Suffolk Theater Friday, February 6 Pandafan $25 Jack’s Waterfall $30 Door Kerry Kearney Band Randy Jackson Late-Night Jam Randy Jackson Randy Jackson was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He started playing piano and guitar at age 5 and his earliest influences were Les Paul and Mary Ford, The Beatles, The Allman Brothers, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, The Moody Blues, and Led Zeppelin. In 1973, he joined Shepards Bush as lead guitarist and was here that he met bassist Felix Hanemann. They left Shepards Bush a year later, and soon met drummer Guy Gelso and formed Zebra in 1975. It was at this point that Randy started singing lead vocals. After playing the New Orleans circuit for a year Zebra moved to New York and in 1982 signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records. Their first album, Zebra went gold and became the fastest selling debut album in the history of Atlantic Records. During the next couple of years Zebra opened for Aerosmith, Journey, ZZ Top, Loverboy, Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar and REO Speedwagon. The group produced five albums and five videos with combined sales of over 2,000,000! In 1989 Randy got the call to tour playing guitar and keyboards with the original Jefferson Airplane (Grace Slick, Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady) on their U.S. reunion tour! In September 1995 Randy performed his first show with a symphony in Norfolk, Virginia with the Virginia Symphony singing lead vocals and adding acoustic guitar to their performance of “The Music of Led Zeppelin.” Today, Randy continues to perform in the shows nationwide to sold out audiences and is also performing “The Music of Pink Floyd,” “The Doors,” and “The Eagles.” KERRY KEARNEY BAND Randy Jackson Kerry Kearney Band Jack’s Waterfall 4 Winterfest - Live On The Vine 2015 Kerry Kearney, a Long Island native, plays an exciting and unique style of Blues-Roots-Delta music – a completely original sound – tag named “Psychedelta.” He has toured both nationally and internationally, sharing the stage with notables such as; The Allman Brothers, Dickey Betts, Robert Randolph, Sonny Landreth, Leon Russell, John Lee Hooker Jr and Mountain. Jim Babjak, Dennis Diken and original bassist Mike Mesaros grew up in Carteret, New Jersey, forging a friendship as teenagers through a mutual love of ‘60s rock ‘n’ roll. After meeting the similarly inclined DiNizio, the four formed the Smithereens, and won some local renown with a pair of independently released EPs, 1980’s Girls About Town and 1983’s Beauty and Sadness. (Later addition Severo “the Thrilla” Jornacion, joined the band in 2006.) The Smithereens were already a seasoned live act by the time they achieved commercial success in 1986 with their first full album Especially for You, 8 Winterfest - Live On The Vine 2015 that spawned the MTV hits “Blood and Roses” and “Behind the Wall of Sleep.” The band continued to reap considerable airplay, critical acclaim and fan loyalty with the subsequent hits “Only a Memory,” “House We Used to Live In,” “Drown in My Own Tears” and “A Girl Like You.” Their newest cd, Smithereens 2011 caps an extended period during which the Smithereens limited their recording efforts to a series of thematic releases that paid homage to the group’s formative influences. They tipped their hats to the Beatles with Meet The Smithereens! and BSides The Beatles, and honored The Who with The Smithereens Play Tommy. The band also delivered a memorable seasonal set with the holiday-themed Christmas with the Smithereens, and affirmed their status as one of rock’s most powerful performing units with Live In Concert!, recorded on stage in New Jersey. Through it all, the Smithereens have maintained a busy performing schedule, preserving their reputation as one of rock’s hardestworking live bands, and continuing to thrill their devoted fan base. Smithereens 2011’s title slyly acknowledges the fact that it’s the band’s 11th studio album, and that it’s been 11 years since their last collection of original material. The album’s moniker – as well as its cover design – also pays tribute to the 1989 release Smithereens 11. Smithereens 2011 also reunites the group with revered producer and kindred musical spirit Don Dixon, who was at the helm for the band’s debut album Especially for You, 1988’s Green Thoughts, and 1994’s acclaimed A Date with the Smithereens. “I think it’s as good as anything we’ve ever done,” Pat DiNizio says of Smithereens 2011. “It has the raw vibe of our early albums, while showing that we’re moving forward and that we’re still at the top of our game after 31 years.” adds Jim Babjak. Venue Directory page 39 · Symbol Key page 40 Saturday February 21 Suffolk Theater Amy Helm Amy Helm’s deep musical roots were enriched by a lifetime of exposure to the finest expressions of American musical tradition. Combined with her stunning vocal and other creative gifts, those roots have grown up to reveal a spellbinding artist who moves easily through a broad range of musical styles. The daughter of music legend Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus Fagen, Helm wields a powerful voice that can both stir and soothe, whether she is singing traditional gospel, blues standards or her own heartfelt compositions. She is a gifted musician on both mandolin and drums, and has clearly absorbed the lessons of the many accomplished artists with whom she has shared stages, including Mavis Staples, Emmylou Harris, and Joan Osborne as well as Warren Haynes, The Wood Brothers, Donald Fagen, Dr. John and Hubert Sumlin. A founding member of the roots band Ollabelle with whom she has recorded three CDs, her distinc- tive voice can be heard on recordings by artists ranging from Mercury Rev to Marc Cohn. Her resume is highlighted by many years of singing and playing alongside her father, with whom she conceived and perfected the Midnight Rambles, intimate performances held since 2004 at his home and studio in Woodstock, NY. The musical chemistry, affectionate humor and family pride that Amy shared on stage with her father helped shape the Midnight Ramble as it evolved into a musical event that still attracts fans and musicians from around the world. She co-produced Levon Helm’s 2007 CD Dirt Farmer, which won the Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album, and she is prominently featured on the Levon Helm Band’s Electric Dirt and Ramble at the Ryman Grammy-winning albums. Helm continues to perform with the Levon Helm and Dirt Farmer Bands. She is poised to release her first solo album in the spring. Creative digital productions for a mobile world! He has led or co-led a daunting assortment of tradition-minded and experimental groups, big bands, blues and funk projects and even a trombone quartet. Anderson attended the University of Chicago Lab School, where one of his classmates was another notable trombone original, George Lewis. His teachers included Frank Tirro and Dean Hey. In 1973, Anderson moved to New York where he studied and played with composer and music theorist Jimmy Giuffre, joined drummer Barry Altschul’s free-form trio and played for three years with the quartet of AACM saxophone hero Anthony Braxton. 16 Winterfest - Live On The Vine 2015 RAY ANDERSON In the ‘80s, he garnered attention with collective bands including the funk-oriented Slickaphonics and the trio BassDrumBone, featuring bassist Mark Helias and drummer Gerry Hemingway. Anderson is gifted teacher and has long been in demand for workshops and master classes around the world. In 2001, he was a Guest Faculty member of the Music Department at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He was hired as the Director of Jazz Studies there in 2003. “I really enjoy teaching,” he says. “As I get older I seek to serve music not only by performing but by helping to inspire the next generation. Kumalo creates a singular electric fretless bass sound teeming with double stops that sound like human voices and the African grooves of his homeland, and has garnered him a stellar reputation as a sideman. In addition to touring with Simon, he’s also recorded and/or toured with the likes of Gloria Estefan, Derrick Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, Chico Ceasar, Harry Belafonte, Laurie Anderson, Cyndi Lauper, Gerald Albright, Miriam Makeba, Randy Brecker, Grover Washington Jr., Bob James, Angelique Kidjo, Jon Secada, Josh Groban and Chris Botti. Kumalo has also been active as a solo artist, with four fine albums to his credit – 1998’s San’ Bonan, 2000’s In Front of My Eyes, 2008’s Transmigration, and 2011’s Change – as well as three award winning children’s albums recorded with his wife, vocalist Robbi K. Kumalo’s bass-playing history began in Soweto where he grew up surrounded by music. His mother sang in a church choir and his uncle, a saxophone player, was always at his house rehearsing his band. “Every weekend, everyone would be at my house singing and playing all day,” Kumalo says. “Plus there were bands on every block of my neighborhood. So, music surrounded me. There was traditional African rhythmic music as well as a cappella vocal groups. I picked up the bass early and realized I could follow the groove of a tune with it. 18 Winterfest - Live On The Vine 2015 Hotel Indigo - Bistro 72 I could play the bass lines from a cappella music, and I learned how to develop lines based on the left-hand work of accordion players in the township bands.” However, it was an 18-month road trip with his uncle’s band to Zululand when he was 14 that helped to solidify his bass voice. The band gigged as well as played at schools and hospitals, but got stranded there. During that downtime, Kumalo had a dream where he saw someone playing, using his thumb in a particular way. That set him on the path of bass discovery. Kumalo says it wasn’t until later that he heard the fretless sound by people like Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Bailey. “And, of course, there was Jaco Pastorius,” he says. “I heard him, and I thought, ‘hey, that’s like me.’” While Kumalo became a professional at an early age in his uncle’s band, life in apartheid South Africa posed many challenges; so many, in fact, that Kumalo began to look for work outside the music field. However, a producer friend introduced him to Simon, whose music he was largely unfamiliar with. Despite his nervousness in meeting the American pop star in a studio setting, Kumalo says Simon immediately gravitated to his bass style. Kumalo’s work on Graceland opened the doors for him to pursue other avenues, including recent recordings with Herbie Hancock, Randy Brecker and Cyndi Lauper. Plus, he hooked up with former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, who took the bassist on tour with him. “Mickey was great,” Kumalo says. “There was no audition. He told me to pack up my bass and not to worry about learning the music because that would happen on the road. It was a great time.” Venue Directory page 39 · Symbol Key page 40 GREAT SOUTH BAY MUSIC FESTIVAL Back For Its 9th Year...Bigger Than Ever! Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works – solo or with a group – Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected. Key to Jordan’s fast-track acclaim was his mastery 26 Winterfest - Live On The Vine 2015 Bossa Nova Raphael Winery of a special technique on the guitar’s fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan’s innovative “touch technique” is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. His fluid, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence. His music is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination of listeners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar, Jordan wanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar, so he applied piano principles to do so. Jordan’s touch technique allows the guitarist to play melody and chords simultaneously with an Venue Directory page 39 · Symbol Key page 40 Saturday March 14 unprecedented level of independence. It also allows him to play simultaneously on two different guitars, or even on guitar and piano. He says “I think of it as a single instrument, but one with a wide range of tonal colors.” Jordan has performed in over 60 countries on six continents. He has performed at many festivals, including the Kool Jazz Festival, the Concord Jazz Festival, and the Montreaux International Jazz Festival. During the 1980s he collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including performances with Art Blakey and Richie Cole and recordings with Stanley Clarke and Kenny Rogers. The track with Rogers, “Morning Desire,” became America’s #1 country song in 1986. Later Jordan became a frequent guest with Les Paul during Paul’s legendary Monday nights at Iridium in New York. Today Jordan performs frequently as a soloist and with his band, as well as collaborating with other guitarists such as Kevin Eubanks, Sharon Isbin and Muriel Anderson. He’s also a frequent guest with jam bands such as the Dave Matthews Band, the String Cheese Incident, Phil Lesh, Moe and Umphrey’s McGee. Jordan has received four Grammy nominations. His most recent album Friends was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Los Angeles Times jazz critic Leonard Feather wrote, “Genius is a word often tossed around in musical circles, but it has been rightfully applied to Stanley Jordan.” Stanley Jordan was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He began his music career at age six studying piano, then shifting his focus to guitar at age eleven. He then began playing in rock and soul bands. In 1976, while still in high school, he performed with Quincy Jones and tied for first place as a soloist at the Reno International Jazz Festival. In 1981 he earned a BA in music from Princeton University and performed with Benny Carter and Dizzy Gillespie. Jordan maintains an extensive and consistent international touring schedule. In between tour stops he works on his next highly anticipated album from Mack Avenue Records, for release next year. He is currently a resident of Sedona, Arizona. Roomful of Blues was born in Westerly, Rhode Island in 1967 when guitarist Duke Robillard and keyboardist Al Copley began exploring the swinging, jumping blues, R&B and jazz of the 1940s and 1950s. They added a horn section (including Rich Lataille) in 1970. The band’s ability to ignite a sedate crowd into a dancing frenzy solidified their reputation as the best “little big band” in New England. In 1974, they performed with Count Basie. A few years later legendary songwriter Doc Pomus helped them land their first record deal. In 1977, Roomful of Blues’ self-titled debut album brought them to the attention of fans and critics from coast to coast. Recording for Rounder Records’ Bullseye Blues and Varrick labels between 1980 and 2001, the band cut nine albums. Chris Vachon joined in 1990 and guided the band to a Grammy nomination with their 1995 album, Turn It On! Turn It Up!. Twice, the prestigious DownBeat International Critics Poll selected them as Best Blues Band. Roomful joined the Alligator Records with the Grammy-nominated That’s Right! in 2003, followed by Standing Room Only in 2005 and Raisin’ A Ruckus in 2008. Now, they’re back with Hook, Line & Sinker, a foot-stomping CD highlighting the intense vocal and instrumental power of the band. The CD features twelve carefully chosen songs from Little Venue Directory page 39 · Symbol Key page 40 Room FulL OF BLUES Richard, Dave Bartholomew, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown and others. The CD is a ferocious and enthusiastic blast of rocking guitars, punching horns and huge, room-filling vocals. The results are a non-stop, hip-shaking party. It’s clear why People Magazine said Roomful “can turn a dull evening at home into a heel-clicking night of fun.” ROB is one of the tightest, most joyful blues ensembles in the world and they have never sounded fresher or stronger than with the current line-up. In addition to Vachon and Lataille, long-time members drummer Ephraim Lowell, keyboardist Travis Colby and baritone and tenor saxophonist Mark Earley, the band’s present incarnation includes vocalist Phil Pemberton, bassist John Turner and trumpeter Doug Woolverton. Roomful have played countless clubs and concerts and many major festivals, including The King Biscuit Blues Festival, The Beale Street Music Festival, Blues On The Fox, Monterey Blues Festival, and overseas at The North Sea Jazz Festival, The Stockholm Jazz Festival, and The Montreux Jazz Festival, to name a few. They’ve gigged with stars ranging from B.B. King, Otis Rush and Stevie Ray Vaughan to Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana. The band has toured – for over 40 years – virtually non-stop, hitting cities from coast to coast, and across Europe to Turkey and Russia. ROB have backed legendary musicians like Jimmy Witherspoon, Roy Brown, Joe Turner, and Earl King – stars of the 1940s and 1950s blues and R&B scene – the very people who created the music that Roomful still keeps vital and alive. The Roomful Horns have backed many artists including Pat Benatar on her 1991 album True Love and Stevie Ray Vaughan on his 1984 Live At Carnegie Hall album. The Chicago Sun-Times said, “This is a band on top of its game, sliding easily from big-band jazzblues to guitar-drenched urban blues...let the party begin.” Winterfest - Live On The Vine 2015 31 Sunday March 22 1- 3 Bedell Cellars Next Level Band Advance Martha Clara Ed Travers Vineyards Jimmy Buffett Tribute Raphael Winery Heron Suites Jack Licitra $15 Advance Jason’s Vineyard Brandy Hart Band $15 Advance 2 - 5 A Lure Chowderhouse The Lucky Tones JJ Sansaverino 2 - 6 Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard Acoustic Soul 3:30 - 5:30 Sparkling Pointe Samba Jazz Trio The Miho Nobuzane $15 Advance $20 Door Soul Featuring the NORTH FORK WINE WALL Offering a Large Variety of North Fork Wines ANY BOTTLE ONLY $25! 10095 Main Rd.
