Markin T he Calgary Flames will mark their 27th NHL season, 28th year in Calgary, and 23rd year in the Pengrowth Saddledome during the 2007-08 season. Since their arrival in 1980, the team has captivated hockey fans with their on-ice success, including a Stanley Cup victory in 1989, while establishing a solid off-ice reputation for community involvement through millions of dollars of contributions to charitable organizations throughout southern Alberta. On May 21, 1980 Nelson Skalbania and a group of Calgary entrepreneurs consisting of Doc and B.J. Seaman, Harley Hotchkiss, Norm Green, Ralph Scurfield, and Norman Kwong announced the acquisition of the Atlanta Flames franchise and declared their intention to relocate the team to Alberta. In August, 1981 Skalbania sold his interest in the team to the Calgary contingent. The remaining six local businessmen continued to hold exclusive ownership until June 15, 1990 when Norm Green left to become owner of the Minnesota North Stars (now Dallas Stars). On August 8, 1994 further revisions to the club ownership structure saw the addition of six new investors and the departure of two of the team’s original owners (Norm Kwong and Sonia Scurfield). Subsequent changes in 2001 resulted in the current group of eight owners: N. Murray Edwards, Harley N. Hotchkiss, Alvin G. Libin, Allan P. Markin, the estate of J.R. McCaig, Daryl K. Seaman, Byron J. Seaman, and Clayton B. Riddell, who jointly control operations for the Calgary Flames, the Pengrowth Saddledome, and the WHL Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club. On October 9, 1980 in their inaugural game at the Stampede Corral, the Flames battled the Quebec Nordiques to a 5-5 tie. The team played a total of 146 league, playoff, and exhibition games at the Corral, losing only 28 regular season and four playoff games in three seasons, before moving across the street into the Saddledome in October, 1983. The Flames formally assumed management of the Saddledome on August 1, 1994 and after extensive renovations, the venue was reopened on October 25, 1995. Today, the Pengrowth Saddledome is recognized as one of the pre-eminent entertainment facilities in North America. 44 CALGARY FLAMES Jeffrey J. McCaig Clayton H. Riddell Byron J. Seaman Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman The 2003-04 season saw the launch of an exciting new red jersey as the Flames’ home sweater, while the traditional whites were worn strictly for road games. The ‘C of Red’ was revived during the NHL playoffs, and the red Flames jersey became one of the top-selling jersey launches in NHL history. With the start of the 2007-08 season, the NHL introduced the Rbk EDGE Uniform System™. Aesthetically, the new Rbk Flames jersey had minor striping changes, and shoulder patches of the Canadian and Albertan flags were added. The alternate black jersey was retired. In their 27-year history, the Flames have become a premier franchise in the NHL. They have captured two President’s Trophies for finishing first overall (1987-88, 1988-89), three Clarence Campbell Conference titles (1985-86, 1988-89, 2003-04), two Smythe Division playoff championships (1985-86, 1988-89), two Pacific Division titles (1993-94, 1994-95), and a Northwest Division title (2005-06), plus several NHL individual and team honours and numerous attendance records. The pinnacle of the team’s history was being crowned Stanley Cup champions for the 1988-89 season when they defeated the Montréal Canadiens. The Flames’ first appearance in the finals was in 1986, and their most recent in 2004, when they electrified not only the city of Calgary but captivated all of Canada with the inspirational playoff run. The Flames followed up that performance by winning the tough Northwest Division in 2005-2006 with 103 points, ranking seventh overall in the NHL and winning the William Jennings Trophy. That same year, goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff was awarded the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goaltender, while Dion Phaneuf was nominated for the Calder Trophy as the league’s best rookie. The 2007-08 season sees the team with a new head coach, Mike Keenan. Keenan joins general manager Darryl Sutter once again after having coached him and later hired him as the bench boss in Chicago. LIGHTNING 45 THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE JERSEY By Maureen McEwan T he Calgary Flames have made a serious commitment to win this year. By hiring new head coach Mike Keenan, signing top players Jarome Iginla and Robyn Regehr, and acquiring long-time NHLer Owen Nolan, the Flames are prepared for the long haul. To help them stay the course, the Flames have also introduced a new look – cuttingedge uniforms that have been designed to bolster the team’s image while enhancing performance. The new Rbk EDGE Uniform System™ is lighter, drier, and more durable than the old uniforms and will enable players to perform at their peak longer. “The jersey was designed with two ultimate goals – to increase players’ performance and to increase their safety,” says Kirby Short, Director of Sales for Reebok’s Sports Licensing division. “Reebok has developed the jersey to fit the player better; it’s been engineered to provide less drag, and the sleeker fit means it’s harder to clutch and grab.” When we talked “about the design [of the jerseys] a lot of thought went in to it. ” - Kevin Lawton Flames Director of Merchandise & Product Development Defenceman David Hale in the new Flames Rbk EDGE Uniform System™ 46 CALGARY FLAMES The new uniforms provide players with 9% less drag and 61% more core protection than their predecessors. Constructed of four innovative fabrics, the jerseys are 14% lighter (pre-game weight) and provide four-way stretch. They also feature Reebok’s new Bead Away™ water repellent technology, which helps repel liquid spilled from water bottles or excess moisture picked up from the ice. Reebok’s new PLAYDRY™ technology helps move moisture away from the body as well as the equipment, and accelerates evaporation. Combined, the new uniforms retain up to 76% less moisture, allow for greater movement, and should last nearly twice as long as the old ones. The changes, explains Short, were due. “While the players and the game itself had evolved, the uniforms hadn’t kept up.” He says the old air mesh was much heavier, and while it was durable, it offered little stretch and was very warm. “As for fit, some players were wearing bigger jerseys just to increase ventilation. The new uniforms,” says Short, “have been engineered to anatomically fit the shoulder and elbow pads, core protector, and shin guards, holding them in place while providing a much greater range of motion. Combined with the new materials and technology, the EDGE uniforms will result in an overall reduction in energy loss, allowing players to perform at a high level throughout the game.” The jersey was “designed with two ultimate goals – to increase players’ performance and to increase their safety, ” - Kirby Short Reebok Director of Sales, Sports License Division “The changes are fairly significant,” says Short, and they come after more than two years of extensive research. With input from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (wind tunnel analysis), Central Michigan University (thermal regulation analysis), the NHL, the NHLPA, and the players, the new uniforms are definitely a collaboration of expertise. Even the visual design was a long time in the making, and fifteen prototypes were considered before the final decision was made. “We really tried to incorporate ideas from a lot of different groups,” says Kevin Lawton, Director of Merchandise and Product Development for the Calgary Flames. The design team listened to input from fans as well as marketing and hockey experts before deciding on the new look. “When we talked about the design [of the jerseys], a lot of thought went into it,” says Lawton. This was particularly true of the piping, which runs vertically down the jersey and through the pants. “We really wanted to have a more intimidating road jersey,” Lawton adds. “The new piping makes the upper body look bigger and the player look faster.” While the Flames may have an aesthetic advantage, the other twenty-nine teams in the National Hockey League will also be sporting the new uniforms. Some have chosen a new design while others have maintained their previous look. Fans will undoubtedly give mixed reviews but, as the experts have maintained from the beginning, the changes were never about fashion, only about function. “The NHL players are now wearing the most technically advanced uniforms in professional sports,” says Short. And the fans are sure to notice the difference – not only in how the teams look, but in how they play the game. As well as providing a greater range of motion, the form-fitting new jerseys are more difficult to clutch and grab – as shown here when Panther Mike Van Ryn attempts to get a grip on Flames forward Wayne Primeau, on September 16, 2007. PRESIDENT & HEADING CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER K en King has a big heart, a strong handshake, and a soft spot for Calgary, the Calgary Flames and Calgary Flames fans. President and Chief Executive Officer of the Flames since summer 2001, King puts his family first. But, close behind are Flames fans who also cherish the traditions and excitement of the National Hockey League. Look for him greeting fans between periods. He is genuinely interested in what they have to say about the game and their team. King is also enthusiastic about the business of hockey and devoted to serving the Calgary community. Like you, King has enjoyed the incredible Calgary Flames journey in recent years. He appreciates a resurgence of support both inside the Pengrowth Saddledome and across southern Alberta. And he too longs for another spectacular 2003/2004-type season, the road to the Stanley Cup finals and this time – a championship. Born and raised in Hanley, Saskatchewan, King launched a 30-year career in the newspaper business that included senior executive positions in Canada’s leading newspapers including President and Publisher of the Calgary Sun and Calgary Herald. During his newspaper career in Calgary, King was acknowledged for his innovative marketing, establishment of healthy corporate relationships, spirited community leadership and appreciable growth for the newspapers. King is a strong believer in contributing to the community and he spends an enormous amount of time with community efforts. His current involvement spans numerous organizations, including co-chair of REACH (a $300 million medical fundraising initiative), the Calgary Committee to End Homelessness, the Calgary Sport Tourism Authority, the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede, Borden Ladner Gervais CIAU Athlete of the Year Awards Committee and the Rotary Club of Calgary. Previous support and commitment involved the Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre, Calgary Philharmonic Society, No Ka Oi Ranch Foundation and past-chairman of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. In 2005, King received an Alberta Centennial Medal for outstanding contributions to the province of Alberta. Other awards include the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for community service and the commemorative medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada. In 1991, he was honoured as B’Nai Brith Man of the Year. KenKING grandsons – first round NHL draft picks in 2022. He also serves as an Alternate Governor of the NHL and President & Chief Executive Officer of the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen. King is an avid but mediocre golfer and like many other Albertans, shares a passion for horses which he most often, but not always, stays mounted on. He and his wife, Marilyn, have two daughters, Amanda and Jocelin. King also has twin Flames President and CEO, Ken King, at the 2007 Calgary Flames new jersey launch at Flames Central on September 4th. Ken King addresses guests, players and media at a 2006-07 Molson Cup Luncheon. Ken poses with Flames Alumnus Jamie Macoun and his golfing teammates (low gross winners) at the 2007 Calgary Flames Celebrity Charity Golf Classic. The event raised a record $330,000 for the Flames Foundation for Life.
