graphic novel award for libraries
THE
GRAPHIC NOVEL
AWARD FOR LIBRARIES
During the American
Library Association
Summer Conference
in Chicago, three
lucky libraries will win
the 2013 Will Eisner
Graphic Novel Award
for Libraries. The award
includes graphic novels
and cash stipends
that create stateof-the-art graphic
novel collections.
The graphic novels
include the 2013 Will
Eisner Comic Industry
Award-nominated
titles, all of the books
and textbooks in the
Will Eisner Library,
a $2,000 grant to
purchase additional
graphic novels, and a
$1,000 stipend to hold a
graphic novel-themed
event. The Will Eisner Graphic Novel Award for
Libraries provides three libraries with the best in
the sequential arts field.
leading librarians
have championed the
benefits of the graphic
novel format and the
comics medium to the
world’s readers. The
Will Eisner Awardnominated titles add
current work chosen
most exemplary by an
independent committee
of industry experts
which has included a
librarian since 2005.
The coveted Will Eisner
Comic Industry Award
winners are announced
each year at San Diego
Comic Con International
and are considered the
Oscars of the Comics
Industry.
The Library Award highlights Eisner’s
contributions to the comics industry and recognizes
the important role that librarians have played in the
phenomenal growth of the graphic novel format. While Will
Eisner helped to create the foundation for graphic novels,
The Library Award
was created by The
Will & Ann Eisner Family Foundation; the books
are provided by their respective publishers; and
the Brodart Company is providing shipping and
cataloging services for the winning libraries.
Please support all of these fine organizations.
Enter to win this year’s Award at Booth #2645 in the
Graphic Novel Pavilion. The three winners will be chosen
at the Graphic Novel Stage on Sunday June 30th at 3:00 PM.
Winners must be present.

About Will Eisner
Will Eisner was born on March 6, 1917,
to a poor immigrant family in Brooklyn, New
York. By the time of his death, on January 3,
2005, Eisner was recognized internationally
as a giant in the field of sequential art, a
term he coined. He was and remains one of
the most influential people in all of comics.
In a career spanning nearly 70 years — from
the dawn of the comic book to this age
of digital comics — Eisner was truly the
“Orson Welles of comics” and the “Father of
the Graphic Novel.”
A lifelong innovator, Eisner revolutionized
the comics industry in the 1940s with his
famed newspaper series “The Spirit,” and
yet again in 1978 with his acclaimed
A Contract with God, the first modern
graphic novel. Always breaking new ground
in the development of visual narrative and
the language of comics, he authored three
groundbreaking textbooks and pioneered
using comics as an educational and
instructional tool.
Eisner taught and inspired hundreds of
students and served as an inspiration and
mentor to both fledgling and veteran artists.
The comic industry’s most prestigious
honor, the Will Eisner Award—the medium’s
equivalent of the Oscar—is named
for him. Visit www.willeisner.com
