Qualifications & Installation
INSTRUCTIONS
IMPORTANT NOTE: Nitterhouse Masonry Products recommends checking and following all local
Building Code requirements pertaining to the installation of Handcrafted Veneer Stone, in addition to
carefully following each of the installation instructions provided below.
STEP 1
STEP 2
Determine the Quantity Needed
Suggested Installation Methods
FLAT STONES
BLOCK MASONRY BACK UP
When estimating the number of flat stones needed,
multiply the height by the length of each area. Then
multiply the lineal footage of corners by 1/2 (one
lineal ft. of corner stones equals roughly 1/2 sq. ft. of
flat stones), and subtract this corner square footage
from total flat stone square footage. This will give the
total amount of flat stones required. Make sure to
subtract the square footage for any windows, doors,
or other openings.
Painted, Treated, Poured-in-Place,
or Sealed Masonry Surfaces:
CORNER STONES
When estimating the number of corner stones
needed, measure the height of each corner,
including any doorways and windows that will
have corners. This will provide the total linear
footage of corner stones needed.
OPTION 1 // Clean masonry surface by acid
etching, sand blasting, or wire brushing to
completely remove sealers, paint, or release agents.
Using Type S mortar, apply a 1⁄2-in.-thick scratch
coat to the entire masonry surface and allow to dry.
OPTION 2 // Apply 2.5 lb diamond mesh
expanded metal lath. Lath sides and ends should
overlap by 1 in. Install lath with the small caps
pointing upwards. Using Type S mortar, apply
1⁄2-in.-thick scratch coat to the entire masonry
surface and allow to dry.
METAL PANELS
Follow preparation for metal studs noted above.
SHEATHING
H
WALL
DIMENSIONS
L
Example: If your corner measures 20-ft high, you would
need 20 lineal ft. of corners. If your wall measures 10-ft
by 10-ft., you would typically need 100 sq. ft of flat stones,
but if there are corners, you would actually need less
than 100 sq. ft.). Multiply 20 by 1/2, and your corner lineal
feet converts to 10-sq. ft. Then subtract 10 sq. ft. from
100 sq. ft., and you have 90 sq. ft. This means that 90 sq.
ft. would be the total square feet of flat stones needed.
(Note: The corner lineal footage would not change. Corner
requirements would remain at 20 lineal ft.).
Apply weather-resistive barrier over the sheathing
surface. The weather-resistive barrier should be
equivalent to UBC Standard 14-1, asphalt-saturated
rag, felt, or ASTM D226 (No. 15, Type I Felt). Apply
the barrier so that the upper layer overlaps the
lower by 2 in.
All stone is manufactured in accordance
with ASTM C1670
Standard for Adhered Manufactured
Stone Masonry Veneer
CAUTION
18
DO NOT use muriatic acid. Muriatic acid will
discolor stone veneer and should never be applied.
DO NOT use flat or corner stones on exterior
horizontal planes or cap walls.
Overlap vertical joints by 6 in.
Install lath over the weather-resistive barrier. Use
either 2.5-lb. diamond mesh expanded metal lath,
or IS-gauge woven-wire mesh.
Attach lath using galvanized nails or staples 6 in. on
center vertically, and 16 in. on center horizontally.
Lath must overlap inside and outside corners by 16 in.
Use a Type S mortar to apply a 1⁄2-in.-thick scratch
coat to the entire masonry surface, and allow to set
until dry.
Using Type S mortar, apply a 1⁄2-in.-thick scratch
coat to the entire masonry surface and allow to dry.
STEP 4
Grouting the Stone
Grout as desired with Type N or S mortar mix.
Be certain to fill in any areas where the scratch
coat may be exposed. Strike joint after grout is
fingerprint dry.
Brush away loose mortar.
Note: There are many different techniques and
grout colors available Nitterhouse Masonry
Products recommends consulting with your mason
about the possible colors and grouting techniques
available for use with Handcrafted Veneer Stone.
STEP 3
OTHER USEFUL
INSTALLATION TIPS
Applying the Stone
Out-of-Box Stone Preparation
Apply stone from top down, except for Ledgestone,
which is applied from the bottom up.
Lightly wet the scratch coat and stone veneer.
Install corner stones first, then install flat stones.
Use Type N or S mortar mix, cover the entire back
of the stone with a 1⁄2-in.-thick layer of mortar.
Apply stone to the scratch coat. Then gently place the
stone veneer so that mortar shows around all edges.
Stone installation should be kept 4 in. above grade.
Nitterhouse Masonry Products suggests laying out
24-to-36 sq. ft. of stones selected from different
boxes prior to application to allow for a consistent
blend of colors, shapes, and sizes.
CLEANING
If cleaning is necessary, only clean with a softbristle brush. Begin cleaning stone with water
only. If a stronger cleaning solution is necessary,
use 3⁄4 part white household distilled vinegar
mixed with 5 parts water.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 2 cont.
DRAINAGE
Water run off should be diverted through the use
of gutters, caps, and flashing. Exposure to
consistent water flow could possibly result in
discoloration and/or surface damage.
SEALING
Standard Practice for Installation Methods

SCRATCHBACK
TECHNOLOGY
The advanced scratch-back technology
of Nitterhouse handcrafted veneer
stones not only eases installation,
but enhances adhesion of each stone,
forming a strong, long-lasting bond.
Grooves built into the back of each
handcrafted stone create a stronger
mechanical bond upon installation,
eliminating stone fall-out. Your veneer
stone will look as beautiful years from
now as it does the day its installation
is complete.
