KEITH HARING— GLOBAL CITIZEN
The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) is a global nonprofit
organization. Guided by their vision that the United Nations is a powerful force in meeting
common global challenges and opportunities, WFUNA works to strengthen and improve
the UN by fostering a spirit of global citizenry. Keith Haring certainly saw himself as a
global citizen and was involved in many United Nations projects in the 1980s, especially
those that championed children, youth and diversity. His art often explored these themes
and sensibilities naturally. By collaborating with WFUNA, Haring was able to share
globally his ability to communicate universal ideas in a visual language that still looks
fresh and utterly unique today.
Lot 17, Untitled, 1988 (WFUNA), was created for a limited edition lithograph which
accompanied the United Nations’ stamp issue commemorating 1988 as International
Volunteer Year. The red, green and gold colors are a salute to Pan-African solidarity and
the prominent hands can be interpreted as ‘helping hands.’

Venus in Furs
Dalí’s artworks to illustrate Sacher-Masoch’s ground-breaking sado-masochistic novel Venus in Furs are considered
to be some of his finest. Mostly anchored in Dalí’s iconic landscapes, fetishistic objects—shoes, whips, chains, etc,
populate a tableaux of men and women in various states of submission and domination. The images express Dalí’s
tangled feelings about sex and the related subconscious drives according to Freud’s theory of Eros/Thanatos
and range from the more humorous, Man Kissing Shoe to the fearful Penis Alley, or the willingly submissive
Kneeling Woman. One of Dalí’s final collaborations with renowned surrealist publisher Pierre Argillet, Venus in
Furs represents one of Dalí’s last great forays in copper-plate etching, before he turned more consistently to other
printing techniques.

hough Picasso was introduced to the corrida at a young age by his father, themes of bullfighting, bulls
and the mythological half-man/half-bull Minotaur do not appear regularly in his work until the 1930s
when he was in his 50s. Generated by developing political conflicts, these depictions of the corrida as
a metaphor for life/death and nobility/savagery were one way that Picasso addressed the theme of war
that dominated Europe for so many years. Jaime Sabartes comments in Toreros (1961), “The bull is a wild

beast that must meet his fate head on, that must never flinch, never recoil from danger. The bull is the
symbol of fearlessness, strength and majesty, of passion and blind effort.” This nobility and savagery of
the bull fascinated Picasso and he identified with the animal as a metaphor for his own animal nature, a
symbol of virility and at times a representation of the Spanish people. Picasso also focused keenly on the
Picador, the man on horseback, whom he considered to be the most important element in the bullfight.
In Toreros, Jaime Sabartes remarks on Picasso’s picadors, “He is a man at war with himself, with the bull,
with the “aficion,” with his family, and with life.” Sabartes alludes here to Picasso’s ambivalence towards
the civilized version of life, i.e.: the man partnered with his horse who fights the bull but admires it deeply
nevertheless.
This dichotomy between bull and horse was one that Picasso explored again and again. Roland
Penrose wrote “the main involvement for Picasso was not so much the parade and the skill of the participants but with the ancient ceremony of the precarious triumph of man over beast…The man, his obedient
horse and the bull were all victims of an inextricable cycle of life and death.” This is first evident in his

Vollard prints where corrida scenes highlight bulls and horses fighting to the death as well as women on
horseback (lot 319). It is also a central theme in Picasso’s most famous work—Guernica (1937). However,
the Picador standing against the bull is the image that Picasso returns to repeatedly over the years indicating that this symbol signifies a personal archetype for him. Often with particular focus on the picador,
Picasso created an outpouring of bull and bullfighting imagery in the years from 1959 to 1961 in many different media, including the aquatints for Pepe Illo’s handbook (La Tauromaquia, o arte de torear); a fantastic spate of color linocuts (see lots 317, 318, and 321 for examples); and Le Picador (lot 324) from Toreros.
In the Tauromaquia aquatints, we see Picasso’s faithful account of the various phases of the traditional Spanish-style event. Every Spanish bullfight follows a choreography that begins with the paseillo
(the parade of players) and then the main event which follows in three parts, ending with the estocada, the
death blow. If the matador fights exceptionally well, showing true artistry and exceptional courage, he will
be lifted on the shoulders of the fans when carried from the ring (lot 334). In Picasso’s Tauromaquia it is
a final salute to the great matador Pepe Illo whose ultimate fate was to die in the ring, but whose courage
and style were legendary—a nod to his many dazzling successes rather than his final defeat. In this, the

omer’s two epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey, mark the genesis
of Western literature. The Odyssey in particular, Odysseus’ ten years
of adventure and travail as he returns home to Penelope and Ithaca, counts
as one of the greatest quest stories ever told. This enduring masterpiece
explores and elucidates all that it means to be human, notably, cowardice
vs. heroism, lust vs. enduring love, and temptation vs. discipline. Though

in Homer’s Odyssey, this fantastic tale retains the ability to enthrall us while
Chagall’s magical images uniquely stimulate our imagination.
An experienced traveler himself, Chagall was none-the-less enchanted
by the allure of Greek history and culture. His visits to Greece in the 1950’s
had a lasting effect on his creative output, subsequently inspiring numerous
paintings and several suites of lithographs related to Greek mythology, including Daphnis & Chloe, In the Land of the Gods, and finally, The Odyssey.
Robert Marteau remarked on Chagall’s Odyssey images, “How could Chagall have failed to be attracted by the Odyssey, by its turbulence and transparence, since worlds are mingled there, mutually transgressing upon each
other without confusion or corruption? As he does with the Bible, Chagall
greets in the Odyssey the flow of life, and from the stream he draws images
like a fisherman, images palpitating with the color of the elements, earth,
sea, sky, sun—images whose charcoal strokes, eluding outline signal a passage of light. Primacy of plant and animal life, artifice effaced by instinct,
craft released from effort, nature abandoned to the supernatural—these are
but a few of Chagall’s intrinsic articles of faith. If he disturbs the architecture
of the temple, perturbs the golden section, it is not through irreverence, but
to summon us to the non-conventional…” (Chagall Lithographe V, 6-7)
Chagall’s L’Odyssée portfolio is comprised of the complete text with 82
lithographs, 43 of which are in brilliant color. These lithographs were created
between December 1974 and June 1975 with the portfolio being published
in 1975. The lots here include all 43 of the magnificent color prints as well
as 15 prints from one of the rare deluxe sets printed on japon nacre and
hand-signed by the artist.

atisse was asked to illustrate Joyce’s Ulysses by the American publisher George Macey in 1935. Stories
differ as to if, and how much of, Joyce’s notoriously difficult book Matisse actually read, which makes for
an amusing story in itself. Suffice it to say that Matisse did at least understand there was a correlation in the
structure and characters between Joyce’s Ulysses and Homer’s Odyssey. Matisse’s modern and expressionistic line aesthetic dovetails nicely with Joyce’s stream-of-consciousness wordplay. Matisse’s tangled bodies in
The Calypso Episode and The Circe Episode are perfect examples of the bold and simplified lines he developed
to fruition in the 30s—reminiscent of his now iconic dancers painted for Dr. Albert Barnes in ’32-’33.

rté came of age as an artist during the remarkably fertile Roaring
Twenties and regularly showed a prescience for what would beco-
me wide-spread in 20th Century arts and design. His earliest fashion
designs for Paul Poiret, Henri Bendel and Harper’s Bazaar set the stage
for the flapper look that would become the rage of the Jazz Age. Art
Nouveau influences are evident in his emphasis on a woman’s grace,
poise and line; however, the Art Deco traits that would define the twenties
began to show early on in Erté’s symmetrical patterning and contrasting
colorations. His visual style elevated elegance and sophistication to a
new modern level and his drawings for both fashion and stage went well
beyond the typical designer’s sketches, displaying an artistry that defined
the time. Where many designer’s sketches tended toward the cartoonish
communication of an idea for purely commercial intent, Erté’s drawings

were fantasies as much as statements of intent for real items to be created and were masterpieces of Art Deco sensibility. Erté’s styles were also
crucial to the development of women’s fashion of the time, emblematic
of the daring changes in not only women’s attire, but in her silhouette,
hairstyles, and overall attitude.

In the 1960s, Erté’s Art Deco mastery was highlighted in the presti-

gious Art Deco retrospective at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris,
1966 and in 1967 the Museum of Metropolitan Art in New York purchased the entire collection of gouaches exhibited in Grosvenor Galleries’
New York show. The Met then featured them in their 1968 exhibition Erté
and Some of His Contemporaries—a ground-breaking exhibit for the Met
who prior to this had never exhibited a living artist’s work. This year, we
mark the Hermitage Museum’s celebration of Erté (Erté: An Art Deco
Genius. Return to St. Petersburg, June 22, 2016—September 18, 2016).
This momentous event marks the return of a prodigal son, one who left
his homeland for Paris to revel in the spirit of the age and in doing so,
came to define that age.

as a Van’s Artist Brand Ambassador. However,
she hesitates to confine herself to recent contemporary movements, citing inspiration from
Surrealism and traditional painting as key to her
work. The Surrealist Manifesto informs many of her narratives, providing
an emphasis on the subconscious or the dream state in the core of her
imagery. Reminiscent of Tarot cards, all of Nicholls’ work is both narrative
and highly symbolic, with hidden meanings carefully implanted within each
piece that reveal its story. All of her paintings have a mystery that can be
decoded. She admits that though she hopes viewers form their own personal connection with her works, they are inevitably and unapologetically
autobiographical.
In lot 913 (Seeing Hand in Antiquated Landscape), Nicholls pays homage to antique French Rococo landscape painting, adding a self-referential
element—the artist’s hand, symbolizing the creative human’s unique ability
to produce and set afire their own vision. The pair of complementary knots
shown in lots 908 and 909 suggest infinity and strength, but could just as
well advise caution against getting lost in utopian dreams as the figure-eight knot is a ‘stopper’ knot, used to prevent ropes from slipping out of
retaining devices in sailing and climbing. Lots 906 and 907 are from a series
of ‘Bell Jar’ paintings in which the artist has added the banners “Looking
Out From Within.” The images ask us to consider society’s marginalization
and segregation of unique and minority people and viewpoints. The Mineral
Girl lots (910, 911 and 912), inspired by time the artist spent visiting Europe’s
