JAZZ AND HIP HOP:
A PERFECT UNION

In 1989, a new sound emerged when Gang
Starr released Words I Manifest, a song
that combined the music of Dizzie
Gillespie’s jazz standard A Night in
Tunisia, and hip hop lyrics penned by the
Boston-based group. The trend continued in
1993 when they released the Jazzmatazz
series that featured a number of collaborations with jazz icons such as Branford Marsalis,
Donald Byrd and Roy Ayers.
Throughout the 1990’s, hip hop artists continued to sample the music of well-respected jazz
musicians. US3’s Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) took Herbie Hancock’s Cantaloupe Island to
new heights. The “funky funky” recording went gold and reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Recently a new generation of jazz/hip hop artists has emerged. The annual Jazz at the Fort
concert held in early August featured Hip Hop 1942, a show produced by New York-based
Revive Music Group. It was in 1942 when Gillespie wrote Tunisia. Revive was founded by
Berklee grad Meghan Stabile as a way to “connect jazz standards to classic hip hop
anthems in a way to create community out of divergent cultures and generations.”

“What the newer generation of jazz music is doing and what we’re trying to revive is to find a
way for jazz to really have a great beat,” said Brian “Raydar” Ellis, a member of the
eight-piece group of Berklee students, alumni and faculty who performed at the concert. The
ensemble thrilled the multigenerational Jazz at the Fort crowd, “It’s just a matter of opening
up and letting the music take you there. The cross-pollination [of jazz and hip hop] now is
incredible,” said Ellis.
Last year in celebration of its fifth anniversary, Revive threw an all-star concert in honor of
the late Keith “Guru” Elam, Gang Starr’s founder and creator of a style of music that has
lasted more than two decades.

A CHANGE IN PERSPECTIVE MAKES

Sometimes I want to be coy and build your interest before I tell you exactly
how a restaurant was, but this time I want to come right out and say that my
meal at Island Creek Oyster Bar was off the chain. This uncharacteristically
blunt admission comes at the beginning of this review for a reason.
For the first twenty minutes I was in the restaurant I had the ugliest look on my
face set to hate the place. First of all, the restaurant located in the Fenway
has strong ties to Duxbury seafood. Where I grew up on the South Shore,
upper crust Duxbury was the enemy. After being told that I would have to wait
for a table, I was sent to the bar where I had to wedge myself between a
dining couple and breath down their necks to place my order. For the following fifteen minutes I heard excuse me over
and over as my fellow patrons passed by my marginalized spot on the floor.
Gray, boardwalk wood chairs, sun-baked wooden panels and bits of cork and shell on the walls only added to my bias. It
looked just like some hoity-toity, fancied up Duxbury clam house by the sea. And then I was brought to my Cadillac-sized
leather banquette seat and my perspective changed entirely. The raw bar on full display and the entire room packed with
30 to 40-something yuppies seemed like a beautiful drama put on for my enjoyment.
Things got even better when I took my first sip of the complex El Gallo ($12) cocktail made with tequila, spicy sriracha,
cucumber juice and orange juice. From there I had the most memorable item of the night. Priced like any seaside shack I
received the most luscious Ipswich Fried Clams ($15) (pictured above left) of my life. They were crisp on the outside and
so tender I dare call them creamy. From the menu that changes daily, I also selected the Heirloom Tomato Salad ($14)
seasoned perfectly with salt and aged balsamic. The pan-fried Crab Cake ($14) with grilled corn relish and avocado was
good, but not memorable. Unfortunately the house was out of the famed Lobster Roe Noodles ($27), which I hear is an
indulgent combo of short ribs, lobster and mushrooms. I was also denied the Blueberry Peach Cobbler for the same
reason. Luckily I had by then sampled the grapefruity Highland Punch cocktail ($11) and was in a forgiving state of mind.
Seated at the new Hawthorne Bar just a door down, I sipped tea and munched amazing macaroons at midnight. Pinky
raised I pronounced to my childhood best friend, “Maybe not all things from Duxbury are bad,” and she agreed.

CAMBRIDGE CARNIVAL INTERNATIONAL
Caribbean Carnival International is a colorful, festive and multicultural celebration that is rooted in African traditions.
The festival, in its 20th year, is considered a Cambridge institution and it’s the largest festival in Cambridge, attracting over
150,000 people. The highlight of the festival is a grand costume parade accompanied by rich rhythmic musicality
promoting all types of cultures. The Cambridge Carnival International will be held Sunday, September 9, 2012 from
12:00 Noon to 6:00 p.m. The parade begins at Putnam Ave. and River St., continues up River St., turns right on
Massachusetts Ave., passes the Central Square T stop then makes a left on Main St. and ends at the corner of Albany St.
in Kendall Square. The International Stage will feature Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Caribbean, Calypso, Reggae, Compa,
Punta and Salsa music. Interactive drumming, dancing and martial arts demos will be held on the Rhythm Stage from
12:00 Noon to 6:30 p.m. and activities for children ages 5 to 14 years will include face painting, stilt walking and arts and

MAHA HOMEBUYER CLASSES
MAHA HomeBuyer Classes are held monthly at a variety of locations. Graduates from the MAHA classes will receive a
certificate which will allow the participant access to a number of programs that assist first–time homebuyers. The
certificate is also a requirement for acquiring lottery property and certain mortgage products in Boston and other cities and
towns. Graduates are eligible for free one–on–one credit and homebuying counseling. The classes are 12 hours by either
