The 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 3-5, 2007 Elizabethtown College Elizabethtown, Pa. Albright College Delaware Valley College DeSales University Elizabethtown College Juniata College Lebanon Valley College Messiah College Moravian College Susquehanna University Widener University Words of Welcome On behalf of the Elizabethtown College community, welcome to the 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. We are proud to host the championships for the first time in the College’s history. Nine years ago, track & field at Elizabethtown College was only a dream. This weekend is the culmination of years of effort by many individuals to turn that dream into reality. Meet directors and Elizabethtown College track & field coaches Eric Bennett ’04, Chris Straub, Mike Dager and Joel Hoffsmith, along with our Athletics administration led by Nancy Latimore, have put together a first-class championship for all to enjoy. We encourage you to take the time to explore our friendly campus, dine in the Marketplace or the Jay’s Nest, and warm up throughout the picturesque environs and the quiet neighborhoods that surround us. We hope for good weather – not too warm and not too cold and free from wind – and for good health to all who compete over these three days. In 1908, Bishop Ethelbert Talbot coined what would become the creed of the Olympic Games when he said, “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” That ideal translates well to the nature of competition in NCAA Division III, where true scholar-athletes pursue the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals and to develop sportsmanship and positive social attitudes. Those with whom you will compete during these championships are not your adversaries; they are your companions, sharing in an experience that you create together, be it a 400 meter hurdle race or a hammer throw competition. Your goals are the same – to together push the boundaries of what you thought yourselves capable. I hope you have an enjoyable experience here at Elizabethtown, and may all your performances be personal bests. Citius, Altius, Fortius. Dr. Theodore E. Long President, Elizabethtown College The David B. Eavenson, Sr. Awards In fondest memory of David B. Eavenson, Sr., the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Track & Field Officials annually presents a plaque to the winner of a selected men’s and women’s event at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. Eavenson was the founder of the Central Penn Chapter of PIAA Track & Field Officials, and he served as its secretary/treasurer. He also founded officials’ chapters for football and swimming. In addition, Eavenson was for many years the athletic director at Dickinson College, where he also coached men’s soccer and men’s and women’s swimming. Through his employment at Dickinson, Eavenson also served the Middle Atlantic Conference. He was the conference vice-president from 1970 to 1972, president for the 1972-73 academic year, secretary/treasurer from 1973 to 1976 and executive director from 1976 until his death in 1988 at the age of 74. This year, the David B. Eavenson, Sr. Awards will be presented to the winners of the men’s triple jump and of the women’s 400m hurdles. Meet Officials Thursday, May 3: Starter: Larry Godshall. The idea of Elizabethtown College hosting The MAC Championships started nearly nine years ago when the current freshman class was in 3rd grade! Like the 10,000m, it’s taken a long, patient effort to get to this point, but here we are and we’re finishing well! I would like to thank some of those who got us (specifically me) to this point: o First, my coaching staff and I at Elizabethtown College would like to acknowledge those track & field athletes, alumni and present members alike, who have pushed us to be as great as they in the pursuit of dreams. Seniors Mike Bauer, Dave Bresnahan (sort of a senior), David Cohen, Patrick Donovan, DJ Lehr (sort of a senior), Brian Murphy, Jason Theobald, Sarah Chick, Erin Deihl, Tara Fagan, Lori Havrilak (sort of a senior), Kim Lamp, and Dawn Mellen. All of you, like our alumni, can be proud “to have finished the race”. You have “run the race” with patience, poise, and a burning desire, regardless of how the race unfolded, to run hard all the way through the line. Your desire, or some would say ‘stubbornness’ to stick with the most demanding of sports will serve you well as you go on to pursue greatness in that other equally challenging and more complex endeavor—life. Thank you for teaching us and allowing us to teach you. We are blessed and honored that you call us “coach”. o Mike Dager, Joel Hoffsmith, and Eric Bennett—the current Elizabethtown College track & field coaching staff. We’ve been through a lot together! You guys do it for the love of this great sport and the values it instills. It’s moments like seeing Prince clear the crossbar at Rose-Holman to become our first-ever national champion…Fish run out of her freakin’ skull down at Distance Night last Thursday...the men’s 4X800m beat Georgetown, JMU, UVA, and so many others down at Raleigh last year…earning those “naked man plaques” in the 4X400m relays down at Penn the past four years…it’s those moments that we walk a little taller, are proud of the program and tradition we have established here, and the way we have done it—with good ol’ fashioned Pennsylvania blue-collar hard work. It’s been a great ride—thanks for pulling together so well over the past few months to make this project a reality. o Jim Taylor—my former boss at Susquehanna/Coach Emeritus/MAC Daddy, Vince Touey—Widener, Dale Fogelsanger—Messiah, Al Weiner/Gordon Hornig—DeSales, Jon Cutright—Juniata, Doug Pollard—Moravian, and several other assistant coaches on our loyal coaching staffs. This group has been around awhile now (understatement) and we’ve done the honorable thing and tried to build well-rounded track & field programs with both genders even though we know there are other ways of performing our duties. After nearly a decade in the MAC, Mike Dager, Joel Hoffsmith, and I like to think of ourselves as part of “this club of elder statesmen”. We’ve been through some competitive battles over the years, but what I’ve always liked and admired most about this group of coaches is how there are ‘no hard feelings’ with recruiting or after MACs, and come NCAAs, all our athletes passionately support one another and truly get to know one another. Vince’s approach has always been admirable in my eyes—“You ask your kids to go to war for you so you go to war for your kids. Period.” I like our rules of engagement. Like we’ve said at our annual meetings, if only everyone involved in the decision to break up the conference would have witnessed a MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship over the years, maybe we wouldn’t be in the position we are today. Certainly, the spirit of Division III athletics is alive and well in the MAC! The MAC has become one of the top 5-10 track & field conferences in the nation. It’s a beautiful thing—so let’s enjoy it this one last time! Next year, by all accounts, we’ll be split and have two mediocre conference meets instead of one all-out war with national-caliber performances in nearly every event. It’s so true that sometimes you don’t know how good you have it until its gone, but we, the elder statesmen of track & field—we know how good it can be. As always, let’s keep it friendly, but super competitive! o Ian Showalter—our Sports Information Director. Your work is impeccable. Few, if any, work harder and do so much with so little. I continue to be amazed. May you keep the sense of humor because sometimes all you can really do is laugh and shake your head. o Scott Nissley, and especially Todd Sieber and Tim Laraia, for going above and beyond in turning our track & field facility into a first-class venue. Todd and Tim—I consider you two of my closest of friends—thanks for your professionalism, as well as, always being available to discuss “the state of the union”. We have bleachers, electric and H2O on the infield, a freshly striped track, the largest sand pits in the U.S. (sorry, couldn’t resist), and a truly great looking venue with the necessary amenities—it’s go time. o Nancy Latimore, Marianne Calenda, Ted Long—our Athletics Director, Dean of Students, and President. Thank you for your desire and actions to support the track & field program through the years. I can only hope that the number of positives continues to outweigh the setbacks and inevitable struggles we face. You can be confident that the track & field program has had a positive impact on great leaders in classrooms, board rooms, on athletic fields, and at the kitchen tables throughout the years. We will continue to lead and use our sport as a vehicle to teach life lessons with the continued support and resources necessary to make valuable contributions in the lives of young men and women. Please join us 6:00-8:00pm Saturday at the post-MAC BBQ. o Eric Walker for set-up of the tents and sound system, the ES staff for set up of the gym and dealing with our “indoor track equipment” and running shoes all over the locker room, and Bob Schlosser for arranging all the volunteers and army of workers needed to run a 3-day track & field meet—thankless work indeed. You guys got it done and done right—thanks! o Yonnie Kauffman, Nancy Latimore, Mike Dager, Mr. Rosenau, Kathy Christopher, Lynda Hudzick, and Christine Horning for all pulling together and handling concessions, hospitality for the coaches and officials over Friday and Saturday, and the post-MAC BBQ for the team, parents, alumni, and friends—thanks SO much! o Jack Longenecker, Director of Campus Security, and Nancy Latimore for handling parking as best we can given the circumstances. o Mike Ebersol and Jake Keeler for handling the announcing responsibilities Friday and Saturday and Josiah Novack for presiding over our awards ceremony for top 8 finishers. o A special thanks to Ken Andrews—Executive Director of the MAC for arranging officials and timing crew. Specifically, thanks to Dave Eavenson, Bill Gallagher, and Jim Ellingsworth in all their help answering questions about meet management and Fully Automatic Timing. The MAC coaches look forward to working with you once again as we all put on our ‘hats’ and play our roles over three days of competition in this, the purest of sports. o Mike Sweger and Tanya Miller—Athletic Trainers. Thank you for all your willingness to go with the flow. We understand we (track & field coaches and athletes) are a unique and rare breed. Thanks for rolling with the punches and dealing with all that comes your way. o Coach Joe—#1 fan of all things that are Blue Jay, Tom “Drac” Williams—photographer and #1 fan of ECTF, Marjorie Pape—Admissions, Linda at the Caf., Tracy Sadd—Chaplain, Barb Shank—Copy Services, Gordon Bateman, Skip Roderick, Carole Isaak, Stephanie Rankin, Shirley Deichert, Laurie Gordon, Andy Sagar, so many professors to begin to name, and others who are so supportive our cross country and track & field programs over the years. Thank you for your support and guidance—especially over the past academic year—which has been the most difficult yet. o Mr. and Mrs. John—our prayers and thoughts continue to go out to you. Not a day goes by when I don’t miss Katelyn. She was a tremendously gifted and hard-working young woman and I’m a better person for having her in my life—if only for 1-1/2 years. Her laugh and especially her leadership are so greatly missed. This team has done the best we can to push ahead. Her close friend Chelsea Miles continues to be one of the key players in carrying the torch for the women’s track & field program this year—and many others have refused to give up, or slack off, and have responded in a positive way as well. When I watch Chelsea compete, I know she is, at times, being lifted up on the wings of Katelyn’s spirit. May the Lord give you moments of peace. o Traci, Seneca, and Milligan—my girls. What can I say?! As only the significant others of my coaching brethren can attest—it’s no easy thing having a coach as a husband/father. A XC/T&F coach is rarely home before 8:00pm from August-May and family dinners and Saturdays spent together rarely exist—yet summer is almost here and that is one of our great rewards! Thanks for encouraging me to do what I feel in my heart I have to do. I love you guys. o And last but not least, a HUGE THANK YOU to ALL the volunteers and student workers—most of it is not glamorous or easy work—pulling tape measures, raking sand, or moving hurdles, but it’s as grassroots and serviceoriented as it gets! When you wake up the next day you will be rewarded with sore muscles to remind you that you put in a good, honest day’s labor!
