Nordic Game Sales 2013 Retail & Digital PREFACE With the Wii U celebrating one year on the market, 2013 was the year when we began to see the full spectrum of the next generation, as both Sony and Microsoft started transitioning toward PlayStation 4 and Xbox One respectively – a new era of HD consoles. Worldwide, PS4 was perhaps the most successful console release in history, selling over one million units on its first day, growing to 4,2 by the end of 2013, clearly showing us the fervent demand for next-gen AAA gaming. The Xbox One has also performed spectacularly well, selling one million units within the first 24 hours of release, a figure growing to three million in January 2014. The PS4 game sales reported in this year’s report are naturally somewhat limited, both by the fact of the console releasing late in the year – in November – and the reality that the console is still in scant supply, if not completely sold out, at several locations. Awaiting new shipments of hardware, the console’s software sales have still been an important factor in revitalizing the console market. The PS4’s older sibling – the PS3, has meanwhile performed very well considering the general decline of brick and mortar sales, and clearly stands out in this report by its marginal decrease in volume and increase in value. Add the console’s digital market place in the mix and you have a more than decent year for ushering in its successor. The Nintendo 3DS is another platform that maintains momentum. Microsoft’s Xbox One is yet to be released in the Nordic region, although that hasn’t stopped publishers from already selling the actual games. However, we will wait until official release before presenting sales numbers on the format. Evident is that the next generation of consoles have been tailored to a digital world, incorporating more connectivity including streaming and various online and social services. Meanwhile, many publishers start to noticeably broaden their catalogues in order to reach out to more audiences, be it with mobile or various online ventures, adapting to ever changing consumer habits. Although several franchises continued on strongly, like Battlefield, Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty, the newest entries have initially not surpassed their predecessors. This can in large parts be attributed to the ongoing console transition, where consumers tend to prep for upcoming releases. Still, 2013 follows the now classic formula of seeing the release of a new game that beats previous records and installs itself as the biggest ever entertainment release in history. Last year, it was Grand Theft Auto V, grossing one billion dollars in just three days, beating blockbuster films like The Avengers by more than two weeks. Video Games are clearly taking their place as the number one entertainment industry. Today’s globalized society is a chapter of its own. With increasing e-commerce, an undetermined chunk of the retail space seeps out to other regions. This doesn’t necessarily thwart the industry as such, but may redistribute traceable sales to nonintended regions. The big news of this year is that we are presenting an estimate of digital sales numbers for the first time. Based on a tailored report by the American market intelligence company SuperData Research, this digital outlook together with physical sales reported by Gfk presents a more complete picture of the Nordic market. This picture totals nearly one billion euro, far more than any previous figure reported in Nordic Game Sales (read more about digital sales on page 8-9). Hardware sales or time cards are not included in this report. Neither are sales of peripherals, hardware or out-of-region e-commerce. Digital Data The digital numbers are not, unlike retail sales, based on actual sell-through data by Gfk. They are instead taken from an estimate by American company SuperData Research. The digital overview was informed by transaction data from the Nordic region (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland) that totaled 804 826 unique digital paying gamers that in aggregate have made 1,957,231 digital game transactions over the 2011-2013 period. A majority, about 70 percent, were transacted in 2013. Historical Data Please note that numbers from reports earlier than 2010 are not directly comparable to current estimates. This is due to different methods, with other conditions since the co-operation with Gfk. Before, data was based on net sales converted to consumer expenditures, i.e. extrapolated distributor figures rather than actual sales to the end consumer. With the transition to Gfk, we have communicated sale-through numbers, more accurately reflecting the consumer market. For an up-to-date picture of historical data, see page 15. The changes in historical numbers compared to last year’s report is a result of updated exchange rates. NORWAY FINLAND SWEDEN DENMARK Nordisc Game Sales 2013 | 3 DIGITAL METHODOLOGY CATEGORY SCOPE Process All calculations are based on transaction-level data collected across social games, mobile games, free-to-play MMOs, payto-play MMOs, PC-DLC, and Console-DLC, worldwide. Metrics are calculated directly from primary transaction data collected by SuperData, secondary sources, and publicly available information from private and public companies. Models are further updated in continuous feedback loop with publishers and developers. Social Games that are designed within a social networking framework or promote social interaction throughout game play. Can be distributed across PC, tablet, and mobile platforms and are mostly F2P. Contains Social Mobile Data. MMO Massively Multiplayer Online Games that involve both persistent and instance worlds in which users can interact SuperData Database SuperData’s internally built purchase history database includes in-game payment data for hundreds of games through strong relationships with industry leading game developers, game publishers, and payment service providers. Public Information Game publishers and developers occasionally release metrics via their website, investor relation reports, conferences, and public interviews.
