THE GREENEST
OF ALL
Accurate Dorwin windows are
easy on the environment with
more LEED (Leadership in
Energy and Design) focused
architects and builders turning
to fiberglass windows than any
other style. Unlike some
products, Accurate Dorwin
fiberglass windows are made
tough and last longer than
others in the industry. This
means fewer old windows lying
around in landfills. Even the
manufacturing process is a
step ahead with systems using
less energy to create the
company’s innovative frame
material. Altogether, Accurate
Dorwin windows are among
the greenest ways to view the
outdoors, an attribute that
comes with the assurance of
testing by the National
Fenestration Rating Council.
PROFILE & HISTORY
1959
Accurate Dorwin Co. (Dorwin Industries), a
leader in the fenestration industry has been
in the business of making the finest quality
and highest energy rated windows and
doors since 1952. Well established in Central
Canada, Accurate Dorwin Co. is dedicated
to providing exceptional customer service to
all residential and commercial customers
throughout North America.
1983
In 1983, Dorwin Industries of Winnipeg
introduced the first fiberglass window to the
world. The idea evolved from a simple
concept of using a composite material that
is thermally superior to steel, wood, vinyl
aluminum, and other materials. It was a
revolutionary idea that proved to be a
challenge. Nothing existed to fabricate the
required window profiles. As a result, Dorwin
Industries developed a new manufacturing
process now known as “pultrusion”.
Pultrusion involves saturating parallel strands
of glass fibers with resin and pulling it through
a heated die. The result is a pultruded
fiberglass profile.
• Fiberglass is paintable, stronger than vinyl,
more weather-resistant than wood, and
less thermally conductive than steel and
aluminum.
• It has a low thermal expansion and
contraction coefficient similar to glass
making it the ideal frame for most high
performance IG units.
• Fiberglass is a strong frame material ideal
to handle heavier dualpane and tripane
IG units.
• Fiberglass frame system has narrower
sightlines offering a higher ratio of glass
area (daylight) to frame area than most
conventional frame materials.

Dorwin Industries pioneered and developed
a system that combines the most
dimensionally stable window frame material
with foam insulation and high performance
IG units. This system is what Accurate Dorwin
Co. now proudly calls, “The Fiberglass
Advantage”.

ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
OF FIBERGLASS WINDOWS
The environmental impacts of windows were studied as part of the design process for the
Waterloo Region Green Home. There were eight environmental factors that were considered
when the decision was made to install windows with pultruded fiberglass frames and a high
efficiency glazing system. A comparison to aluminum-clad and vinyl-high performance windows
was made.

Materials Used
Fiberglass for window frames is made of 65 to
85% glass fibers and 15 to 35% resin. Silica
sand is melted and spun into the glass fibers.
The resin is thermoset polyester, which is a
petroleum-based alkyd containing styrene,
glycols and acids. The insulation in the
frames is expanded polystyrene. The
pultruded lineals were produced by
Omniglass of Winnipeg using fiberglass and
resin from Owens Corning. The windows were
manufactured and assembled by Accurate
Dorwin of Winnipeg. The high-performance
glazing units consisted of three panes of
glass with LOF Energy Advantage Low-E
coatings on surfaces 2 and 5, lowconductivity silicone Super Spacer from
Edgetech and two argon gas fills.
Aluminum-clad wood framed windows
require aluminum sheeting and high quality
clear lumber. Some finger-jointed lumber is
used in interior components that are not
visible once the window is installed. Vinyl
windows are made from polyvinyl chloride
and often contain steel reinforcement.
Resource Depletion
The raw material reserves for silica sand are
very large at present and are not expected
to be exhausted. Quality control concerns in
the production of glass fiber presently
preclude the use of recycled fiber and
waste is not recycled into the process
though these options are being investigated.
In-plant waste resins for fiber glass are reused and re-blended. The raw material
reserves are based on the limits of petroleum
products. The amount of petroleum is
relatively small and contributes to a durable
product that has a long life and energy
efficiency not available from other materials.
The polystyrene insulation is a petroleum
product and as mentioned above, has
1.888.982.4640 | www.accuratedorwin.com
reserves based on the limits of petroleum.
Again, a durable insulation is produced that
has advantages in energy use reduction
during the life of the window compared to
other products. Vinyl windows require a large
quantity of polyvinyl chloride resins which use
petroleum as feed stock. Wood windows
require clear heartwood for visible
components placing a strain on old growth
forests.
Emissions During Manufacture
Glass fiber production is said to be a closed
process with few emissions escaping into the
environment. Resin manufacture is also said
to be a closed process with very few
emissions in the environment. There is a
chemical risk from the resins but it is less than
that of PVC production. Expanded
polystyrene is not produced in a closed
process and some of the pentane blowing
agent and other volatile compounds are
able to escape.
The production of PVC releases petroleum
by product into the atmosphere. The
production of aluminum releases two fluorine
gasses with potent greenhouse warming
potential.
Embodied Energy
The energy intensity (18 MJ/kg) of fiberglass is
lower than that of PVC (26 MJ/kg). Fiberglass
frames are slightly heavier than vinyl but
have a lower embodied energy. Wood
windows have a lower embodied energy
but aluminum cladding increases energy
requirements significantly.
All of the components for fiberglass windows
are manufactured in North America so that
transportation energy is relatively low as
shipping distances are short. Fiberglass
window frames are extremely durable and
are expected to last the life of the house. This
5
means that embodied energy must only be
dealt with once rather than several times, as
would be the case if the windows required
replacement (as would probably occur with
other materials).
A standard double-glazed wood window
has an energy rating of -33 W/m2. The
highest triple-glazed wood window rating is 5 W/m2. Vinyl windows have similar ratings as
wood.
Energy Used During the
Life of the Windows
Ozone Depletion
There are no ozone-depleting chemicals
used in the manufacture of the fiberglass
windows. The expanded polystyrene
however, uses pentane (approximately 7%
by volume) as a blowing agent (a
greenhouse gas).
The space heating energy consumed as a
result of the windows is much greater than
the energy required to construct the
windows.
With fiberglass windows, the space heating
energy is actually an energy gain on
average. The Accurate Dorwin windows
used at the Green Home have an energy
rating (ER) of 48 for the operable versions.
This means that averaged over the four
cardinal directions and across the Canadian
climate, they gain 7.2 watts per square
meter of window over the heating season.
Accurate Dorwin Windows are listed for the
Ontario Hydro incentive program that have
a positive energy rating for an operable
model.
Environment Emissions During
the Life of the Product
Polyesters and keytones will off-gas for some
time after fiberglass is manufactured. The
painted finish on the surface of the frames is
however expected to reduce the rate of
emission. Vinyl windows and to a lesser
extent, wood windows, also have emissions.

Summary
Table 1 summarizes how the three window frame materials compare in addressing the eight
environmental issues. Energy use was considered to be the most important environmental factor.
From this analysis, it was found that fiberglass windows have the lowest overall environmental
impact. The energy efficiency and long life of fiberglass windows significantly reduces the need
for purchased energy, which means that their impacts on resource depletion and embodied
energy are also limited. The high energy use and to a lesser extent the emissions during
production of aluminum-clad, wood and vinyl windows were the principal factors working against
these products.

The Fiberglass Advantage
Strength – Pultruded Fiberglass is the strongest of all window materials. Fiberglass is eight times
stronger than PVC, over three times stronger than wood composites and 20% stronger than
aluminium.
Stability – Pultruded fiberglass frames exhibit minimal expansion and contraction in extreme
temperature changes when compared to other window frame materials. Fiberglass and glass
have similar rates of expansion and contraction which results in superior weather seal
performance over a wide range of seasonal temperatures changes, smooth window operation
and consistent alignment of the sash and frame. As a comparison PVC expands and contracts
at a rate eight times of glass.
Energy Efficiency – Pultruded Fiberglass window frames have a much lower thermal
conductivity than other materials such as aluminium. This combined with insulated frames and
sashes results in some of the most energy efficient windows in the world.
Durability – Pultruded fiberglass window frames will not bend, warp, crack, dent, rust or
corrode. Fiberglass will not corrode in coastal applications as it is impervious to saltwater.
Environmentally Friendly
– Pultruded Fiberglass window frames combined with high
efficiency insulating glass can help reduce the world’s energy consumption. Fiberglass is made
from silica sand an abundant natural resource. There is less embodied energy in fiberglass as
compared to PVC which requires gas and petrol-chemicals. Aluminium requires large amounts of
electricity and natural gas to produce and wood consumes large amounts of slow growing trees.

or compliance with such law. Products which exceed the manufacturer’s specified size limitations are not covered under
this warranty.
ALL WARRANTIES ARE SUBJECT TO THE CONDITIONS, EXCLUSIONS, DISCLAIMERS AND LIMITATIONS THAT ARE SET OUT IN
THIS DOCUMENT.
Warranty Details:
Insulated Glass – Insulated Glass Units, under normal use and service, will not fail for the lifetime of the product to the
original purchaser homeowner. If the insulated glass fails ADI will provide a replacement insulated glass unit at no charge
F.O.B. ADI’s manufacturing facility. A failed insulated glass unit is one which develops a significant obstruction of vision as
a result of film formulation caused by dust or moisture in the leaked air space caused by the failure of hermetic seal. Glass
is a construction material, small marks, scratches and spots which are not visible from viewing at a 90 degree angle under
normal viewing conditions at a minimum of 10 feet are not considered defects. This warranty is transferable to one
succeeding owner of the residence in which the windows were originally installed. The warranty period for the second
owner is fifteen (15) years from the original date of installation.
Hardware – All balancers, rollers locking mechanisms and other hardware used in our windows and patio doors will not
fail under normal use and service for the lifetime of the product to the original purchaser homeowner. All balancers and
locking mechanisms should be lubricated once a year with a silicone type spray. All sliding tracks should be kept free of
dirt and rust.
Fiberglass Screens – Are warranted for ten (10) years against rot, rust or stains under normal residential use. The
warranty does not apply to torn or ripped screens.
Colour – The coated surfaces of the windows and patio doors are designed to maintain their original colour
characteristics, however, atmospheric conditions and sun exposure may cause some fading overtime. ADI warrants that
for a period of 15 years from the date of application the coating applied will not crack, pit, peel, blister or suffer nonuniform fading or discoloration (non-uniform fading discoloration resulting from unequal exposure of surfaces to the sun
and elements is not covered by this warranty).
Optional Veneer Interior – The optional veneer interior surfaces of ADI’s windows and patio doors must be painted or
stained immediately after installation. After sealing, the veneer is very resilient, however, it is subject to permanent
damage from moisture and mildew until properly sealed. Failure to paint or stain and seal the veneer interior immediately
after installation will nullify this warranty.
Condensation – Condensation on the interior of windows and doors is a natural result of excessive moisture in the air.
Condensation does not indicate a defective product or faulty installation and is not covered under warranty. Additional
information on the causes and cures is available from Accurate Dorwin upon request.
Labour – Skilled labour required to replace or repair any defective product or product component is covered by this
warranty for five (5) years following the date of purchase unless otherwise specified. If you are located outside winnipeg,
MB, travel fees will apply.
ACCUFRAME ™ Fiberglass Door
Fiberglass Door Slabs – Accurate Dorwin shall provide a 25 year warranty to the original purchaser homeowner against
warping and delaminating of fiberglass slabs provided that the door slab is sealed on all surfaces. Within that time period
ADI will at its sole discretion, replace or repair the defective product at no charge. ADI will not be responsible for
installation or refinishing work associated with the replacement of the products deemed defective. It shall be the
purchaser’s responsibility to complete the replacement of the items deemed defective, unless the consumer chooses to
use ADI’s services for which there will be an applicable charge. Door warpage is considered a defect when the deflection
exceeds 8mm providing that the door is manufactured with standard lock and hinge preparation. Action on claims for
bow, twist, or warp may be deferred at Accurate Dorwin’s option for a period not to exceed twelve (12) months after
installation to permit the door in question to acclimate to temperature and humidity conditions. This warranty is
transferable to one succeeding owner of the residence in which the doors were originally installed. The warranty period
for the second owner is fifteen (15) years from the original date of installation.
During winter months door panels can bow due to extreme temperature variations between the interior and exterior of
the door. This is known as “thermal bow” and is not a sign of a defective product.
Exterior Door Glass – ADI will provide to the original purchaser homeowner a limited warranty for ten (10) years from
the date of purchase on all decorative, obscure, clear and Low E doorlites as well as patio door glass-sealed units.
Door Frame - All fiberglass door frames, under normal use and service, will be free from defects in material
workmanship for the lifetime of the product to the original purchaser homeowner. This warranty is transferable to one
succeeding owner of the residence in which the doors were originally installed. The warranty period for the second owner
is fifteen (15) years from the original date of installation.
Hardware - ADI will provide to the original purchaser homeowner a limited warranty for ten (10) years from the date of
purchase on hardware purchased from ADI.
Paint/Stain Finish - ADI warrants that for a period of 10 years from the date of application the coating applied will not
crack, pit, peel, blister or suffer non-uniform fading discoloration (non-uniform fading discoloration resulting from
unequal exposure of surfaces to the sun and elements is not covered by this warranty).

THIS DOCUMENT.
Warranty Details:
ACCUFRAME ™ Fiberglass Windows and Sliding Patio Doors

workmanship for the lifetime of the product to the original purchaser homeowner. The fiberglass is warranted not to
corrode, peel, rot, rust, warp, bow, twist or blister. This warranty is transferable to one succeeding owner of the residence
in which the windows and/or patio doors were originally installed. The warranty period for the second owner is fifteen
(15) years from the original date of installation.
Products installed
in corrosive or saltwater environments must be installed with our stainless steel hardware package to qualify for Warranty
coverage. All balancers and locking mechanisms should be lubricated once a year with a silicone type spray. All sliding
tracks should be kept free of dirt and rust.
Caulking – Caulking is used to seal the perimeter of the doors against air and water infiltration. Caulking is not part of
the door and therefore is not covered under this warranty.
Fiberglass Screens – Are warranted for ten (10) years against rot, rust or stains under normal residential use. The
warranty does not apply to torn or ripped screens.
Storm Doors – Storm doors are warranted to the original purchaser homeowner to be free from defects in the material
and workmanship for one (1) year after the date of purchase. ADI will not be responsible for installation, repainting, or
refinishing work associated with the replacement of products deemed defective.
Selection of Product – Selection of the appropriate Accurate Dorwin product to conform to any and all local applicable
laws, ordinances, building codes and safety requirements is the sole responsibility of the architect, property owner/and or
contractor. Accurate Dorwin assumes no responsibility in this regard and makes no warranty with respect to the use and
or compliance with such law. Products which exceed the manufacturer’s specified size limitations are not covered under
this warranty.
Non Residential Installations – This Warranty does not apply to windows or doors installed in a building not used by
individual homeowners as their primary residence, including, but not limited to buildings owned in whole or in part by
corporations, governmental entities, religious organizations, condominiums or cooperative housing arrangements. For
such intangible entities capable of an infinite life, the duration for the warranty is twenty (20 years), non transferable.

Conditions, Exclusions, Disclaimers and Limitations
Fiberglass Screens – Are warranted for ten (10) years against rot, rust or stains under normal residential use. The
warranty does not apply to torn or ripped screens.
1) No representative of Accurate Dorwin shall have the authority to change, modify or expand this warranty and any
purported modification to this warranty shall be no force and effect.
Colour – The coated surfaces of the windows and patio doors are designed to maintain their original colour
characteristics, however, atmospheric conditions and sun exposure may cause some fading overtime. Fading is a normal
part of the weathering process and is not covered under this warranty.
2) The original warranty shall not be extended by any such repair or replacement, but the original warranty shall
continue in effect and be applicable to the repaired or replaced part(s).
Caulking – Caulking is used to seal the perimeter of the windows against air and water infiltration. Caulking is not part
of the window or door and therefore is not covered under this warranty.
Installation – Accurate Dorwin specifications and installation instructions must be followed to validate this warranty.
Any installation variance not approved by Accurate Dorwin will nullify this warranty.
The warranty period
for the second owner is fifteen (15) years from the original date of purchase.
3) Accurate Dorwin reserves the right to discontinue or modify any product line. In the unlikely event that any of the
original parts or components are no longer available, Accurate Dorwin will substitute parts or components of comparable
quality.
4) Accurate Dorwin does not provide a warranty for products that have not been paid for in full.
5) This warranty covers only those material defects as specified herein and does not include defects or damage caused
by accidents, fire, flood, hail or other Acts of God, extraordinary impact, vandalism, riot or civil disorder, misuse, mildew,
damage caused by pressure washing, modifications not performed by Accurate Dorwin, abuse, localized heat which
causes excess temperature differentials, harmful fumes, vapors or chemical pollutants in the atmosphere, building
settlement, structural failure of walls or foundations or failure of product on account of building construction or design.
6) This warranty is made in lieu of all other expressed or implied warranties and extends only to the original consumer.
In no event shall Accurate Dorwin be liable for any incidental or consequential damages of any kind, or resulting from any
defects, or for any delays in performance of this warranty due to circumstances beyond its control.
7) In no event will Accurate Dorwin be liable for consequential or incidental damages. In no event will Accurate Dorwin’s
liability exceed the price paid for the affected product or component.
Certifications and Ratings – Many Accurate Dorwin products are labeled with National Fenestration Rating Council
(NFRC) ratings. NFRC ratings are based on a combination of computer simulations and physical testing of product samples.
Certifications and ratings typically apply to single products only; however certain factory-mulled or combined product
configurations may also be certified. Performance of individual products may vary and will change over time, depending
upon the conditions of use. NFRC ratings are not performance warranties. For details on NFRC Energy Performance ratings,
go to www.NFRC.org.
Registration of Warranty – In order for you to be eligible for coverage under this warranty, the attached warranty
registration form must be completed, signed and returned to Accurate Dorwin within thirty (30) days after completion of
the installation.
Transfer of warranty – The above warranties are extended only to the original purchaser. This warranty is transferable
to one succeeding owner of the residence in which the windows and doors were originally installed. The warranty period
for the second owner is fifteen (15) years from the original purchase date. Completing the attached warranty Transfer
Form and returning it to Accurate Dorwin, along with a check payable to Accurate Dorwin in the amount of $75.00 CAD,
within sixty (60) days of the date that ownership is transferred, can transfer this warranty. Failure to so notify Accurate
Dorwin will relieve Accurate Dorwin of any future obligations under this warranty.
