Reporter From the Homeowners Association Board of Directors November 2015 Thanksgiving Season! hope you all enjoyed the great fall color throughout the subdivision. You may have noticed that we are in the process of decorating the entranceways for the upcoming holidays. This should be completed soon with the goal of having the holiday lights turned on by Thanksgiving. The RRHOA Board occasionally gets questions about the creeks that run though the subdivision. All the creeks fall under the jurisdiction of the City of Naperville and Will County. They may not be altered in any way without the approval of those government bodies. Any questions, concerns, or problems should be addressed and/or reported to the city. Also, a reminder again to review the Architectural Guidelines and complete the form in this newsletter prior to starting any exterior work on your home such as roofs, patios, etc. This will help to avoid any fines or delays with your project. If you have any questions, please contact Rowell. The snow season will soon be upon us, so please remember to shovel your walkways (a city ordinance) so the children have a safe path to walk going to school. We will soon be calling for volunteers to run for the RRHOA Board. Please reach out to one of the board members if you would like to know more about serving on the board. Since 1961, the Club has been hosting the Cup of Cheer™ House Walk, Holiday Market and Tea. Four homes have been selected to be decorated for the holidays and they will dazzle you. Our workshop committee has been creating holiday decorations to be sold at the Holiday Market. Also at the Holiday Market, our members host a tea where you may relax awhile and enjoy home-baked cookies and coffee or tea, served in your new teacup. This year’s commemorative teacup features a cardinal, coincidentally the mascot of North Central College. (Keep reading and you will see why this is worth mentioning.) The Holiday Market and Tea are held at the White Activities Center on the campus of North Central College at 325 E. Benton Avenue. North Central College provides a home for the President and his family. T Built in the mid 1870’s, the mansion has been a single family home as well as a multi-apartment dwelling. It has been renovated to fit the needs of a modern family with teenagers while keeping the charm of the 19th century. The mascot of North Central College is the cardinal and that bird will be the focus of the decorating of this home. The Krauss home will surely instill the spirit of the holidays in all who enter. Retired teachers, the couple now enjoys staging homes and creating contemporary art. They host many parties and you will get ideas on how to entertain in your own home. The Martin-Mitchell Mansion is the jewel of Naper Settlement. Built in 1883, the home will be decorated as if it were the pre-WWI era of 1915 or so. This is the era noted in many of the episodes of the TV series Downton Abbey. The mayor of Naperville and his wife, Steve and Julie Chirico, welcome you into their home. It is a traditional home that has undergone extensive renovations during the past eight years they have owned the home. Naperville stores Little Luxuries and Room 363 will transform this home into a holiday wonderland. Tickets are $35 for Friday, December 4th and $55 for Preview Day, Thursday, December 3rd, when a limited number of tickets will be sold and there will be no waiting in line to tour the homes. You may buy tickets at Country Curtains on Main Street, Naperville Bank and Trust on Naper Blvd. just south of Hobson Road, Nona Jo’s on 5th Avenue, The Growing Place on Plank Road, and both Oxford Bank locations at Rt. 59 and 83rd Street and Book Road and 75th. Only Country Curtains and Nona Jo’s sell Preview Day tickets. For more information or to purchase tickets online, visit our website www.napervillegardenclub.org or call our ticket chairperson Barbara at 630964-7408. Proceeds support the mission and activities of the Club and the scholarships we award to local students. Water sprouts are long, vertical, straight shoots that have grown in one season usually along main branches. They tend to break easily and do not usually flower. Suckers are shoots that form at the base of the tree. • Do not prune spring flowering trees and shrubs in the fall. Viburnum, redbud, lilac, fothergilla, crabapples, and others have all set their buds for spring so pruning now will reduce the amount of flowers you will have in the spring. Vegetable Gardens • After the first killing frost, remove and compost all disease-free plant material. Incorporate 2”-3”of organic matter or leave it on top for the earthworms to work and turn it under next spring. Working the soil amendments into garden beds now will allow you to get into the garden earlier in the spring. Falling Leaves Watering • Watering is key. It's important to continue to water your new and established plantings until the ground freezes. If your sprinkler system has been shut down for the season, it's time to bring out the hoses. Rose Care • Wait to prune your roses until spring. With our winters, there will be some cane die back and the longer the canes the better the survival. • Protecting grafted roses (hybrid tea, grandiflora and floribunda). Surround with chicken wire and fill with about 8-12”of loose mulch and leaf clippings. Wait until after the ground freezes to do this because if the temperatures are too warm when the mulch is applied, the stems and crown can start to rot. Evergreen boughs will also make a great mulch and helps keep the rabbits away. • Hardier shrub roses do not need protection. Pruning • Pruning stimulates new growth so the best time to prune trees and shrubs is after all the leaves have fallen and they are dormant. You can then remove crossing, dead and • Fallen tree leaves makes great garden mulch. Use your mower or a shredder to chop leaves up to the size of your thumb nail or smaller. Use leaf mulch to insulate roses, add it to your compost pile, use it as garden mulch in landscape beds, incorporate into edible garden beds and spread thinly on the lawn to decompose over the winter. Perennials • Some perennial plants benefit from being cut back in late fall, and others are best left to late winter or spring for practical and aesthetic reasons. With some exceptions it’s best to wait until late winter or early spring to cut back perennials. Exceptions include those plants prone to powdery mildew such as herbaceous peony, monarda and tall phlox, and plants that aggressively reseed. Cut back diseased leaves but don’t put them in your compost pile. • Several plants survive better if left unpruned. Butterfly bush, asters, foxglove and mums in particular benefit from foliage left over the winter to insulate the crown of the plants. Some plants such as Russian sage, caryopteris and fallopia will die if cut back in fall. Tool Tune-Up • Take the time to clean your tools of mud, soil and garden debris. Give then a sharpen if necessary and put them away for ready use next season. November 2015 The River Run Reporter 5 Preparing for the Thanksgiving Feast Early November • Choose a menu. • If you’re ordering a fresh turkey, do it now; if you’re buying a frozen turkey, you still have time, but don’t wait until the last minute. Remember: It’s best to allow four to five days for it to thaw. • Floral centerpieces finish off a well-set table. Florists are busy this time of year, so order flowers now. 4 Days Before Thanksgiving • Compose a shopping list, and purchase all nonperishables. Wait until the day before Thanksgiving to buy salad greens, fresh bread, or seafood. • If you’re baking pies for dessert, make the dough for the crust, roll it out, lay it into pie plates, and freeze. • Start defrosting the frozen turkey in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Plan ahead to allow a full day for every 4 pounds of turkey being thawed. 2 Days Before Thanksgiving • Homemade stuffing often calls for stale bread; cut and cube the bread now, and set the cubes out in a single layer on a baking sheet. • If using cloth napkins or tablecloths, iron them now. • Make the cranberry sauce; a couple of days in the refrigerator will give the flavors time to develop. • Prepare the serving pieces, plates, flatware, glasses, etc. 1 Day Before Thanksgiving Defrost pie dough; assemble and bake pies. Make the giblet stock for the gravy. Make the vegetables and side dishes that require baking, such as casseroles, and reheat them tomorrow; or assemble them today, and cook them right before dinner. Peel the potatoes, and then refrigerate them in a pot of cold water. Pick up the fresh turkey from the market. Prepare the stuffing, but leave out any raw eggs until you stuff the bird. Set the table tonight or first thing in the morning. Thanksgiving Day • Remove the turkey from the refrigerator, and allow it to sit for 1 hour at room temperature. • Preheat the oven, and stuff the turkey. • Put the turkey in the oven, basting it every half hour. • Chill the white wine. • Make the mashed potatoes. Closer to dinnertime, place them in a heat-proof bowl and set them at the back of the stove over simmering water. • Whip the cream for the pie; prepare the coffee, but do not brew it until about 20 minutes before it will be served. • Check the temperature of the turkey at the thigh, which is the thickest part. If the thermometer reads 165 degrees, remove the turkey from the oven. If not, check the temperature every 15 minutes until the bird is done. • The turkey will need to sit for 30 minutes prior to carving. Take advantage of the break to make the gravy and any lastminute vegetables. Remove stuffing from bird; transfer to a baking pan. • Bake until stuffing reaches 165 degrees. • Call everyone to the table. 6 The River Run Reporter NAPERVILLE NEWCOMERS AND NEIGHBORS CLUB A Social Club for New and Established Residents Invites you to our Welcome Coffee Monday, Dec. 7th 11:00 a.m. Naperville Municipal Center 400 S. NOT your “TYPICAL” Real Estate Agent! Call Jeff Today at 630-865-8530 to Find Out Why! Top "20" Re/Max Residential Real Estate Broker in Northern Illinois 2013 and 2014 Top "20" Residential Real Estate Broker in Will County 2013, 2014 & 2015 Here is What Past Clients Have to Say! Jeff Stainer is by far the best realtor I have ever come across. I read the other gushing reviews of Jeff here on Zillow, and my wife and I feel exactly the same way. He knows the local market very well and I could not imagine a more responsive agent. He almost always answers calls, and in the very rare instances when he can't, he returns the call within the hour. Sometimes, I wonder if the man ever sleeps. He truly does work HARD to get your home sold at a good price. There were several times when my wife and I wanted to reduce our asking price, but amazingly, Jeff convinced us not to, forsaking an easier selling opportunity. He does what is best for his clients, not himself. Believe it or not, I've actually told him that he is working too hard for his clients. Along with being a great and very professional real-estate agent, he is just a nice human being. He instantly becomes a part of the family. As happy as we are to have sold our home, we are going to miss working with Jeff. You will not ever regret choosing Jeff to represent you. Bala and Alamu R., Naperville I don't think I've met a person who has worked harder than Jeff did on helping us buying our family home. We were referred to Jeff by a friend and after placing our first phone call to him, he was over at our townhouse within 24 hours for our initial meeting. Jeff treated us like old friends though we had not met him and we knew right away we were in good hands. Jeff worked around the clock for us and always responded to any phone call, email or text we had within an hour. Most often he was reaching out to us first so we were never behind in what was going on. Our purchase was not an easy one (issues not relating to realtor), but Jeff handled them with flying colors. He wouldn't take no for an answer if we came across a roadblock and did not give up until we got what we wanted. There is no question in my mind that we would not have gotten the house we did if it were not for Jeff. I cannot say enough good things about him. My spouse and I are so pleased and grateful for Jeff! His work ethic is incomparable. Jim and Katie C., Naperville Recipient of the Five Star Real Estate Agent Award 5 Years in a Row! Here at the clubhouse, we had many new upgrades and changes from new pool furniture to the Grand Opening of the Bistro Café, which offered an expanded menu, grilled items and lots of specials during the week. The rear of the Clubhouse received a face lift with a new coat of paint as well as brand new banquet chairs for events inside the clubhouse. The cabana poolside along with both gazebos made their day view where members and guests were able to enjoy the outdoor pool within in a few feet of the water. Our newly remodeled Lounge Room was completely redone from floor to ceiling with new furniture and entertainment center and hosted River Run’s “first” Football Tailgate Party earlier in September. The men’s steam room will be receiving a make-over during the month of November as we are continuing our upgrade of the clubhouse facility. All of these upgrades and improvements took place without any additional assessment to the club membership. Speaking of events, with the holidays quickly approaching, you may want to book your special family or business event as the function space in the clubhouse is filling up quickly. With that in mind, I have a special offer to any full equity member for the upcoming holiday season. I will offer a 50% reduction in rental fees for any Clubhouse event room which is rented on Monday through Thursday from November 1 to December 30, 2015. Please keep in mind that the Club is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. N With my staff and I at the clubhouse to assist in servicing your guests during the event as well as the set up AND clean up, you will be able to really enjoy the holidays with family and friends. Just be sure to contact Chris or myself at the clubhouse to confirm the specific day, date and time for your event. Looking forward, holiday decorations for the clubhouse will begin on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving as the staff and I have a few surprises in store for the make-over of the clubhouse as we get ready for a visit from Santa on Sunday, December 13 and Sunday, December 20. Actual times and activities for this event will be posted in the email blast which is sent every Tuesday afternoon on a weekly basis. This email blast is an excellent way for all of the members to be updated as to the events and times of any future events. In regards to emails, the staff at the clubhouse will be contacting all equity members to update the club information such as email addresses and home phone numbers for our 2015 files. Please keep in mind that this information is for River Run Clubhouse business only and the information is not made available to outside venues. As the 2015 fiscal year for the River Run Club comes to a close on October 31, 2015, the Board of Directors and myself will be reviewing fiscal year 2015 and working on the 2016 fiscal year to be presented at the Annual Equity Membership Meeting in January 2016. The goal of the Board of Directors and myself is to continue to provide the high standards of service which the membership has become accustomed to receiving while making upgrades whenever needed. As I stated in the opening of this newsletter, this is a perfect time for me to reflect and be thankful to work alongside a staff that is truly dedicated and committed to serving the membership as well as a Board of Directors that truly cares about the well being and comradery of it’s members. But most of all, to serve a membership that promotes a sense of community involvement in a friendly environment is motivation to keep reaching for the stars! Looking forward to seeing everyone real soon.
