful.” As Guests progress along a shady tree-lined path, they’ll see the Dwarfs’ cottage meticulously recreated from the film. “It’s the first time we’ve ever built this cottage in any of the Disney Theme Parks,” Dave points out. In the last scene of the attraction itself, Guests even get a glimpse inside the cottage. The story begins in the queue, where Guests can help sort and wash jewels or enter the vault where the Dwarfs have stored their gems. The commitment to 10 Learn more at DisneyDebit.com SUMMER 2014 storytelling authenticity continues to the experience itself. “We looked at a lot of different ideas, and thought ‘How much fun would it be if the cars pivoted like they do in the film?’” Dave says. New technology allows the cars to sway from side to side and pivot as they go around curves. “It’s very smooth,” Dave points out. “One of our major goals was to be sure it would appeal to a broad age range. We wanted enough thrills, but we also wanted to make sure the entire family could enjoy it together.” The attraction itself is rich in authentic details which help immerse Guests in the story. Walt Disney Imagineers spent hours poring over the mine scenes in the film, then captured every detail from the lanterns to the woodgrain and even the smallest bolt heads. No two cars look the same, even differing in the types of wood and metal used in their construction. It was as if the Dwarfs had built them one at a time over the years using whatever they found in the forest or mine. Artists painted the cars layer by layer, distressing the paint and adding hit spots and scrapes to show where they banged into something. “It’s all part of the storytelling,” Dave says. “Everything needs to feel like it’s in the right world so that the story is believable.” “The New Fantasyland expansion is the largest ever created at Magic Kingdom® Park, and the mine train is the crowning jewel. We thought it would be fun to give you a fast look at all the buckle-up-andhang-on attractions, so you can plan your visit to the Disneyland® Resort to enjoy them all—one scream at a time. Inspired by the real Matterhorn, Walt decided to cover a forested 20-foot-high mound named Holiday Hill with artificial snow, add a toboggan run and rename it Snow Hill. However, Walt always dreamed big, and his “hill” grew into a 147-foot-tall “mountain.” The use of a tubular steel track and integration of a themed environment made Matterhorn Bobsleds the most innovative coaster of its time. Today it continues to offer thrill-seekers an exciting race through ice caverns and glacier grottos, complete with roars from the Abominable Snowman, who took up residence in the mountain in 1978. Fancy a spin through the galaxies? Take a high-speed whirl through Space Mountain, which opened on May 27, 1977.
