IN THE NEWS Ferrari 268 SP With Excellent American Racing Heritage Offered At RM Sotheby's Monterey Auction Next Month This 1962 Ferrari 268 SP, chassis no. 0798, served as a factory development car, but at Le Mans in 1962 its gearbox failed, with Giancarlo Baghetti and Ludovico Scarfiotti sharing driver duties. After Le Mans 1962, chassis no. 0798 was sold to Luigi Chinetti, principal of North American Racing Team (NART), who campaigned it from late 1962 through 1963, at Bahamas Speed Week and Sebring, where it never placed well. The car flowered in 1964 in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) competition on the East Coast, piloted by Tom O’Brien, who claimed the national championship in D-Modified. A friend who raced against this very same car that season remembers it as “powerful and good handling.” Our friend was in a smaller displacement class, but at one of America’s most storied sports car tracks, he put in one of his best drives ever, setting a class lap record trying to chase down chassis no. 0798. A competitive package, as one would expect from Ferrari. Chassis no. 0798 is the third of six 268 SP examples originally produced, of which only five remain, and it’s one of only two originally fitted with the 2.6-liter 90-degree V8 with four twin-choke Weber carburetors. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] June 24thh, 2016 In 1969 chassis no. 0798 landed in Pierre Bardinon’s Mas du Clos collection, where it remained for 27 years. For nearly two decades, the current owner has displayed the car at major events, including the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Ferrari Days at Spa-Francorchamps, the Cavallino Classic and the Ferrari 60th Anniversary Concours. To say the least, 0798 is one of the prettiest Ferrari sports-racing cars of the 1960s, part of the transition to mid-rearengine design. An exceptional matching-numbers car, it comes to auction next month with Ferrari Classiche certification. Not just an investment piece, this is a car to be driven and enjoyed. There’s not a vintage racing event that would turn it down. (Mark Ewing) Ferrari LaFerrari Spider The first images of the Ferrari LaFerrari Spider have been revealed ahead of its global debut at the Paris Motor Show 2016 in September. Ferrari defines it as a supercar for those who thrive in the joy of “al fresco” – Italian for “in the open air”. The official name, price and the number of units of the Ferrari LaFerrari Spider will be revealed at the Paris Motor Show too. That said, chances are the name “Spider” will not be used on this open-top LaFerrari, especially given that the name has mainly been used on fully convertible models in the past. We could see a special name come Paris as seen with past open-top Ferrari limited edition models, 599 SA and the likes. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] June 24thh, 2016 The order book for the new open-top LaFerrari has also been closed, following a private viewing a few months ago. The LaFerrari Spider will come in two options – a removable soft top and a removable carbon fiber hard top. Pricing should be higher on the carbon fiber option. The performance figures are similar to those of the Coupe, a V12 engine mated to a 120kW motor for a total output of 949 hp. Thorough modifications were done to the chassis in order to retain the same torsional rigidity and beam stiffness as the coupe. Additionally, the aerodynamics were tweaked in order to maintain the same drag coefficient under all driving situations. (Earl Karanja) Ferrari to Create 350 Special Edition Cars for 70th Anniversary Ferrari has officially announced plans to produce 350 special edition cars in celebration of their 70th anniversary. The announcement of the 350 special models was made privately to a selection of 100 Ferrari owners during the Ferrari Cavalcade in Venice, Italy last weekend. The 350 models will be spread out over the current 5-model Ferrari line-up. Each model will take special inspiration from a selection of 70 of Ferrari’s most iconic cars from the last 70 years. According to Ferrari marketing and commercial boss Enrico Galliera, “This means we are going to be producing and delivering 350 unique pieces. Every single car will be unique.” If Ferrari chooses to spread out the editions evenly, this means that there will be 70 special versions of each current Ferrari model – the California T convertible, the 488 Spider, the 488GTB coupe, the F12berlinetta coupe and the GTC4Lusso. “The whole team at Maranello went back through the 70-year history of the company and tried to identify the most iconic cars of the past in the history of the company, the most iconic exteriors, the most iconic interiors.” Galliera confirmed. The problem starts when sports car companies try to get into the SUV game. The inherent properties of an off-road capable machine usually means that any semblance of athleticism in the new off-roader is lost. Stubborn engineers don’t like this, so it means that extra time is spent at the drawing board until the finished product comes out just right. Here we see the Maserati Levante, one such example of all that hard work, being taken through the paces by the automaker’s head of product development. Being a Maserati, things don’t stay tame. Check out the video to see what we mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88ecCaah3Do For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] June 24thh, 2016 Google VP Benjamin Treynor Sloss Gets His Stunning Yellow-Blue Ferrari F12 TdF Sure, they work hard to sustain their play-hard time behind the wheel, but we're not here to discuss that. Instead, we're talking about the car-related part of such a driver's off-the-track life. We're talking about Google VP Benjamin Treynor Sloss. You know, the gentleman who lets his wife lap the track in an FXX K, while he uses the senior 599XX. Well, the man has recently taken delivery of his Ferrari F12 Tour de France. With Maranello's Tailor Made specialists doing their best to help the man spec his F12 TdF, the result is a stunning Yellow machine that comes with Blue stripes. The cabin mirrors the hue combination mentioned above, while also adding Gray to the melange. But let's see what he had to say about the octane behemoth: "I'm at a loss for words. Ferrari Tailor Made worked with us to design her, and she's even more beautiful than I could have hoped. And driving... LaFerrari V12 howl, balanced handling, and supple ride. Amazing. The TDF is instantly my new favorite GT car," As some of you have noticed, when it comes to special cars such as the-the Prancing Horse's latest Grand Tourer, spec’ing these vehicle has become a bit of a game and social media plays the jury role. And with only 799 units of the Italian GT being brought to the world, this is quite an exclusive game. And while some of its players go for restrained approaches, with Hugh Grant's F12 TdF being an example as good as any, others chose wild approaches that scream out the Fezza's motorsport DNA. The system was tested by Sebastian Vettel during one of the practice sessions. Compared to the original Halo tested by Ferrari in March, the updated design features a more streamlined shape and is also said to be lighter. The Halo, which consists of a stiff, tubular structure housed over the driver’s head, is one of the various systems up for consideration by F1 organizers to help improve the safety of the sport. Because of the proximity of the central strut to the driver’s head, the safety device has little effect on visibility. Red Bull Racing has its own solution called the Aeroscreen, which the team recently demonstrated deflecting various high-speed projectiles. Another, less popular solution being looked at is a jet fighter-style canopy that would completely enclose the driver’s head. Organizers hope to introduce one of the solutions soon, possibly as early as next season. Our pal Jason Fenske at Engineering Explained addresses one of the most commonly-asked questions about car maintenance: should you use synthetic motor oil or conventional motor oil in your car? The safe answer, of course, is to read your car's owner's manual and follow the automaker's directions. However, as Jason explains, there's more to it than just picking a fancy oil for a car. In this brief film, he takes a look at two Pennzoil motor oils—one formulated specifically for vehicles with high mileage and another billed as a flagship synthetic. At the Canadian Grand Prix this year, Jason had the opportunity to sit down with some of Pennzoil's engineers to learn just what it is that one of the world's largest petroleum products manufacturers recommends for every vehicle. He clarifies quickly just what an oil's viscosity rating means and how that applies to your vehicle, and then he tells us about the differences between conventional and synthetic oils. The video, like all of those in his Engineering Explained series, is easy to follow and informative. It's definitely worth a watch before you do your next oil change, so you may want to grab a pen and a pad of paper to take some notes! When the team at Ferrari designed the F50, their list of priorities did not include any such luxuries. All they wanted was a car that was faster than the mighty F40, using a naturally-aspirated V12 instead of a twin-turbo V8. Ferrari's official production figure for the F50 is 349 units, which makes it by far the rarest of the marque's halo cars. Eight of those were supposed to go straight to the Sultan of Brunei, who asked Pininfarina to convert at least five of them to right-hand drive behind closed doors. That makes those right-drive F50s some of the rarest cars in the world. But racing driver and 2010 LMP2 Le Mans champion Nick Leventis' current daily driver is even more special, since only four F50s left the factory sporting an "Argento Nurburgring" paint job—otherwise known as silver. When you have a $1.6 million two-seater with an engine that will rev to 9500 (or more, if you aren't concerned about your valves), second gear is as fast as you want to go with the roof on. Apparently, it has a tendency to fly off above 60mph. . . No GPS, no traction control, just a gated manual and all the fantastic noise a Ferrari V12 can provide. Being a lefthand drive car in the UK, you can't see much, and the roads there are tight as well, but who cares? It's an F50! It was Ferrari's first frontengined, V12 grand tourer since the 365 GTB/4 Datyona, and made its mark as a great driver's car from Ferrari. This one is being offered for sale through Silverstone Auctions at their Classic Sale 2016. It's expected to rake in $158,000198,000 when the hammer comes down. The 550 was first introduced at the Nürburgring in 1996, and was produced for six years alongside cars such as the F355 and F50. This particular example has covered 36,600 miles—quite a bit for a collector's Ferrari. The car's only previous owner, Sir Geoff Hurst, is a famous English soccer player who scored a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup Finals to take the championship. Since the car is from the United Kingdom, the steering wheel is on the right side of the car. It's finished in a silver called 'Argento Nurburgring,' with a black leather interior. It also has Daytona style seats, and a full carbon fiber interior trim. The most important feature inside the car, the six-speed gated manual transmission, is also present. The 550 Maranello was offered exclusively with the stick-shift throughout its production life. It was only after Ferrari updated the car to 575M-spec did they offer an F1-style automatic gearbox. The Silverstone Classic Sale kicks off at the end of this month, so don't miss it. And of course, they're subjected to coffee, food spills, dirty hands, and oils from our skin, but are rarely clean. So, it might be time to refresh those belts. Find out how on this episode of Details. My name is Larry Kosilla and I'm a professional detailer. Together with Autoblog, we're creating the ultimate collection of quick car care videos. Here are the items you'll need for this task. So, the first step is to open the door and gently pull the seat belt most of the way out of the retractor. Use a clamp to prevent the belt from retracting back into the spool while you're working on it. Next, lightly spray fabric cleaner on the fibers and scrub with a medium to stiff bristle brush. Scrub in the direction of the fibers, and avoid circles, or rubbing up and down. Over time and with excess pressure, the webbing may begin to degrade or fray with abuse. If the stain persists, dilute all-purpose cleaner, three to one, in a small cup of warm water. Dunk the brush into the cup and scrub the area. Use the minimum amount of cleaner and liquid necessary to remove the stain, and to avoid over-soaking or spreading the discoloration. For belts with strong odors, add one tablespoon of dish soap and two tablespoons of vinegar to one cup of warm water. Then gently scrub the webbing. Vinegar is great at killing smells, and is a natural antibacterial agent to minimize future mold issues. If you access to a steam machine, spray fabric cleaner on the belt and blast the webbing with pressurized steam to blow dirt away and kill germs. Steam is also helpful at minimizing the amount of moisture used and subsequently, the time required to dry. Lastly, dry with a cloth towel by squeezing the belt between your hands, and running up and down the fibers. Then leave the belt extended overnight to dry. If the belt is retracted and retains moisture, mold and bacteria will grow within the spool, so give it enough time to air out thoroughly. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] June 24thh, 2016 Although most seat belts are made from only 300 polyester woven fibers, they can hold the weight of approximately three tons which is crazy. So, making sure this vital and sometimes overlooked device is cleaned properly is extremely important. For more how-to car care videos, visit autoblog.com/details. I'm Larry Kosilla from ammonyc.com. We'll have classics, members of the mighty Letter Car series and muscle cars on the show field, as For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] June 24thh, 2016 well as a jaw-dropping assortment of classic autos that span the years. We hope you'll join us marveling at each and every car parked on the beautiful Bluegrass lawn at Keeneland. I hope you share in our sincere gratitude to the car owners and entrants who invest their precious time and autos, traveling many miles to participate in the Keeneland Concours. It's no small undertaking to prepare a Concours automobile for judging, and we are truly grateful that you have chosen the Keeneland Concours to display your automotive pride and joy. We would also like to thank Keeneland for the many ways it has supported the Keeneland Concours these past 13 years. The opportunity to display these iconic automobiles in a setting befitting a “winning tradition” plays an important role in distinguishing our Concours from all the others—thank you! Thanks also to the many sponsors, some who have been with us from the beginning, and others who have recently joined our family. Some of our long-term sponsors include Audi, James Motor Company, Wells Fargo, Maserati of Cincinnati, UK Federal Credit Union, Bluegrass Motorsport in Louisville and our media sponsors, WKYT-TV & WEKU. Without your support, we would not be able to continue our journey. There are so many elements that go into planning a first-class Concours venue each year. It takes months of time and effort from the committee members and judges. It takes the willingness of car owners to bring their one-of-a-kind automobiles to Lexington, the support from our generous sponsors, volunteers, professional vendors, renowned artists, and car clubs. All of you make the Keeneland Concours possible. We'll have our usual collection of exquisite automobiles, spanning the earliest years of the motorcar to the future classics of today. From European beauties to burly American Iron, there's something for every car lover. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] June 24thh, 2016 The Concours festivities also include the Hangar Bash, Bourbon Tour, Tour d'Elegance and a full weekend of fun. Don't miss favorites like the Automotive Artists and the Silent Auction. Click on the "Event Schedule" link to see all the events. We'll also have the popular Porsche Boxster Raffle, for a 2016 Porsche Boxster in Rhodium Silver, 19inch wheels and the famous Porsche 6-cylinder mid-engine layout. Tickets are $100 available on the website or at the show. You could be a lucky winner this year! Of course, all of this effort is simply our way of supporting the good work of Kentucky Children's Hospital. Proceeds from every aspect of the Keeneland Concours d'Elegance go to support significant projects of the Hospital's critical mission to improve healthcare for the children of Kentucky. The past several years we have been proud to support the Hospital's growth in infant simulators to better train physicians and nurses. Fortunately, it looks like El Nino will be our friend this year, with early forecasts suggesting a warm and dry July after a wacky winter season.
