SAQA: Deeply Rooted
Juried by Kathyanne White
Co-curated by Pat Kroth, Karin Gundlach,
Cynthia Lewis, Cythia Wenslow, and Rebecca Kemble
Quilts in this exhibit interpret the concept of
being “rooted” somewhere in life or geography,
particularly on the soil of the American Midwest.
The theme is explored in both abstract and
representational ways, showcasing both art and
traditional quilts. Works come from SAQA
members in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and
Wisconsin. This exhibit makes its debut in Chicago.
A Century of Style
A selection of antique quilts made in both France
and the United States between 1760 and 1860.
Examples include a French Boutis quilt,
Medallion quilt, and Compass quilt to name a
few. This exhibit makes its debut in Chicago.
3
Modern Quilt Guild Drunkard’s Path
This exhibit features Modern quilt-style interpretations of the popular traditional Drunkard’s
Path curved block. The quilts here were made by
members of Modern Quilt Guild chapters in the
Midwestern U.S. and Canada. This exhibit makes its
debut in Chicago.
Quilts: A World of Beauty
Presented by the International Quilt Association
A stunning array of prizewinners from the recent
annual judged show of the International Quilt
Association. Here is where IQA members around
the world send their best work to compete. In
2015, $94,250 in cash, non-purchase prizes were
awarded in more than 20 categories.
EXHIBITS

(77" x 79") by Vel Garrick.
From the special exhibit “Tactile Architecture™.”
Sister Nature
(24" x 18") by Pat Bishop.
From the special exhibit “SAQA: Balancing Act.”
SAQA: Wild Fabrications
In the American Tradition
Sponsored by Jennifer Day Thread Stories and Alegre Retreat
This annual exhibit seeks to honor our country’s
rich quilt making heritage. All quilts participating
in this exhibit are clearly based on a documented
20th century or earlier American design or pattern.
This exhibit showcases a world of animals both
real and fantastical. Selected artists let their
imaginations run wild, and created interesting
and unusual interpretations of animals using
unexpected or unconventional materials and
adornments, and/or unusual techniques.
SAQA: Balancing Act
Sponsored by Jennifer Day Thread Stories and Alegre Retreat
Throughout history, women have had to balance
responsibilities to community, home, and family
while pursuing other interests, jobs, or careers.
This exhibit celebrates women both throughout
history and today.
Hands All Around
In Full Bloom
Magnificent flowers have motivated artists and
gardeners for hundreds of years. This juried exhibit celebrates the tradition of floral quiltmaking
and is in memory of Helen Pearce O’Bryant,
the late mother of Quilts, Inc. Executive Vice
President Nancy O’Bryant.
Channeling Maria Sibylla
(34" x 54") by Sally Wright.
From the special exhibit “In Full Bloom.”
Textiles in Motion
This exhibit features wallhangings that are
impressionistic images of water, flowers, forests
and gardens.
Sponsored by Quilters Newsletter
Artists around the world are incorporating influences from their own cultures into their designs
and techniques. This prestigious, long-running
international showcase includes recent quilts by
talented artists from every corner of the globe.

Quilt Angels Needed!
FYI
Qualify for a halo in Quilt Heaven by becoming a Quilt Angel here on earth! You’ll gently
handle the special exhibit quilts as a “white
glove” guardian—protecting quilts from being
touched by eager fingers and showing them to
visitors who want to see the back or examine
details during show hours.
Three hours of volunteering earns you a specially designed Quilt Angel pin. If you volunteer for six or more hours, you will receive both
the pin and priority/early mailing on next year’s
class catalogue before the general public.
Any quilt lover can volunteer. Check the Quilt
Angel space on your enrollment form, and
you will be contacted by Festival’s Quilt Angel
coordinator for scheduling. Or e-mail

IQA
INTERNATIONAL
QUILT
ASSOCIATION
Q
I
A
The International Quilt Association—
A Worldwide Network of Quilters!
The popularity of quilting
has exploded in both
number of quilters and
amount of time and
money that they dedicate
to their passion. And there’s only one organization that promotes and supports that art
form with members from all over the planet:
The International Quilt Association!
The International Quilt Association (IQA)
is the world’s only 501(c)(3) non-profit
quilting organization that promotes the
appreciation and art of quilting around
the world.
In 1979, the four founders—Karey Patterson
Bresenhan, Nancy O’Bryant, and their mothers, Jewel Pearce Patterson (1910-2002) and
Helen Pearce O’Bryant (1914-2005)—set out
to create a group that would bring together the
varied factions of the quilt world.
Quilt collectors, teachers, artists, retailers,
suppliers, and just plain quilt lovers have all
joined IQA to help further its goals and
form a sense of community—and you can be
a part of it!
Members receive IQA’s online quarterly
journal, Quilts…A World of Beauty, featuring
informative articles, interviews, book reviews,
organizational news, a Teacher’s Directory,
Judged Show winner profiles, and scores of
stunning, full-color photos of quilts from all
over the world.
You also receive special privileges at both editions of International Quilt Festival (Chicago
and Houston) unavailable to non-members.
This includes a Preview Night entrance (and
extra hours) and a private photo opportunity
in Houston, one additional day’s free admission at all shows, a chance to enter your quilt
in the annual Judged Show, “Quilts: A World
of Beauty” or apply for a grant.
And best of all—you get to keep your awardwinning entry, since IQA’s awards are not
purchase prizes! In 2015, total prize money
awarded was $94,250!
THE 2016 RAFFLE QUILT
On the enrollment form in this catalogue, you
can purchase chances to win the 2016 IQA Raffle
Quilt, Fiesta Stars. It’s an original effort by
Dianne Thomas and Peg Pennell. Tickets are $1
each, and the winner will be drawn at the end of
Houston Festival on November 6, 2016 (winner
need not be present).
So become a card-carrying member of IQA today!

same color as A, and Fabric D—one med-light to light in the same color as B; two FQs of med contrast (a batik and a mottled solid work well for this exercise, or a multicolored hand dye and a monochromatic hand dye); FQ of a Hin to 1in wide even stripe (both colors are exactly the same width—
