PRESS RELEASE
HAPA’S MOMENT OF TRUTH
The judging process for HAPA Malaysia 2010 has officially completed and the
scores are going through tabulation! With the total number of nominations
exceeding over 600 for this Malaysia Series of HAPA, the competition levels
are, without a doubt, “on fire”!
Come November, 115 nominees will be wondering who, amongst
them, will be taking home the 32 awards that will be presented at
the 9th edition of the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards (HAPA). This
particular edition is the Malaysia Series where award recipients will
be recognized for being the most outstanding and be coveted with
the respective titles from 2010-2012. Who will they be?
The Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards Gala Charity Dinner and Awards
Presentation Ceremony will be held at The Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur on
November 22, 2010. The theme colours for this black-tie event in 2010 are
black and electric blue. Cocktail will start at 6pm in the picturesque Taman
Mahsuri whilst the main gala event will be held at the Mayang Sari Grand
Ballroom.
Something different has been planned for this year’s gala event. The
entire awards presentation ceremony will not be in the same concept as
before. This will be precisely why punctuality would have to be strictly
observed for this year’s event. Any delay in attendance would definitely
affect the awards presentation in its entirety. Latecomers might end
up missing out on their own awards! In line with the HAPA tradition, all
nominees, especially nominated personalities, must be present in person
at this grand event.
The charity platform has always been HAPA’s personal interest as
it’s the awards’ way of giving back to the community through the nett
proceeds of the gala event. Year after year, HAPA works with children’s
charity organisations, with the hope that the generosity of the Organizer,
nominees, judges and, corporate and personal pledges can be channelled
to charitable causes. The ‘Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman
Megah’ has been selected to be the charity recipient for this HAPA year.
Before HAPA Malaysia can conclude, the Organizer and HAPA
Committee wish to thank all those who have helped make HAPA a success
till today. There could never be enough ‘thank you’ said to the Panel of
Judges simply because HAPA could never exist if this group of professional
volunteers did not exist. On the same note, HAPA would never be able to
sustain, or even begin, if there were no nominees in the first place. With that
said, HAPA would, first and foremost, like to say a BIG thank you to
the sponsors and nominees for believing and supporting HAPA till
this moment and the judges for doing what they do year in year
out – without complaint! Kudos to all!
So, don’t miss out, make sure November 22nd is marked
brightly on your calendar… and remember to dress your
best in black and electric blue!
Looking forward to seeing all of you at the event of
the year! Keep the HAPA spirit up till then!

PUSAT PENJAGAAN KANAK-KANAK CACAT
TAMAN MEGAH
S.K. Manikumar was born on September 13,
1962 and as a baby, he suffered from polio. As
a young man, he went to Tamar Sinar Harapan, a
home for the mentally and physically challenged
that was run by the government in Kuala Kubu
Baru, Selangor, with the Sri Sathya Sai Baba
Organization and did what he could to bring a little
joy to the residents there.
While volunteering his services at Tamar
Sinar Harapan, a thought grew in his mind: ‘why
not set up a home for the disabled?’ With that
precise thought, he rented a double-storey corner
house in Taman Megah and started a home for the
disabled, in early 1992.
In the beginning he had four children under
his care. He bathed, fed, taught and trained the
children, and did whatever else needed to be done
for them. His vision was to provide an environment
for the betterment of young disabled children, for
their difficulties to be recognized and for them to
be given equal status in society.
Mr Manikumar believed in four key
fundamentals, that the organization remain nonreligious, non-political, non-government and nonprofit. In 1997, he officially registered the home
under the welfare department as a non-profit
organization – PUSAT PENJAGAAN KANAK-KANAK
CACAT TAMAN MEGAH (“The Pusat”).
From then on, 138 children and adults of
multi-racial backgrounds with various disabilities
all live under one roof at The Pusat. The ages
of the residents ranged from 7 months to 55
years old and they come from all over Peninsular
Malaysia. Just over a hundred of the children are
disabled with challenges such as Down Syndrome,
Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Global Delay, Muscular
Dystrophy, Dwarfism, Apeth Syndrome, Neunan
Syndrome, Hyperactivity, physical challenges,
intellectual disabilities as well as speech, audio
and visual impairment. The rest of the children
are normal but hail from broken, abused or single
parent backgrounds.
Mr Manikumar wanted each and every one of the Pusat’s children to be independent and an example
to other special children. He used to tell them that EVERYTHING IS POSSILBE, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.
The Pusat is now a model for similar institutions. Undergraduates from various colleges spend part of
their community service time at the Pusat. Occupational and physiotherapy students are sent to the Pusat
for practical training.

CHARITY
All funds from the Pusat were single handedly raised by
Mr Manikumar. The Pusat needs about RM 60,000 per month
to sustain its operations. If that were not enough work for him,
he drove the only blind resident in the Pusat to school in Klang
each day and each night, while the most of Kuala Lumpur and
Petaling Jaya’s residents slept, he would drive to the Pusat to
check on the children. Many of them were prone to fits and
he always wanted to make sure that everything was well and
there were no emergencies.
Mr Manikumar was a man of great vision, so he purchased
insurance policies for the normal children to ensure that when
they reached 21 years of age, they would each receive a
capital sum to help them further their studies. This initiative,
which was carried out by him from the very beginning, is
based on the strong belief that only through education will
these children be able to break the vicious cycle of poverty
and insecurity, and grow up to be useful and contributing
adults in the world.
He dedicated his whole life fulfilling his vision, until he
suddenly passed away in a motor vehicle accident in 2006, at the age of 43. Even on his last journey,
he was on the road to raise funds for the children. His death came as a total shock and left a huge void
in the Pusat.
In recognition of his selfless services, he was posthumously awarded the NST – PriceWaterhouse
Coopers Malaysian LIFETIME HUMANITARIAN AWARD by the Hon. Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Abdullah
Ahmad Badawi in December 2006.
After Mr Manikumar’s passing, his wife R. Umah Devi heads the management of The Pusat to fulfill
and continue her husband’s vision. It costs approximately RM60,000.00 to run the Pusat. The Pusat
has no independent or regular sources of income. Initially, 2/3 of funds needed to run the home came
from sales of souvenirs produced at the Pusat by the special children and the remaining 1/3 came
from parents, individuals, companies and corporations. Unfortunately, the Pusat has no license to sell
souvenirs; therefore it is now dependent entirely on donations from the public. More detailed information
on The Pusat can be found at www.ppkkctm.org.

BONCAFE (M) SDN BHD
More than 1000 years ago, one day, an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi noticed that his goats weren’t
behaving in their usual calm placid selves. He discovered that the goats had eaten the berries of a
particular tree which, made them behave in this animated way!
Kaldi brought his surprising tale to the abbot of a monastery nearby, who poured boiling water onto
some berries and made a drink of it, and found that the drink helped him keep awake! And this was how
he and the other monks would drink of this concoction each night, and stayed awake for their long hours
of prayer and meditation.
The legend goes on to tell how this discovery created a demand for the drink. While stories and
tales abound about coffee and monks, it is known that coffee trees were cultivated in the gardens of the
monasteries in Yemen, and evidence suggests that coffee was cultivated 1000 years ago.
The two most commonly cultivated species of coffee for commercial purposes are the Coffea Arabica
and Coffea Robusta. Coffea Arabica thrives in high dry cooler altitudes from 600m to 2000m while Coffea
Robusta does well in humid tropical climate from sea level to 600m.
The coffee plant is an evergreen plant that grows up to a height of 2m-3m. The blossoming flowers
are white, and the berries green, and when they are ripe and turn a bright juicy red, they are the coffee
cherries! Arabica leaves differ from Robusta leaves in size and shape.
Coffee plants and cherries go through a long series of cultivation, harvesting, preparing and curing
(wet or dry methods) before they make it to coffee roasters to roast into those aromatic delicious coffee
beans/blends, cupped, which then finally get ground, brewed and sit in your cup for the very first sip!
Located at Sri Hartamas, Être Bon Gallery & Academy is a facility where Boncafé’s institutional
customers can come to be trained on their coffee making or barista skills. It also showcases the story of
coffee and Boncafé products, coffee machines, and equipment. Orders for premium single origin coffee
via Boncafé’s new Roast on Demand service can also be placed at this location.

HOSPITALITY RESOURCES SDN BHD
Within a relatively short time, Zieher products have established themselves as being “distinctive” works
of art. Increasingly, today’s F&B operators want to be unique and different and this has made it more
necessary than ever for Zieher to remain at the top through innovation and good design. The development
of new products in the table-top and buffet sectors is constantly growing at Zieher. Working with chefs,
designers and students, Zieher is able to offer buffet innovations of tomorrow.
The “Skyline” buffet system is one of these innovative designs that provides maximum flexibility
with exclusive presentations on buffets. Apart from its spectacular visual appearance that reminds one
of skyscrapers silhouettes and its enormous flexibility, this unique system leaves nothing to be desired.
Another new and innovative buffet system called “Konkret!” has been designed to create modern
architecture on the buffet. Clear cut lines, neutral forms and colours place special emphasis on the
presentation of food and offer at the same time greater flexibility and best usage of the buffet’s surface.
The cubes consist of a mixture of fibreglass and stone and therefore offer, next to the optics of concrete,
a low weight and high stability which facilitates handling to a great extent.
The “V12” – Carbon on the Buffet is one innovation that combines modern and reduced forms with
the precious material carbon bringing high-tech to the buffet. Slate, Marble and Granite are all combined
in the “Rock Art” collection. It stands out due to its modern and robust mixture of materials like natural
stone and glass. The dark brown marble columns are available in a few sizes and offered in polished or
carved. Various trivets made of natural stone are suited excellently for the presentation of finger food.
This is yet another innovative idea by Zieher.
Another shining example of Zieher’s system is the Lightning Buffet. Combined with trays in clear
glass, stained glass or slate, these illuminated elevation elements let your buffet shine in a radiant light.
The innovative LED technology does not emit any heat, operates with a harmless 12V power supply, has
a long lifespan and consumes very little energy.
And the best part of all these systems is that there are all compatible. Since all of them are available
in three different heights, there are a multitude of possibilities concerning design and material. ‘Creating
lasting impressions’ is what Hospitality Resources does best.

Since 1808, Maison M.Chapoutier is an estate that nurtures its vineyards with the greatest respect for
natural balance and terroir. The family motto “fac et Spera”, meaning ‘do and hope’, says it all, and they
sum up all the patience and daring that this art demands; patience in relation to nature which presides;
daring for the winemaker, who observes, chooses and assists. The wine will be the faithful expression
of this alchemy.
Members of the Chapoutier family have been working in the Rhone valley since 1808. A distant
ancestor, Polydor Chapoutier, was the first to buy vines here, shifting from being a simple grape grower
to making and trading his own wine. Since 1990, Michel, now in his forties, manages an exceptional
Estate, a land rich in history and tradition. Passionately interested in expressing the character of the soil,
Michel has found the means to give free rein to his convictions. A new era for winery, welcoming changes
that link traditions of the past with Michel’s daring convictions. Much as with every natural element, what
matters are weather, roots, vines and fruit. This is the basis for all the diversity and generosity of Maison
M.Chapoutier.
Michel Chapoutier started his love affair with wine at 26. A self-taught enthusiast and a curious
visionary, he brings to the winery a new approach and a powerful ambition. An idea of wine that soon
became all-embracing. The choices he made marked a break with past principles and prejudices. It is
his audacity and conviction, which he shares with his young team. Making an essential, emblematic,
choice, he decided to change the taste associated with Maison M.Chapoutier, to avoid cultivating “a
signature taste”, focussing instead on bringing out the differences and specific features of each terrior. 148

Kian has a wide buffet of products, ranging from tables and chairs for restaurants to sunloungers
and sofas for the outdoor and poolside areas. In addition to a standard range of products, Kian is able to
