This VIIth edition of the Summit will once again feature well-known experts in their field who will lead various training sessions, conferences and seminars on topics important to Karate in Canada. Sincerely, Craig Vokey President 2 KARATE CANADA ANNUAL SUMMIT TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL Additionally, among the many other great sessions featured in this year’s program, we are happy to announce that our Officials Committee Chair and WKF Kata and Kumite Referee A Mr. Yaro Tarana will lead a National Referee Clinic as well as hold officials’ evaluations and upgrades. Also, Karate Canada’s High Performance & Coaching Committee Chair and renown HP expert Mr. Peter G. Davis will lead a presentation and discussion of Karate Canada’s new High Performance Plan. Our NCCP Committee Chair, Mr. Gérard Lauzière, will lead the delivery of an NCCP Comp-Dev module, as part of the requirements of all Coaches seeking Comp Dev level training and certification. Another great addition to the event’s program will, this year, consist in a Concussion Awareness and Management Workshop, led by our Medical Committee Chair and certified Athletic Therapist Mr. C. Gus Kandilas, a must of all karate coaches and instructors! Furthermore, our 3 National Team Head Coaches will conduct educational sessions on their respective National Team programs, including practical / technical workshops for Coaches of National Team Roster athletes and PTSO Coaches (details and schedule to be released soon, in a 2nd version of this bulletin). Karate Canada will also continue to offer National Dan Testing opportunities in the context of this great yearly event, and will also continue to hold morning meetings where PTSO Leaders and administrators can engage in constructive dialogue with Karate Canada’s Board members and staff on a variety of key issues. Additionally, some KC-PTSO meetings focusing on updating our Strategic Plan (with Tokyo 2020 on the horizon) and on improved alignment of governance and programs will be held and co-facilitated by renown Sport Governance & Management Expert Mr. Benoit Girardin (LBB Consultants inc.). Please note that 3 NCCP Professional Points (PD) will be allotted to all coaches for participating in the Summit. Once again, Karate Canada is also pleased to offer AWAD / Para- specific kata training sessions, co-led by our AWAD / Para National Team Head Coach Mrs. Heather Fidyk and by our National Team Kata Head Coach Mrs. Katarina Vadovicova, in conjunction with our elite kata seminar. So once again, Karate Canada is very pleased to confirm that it will offer a wide array of highly useful workshops and conferences, as well as training and development sessions for Canadian athletes, instructors, leaders, volunteers, coaches, and officials alike, over the course of this 3-day event. OLYMPIC OUTREACH: WE ARE ALL KARATE! On the heels of the recent announcement by the International Olympic Committee that the sport of karate will be featured in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games’ program, Karate Canada is pleased to announce that this year’s edition of the Summit will, for the most part, be open to all karateka, and we warmly welcome all Canadian karate enthusiasts, athletes, coaches and instructors from any organization to join us for this great event. OPEN HOUSE SESSION – SATURDAY OCTOBER 1st Karate Canada will also gladly welcome (non-registered) visitors to the event as part of a 90-minute “Open House” portion, on the afternoon of Saturday, October 1st (exact times to be confirmed). Please contact our Event Manager Mrs. Cheryl Tataryn for more details and / or to confirm your intent to come and visit us: [email protected] . 3 1- THE PROGRAM 1.1- PRACTICAL SEMINARS AND TRAINING SESSIONS FOR ATHLETES A. “ELITE COMPETITION KUMITE TACTICS & TRAINING” With Guest Star Instructor Mr. DAVIDE BENETELLO and with Karate Canada’s National Team Kumite Head Coaches, Mrs. Nassim Varasteh and Mr. Denis Beaudoin: Mr. DAVIDE BENETELLO M. Benetello, who represented the colors of the Italy, is one of the world’ most decorated karate competitors, having won gold at the 1994 World Championships, silver at the 2000 World Championships, and bronze medals at both the 1998 and 2004 World Championships. Additionally, Mr. Benetello is a 4-time European Champion, has also won 3 silver medals and 3 bronze medals at European Karate Championships, and won a silver medal at the World Games in 1997. Since his retirement from competition, Mr. Benetello has built a considerable reputation as an expert kumite coach and instructor, having worked as the Head Coach of the Junior Italian National Team from 2012 to 2014, having collaborations with National Teams from Romania, Bulgaria, Israel and Georgia, and having led or co-led International Seminars in over 40 countries. Mr. Benetello is also quite actively involved in the sport of karate’s technical leadership and administration, as Chairman of the WKF Athletes Commission, as a member of the WKF Sport Commission / Kumite Rules Commission / Entourage Commission, as a member of the WKF Tokyo 2020 Planning Commission, and as a member of WKF Executive Board. We’re very thrilled to greet Mr. Benetello at the 2016 Summit, as he’ll be leading his first-ever kumite seminar on Canadian soil. Mrs. NASSIM VARASTEH REYHANIAN To this day, Mrs. Varasteh is the most successful Canadian karate athlete in history, with 2 silver medals at the WKF World Karate Championships and no less than 6 gold medals at the Pan American level. Since dedicating herself mostly to coaching, Nassim has a strong record of success as well, with many athletes who have won medals at the Pan American and international levels. As a Kumite National Team Head Coach since 2013, Nassim has successfully provided leadership and support to our Senior National Team on a number of occasions over the last years, including at the recent Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games, where Canada claimed a record number of medals and achieved its best-ever performance. 4 1- THE PROGRAM 1.1- PRACTICAL SEMINARS AND TRAINING SESSIONS FOR ATHLETES A. “ELITE COMPETITION KUMITE TACTICS & TRAINING” ...Continued ...Continued With Guest Star Instructor Mr. DAVIDE BENETELLO and with Karate Canada’s National Team Kumite Head Coaches, Mrs. Nassim Varasteh and Mr. Denis Beaudoin: Mr. DENIS BEAUDOIN Also a Kumite National Team Head Coach, Mr. Beaudoin has a rich history as an elite coach having trained several athletes who medaled at the World level and at the Pan American Games. Denis is a Physical Education graduate and was a PE teacher for several years, also holds a 7th degree black belt from the Japan Shotokan Karate Federation. He devotes his time exclusively to his coaching duties at his club (where he manages a recognized “Sport-Études” program) as well as at the national and international levels. Mr. Beaudoin was himself once a member of the National Team, and took part in 2 WKF World Karate Championships. Over the course of the Summit, these 3 highly seasoned kumite coaches and experts will share with you valuable lessons learned during recent international competitions, as well as the secrets to success on the international stage. Provincial, national and international-level athletes will not want to miss this rare occasion to train under legendary karate champion and instructor Mr. Davide Benetello, as well as under our National Team Head Coaches. On average, participating athletes are expected to benefit from approximately 2 to 3 hours of training / day) 5 B. “ELITE COMPETITION KATA TACTICS & TRAINING” With Guest Star Instructor Mr. AKIO TAMASHIRO (3-time Senior World Championships medalist & Head Kata Coach of the Peruvian Karate Federation), and with Karate Canada’s National Team Kata Head Coach, Mrs. Katarina Vadovicova. Mr. AKIO TAMASHIRO Mr. Tamashiro was undoubtedly one of the world’s foremost kata competitors of the last decade, having won a silver medal at the 2004 Sr World Karate Championships, and then winning bronze at both the 2006 and the 2010 Sr World Championships. He has, since, been sharing his in-depth expertise with his fellow Peruvian countrymen and women, and this nation’s kata athletes have been achieving, with his help, remarkable results on both the Pan American and world stages. Mr. Tamashiro was also named as Director of Sport for the upcoming Lima 2019 Pan American Games, and it is a great honour to have him return to Canada for a second consecutive year, in order to further share his training secrets with our elite kata athletes! Mrs KATARINA VADOVICOVA National Kata Team Head Coach, Katarina has a remarkable history as an exathlete who has medaled at the Paris Open in 2005, 2007, and 2008, finished 1st at the 2008 USA Open, and won the title of Pan American Champion in 2006. Mrs. Vadovicova now lends her valuable expertise to support the development of Canadian hopefuls and elites. She has, over the last few years, worked as a Provincial and National Team Kata Coach on a great number of occasions, and at such high-level events as the Junior and Senior World Karate Championships. Over the course of the Summit, these 2 highly seasoned kata coaches will share with you valuable lessons learned during recent international competitions as well as the secrets to success on the international stage. On average, participating athletes are expected to benefit from approximately 2 to 3 hours of training / day) 6 1- THE PROGRAM 1.2- PARA- KARATE EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR COACHES AND ATHLETES With Mrs. HEATHER FIDYK, Chair of Karate Canada’s PARA (formerly AWAD, or “Athletes with a Disability”) Committee and Para National Team Coach at the 2014 & 2016 World Championships for Persons with Disabilities, and with Karate Canada’s National Team Kata Head Coach, Mrs. KATARINA VADOVICOVA Mrs. Fidyk is a seasoned karate instructor with extensive hands-on Para experience, and she has accompanied and supported Canadian karate pioneer Para athlete Ms. Natalie Olson at the 1st World Karate Championships for Persons with Disabilities (Germany, November 2014) as a National Team Coach. Heather is also Karate Canada’s Para Committee Chair since May 2015, and is actively pursuing substantial growth and progress in this area. She is anxious to share useful tools and expertise with Coaches from across the nation, alongside National Team Kata Head Coach Mrs. Vadovicova, so as to empower them to provide optimal and adapted training to all Canadian AWAD athletes. ATHLETES: Karate Canada will offer one (or more) Para-specific kata training session(s) at this years edition of the Summit, where some of our Senior National Team Para athletes will also be preparing for participation in the upcoming 2016 World Karate Championships for Persons with Disabilities. National Team Para athletes will also have the opportunity to perform katas in front of National level officials. COACHES: This year’s Para Coach education workshop will consist in a practical training segment assembling Para participants and where Coaches and instructors will be invited to work directly with the athletes and alongside the Para National Team Coach(es), so as to get more familiar with efficient training adaptations. All are welcome! Date and time : • Saturday, October 1st, (Exact schedule to be confirmed soon.) 7 1- THE PROGRAM 1.3- NATIONAL REFEREE CLINIC With MR. YARO TARANA, Chair of Karate Canada’s Officials Committee Mr. YARO TARANA, who is currently a 7th Dan holder, is also one of Canada’s most experienced International Referees. Yaro holds a WKF Kumite Referee A license, as well as a Kata Judge A license. A constant world traveler, Mr. Tarana tirelessly seeks to perfect his skills as an International Referee while also further practicing his beloved art of karate-do himself. Yaro is currently the President of the Canada National Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Federation. He has served as a Referee at the 2014 World Championships, and was the sole Referee from Canada officiating at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. As Karate Canada’s Officials’ Committee Chair, Mr. Tarana has been generously and dedicatedly sharing his knowledge and expertise with his fellow Canadian Referees, so as to help raise the quality of officiating and to help ensure our officials meet the highest international standards. Mr. Tarana will lead this National Officiating Clinic, where he will provide guidance on the proper implementation of the latest and current WKF competition rules, including such elements as Instant Video Replay and para-karate. Exact schedule to be confirmed soon.) ** Please note that national evaluations and license upgrades will be offered as well during the course of this Clinic. Please bear in mind that Canadian Officials who wish to upgrade or to obtain a license in order to officiate at the upcoming 2017 National Championships will need to do so at either this National Referee Clinic or at a Regional Referee Clinic organized in conjunction with Karate Canada’s Officials Committee, as no National Referee Clinic or evaluation will be offered on site during the days preceding these 2017 National Championships. Additional fees apply for evaluations / testing and license upgrades (see section 4). Only registrants of KC -member Provincial / Territorial Karate Associations may take part in evaluations / testings and obtain license upgrades. 8 1- THE PROGRAM 1.4- KARATE –SPECIFIC “COMP-DEV” NCCP TRAINING COURSE FOR COACHES With Mr. GÉRARD LAUZIÈRE, Senior Coaching Consultant, High Performance at the Coaching Association of Canada, and Chair of Karate Canada’s NCCP Committee. NCCP SPORT-SPECIFIC MODULE Karate Canada is proud to offer a very important sport / karate-specific module, which is required of all coaches seeking training and certification at the Competition Development (Comp Dev) level, within the National Coaching Certification Program. This level of coaching education and certification is particularly relevant to coaches working with athletes who compete on the provincial and national scene, and is currently the highest sport-specific NCCP coaching certification offered by Karate Canada. We wish to remind all members that being considered “in training” at the Comp Dev level (or “trained” at the Comp Intro level) will be a mandatory pre-requisite for any and all coaches acting as Provincial / Territorial Team Coaches at the upcoming Karate Canada National Championships, as of 2017 (see Karate Canada’s “National Championships NCCP Policy”). This therefore constitutes a great opportunity for all to further their coaching education and to progress towards Comp Dev certification. Here is the (karate-specific) module being offered at the 2016 Summit: Karate Canada wishes to thank the Coaching Association of Canada and Investors Group for their financial support in delivering this NCCP Module. • “ ANALYZE TECHNICAL & TACTICAL PERFORMANCE ” The Analyze Technical & Tactical Performance module will allow you to: • Analyze technical and tactical performance for factors that influence performance. • Analyze technical and tactical performance by observing and defining key performance factors that affect technical and tactical performance • Analyze technical and tactical performance by applying the principles of motion to detect and correct key performance factors • Identify strategies to monitor and evaluate technical and tactical performance • Implement and assess the effectiveness of corrections Date and time : • Friday, September 30th, from 9 AM to 6:30 PM (Remains subject to change. Exact times to be confirmed.) 9 1- THE PROGRAM 1.5- OTHER CONFERENCES & PRESENTATIONS A. “DESTINATION TOKYO 2020 : KARATE CANADA’S NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE PLAN & DIRECTION” With Dr. PETER G. DAVIS, Founder and Director of Sport Performance Management, a USA-based consulting business specializing in performance management, and consultant / Chair of Karate Canada’s High Performance Committee since 2014. A graduate from the University of Oregon and from the University of Minnesota (in the USA), Dr. Davis has been involved in the field of elite sport management for over 28 years. In the 80’s, he has worked for Nike with the best Track and Field athletes in the world and helped prepare Australian athletes for the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics after which he was recruited by the United States Olympic Committee to direct their Coaching and Sport Sciences Division. He has thus worked with the US Olympic teams for the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games, the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games and the 2006 Torino Winter Olympic Games. Thereafter, Dr. Davis became the Director of Sport Sciences, Sports Medicine and Technology for “Own The Podium” in preparation for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. He also worked on various projects with both professional sports teams and amateur sports teams of all ages and all levels. In addition to his specific expertise in the field of high performance and his international experience, Dr. Davis is also a well-respected speaker and has delivered dozens of presentations, congresses, and conferences. In this lunch conference, Dr. Davis will present the broad lines of Karate Canada’s new High Performance Plan and discuss alignment strategies for successful nationwide integration of the athlete / podium pathway. GUS KANDILAS (DOMP, CAT(C), ATC - Ret) Mr. Kandilas is a certified Athletic Therapist and an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner with expensive combative sports-related experience who has regularly supported Karate Canada’s events and National Teams over the last few years. He has also taught for 25 years at York University in the Athletic Therapy Certificate Program, which falls under the umbrella of Kinesiology and Health Science. This Concussion Awareness and Management Seminar is designed for the participant who wants more information on concussion anatomy and physiology, injury recognition and management, as well as Return to Play and Return to Learn guidelines. Present and proposed Karate Canada concussion forms will also be discussed. Pre-requisite: The NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program) eLearning module ‘Making Head Way’ (free at coach.ca) • INVITED: While this presentation / workshop is primarily intended for Coaches and Instructors, officials and athletes are also welcome to attend. Members of Karate Canada’s Technical Committee will be at the Toronto Airport Sheraton Hotel & Conference Center on Saturday October 1st between 1 PM and 5 PM to evaluate karatekas and provide National Dan Certification. In order to register, please complete the DAN TEST APPLICATION FORM and follow the instructions. Registration for Dan Testing closes on September 16th. Upon receiving Dan Test Application forms, we will then contact candidates with more details on their examination.
