Notes from Terrie Berentsen, Executive Director,
Madrone Hospice, Inc.
January was the first month we presented to our community a program called Stories for Hospice. We had
three great guest speakers, Tana Gliatto, Judy Grensted and Lorie Miller, all of whom relayed their personal
stories and experiences with losing a loved one and the help they received both during and after their loss from
Madrone Hospice.
This event was highly attended from our Siskiyou County community and interestingly enough, the audience also participated in
telling some of their own stories they themselves experienced with Madrone Hospice. This open forum also allowed participants to ask
any and all questions regarding hospice and the services we provide.
We plan to present Stories of Hospice on a quarterly basis and have different special guest speakers at each one. Our goal is to educate
all of Siskiyou County regarding the benefits of being supported by our hospice program for both the patient and their families, to
understand the benefits of having a concrete discussion with ones family about end of life wants and don’t wants, to help our
community understand the purpose of and obtain their “advanced directives” and provide a safe place for families to ask their
questions and gather information.
We are excited to continue to provide quality, compassionate care to all we serve and to help educate Siskiyou County. So, keep an eye
out for our “Save the Date” postcard for our next Stories for Hospice. We look forward to seeing you there!!
A message from Board President Catey Olivolo, FNP-C, Madrone Hospice, Inc.
Don’t wait to talk about Hospice…….
It’s an all too common situation….
A family is at the bedside of a loved one who is seriously ill and nearing the end of life. Each member of the
family has a different idea of what should be done and what the patient would have wanted.
Far too many people wait until they are in the midst of a health care crisis before thinking about what options are available or what
care they or a their loved ones would have wanted. Hospice professionals deal with these challenging situations every day – that’s
what they are trained to do.
When a family is coping with a serious illness and a cure is no longer possible, hospice provides the type of care most people say they
want at the end of life: Comfort and Dignity. Considered to be the model for high-quality, compassionate care, pain management, and
support for emotional and spiritual side of end of life process. Care is provided by an inter-disciplinary team of professionals and
trained volunteers. The wishes of the patient and family are always at the center of care.
Most hospice care is provided in the home—where the majority of Americans have said they would want to be at this time in their life.
However, care is also provided in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and the Madrone House.
The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization reports that more than 1.58 million people received care from our nation’s
hospices last year.
Hospice providers can help with information about care options and choices to ensure you live as fully as possible throughout your
entire life. They will make sure your loved ones receive support as well. One of the best ways to make sure you and your loved ones
benefit fully from hospice, should you ever need this care, is to talk about it before it becomes an issue.

Highlighting our Volunteers
Here at Madrone Hospice, volunteers are a crucial part of our organization. Without them,
many of the services we provide could not exist. We would like to thank these dedicated
individuals by highlighting a volunteer from each program in every quarterly newsletter.
For those that don’t know, Madrone Hospice, Inc. not only offers the services of our
Madrone House and in home care, we offer other services as well. The Madrone Senior
Center provides a place for social gathering, lunches and transportation for seniors over the
age of 60, they also offer the Meals on Wheels program for those seniors who are home
bound. In historic downtown Yreka, we have our Hospice and Heartisan’s Shops;
specializing in gently used items and unique, handcrafted and vintage items. These
programs are mainly staffed by volunteers.
Here are our first three highlighted volunteers and what they have to say about the programs
they volunteer for….
How long have you been a volunteer for your program?
Maggie has been a volunteer with Madrone Hospice, Inc. for 7 years.
What led you to volunteer for this program?
Maggie Harris
Hospice Patient
Volunteer
Maggie began volunteering after her 31 year career with the Human Services
Department. She said it was partially because of retirement, but also because
she wanted to do something for the community.
Maggie said she chose hospice as the program to volunteer for because she wanted to give.
“These people have given an awful lot to everyone, and they are at the stage in their life
where they need somebody…..it’s very fulfilling.”
For Maggie, giving her time in patient’s homes, delivering lunches for the Madrone Senior
Program and spending time in the Madrone House is necessary and it warms her heart.
“I just don’t want somebody to be alone.”
What is the most rewarding aspect of your volunteer work?
Maggie said she enjoys meeting different people and listening to their life stories. “It’s been
an education to me.” With tears in her eyes, Maggie spoke of her fulfillment, “I do fall in love
with some of the people!”
What would you like the community to know about the program you volunteer for?
Maggie said she would like for the community to be more aware of Madrone Hospice, Inc.
and all of the programs we offer, and she would like to see more of the community involved
with volunteering as well.
The Hospice Shop
How long have you been a volunteer for your program?
96 year old Vivian Russell has been a volunteer for The Hospice Shop since 1993,
going on 21 years!
What led you to volunteer for this program?
Vivian Russell
Hospice Shop
Volunteer
Vivian was diagnosed with breast cancer many years ago. During her battle, she
learned about hospice and the assistance they could provide to not only herself but
to her family as well. Vivian was also made aware of the volunteer programs. Vivian
decided she wanted to give back and as soon as she was well enough, began to
volunteer her time at The Hospice Shop.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your volunteer work?
Vivian loves helping others and knowing that by volunteering her time at the Hospice Shop, she is
helping the entire hospice program makes her feel great. She also loves meeting new people and
making new friends.
What would you like the community to know about the program you volunteer for?
Vivian really wants to raise community awareness for the Hospice Shop and all of programs that
hospice offers. She wants people to know that hospice is a place committed to helping people.
Vivian also wants everyone to know that hospice is not always the end. She was referred to hospice
over 20 years ago and is still here at the age of 96. She wants people to not be afraid to contact
hospice and educate themselves on the programs Hospice offers.
Madrone Senior Services
How long have you been a volunteer for your program?
Frances has been volunteering with the Homebound Meals program since 1993!
Another 21 year volunteer veteran!!
What led you to volunteer for this program?
Frances Kearney
Senior Services
Volunteer
I have always wanted to volunteer, so when I retired I started volunteering. It keeps
me going and keeps me busy.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your volunteer work?
The most rewarding part of what I do is helping others and the community.
What would you like the community to know about the program you volunteer for?
Frances said she would like for the community to know how wonderful it is to have the Madrone
Senior Services program available to local seniors.
Stop in and say hi to our friendly volunteers anytime! And, if you would like to be a volunteer
for any of these programs, please call 530-842-3160 or look up our website,
www.madronehospice.org for more information.
