Today, the bond between Swarovski and water has deepened further, as can be seen in many of the projects at the company. The best-known program is the Swarovski Waterschool, which has been a remarkable success story since its introduction at the Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria in 2000. Since then, four further Swarovski Waterschools have been set up: along the Ganges in India in 2006, the Yangtze in China in 2008, the Nile in Uganda in 2009, and the Amazon in Brazil in 2014. The Waterschool’s objectives are educating children on the principles of sustainable water use and enabling communities to solve their waterrelated challenges as well as to contribute to a world where all people have access to safe and reliable water and adequate sanitation. They learn how to use water sustainably and, in so doing, how to promote the responsible use of this precious resource. The Waterschool program is financed by Swarovski, the company, as well as by the Swarovski Crystal Society (SCS) and its 300,000 members worldwide. Swarovski Wattens One of the main reasons for the foundation of Swarovski in Wattens, Austria, in 1895 was the hydropower energy potential of the Inn and Wattenbach rivers. Today, over 50 percent of energy needed at the production plants in Wattens is supplied by hydropower produced on-site. Water is not only essential to generate electricity though; it also plays an important role in the company’s production processes of grinding and polishing.
