A J&T Special Section P’ZAZZ! February 6-11, 2013 | Page 3 music Local steps into spotlight at ‘Voice’ auditions By DENISE FLEISCHER Lifestyles Editor A television ad and a newspaper clip informed Maine West High School junior Natalie Kozenczak that “The Voice” was holding auditions in Rosemont on Jan. 12-13. Kozenczak was thrilled with the opportunity, and her parents, Joseph and Karen, drove her to the audition at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, wishing her luck. “When I was there, I would estimate about 2,000 people, of what I could see, were there also,” Kozenczak said. “From the moment you go through the first check-in with security, you and your parent, or guardian over the age of 18, are stuck together with invisible handcuffs.” That didn’t bother her because her father was supportive, which she appreciated. They waited four hours. She felt confident and motivated by her Spring programs at Cuneo Northwest Cultural Council Poetry Workshop 'FC2 PM tGSFF Meet Harriet Beecher Stowe 'FC2 PM tJOBEWBODFBUUIFEPPS Natalie Kozenczak before singing with the Yellow River Chorus at Orchestra Hall last fall. father’s comments that “she was great and could do this.” Kozenczak prepared “SummerContinued on page 4 /.JMXBVLFF"WF7FSOPO)JMMTttLUC.edu/cuneo Page 4 | February 6-11, 2013 A J&T Special Section P’ZAZZ! Kozenczak Continued from page 3 time” from Porgie and Bess, which she explains as a classy lullaby from a musical where she could show off her upper vocal range. With its ending note and various places, she could “swing” the notes together. Her second song was “Count On Me” by Bruno Mars, an upbeat pop/alternative piece. “On My Own” from the musical Les Miserables let Kozenczak show off her lower vocal range. When her time to audition came, she sang the first song she prepared for the judges. Of the 10 people auditioning, one made it to the next room. “I thought the audition was good,” Kozenczak said. “When I finished, my dad told me I sounded amazing and the one judge liked me. Unfortunately, I did not get through. I did not mind, though, because I knew it was a good experience and I am excited to try again next year.” She wished the judges offered feedback, but they simply thanked everyone for auditioning. Kozenczak began voice lessons at Maine West High School in Des Plaines her freshman year. She sings all genres of music, but her voice sounds best when the range is higher. “I sound different singing a classical ‘opera’ song like ‘Quella Fiamma,’ which is an Italian ara, compared to a pop song such as ‘Perfect,’ a song made popular by Pink,” Kozenczak said. She participates in Maine West Chorailers and takes vocal and cello lessons at school once a week. Recently, she began attending a nanotechnology class at Oakton Community College in Skokie. In November, she sang with the Yellow River Chorus with her Chinese teacher from Maine South High School at Chicago Symphony Orchestra Hall. As for her goals for the future, she hopes to be accepted to a university and to work hard toward her academic goals. (Journal photos) food starting at $17.99 Spicing things up at Rocky Vanders By TIM O’CONNOR Journal & Topics Reporter 10% OFF Rocky Vanders has spent the past year finding itself. The Prospect Hts. bar and restaurant recently underwent renovations and, in just the past two months, replaced half their staff with a better-trained group of employees, according to General Manager Jarded Gabor. The changes have slowly shifted Rocky Vanders from the typical bar to a nice sports bar and lounge. “They didn’t really have a specific identity before so when you came in here you were confused,” Gabor explained. It’s the latest change for the restaurant that has been growing ever since Peter and wife Susan Sellis opened at Milwaukee Avenue and Palatine Road 21 years ago. It’s grown and grown again over the years, with the original bar’s footprint now taking up less than half their space. “They’re just following in their father’s legacy,” Gabor said of owners George and Jimmy Sellis’ plans to continue expanding and improving Rocky Vanders. The brothers took over when their father, Peter, passed away a year and a half ago. The latest reinvention of the bar creates two identities. The Rocky portion received a facelift last year, and next up is the lounge. Gabor is planning new walls covered with reflective paint to really make the blacklight parties pop, a private bar area and a bar that will straddle the wall between the inside lounge and the adjacent outside patio area, bringing them together. Those upgrades are planned for sometime in the spring. Those physical changes to the building will bring with them changes to the menu. “We’re focusing on small bites, big tastes,” Gabor said. Already they’ve had success with their daily specials, including the $3 half-pound burgers on Mondays and the $5.95 half-slab of BBQ baby back ribs on Tuesdays. The new menu will include items like a Habanero pizza and sliders along with some Rocky Vanders favorites like the saganaki, a flaming Greek cheese appetizer perfect for any grease lover. The restaurant’s wings, made with their own sauce and tangy ranch dressing, will also remain. It’s one of Rocky Vanders most popular items, and the tender meat with a crisp skin makes it obvious why. A J&T Special Section P’ZAZZ! The meat on the chicken kabobs was just as tender and tasty. They had plenty of large morsels of chicken to go along with peppers, packing the wooden stick. The New York Strip steak was another favorite. Mostly made from in-house ingredients, the 14 oz. steak was marinated in a flavorful wine sauce and topped with onions and mushrooms. It had a bit of a pleasing crunch to the outside, but a juicy taste on the inside. The Greek pork chop was another dish inspired by Peter Sellis. The peppers complimented the sauce soaked meat well, creating a moist taste with a bit of a kick. The shrimp arrabbiata was another tender dish, and the accompaning pasta was excellent. The pork tenderloin was good in it’s own right, but the real draw there is the buttermilk mashed potatoes. They were so soft you’d almost want to sleep on them. But letting them melt on your tongue is probably a better choice. If those plates are a sign of the future for Rocky Vanders, it appears the restaurant will be going strong in another 21 years. 95 Three different features daily! Since opening in September, Blackfinn has established itself as a go-to destination for Randhurst Village visitors and area residents. We connected with operating partner Kevin Finegold to see what the restaurant has on the books for 2013. “Most importantly, we are so thankful and appreciative for the support we have received since opening,” said Finegold. “We’re blown away with the community’s positive response, so we’re looking forward to a great 2013. “Following guest feedback, we recently launched a few new initiatives, including a Craft Your Thursday promotion that highlights our beer selection and offers a fun way to experience the great local and regional brews that our area breweries produce. We’re also starting to focus more on weekend live music, and kicked off a Thursday trivia night to offer a great mid-week entertainment option.” Keep up with Kevin and his team at facebook.com/ blackfinnmtprospect. t(3&"513*$&4 t(3&"51"35:1"$,"(&4 t(3&"5"5.04)1&3& t$"5&3*/("7"*-"#-& PRIVATE PARTIES UP TO 100! Grandpa’s FREE POOL We named our little restaurant “Grandpa’s Place” in Glenview not only to honor all our grandpas, but also because the basic decor (especially the back bar which dates back to 1891) suggests the era of their time. Furthermore, we like to think that “grandpa” suggests warmth, character, friendliness and old-fashioned quality. It is our ambition to apply these attributes to “Grandpa’s Place.” Visit us at www.grandpasplace.com.
