Our objectives are manifold, ranging from representing Hong Kong as a goodwill ambassador on the world stage, creating and maintaining an environment conducive to tennis development, regulating and keeping the game on par with international standards, to organising activities and competitions, and nurturing the young and talented in their pursuit of excellence. This year has been a challenging one for the HKTA. Under the leadership and hard work of our Council and committee members, we have successfully adapted to the changes in both the internal and external environment, and achieved our objectives. Coaches Education & Licensing Our Coach Certification Scheme, conducted by experts from the International Tennis Federation (ITF), has been most successful with 63 candidates receiving qualifications out of 176 attendees. Courses covering the Advanced, Developmental and Elementary levels, as well as Mini-Tennis, have been conducted. The HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme aims at protecting the interests of the general public, classifying the capabilities of coaches, and providing windows for coaches to continually upgrade themselves. Since commencement, more than 130 coaches have enrolled in the Scheme and taken part in seminars and workshops organized by the Coaches Development Committee to keep their expertise updated. The Scheme is useful to clubs and organizations in their recruitment of coaches and it also serves as a guideline on coaches’ abilities when students seek for tennis lessons. School Tennis The HKTA has played an active role in the School Sports Programmes (SSP), a sports promotion scheme specifically designed in line with the daily schedule of schools so that students can participate in tennis activities in the school environment 3 HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 • Report from the President • during their leisure time. In the past year, we organized 840 courses for the Easy Sport Programme. Additionally our coaches visited 47 schools and gave 136 training courses for the Outreach Coaching Programme. 357 students participated in our Badge and Certificate Scheme and 26 of them were awarded with the Gold Badges. We have also introduced the Inter-Primary School Tennis Competition in November, a new initiative facilitating earlier migration from mini-tennis to full-scale tennis at the age of 10. It is so encouraging that this first-ever activity has attracted more than 270 students from 59 schools. Community Tennis The Community Sports Club (CSC) Project aims to provide sports development opportunities for young players, enhance the standard of sport at community level and promote lifelong participation in sport. Run in partnership with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the HKTA encourages the formation, operation and expansion of Community Sports Clubs (CSC). 25 CSCs, which come under the umbrella of the HKTA, are spread throughout the eighteen districts in Hong Kong. The HKTA provides assistance to them to expand their memberships and conduct tennis activities such as fun days, training courses and coaching courses. Training for Excellence Having Benny Lin, a former player from Taiwan with a highest ATP ranking in the 200s, as Head Coach, the HKTA invited 4 new coaches to train the Talent Group (TG) this year. Up to now, the Elite Committee has selected 90 young talents, aged 7 – 17, to receive structured intensive training under the TG. These budding talents come from tennis-related sources such as the HKTA Junior Squads, private tennis clubs, and players with outstanding results in tournaments. Members of the group undergo intensive training every week, and are given adequate tournament exposure both locally and overseas. 10 TG members have been invited to join the National Training Squad (NTS) and have the chance to represent Hong Kong in various international events and tournaments. Tennis Centre In pursuance of a dedicated tennis training centre, which will provide specialized facilities for pre-elite training as well as improved environment for the general users, we are pleased to report that significant progress has been made in 2004. We identified the Kowloon Tsai Park as the potential site and submitted a comprehensive HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 4 • Report from the President • proposal to the LCSD for consideration in August. We will continue to work closely with the Government to negotiate and realize the proposal as expeditiously as possible. Officiating To maintain a high standard of officiating and provide training opportunities for the new officials, we organized an Umpires’ Training Course for 43 trainees. More than that, the HKTA encourages local officials to obtain international qualifications and places great emphasis on improving the overall standards of officiating in Hong Kong. In November, we sent two officials to the ITF Level 2 Officiating School in Guangzhou; and more such initiatives will be taken in the future. Membership Service We have enhanced our membership service in different areas. For instance, a number of discounted products and services have been offered as members’ benefits. Also, in our mini library, various tennis-related publications and videos have been provided to the members for reference. We have kept our members’ informed of our activities and the news of the tennis community through the HKTA official website. 5 HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 • Report from the President • Public Relations The HKTA is very honoured to have the continuous support from the local artists: Jacky Cheung, Boy’Z, Yumiko, Alex Fong, and Cookies. Moreover, we are extremely grateful to the many corporations and individuals who have sponsored our tournaments and activities during the year. Without their generous support and crucial contributions, the HKTA would not have been able to bring tennis and tennis-related programmes to such a large section of the local population, benefiting not only the privileged few, but also the general public and the grassroots populace. Looking Ahead I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to our patrons, sponsors as well as the Home Affairs Bureau, the LCSD, the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, and the Hong Kong Tennis Foundation (HKTF). Our achievements this year are a team effort and it is especially important for me to thank all staff and volunteers for their tremendous contribution. My sincerest appreciation must also go to my colleagues of the HKTA Council and members of the respective HKTA Committees who have volunteered not only their valuable time, but have painstakingly turned work plans and ideas into reality. Year 2005 will be the International Year of Sport and Physical Education, the Association looks forward to stronger momentum in the pursuit of our goals in tennis development: widening the base of community participation, strengthening the cooperation with the tennis community in the Mainland, working towards hosting better world-class tennis events, and producing top-notch talents to earn medals and victories for Hong Kong. Honorary Secretary Mr. Kenneth Ng Honorary Treasurer Mr. Jeremy Pong Vice Presidents Mr. Henry Chan Dr. David Ho Mr. Paul Yuen Secretary Bianca Luk Year in Review The Executive Committee has worked hard throughout the year in consolidating the directives of the HKTA Council, and acting on its behalf in between Council meetings. The following are some of its major accomplishments in 2004: The overall budget for the fiscal year 2004/2005 was finalized after due discussions between the Executive Committee and chairs of other HKTA Committees. In the year plan, budgeted activities and expenditures were laid down in detail; financial control has been exercised in a prudent manner accordingly. During the period when the Executive Director’s position has been vacant, the Executive Committee, headed by the HKTA President reviewed, streamlined, and optimized the organization of work in the HKTA office. The framework of the administration has been restructured for better defined roles and responsibilities of departments and staff. Operation of the HKTA is now divided into three main streams: development, tournament, corporate affairs and administration. After the dissolution of the Hong Kong Sports Development Board, we have worked closer with the LCSD. Communication and cooperation are smooth from the management level to the front-line. Heading north, the Committee has taken a step forward to explore the further collaborations with the Chinese Tennis Association. 9 HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 • Executive Committee • We have successfully enriched the local pool of ladies players by bringing in 2 female players from mainland China. Constructive competition between these players and the local talent helps them to improve more quickly and enhance their motivation to win. The HKTA will continue to search for talent abroad to enhance Hong Kong’s chances of earning medals. More players are in the import pipeline to help us achieve our goals. On office automation, the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system is under fine-tuning to best suit HKTA’s workflow. In view of the limited office space and the growing importance of knowledge management, we will establish a document management system which focuses on image capture and indexing. Also in October 2004, we have expanded our TG to the Hong Kong Island side to cater to some of the most promising players living there. Next, we have also set in motion an experimental full-time tennis programme at the Hong Kong Sports Institute that mimics the training methods adopted by some of the best tennis academies in the world. The Committee looks forward to the expansion of this full-time tennis programme and intends to attract some of the best tennis players in the East Asian region to train here, which spurs the blueprint for the Hong Kong National Squad (HKNS) now set in motion, after laying the all-important groundwork in the early part of 2004. A collection of players selected to the TG has been trained fruitfully under the tutelage of HKTA Head Coach, Benny Lin, and assistant coaches, Oliver Stephens, Goran Bosalevski, Mark Elliott, and Miran Pavlek, and this past summer also saw our TG kids revisit the shores of the United States where they embarked on a hugely rewarding, month-long Summer Tour in Southern California. Additional competitive opportunities were also provided in the form of overseas tours such as the NTS/TG Australian Easter Tour, as well as the New Year’s Kaohsiung Tour in Taiwan. 29 HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 • Elite Committee • With the completion of the initial assessment for the HKNS in November 2003, a selected group of talented juniors was handpicked to join the NTS, which seeks to provide the best care and training for these players to progress and flourish. Since the squad is made up of full-time students, in order to balance the high performance training with school commitments, the programme will be tailor-made to cater to the different needs of each player. A prime example is the structuring of the NTS into a school season and a summer season, so that these players can fully excel both academically and on the tennis court. NTS players will be given a multitude of benefits and privileges, such as regular overseas tour and equipment and apparel sponsorships. The coaching team has been strengthened with the hiring of four full-time coaches – Oliver Stephens from Wales (USPTA Pro 1 and High Performance Coach), Mark Elliott from the US (USPTA Pro 1 and former Head Coach of the Chinese National Women’s Team), Goran Bosalevski of Australia (USPTR, former representative of the Macedonia Davis Cup team), and Miran Pavlek (USPTR, former coach at the Nick Bolleteri Tennis Academy). Our coaching team blends together a team of qualified professionals who have extensive experience working with high performance players around the world, which will provide our budding youngsters with a broader learning environment. We will also continue to strive for training excellence by combining intensive training with overseas tournaments and tennis tours, and we optimistically anticipate further progress being made in the coming year. Work is also under way to create a new webpage for the TG, thereby providing a unique avenue to highlight our players’ progress, achievements, and hopefully to bring the players closer to the Hong Kong public in light of all the hard work and dedication the whole TG has put forth. Talent Group The second TG season began in September 2003 and concluded ten months later in June 2004. A total of approximately 50 of Hong Kong’s most promising juniors aged between 7 and 17 were selected after two assessments. Led by a highly qualified team of coaches, which included HKTA Head Coach, Benny Lin; former Hong Kong representative Willy Chan, the TG intensive training programme was thus conducted with vastly promising gusto. Communication channels were kept open with parents; they were regularly informed, both verbally and electronically, on their child’s development. Parents were updated with progress report cards every three months in the form of emails and newsletters; and individual meetings were also set up to ensure that advancement was being efficiently and accurately monitored. In addition, the HKTA is also working towards bringing world-renowned experts and coaches, such as Jacques Hervet and Suresh Menon of the ITF, to Hong Kong to conduct 3 to 5-day clinics specifically for the TG. In view of the achievements on and off the court, it is evident that the TG has achieved enormous success in its first two seasons. Players felt they had benefited from learning skills, their overall performance level had gone up, their confidence was greater; and most importantly, they had fun. It was not a surprise that our TG players have dominated all the local junior competition in 2004 as well as represented Hong Kong well in international competitions. A great many parents were anxious for their children to take part in the 2004-5 season (September 2004 – June 2005) to firmly establish the regular 10-month TG season with our current and new coaches. HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 30 • Elite Committee • Our special thanks go to the Hong Kong Sports Institute for providing the TG with excellent training facilities, the parents for their confidence and trust in us; and of course, the players who have made their coaches, themselves, their parents and Hong Kong, very proud. NTS/TG US Summer Tour 2004 – Southern California 20 of our NTS and TG players embarked on our second annual four-week tour to the city of Los Angeles this summer, playing a total of five tournaments against the best players in the state of Southern California. The standard of the tournaments were all very high, especially those that were part of the US Nike Tour where players ranked in the top-10 in their respective age groups were regular participants. Since all the tournaments were sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), a number of our players have now gained USTA ranking points in their respective age divisions. In particular, our 9-year old Kevin Wong managed to win 4 out of the 5 tournaments he entered and garnered an impressive No.15 ranking in Southern California Boys 10 and Under Singles Division. A general review of the tour indicated that our players have improved consistently and matched up very competitively. The more senior TG players were made captains of the respective age groups and they responded enthusiastically, helping the younger members whenever possible. They ensured that all players were well prepared for their matches, worked hard, yet at the same time, had lots of fun. The whole group was extremely supportive of one another and their behaviour was outstanding. The players have all benefited enormously from the tour as they not only improved their tennis skills and match play fitness, but they have grown into more mature youngsters and have learnt a significant amount from their experiences. The trip has been most invaluable and they deserved the results they achieved. NTS/TG Easter Break Australian Tour 2004 – Melbourne 9 of our NTS and TG players participated in a 2-week tour of Melbourne, Australia during the Easter. They played in 2 of the biggest junior tournaments in Australia, which include the Easter Region and the Frankston Masters Junior Championship. The standard of these two tournaments were very high, yet our players’ performance and attitude were superb with many of them getting into the quarterfinals of these tournaments and with Nicole Tsui and Leung Lok Sze making the finals of these singles events in the Girls 12 and Under Group. Our TG coaches were extremely pleased of this trip in watching how many TG players have grown on and off the court over this 2-week period, and the HKTA now fully believes that there is no substitute of overseas tournaments for our TG players in terms of their tennis development. 31 HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 • Elite Committee • TG Kaohsiung 2004 Over the New Year holidays, our coaches led a group of 15 TG Under-10 and Under-12 players to Kaohsiung, Taiwan, to compete in a number of national singles and doubles tournaments against some of their best counterparts in Taiwan. Our players thoroughly enjoyed this trip as this was the very first time that many of them have played and competed on clay courts. Our TG players arrived one week before the competition and held a weeklong training camp on learning the intricacies of playing on clay. Without any clay courts in Hong Kong, this trip was even more critical to their overall tennis development. After the trip was concluded with many practices and matches under their belt, our TG players have a much better understanding of playing effectively on clay court. It was an extremely rewarding trip for our TG players. The TG is looking forward to revisit Kaohsiung again in the near future. TG Guangzhou Invitational 2004 Friendly matches were arranged with the Tin Ho Tennis School in Guangzhou, which took place in the first week of July. Our coaches led a group of 10 TG Under-10 and Under-12 players to compete in a number of singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches with their mainland counterparts. Our players were thrilled to display their talents in a match-type situation in the beautiful surroundings of the Tin Ho Tennis School and made many new friends. With the improved quality of Chinese players, our players will certainly benefit from having us organize similar trips later. TG Awards Presentation 2004 Following the successful completion of our second TG season in June, the HKTA commemorated the occasion with a celebratory bash at the HKSI on June 26 for all the TG players and their parents, in addition to those personnel who have helped make the TG such a big hit. During the gathering, special awards were presented to a total of nine outstanding players. Both TG members and coaches cast their vote, thus making the award recipients truly worthy winners. The recipients were: Most Most Most Most Valuable Player (MVP) – Improved Player – Dedicated/Hard Working Player – Popular Player – Hong Kong National Squad Ronald Chow, Venise Chan Tyler Leung, Sher Pui Wing Ng Chak Lam, Lorraine Cheung Michael Kwong, Nicole Tsui As reported in 2003, the HKNS will be exclusively for selected, elite juniors, while also embracing elite players being trained at the Hong Kong Sports Institute. Our objective is to nurture potential players into medal-winning candidates at major games and competitions such as the Asian Games or equivalent, not to mention the possibility of the next generation of promising juniors testing the waters on the professional circuit in the not too distant future. All we know is it was started in the early part of last century before World War II. The continuous support of the players and the clubs spurred the growth in league tennis. Last year, more than 150 teams and over 1800 players regularly participated in the Winter League, Summer League, Mixed Double League and Junior Team Tennis. The HKTA is always looking for opportunities to allow more clubs and players to participate in league tennis. Since 2002, the HKTA and the Federation of Community Tennis Clubs (FCTC) have jointly organised the Winter Two-Court League, the aim of which is to introduce league tennis to all residential tennis clubs in Hong Kong. This year, the Winter Two-Court League continuously received 66 team entries, which are not only from FCTC member clubs, but also from HKTA member clubs and 6 residential tennis clubs. While we have successfully expanded league tennis to the residential tennis community, we shall continue with our endeavours to introduce the sport to many more residents in the territory. Working hand in hand with a number of government departments and educational organisations, such as the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the Educational and Manpower Bureau (EMB), the Hong Kong School Sports Federation (HKSSF), and the Association of the Heads of Secondary Schools (HKAHSS), the Development Committee has worked hard in fulfilling its task in broadening the base of tennis participants in the territory. With generous support from Prince Tennis and Hang Seng Bank, we were able to cater specifically to tennis development in schools on a territory-wide basis via the Prince Primary School Promotion Scheme and the Hang Seng Secondary School Programme, thus bringing the game of mini-tennis and tennis to over a hundred primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong. With the setting up of the Community Sports Committee by the government in October 2003, and the subsequent appointment of the HKTA President as one of its key members, we have actively explored channels to promote community participation in 45 HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 • Development Committee • tennis, and ways to foster partnership with different sectors in all eighteen districts for promotion of community sports. In the coming few years, we hope to develop an even closer working relationship with local sports bodies and, in particular, the education sector to promote tennis-related activities and create a sustainable sporting culture in Hong Kong. Schools Tennis Long before the introduction of the School Sports Programme (SSP) by the LCSD and EMB, the HKTA was one of the first National Sports Associations to send coaches to Primary Schools to bring mini-tennis to students aged 6-9. Since 1980, an Annual Championships have been added to the HKTA Mini-Tennis School Programme, enabling schools from all parts of the territory to participate in district-level mini-tennis tournaments. With the introduction of the SSP in 2001, the HKTA, through one of its auxiliary programmes, the Easy Sports Programme, succeeded in utilising district-level Indoor Games Halls to develop mini-tennis in Primary Schools. Running in parallel to the Prince Primary and the Hang Seng Secondary School Programme, the Easy Sports Programme serves to bring affordable mini-tennis to schools. Other factors such as easy accessibility and professionalism demonstrated by our coaches, all contributed to the successful penetration of mini-tennis and tennis in Primary Schools. In a bid to provide recognition and encouragement to children to partake in the sport of mini-tennis, a series of achievement award programmes such as the Badge & Certification Schemes were introduced back in the school year 2002–3. When certain designated tasks are successfully completed, students will be awarded with badges and certificates to recognize their accomplishment and sense of self-achievement. Three levels of badges and certificates - Gold, Silver, and Bronze have been designed, and now over 200 students have been awarded with bronze badges and certificates in 2004. To continue with the good progress we have made beyond mini-tennis, the HKTA sees the introduction of tennis to the Primary 4 to Primary 6 students as a crucial step. A large number of primary schools have signed up for the Outreach Programme under the SSP. In this programme, the HKTA attempts to push for increased commitment to tennis in both primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong. There is again tremendous potential for growth in this area, but easy access to public tennis courts as well as adequate funding to introduce the sport to primary and secondary schools must be readily available for this programme to take off. Thankfully as in the case of mini-tennis under the Easy Sports Programme, the Outreach Programme is priced competitively to promote broad based participation. These affordable programmes seek to provide indispensable tennis training to students and to nurture their interests in the sport. HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 46 • Development Committee • In November 2004, the HKTA began organizing our 1st Annual Inter-Primary School Tennis Competition, consisting of 4 regional competitions and a grand master championship. Although in its very first year, approximately 400 primary school students have already entered into this competition, and we are optimistic that the number of participants will grow further. This is another concrete step we have taken to further popularize the school tennis in the territory. The HKTA envisages substantial upside in tennis participation in primary schools in the coming few years. Mini-Tennis Mini-tennis plays an integral part in our curriculum with regard to junior development, and primary schools represent the perfect backdrop to implement the concept of mini-tennis. In addition to being a challenging recreation for youngsters and beginners, mini-tennis is a good indicator to spotting aptitude for the game and is a useful tool in cultivating children’s interests in tennis. Mini-tennis also offers a unique opportunity to encapsulate the benefits in adopting a healthy, sporting lifestyle other than that of concentrating solely on school work, and generates a valuable prospect where parents can actively involve with their children’s extracurricular activities through sports. Community Tennis To promote the concept of ‘Tennis-For-All’ and to popularise tennis in the community, the HKTA offers regional tennis and mini-tennis training programmes for adults and juniors across the territory. Divided into Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced Levels, these Tennis-For-All training courses and other courses under the Regional Mini-Tennis Training Scheme provide the general public with easy access to structured tennis training at various public tennis centres throughout Hong Kong. Overseen by HKTA-licensed coaches to safeguard coaching quality, courses have been designed to accommodate progression of advanced players as well as those who enjoy the game merely as a recreational activity. In collaboration with the Federation of Community Tennis Clubs (FCTC), the HKTA also stages hundreds of Fun Days and various other training programmes through the network of roughly 25 Community Tennis Clubs. It is our hope that by increasing the opportunities for community tennis to flourish, the overall tennis population may also grow to envelop that of the community and grassroots sections of our society. To encourage teenagers to make better use of their summer vacation, and to expand the exposure of tennis to youngsters, the ever-popular Hong Kong Tennis Stars of the Future Programme once again kicked off in July. First inaugurated with the blessing of Asian-American tennis star, Michael Chang, the programme has for years attracted thousands of newcomers to the game of tennis. In 2004 with general sponsorship from Daikin Air Conditioning Inc., more than 1300 fresh new faces have picked up a tennis racquet for the first time, all of whom will hopefully, in time, learn to appreciate the time-honoured virtues of tennis and come to embrace it as a sport for life. 47 HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 • Development Committee • HKTA Corporate Tennis Training Scheme In addition to providing tennis training programmes at the community level, the HKTA also caters to the corporate sector in Hong Kong. The scheme’s ‘competition mode of learning’ offers tailor-made and budget-priced tennis courses for players of all ability levels taught by HKTA-licensed coaches. Corporations have the option of choosing their preferred time slot and venue, and the scheme’s flexibility and cost effectiveness make it an ideal sporting activity for the hectic lifestyles of today’s business executives. Corporations and other institutions that have signed on with the HKTA Corporate Tennis Training Scheme in 2004 include Amway, Bank of America, Jardine Sports Association, POAD Group Ltd., RCL Display Limited, Trade Development Council, and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Group. HKTA Junior Squad The HKTA Junior Squad has long been the breeding ground for aspiring young tennis talents. It is the HKTA’s vision to build up a broad base of tennis-playing youngsters in Hong Kong. A number of progression paths such as the Daikin Tennis Stars of the Future, LCSD’s Outreach Coaching Programme for Primary and Secondary Schools, the Tennis-For-All Training Scheme, and district level training programmes launched by the FCTC, have been provided and those showing promise will be invited to undergo further training under HKTA Squad. In 2004, approximately 260 teenagers have been training under the HKTA Junior Squads. Besides on-court tuition from HKTA-licensed coaches, squad members are frequently invited to attend seminars and forums of varying topics organised by the HKTA. With the formation of the HKTA Talent Group in January 2003, the role of the HKTA Junior Squad has now expanded to become one of the major channels through which budding talents are selected to join the HKTA Talent Group for more intensified training. Specifically, we have organized a whole range of coaching courses from the mini-tennis level to the advanced tennis level, catering to the needs and the different levels of current and future coaches in the territory. ITF-endorsed HKTA Coach Certification Scheme Revamping has never been an easy task. The HKTA took a bold step in collaborating with the governing body of world tennis, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), to formulate the ITF-endorsed HKTA Coach Certification Scheme in late 2002, thereby modernising its coaches training and certification with the backing of the leading authority in tennis. Since then, the HKTA has succeeded in conducting 5 Mini-Tennis Instructor Courses, 7 Elementary Coach Courses, 6 Development Coach Courses, and 1 Advanced Coach Course. ITF Programme Expert, Mr. Jacques Hervet of France, as well as Ricky Chan, our local tutor, have taken a major part in our revamp process, contributing hugely to the programme design and implementation. In February 2004, the HKTA has successfully completed its first ITF-endorsed HKTA Advanced Level Coach Course, which featured 12 of our top local coaches such as HKTA Head Coach Benny Lin, HKTA Tennis Centre Director at Victoria Park Cyril Lau, and Jason Sankey. In 2005 and beyond, the HKTA anticipates conducting additional courses to the HKTA Coach Certification Scheme to expand and strengthen the quality of coaches in the territory. HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 52 • Education & Qualifications Committee • HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme To meet the market demand for standardization and recognition towards coaches’ qualification, the HKTA has implemented the Coach Licensing Scheme in April 2003. Initiated by the Education and Qualifications Committee, the HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme serves to provide quality benchmark to assess the overall standard of coaches, and a learning window for them to keep abreast of the latest coaching know-how and technology in the game of tennis through continuing education. The four-level licensing scheme comprises Advanced Level (CL-3), Development Level (CL-2) and Elementary Level (CL-1), as well as Mini-Tennis Instructor Level (MT-1), providing different levels and paths for progression. Since the implementation of the scheme, it has been widely supported by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and member clubs of the HKTA. All coaches employed by the HKTA to coach in its training courses must hold valid HKTA licences. As at November 2004, the HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme consisted of over 130 coaches in the territory, and we anticipate enrolment under this scheme to further increase in the coming few years. HKTA Education Initiatives In 2004, the HKTA has been relentless in his effort to assist its older elite players to secure tennis scholarships for universities in the United States. In addition, we have explored other educational options for our younger players who often have to balance the rigors of tennis training along with the rigidity of a more traditional schooling system in Hong Kong. Specifically, we have entered into a strategic partnership with the University of Miami Online School to facilitate the provision of online education to three of our best junior players. Now having gained greater educational flexibility, these players can adopt a full-time training schedule as well as travel more frequently to participate in overseas tournaments, including all the ITF junior major events. In the coming year, the HKTA will also focus on liaising with secondary schools here in Hong Kong as well as local tertiary institutions for providing additional assistance to our athletes who often have to miss school time because of travelling and playing in overseas tournaments. Lastly, the HKTA will liaise with other national sports associations to petition to the Education and Manpower Bureau for adopting more athlete-friendly sports polices in line with other countries such as Korea and Taiwan. 53 HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 • Education & Qualifications Committee • Terms of Reference i. Over the twelve months, we have been assiduous in planning and implementing a demanding agenda of coaches’ workshops and clinics, as well as educational forums and seminars, so as to expand the opportunities through which our coaches can further enhance their know-how, and furnish them with the proficiency to stay at the forefront of the coaching industry. Highlights this year include a coaching workshop by renowned ITF expert coach, Jacques Hervet of France; a special clinic by HKTA Head Coach Benny Lin on the topic entitled Talent Group – Go Behind the Scenes; a fall coaching clinic by our new Talent Group coach Oliver Stephens, USTA High Performance Coach, on the key factors of developing junior tennis players; an educational workshop on the introduction of the International Tennis Number by ITF expert coach, Brenden Sharp of Australia; and forums doping control and first aid forums by acclaimed physician, Dr. Yvonne Yuan, and the 55 HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 • Coaches Development Committee • Auxiliary Medical Service. The overall response from the local coaching ranks and other HKTA members have been extremely positive and we will strive to bring to our coaches an even more select schedule of events in the future. With the Tennis Association’s endorsement, we have also nominated coaching representatives to attend ITF Coaches’ Workshops abroad this year, such as the Olympic Solidarity (OS) Regional Level II Coaches’ Course in Kuala Lumpur, organised by the Malaysian Tennis Association (PELTI) and the ITF in August, and the ITF Asian Coaches’ Workshop in New Delhi, India, in October. Speakers at these high-level workshops include some of the world’s top coaches, technical directors, as well as international experts in various areas of tennis sport science. In 2004, we have also moved to the final phase of our Committee’s proposed electronic Coaches’ Registry. The importance of the registry cannot be underestimated. It serves a multitude of purposes as it is not only a unique way of introducing our coaches to the public, but the tennis playing population will be better informed when choosing tennis coaches, and learning from qualified professionals will equip end users with sounder fundamentals, ultimately enhancing the overall playing standard in Hong Kong in the long run. In the coming year, we will continue to reinforce the HKTA Coaches’ Library by accumulating essential publications and videotapes to ensure better access to quality information for our coaches. We will seek to bring renowned professionals to Hong Kong more frequently to increase our coaches’ training opportunities, and assist in their efforts to acquire higher-level coaching qualifications. It is our intention to make full use of the newly created electronic Coaches’ Registry to heighten our coaches’ profile in the public’s eyes, and to educate end users of the advantages of learning from qualified coaches, and to secure better benefits for our group of coaches. Workshops & Clinics In February and March, we invited Mr. Jacquet Hervet, ITF’s expert coach and former ITF Team Coach, to host a series of workshops here at the Hong Kong Sports Institute. Major topics of discussion include the design of on-court drills as well as fitness program for players, periodization schedule for tournament players, proper use of equipment aids in tennis training. Furthermore in June, we were able to offer our coaches a special clinic on the design of an effective small group lesson conducted by HKTA Head Coach, Benny Lin, who demonstrated the ingredients that went into a typical Talent Group lesson. In October, an education workshop was conducted at the Hong Kong Sports Institute on the introduction of the International Tennis Number – On Court Assessment (ITN) by ITF expert coach, Brenden Sharp. The ITN is a new initiative adopted by the ITF to roll out its plan of worldwide implementation of an on-court assessment system to categorize the ability of players all the way from beginners to professional tennis players. Ultimately, the ITF believes national tennis associations would benefit tremendously by organizing tournaments among players who have received similar ITN scores. During the workshop, coaches were educated on the setup and design of the scoring system, and some of them have managed to get ITN themselves by the end of the session! HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 56 • Coaches Development Committee • With greater familiarity of the ITN scoring system among our coaches and the tennis public, graded tournaments for individual singles and doubles events in Hong Kong similar to the HKTA Summer and Winter Leagues for team events may not be too far away. Forums & Seminars Continuing with last year’s well-received series of sports science and educational seminars, we were thrilled to have a highly respected professional in her field, Dr. Yvonne Yuen, Sports Science Department, Hong Kong Sports Institute, who shared with us her expert views in Forum on Doping Control for Coaches; while officers from the Auxiliary Medical Service, endowed us with the knowledge of handling episodes of heat exhaustion and injuries to bones and joints. In addition, our Committee member, Mr. Ricky Chan, was kind enough to conduct a preview of the theory and practical aspects of a typical ITF Coaching Course, which was informative and interesting to our coaches. Online Coaches’ Registry At present, we are at the final testing stage of our electronic Coaches’ Registry. It will act as a valuable avenue through which we can raise the profile of our team of HKTA-certified coaches, increase the option and choices of qualified coaches for the general public, and thereby playing an important role in realizing the Tennis Association’s goal of enhancing the general playing standard in the territory. Coaches’ Library A library of video tapes, reference material, and useful publications by renowned industry leaders and authors has been set up to facilitate the continuing education and bolstering of knowledge base for our coaches. We will keep adding resources to the library to ensure our coaches have access to the most up-to-date information available. 57 HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 • Coaches Development Committee • HKTA Licensed Coaches (as at November 2004) Mini-Tennis Instructors (MTL) 8 Level I (CL1) 92 Level II (CL2) 32 Level III (CL3) 6 Mini-Tennis Instructors Level 1 Coaches Chan Po Chu Chung Wing Wah Ho Luen Ching Lau Chi Cheong Lee Shuk Yin Tsui Kwok Chung Yim Yee Li, Elaine Yip Ting Hang Au Ka Man Chan Fung Ping Chan Kwok Biu Chan Lai Si, Teresa Chan Shek Kwong Chan Sze Chung Chan Yiu Ming Chan Yiu Wai Chau Man Leung Cheng Chi Lap Cheung Hok Ming, Eric Cheung Kam Hung, Stephen Cheung Leung Kam, Eric Cheung Man Fai Cheung Wai Leung Cheung Wai Ming, Dick Chiang Wing ON Chin Kin Ching Chiu Mei Yue Choi Chi Keung Choi Wing Kam Chow Bik Chuen Chow Muk Shing Chow Sik Mei Fong Wai Kwan Connie Fu Kwok, Fred Fung Po Keung, Joseph Ho Ming Sun Ho Yiu Fai Hui Hong Man Hui Kin Wai Hui Lung Fai, James Hui Wai On Ko Tai May Chu Kong Kwok Keung, George Kong Yuet Ming Kwok Sau Kuen Kwong, Walter Lai Chi Kin Lai Mei Yuk Lam Ka Chun, Pato Lam Sin Wai, Larry Lam Siu Wai Lam Wai Kit, Angus Lam Ying Kit, Ringo Lau Fuk Wah, Victor Lau Kwong Kin Lau Yu Sun, Sunny Lee Kwok Keung Lee Sai Kwong, Andy Lee Sau Wah HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 Level 2 Coaches 58 Lee Yat Yu Leung Nai Wah Leung Ngai Ming Leung Wai Cheong Li Pui Ling Lin Chi Wai Lin Chong Fung Lo Hon Tim, Joannes Lo Lam Lo Pang Kueng Lung Chun Cheung Lung Kai Cheung, Vincent Ma King Tang Mo King Ng Chi Kwong Ng Chor Keung Ng Lup Fung, Mark Ng Wing Kwok Or Wai Chuen Pun Shiu Ming Sham Kwok Hing Shum, John Sum Tat Shun Szeto Choi Ying To Kam Fong Tsang Kei Shun Tse Hui Kwong Tsoi Kin Hung, Rico Tung Man Ho, Albert Wong Pak Wing Wong Tak, Oct Wong Tat Hang, Michael Wong Tsan Sang, Johnson Wong Yau Sing, Star Wong Yik Sing Wong Ying Wai Wong Shu Hung Wong Wing Kai Woo Man Yiu Yung Man Lok, Freeman Au Ka Shun, Michael Chan Wai Kai Cheung Chung Fai, Rikko Cheung Wai Ping, Betty Gordon, George Richard Han, Jack Ho Kam Hei Hung Chuen Shu, Paul Hunt, Christopher Ip Wing Ching, Sunny Lai Kwai Cheong Lee Chi Fai Lee Pak Yiu, Paddy Leung Yan Man Leung Yuk Bing Ling, Derek Liu Chi Ming Lo Kam Sheung Lum Wai Man Man Kwok Fai Mar Chiu Ming, Curtis Ng, Kenneth Ng, Kin Shing Poon Tat Lun, Alan Shea Pui Tak Tang Chi Ming Tang Kwok Chi Wong Ka Sing Wong Shing Wai, Bruce Wong Sui Hung Wu Yuk Kuen Yan Kwok Ming Level 3 Coaches Chan Chi Shing, Ricky Chung Wa Ming Cyril Lau Lin Bing-Chao, Benny Leslie Poon Sher Pui Cheong Stan Tamura • Coaches Development Committee • Terms of Reference i. Umpires’ Training Course We have also offered an entry-level Umpires’ Training Course, held at the Sports Institute in January this year, for the potential new recruits who may join the officiating ranks. 43 trainees have successfully attained 100% attendance record and 20 of them have chaired a number of matches in tournaments. Upon completion of the minimum 20-hour attachment work and subject to satisfactory evaluation of their on-court performance, they will be recommended to become HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 60 • Officiating Committee • Level 1 officials. FCTC Umpires’ Training Course In addition, the Federation of Community Tennis Clubs (FCTC) and the Officiating Committee have co-organized an FCTC Umpires’ Training Course; creating more avenues for people to gain a foothold in the officiating field. ITF Officiating Training With sufficient commitment, potential to progress, good knowledge and experience; two of our officials, Frankie Chan and Simon Ko, were selected to attend an ITF Level 2 Officiating School in Guangzhou, China. We had studied various venues made available to us for consideration from the LCSD, including Ma Tau Wai and Ho Man Tin Service Reservoir sites. Late in August, having carefully reviewed the availability and suitability of the existing facilities at Kowloon Tsai Park Tennis Centre, we formally submitted a very comprehensive proposal for a tennis training centre to the LCSD for consideration, outlining in details of our approach, our strategy for developing the centre, our management, marketing, operational and financial plans. If successful, the said existing centre which consists of 8 tennis courts all fitted with floodlights, 2 1/2 size practice courts and a number of single storey buildings/ structures and a couple of squash court buildings, will be enhanced and modified into our own dedicated tennis training centre. We are expecting a reply from the LCSD about our proposal in due course. 69 HONG KONG TENNIS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2004 • Tennis Centre Special Committee • Proposed HKTA Tennis Centre at Kowloon Tsai Park Existing Facilities to be Enhanced (Area in Metres) • 8 nos.
