I have learned a lot about the real world and how to work hard for something that I strongly desire. CAMP has eased my college transition. They not only helped me financially but academically and emotionally which are two very important factors in college. I thank every staff from the CAMP program and especially Elias Lopez for accepting my participation as a CAMP student and I thank my IEP Jose Luis Hernandez for providing resources and giving me helpful advice. CAMP staff has really demonstrated their support towards me and it has been a great honor to be a CAMP scholar. Smith Alce First of all I would like to say thank you to the CAMP program for all they have done. My experience at MSU through the CAMP program was great. They introduced me to many resources on campus and helped me throughout the year with my classes and with financial problems when I had nobody else to go to. The one thing I like most was the trip to Mexico for spring break. Even though I am thankful for what I have, going to Mexico and volunteering to help children who have less made me appreciate that I do have, a lot more. Some people might think volunteering is boring but it was actually really fun spending time with those kids. Some have disabilities and many are homeless and all they want is to spend time with us, so I encourage the future CAMP students to go. You will not have to worry about your safety neither because I am not Mexican and I do not speak Spanish and I was safe. Jovanska Almanza MSU has been a great and enlightening experience for my future. Thanks to CAMP for the financial support and services you have provided. It has really helped me enjoy the experience without the worry. I hope to pursue a lot of things and I do not know what’s in store. I hope that with so many opportunities, I will find what benefits me the most in launching my career path. Vianey Alonso The best thing I got out of my experience in CAMP was the opportunity to make some great new friendships. It has been a challenge coming to MSU without knowing anyone, but this has made the whole experience even more of an adventure. Thank you to my parents, family and friends for supporting me in this new phase of life. I look forward to the opportunities that my future degree will open for me and I hope to travel the world after I complete my education. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Arturo Barajas I would like to thank the CAMP program for helping me transition smoothly my first year at Michigan State University. Without CAMP’s support and resources, I would not be where I am now. Although not all of CAMP’s methods for helping have benefited me, a majority of the program has been an eye opener in many ways. I hope other students, going through CAMP in years to come, have the pleasure of having the same experience I have had. Randy Bautista Coming to MSU has been a great experience for me thus far. Studying here has taught me many things. I have become more mature with myself and others. I have met many people that have become very close to me and I hope it stays that way. CAMP has been a great support system and has helped me in different ways, and I appreciate it very much! Breanna Campbell-Flores Coming to MSU was extremely life changing. It was a great experience my first year. I met new people and learn a lot. The diversity was what surprised me the most. Over all I loved it. The thing I hated the most was the weather. Although it was my first time seeing snow. I am grateful for all that CAMP has done from me. Thank you so much. Andres Cardoso To summarize my freshman year at MSU, I want to thank a couple of people back home that made my school year go much smoother. Those people are my family. They kept in touch with me and believed in me; to start off on the right foot making the greatest decision I have ever made, which was to become a Spartan. Although being a Spartan will not get any easier, I want to say that even with its difficulty, being part of this university has taught me to grow personally & professionally. This is something that I probably would not have accomplished at any other place. Even so I want to thank CAMP because they opened new doors to a better future. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Jesus Cepeda My freshmen year here at MSU was great. There were times when I did not want to keep going but in the end I did. One of the greatest things this year was the amount of new friends I made. Another great experience I had this year was when we went to Merida, I do not know if I would have ever talked to the people I met there if it was not for this trip. Hope next year can be even better! Ezequiel Chapa CAMP has been an amazing experience ever since the day I got accepted. I really do owe them a lot because they believed in me and helped me through the toughest times. I want to encourage this program to continue its work and help students like me who were giving up and did not know what they wanted to do with their lives. CAMP gave me an opportunity to show the world what I am capable of doing incredible things. One person I want to thank is Isabel Montemayor, she has showed me that to live in this world we must be strong and to believe in myself. She is a very inspirational woman in my life and I know that she did not just want to help me because it was her job; she helped me because she cared. Over all I just want to thank CAMP and also thank them for tolerating me. Melissa Chavez (Michigan) My experience at MSU thus far has been phenomenal. Being here has provided me with many opportunities and achievements that I may not have had the chance to do so if I had attended elsewhere. Thanks to the CAMP Scholars Program I have been able to experience what it is to succeed as a scholar here at MSU. This program has provided me with various resources that have allowed me to succeed and efficiently transition into this top 10 university. The individuals at MSU and most importantly the CAMP advisors have been a guide throughout these two semesters. Without their help the transition to MSU would have been a greater challenge. Thank you so much to all for your support and guidance. Being not only a MSU Spartan but also a MSU CAMP Scholar has been a great experience and I look forward to continuing my academic career at Michigan State University. GO GREEN! Denise Cruz MSU was a challenge at first. CAMP really helped me adjust to a big university; I never expected to see myself in this kind of setting but once I adjusted I found things that I liked. I particularly enjoy the MSU Pavilion. I would like to thank my family because they have been very supportive! I would like to continue this journey and experience more new things. I am looking forward to the next couple of years as a Spartan. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Melissa Chavez (Florida) My experience in CAMP while transitioning to Michigan State University, this past fall, has been spectacular. It was nerve-wrecking leaving Florida, and coming to college in Michigan, but with the help of my family, friends, and advisors I was able to make my decision. Coming into a huge campus from a small town is a big change, but also an opportunity to see life from a different angle, especially at a Big Ten University. At MSU, I was able to meet wonderful people who helped with my classes and get adjusted. CAMP helped me a great deal. They we understanding, supportive, and most importantly they made me feel at home. They are a great support team and always do their best to help each and everyone one of us, in the best possible manner that they can. I am thankful to God and grateful for allowing me this magnificent experience. Karla Davila Thanks to CAMP I got experience new things, got to meet new people, and make new friends. I want to thank the staff and my friends for being there for me. Looking forward for next semester. Congratulations everyone, for surviving the first year of college! Briana DeLaRosa My experience with CAMP has definitely been life changing. Although I have been put through many hindrances my freshman year, CAMP has always been there to help me strive through my struggles and lend a helping hand through rough times. I feel like I came into this University with a family. I am amongst people who are from my background and know somewhat where I come from. I would just like to thank the CAMP program and all its members. Kassandra Garza I was born in McAllen, Texas and graduated from Palmview High School. Thanks to a great program at Michigan State called CAMP, I was able to come to a top ten school in the US despite a learning disability. I made it this far thanks to the program. If it were not for CAMP or MSU, I would not be in college. CAMP has opened my mind to the real world and I have already survived one semester with a GPA of 3.5. I am learning to depend on myself by being here in this wonderful school. I know that God put me here with these wonderful people at MSU and CAMP to guide me. For that, I want to say thank you to CAMP. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Julian Garza My experience at MSU has been unforgettable. Thanks to CAMP and my family I have been able to overcome many struggles that school has thrown at me. CAMP has allowed me to create lifetime friendships which will benefit me in the future. CAMP has also assisted me in financial situations. Overall no words can explain how appreciative I am for my family, friends, and CAMP for letting me have this opportunity. Yuriria Gonzalez CAMP has been a reliable source that I can turn to for help. I honestly think that without CAMP I would not have been able to attend Michigan State University. In my experience, CAMP has served as an excellent resource to help me network within the University along with the transitioning process. Abel Gutierrez As a MSU student and a CAMP scholar I have truly enjoyed my time at East Lansing. I have acquired valuable long term lessens while perusing a higher education. For all my success I have received I have to thank my family, friends, and the CAMP staff. Eliseo Gutierrez I have nothing to say but good things about the CAMP program. I enjoyed the summer event with all the CAMP students because it gave me the opportunity to interact with other migrant student such as myself. I appreciate the financial and familial support that CAMP provides. My IEP was very helpful in finding resources for me and assisting me in scholarships. Overall, the CAMP program does not fail you, you fail yourself- Yes I know it’s a little harsh but that is the bottom line. A little piece of advice to upcoming CAMP students is that you should not depend on the CAMP staff to do everything for you, look beyond yourself and network with other CAMP students and campus resources. CAMP gives you the tools you need to be successful, so use them. I would like to have the honor to first thank my parents (Eliseo and Maria), my oldest brother (Eleazar), my migrant counselor (Mrs. Alejos), my IEP (Andie), and the entire CAMP staff (Luis, Patty, Lily…). These individual have encouraged me to continue studying, and persisting to become active in the MSU community. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Mario Gutierrez My experience here at MSU has been life changing. I have really learned a lot about myself. The whole time I have spent here has been really cool! Florentina Hernandez At MSU, I have seen a lot of people from different places and have learned a lot. In the CAMP office, everyone is available to help me. I would like to thank Gilberto Guzman for introducing me to the CAMP program and Andie for always helping me when I needed it . Jessenia Hernandez I have had many achievements and there are many more to come. I want to thank C.A.M.P for all of the support they have provided me during my first year in Michigan State University. Coming into MSU has been a tough transition because I come from a very united family who is currently in Texas. I want to thank my family and friends because they have also been a great support system throughout this time! Jonathan Hernandez My experience at Michigan State has been an awesome adventure. I have proven to myself that this is just the beginning and have a lot more to accomplish. I have been a full time student, employee, and parent; this has motivated me to succeed. I want to thank Karla Peterkoski for giving me the opportunity to receive my GED and help guide me to CAMP I also want to thank the whole CAMP staff for all their support and help throughout the year. Special thanks to Luis Garcia & Elias Lopez. Maria Maldonado The people I would like to give thanks for all their hard work and dedication. These people have been there for me no matter what, they are my IEP Andie Gonzalez, Patty, Bruce, Luis, Rudy and Elias. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Flo, Briana, Breanna, Yuri, Jason, Karla, Chiquilla (Ebelin), Denise, Vianey, Tess, Inez and the many other friends that have stayed with me. They really are AMAZING people. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Xochitl Jaimes Being a CAMP scholar has changed my viewpoint on various aspects. I am knowledgeable of the dedication it takes to accomplish academic success at MSU. Starting my first semester at MSU I was able to manage all of my classes, work at Spartan Linen Center, and volunteer at Wonderbodies. I have persistently worked with the CAMP staff asking for their precious help which I am thankful for. I am satisfied with my first year at MSU and proud to be part of a unique program like CAMP. Jesus Leyva My first year as a MSU CAMP student has been amazing and memorable. I have had many experiences and grown as well. To all the CAMP staff thank you for all you have done to help my fellow scholars and myself. I have received assistance from everyone I have asked and always with a positive attitude. Especially MY girl Lily!!! Who has done a wonderful job giving me advice! I am glad I came to MSU but mostly that I came through CAMP and was able to meet so many new people! Taylor Lohstroh My experience at MSU has been like a rollercoaster ride. My first semester was a downer, I was not doing well academically and felt like I did not belong in college. Thankfully, Isa Montemayor and Karla Peterkoski helped me feel a part of the CAMP family again and encouraged me to do anything. This semester is fantastic, I am doing great in class, feel more open, a part of CAMP and MSU, and that is thanks to ALL of the CAMP staff. They helped me and answered all of my questions no matter how insignificant they were. Special thanks to Elias Lopez for being my IEP, and for helping me through the process and applying to MSU. Also, special thanks to Luis Garcia for accepting my family and I into CAMP and for sticking to and pushing me to succeed, in a school that was meant for students to fail. I will succeed and I will prove that you made the right choice in choosing me. Gilberto Martinez What I like about MSU are all of the free services that are available. Having these services within close walking distance has been wonderful. I love the history of the school and the pride it gets in your head. I like how CAMP provides the support to keep us on track. I can share my problems and I love the friendly atmosphere in the office. That support is just a phone call away. I would like to thank my advisor Isa, and also Elias for giving me the opportunity to come up here. If it were not for making that phone call then I would not have had this experience. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Elizabeth Mendez My first year at Michigan State has been an awesome experience for me. I am happy to have met all these new people and friends I made through CAMP. I want to thank the staff for doing all of what they have done. If it was not for them I do not know where I would be right now. I like all the little things they did for us like giving out awards (Student of the Month, Dean’s List) and the little birthday celebrations. I really do appreciate everything and thank you. Adrian Mendoza Exciting, fun, hard work, dedication and commitment are only a few of the many words that can describe my experience as a freshman at MSU. I am proud and honored to be part of the 2011-2012 CAMP program; I strive to make the best out of my college experience and to do the best possible on my part to succeed. I would like to thank all of the CAMP staff including IEP advisors for all of their support and for making this transition possible. I also cannot forget my family, who have helped me every step of the way. Joanna Mendoza After all the struggles and conflicts I had to go through, I was still able to make many accomplishments. I appreciated the support I received from CAMP through this transition. Also, having a very supportive family really helped me through this time. I cannot wait to come back next year! Rebecca Mezquitic I loved being in CAMP, they were so helpful when it came down to me needing anything extra. They went above and beyond to help me even when I did not think I needed it. I am happy I got to be a part of this experience and it just made my freshman year here at MSU that much better. Thanks again to everyone! Juan Mier Being a Camp Scholar here at Michigan State University has helped me greatly to finish my first year of college. They have been a support system to me, and has helped me get through problems that I had. I am very fortunate that I had the Camp team behind me to help me out at times. I am still learning the ropes here at State, but I know I have people that will help me get through my hard academic times. Being figuring out my courses or financial aid problems they are their to lend you a hand. The Camp organization is a great organization that will help you to their best ability to help you graduate, and receive a degree. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Angel Montalban My experience of being in Michigan State University has been one full of growth, great times, and countless nights of late studying. I have made many friends from all over the world; from people in the U.S to people from Japan, Taiwan, China, and Vietnam. There were many social activities from which I thrived on, from the late night life to a simple walk around campus. Overall my first semester has been fun and exciting. Martin Munoz As a current CAMP student, I would like to state that the CAMP program, is and was an amazing experience. From camping at Sherman Lake to AOP, it was a once in a lifetime experience. With the help of my IEP, Andie Gonzalez, the transition from high school to college was a lot smoother to handle. Without the help of CAMP, I would not have someone constantly looking after me. Christiann Ruby Nunez The main thing I like about MSU is the diversity. CAMP has helped me with my classes and answered my questions. They have given me good advice. I want to thank my family, friends and the CAMP staff for helping me get through this first year at Michigan State. Thank you everyone for believing in me and for your support. Jessica Olvera Coming into Michigan State as a CAMP scholar was an exciting new experience for me. I was not sure about what to expect, but I soon realized what this was all about. CAMP definitely opened many doors for me, from scholarships to internships and workshops to improve our professional skills. But not everything was workshops and meetings I enjoyed many of the fun activities they organized for us such as welcoming cookout and Halloween party. They not only opens doors for you but also brings great friendships. The best advice that I can give you is to take advantage of the opportunities they offer! Benito Perez My first year at Michigan State would not have been the same without CAMP. The program has been a huge help, both academically and financially. The staff were always there for me when I needed simple advice or reassurance about classes. Without CAMP, my freshman year would have been a completely different experience. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Leonel Ornelas-Martinez Dear CAMP staff, I would like to thank you all for giving me the opportunity to be a CAMP Scholar. If it were not for CAMP I would probably not be here today. CAMP has been there for me in the good and bad moments. Their support is there whenever you need it. They have supported me financially in several ways through stipends, grants, and paying for my books. CAMP has done a lot for me and for that I am very thankful! Jason Perez My name is Jason Perez and I am a Music Major here at Michigan State University. Thank you for your support. Maria Perez Being a CAMP scholar has opened many doors for me, which have enabled me to meet new people and made me aware of all the opportunities that can lead to success. I want to give thanks to those who have supported me in every way possible: my family, friends and teachers. Without the tremendous amount of support, I would not have been able to follow my dreams. The path to accomplishing my dreams is slowly unfolding at my feet. Thank You! Yadira Perez My experience at Michigan State University has absolutely been a rollercoaster. Having to leave to a university across the country away from my loved ones caused emotional stress but in the long run taught me adulthood. Here I have met incredible people, become more knowledgeable and been exposed to different situations. I would not have been able to survive my freshmen year at such a huge university without the support and guidance from CAMP, my academic advisor, close friend Viridiana and most importantly my parents and God. I will never regret my decision of having become a MSU Spartan. Laura Ramirez My freshman year at Michigan State has been full of new adventures and experiences. Some of them have changed who I am for the better. The CAMP program has helped me with achieving my main goal, furthering my education. They are giving us the opportunity to study abroad in order for us to get a better understanding of how different some people’s lives are. They have helped with my transitioning to college and have always reminded us to not give up. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Alma Ramirez My first year experience at Michigan State University cannot be put into words. All the new experiences, laughs, memories, friends, and hard work, will always be unique to each and every one of us students. I came to MSU with a clean slate. Coming in and not knowing a single person here, challenged me to get out of my bubble, encouraging me to talk to and get to know other students that were in the same position I was in. My transition into college was a little easier than most typical college freshman transitions are. With the help of CAMP I was helped out tremendously. The CAMP staff was always there when I was facing any kind of problem or had questions. Walking into their offices, you instantly knew they cared. They would take precious time out of their hectic schedules to just sit down and listen to us. The staff helped me and many other students financially and emotionally. Being in a program like this has helped me out immensely. Throughout this year, I have met some of the most uplifting and motivating people who have pushed me and every single one of us to keep working hard and moving forward. I have grown as a person and a student. My ways of communicating and thinking have changed for the better. I have become more professional in a way. One of the most important things I have learned this year is to NETWORK! I have learned that it is crucial to get myself out there. Never shy away from talking to a professor or a recruiter. You yourself are in charge of your own future! Overall, I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to be in CAMP and the staff involved in making this a great experience. Maria Ramirez Thanks to the CAMP program, I got the opportunity to attend a big 10 university. I was also given the opportunity of studying abroad, which was definitely a life changing experience. I met a lot of new people and many of them; I know will be lifelong friends. It’s nice to have a support system there besides friends and family. I’m thankful for all the support and opportunities that I got from the staff and the CAMP program during my first year here at MSU. Edgar Reynoso First of all I want to send thank Elias and Peter, for informing me about Michigan State University and the CAMP program back in my senior year of high school when they were recruiting students. I never thought such experience as separating from my family and finding a new one would ever happen, until I found CAMP. This program, not only the staff as well as the other students, have given me strength to overcome issues that I dealt with over the semester. The program served in anything that we needed for. I am really thankful to have been part of it, and hopefully in a near future my younger brother decides to come to MSU so that he can be part of the program as well. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Erika Rios Well, MSU has been a huge transition and has changed my life in a variety of ways. Being independent and accountable for my own schedule has helped me grow as a person and become more responsible. Through CAMP I met new people and gained access to resources that were beneficial to my studies. Special thanks to Patty for helping with my health insurance. With the help of God and my family, I am looking forward to getting my degree in special education. Andres Rodriguez My name is Andres Rodriguez. I am from Grand Haven, Michigan. I am thankful for the opportunity that CAMP has given me to be a part of this program. I had a great experience this first year at MSU and I am looking forward to the rest of my college years. Ebelin Rodriguez Michigan State University is a new experience and I have met a lot of people. It has given me an opportunity to grow and adapt to new environments. I have come to realize that there is huge number of career opportunities available to me. With all the resources that MSU provides, I am confident that this school will help me succeed. Tess Ruiz My experience as a freshmen had its ups and downs. CAMP was there for me and helped me become a better student when things got difficult they were a helping hand. I had the support of family, friends, and teachers, who helped me get to where I am today. I would not be who I am without all the encouragement I received and for that I am thankful! Guadalupe Serrata Guadalupe, also known as GJ, is currently studying Criminal Justice. He is from Mission, Texas and is a graduate of Palmview High School. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Freshmen Students Myriam Salas I am originally from Mercedes Texas and heard about the CAMP program through previous visits to MSU. I was overwhelmed and excited when I got accepted to MSU and CAMP. Since I have been here, it has been a life-changing experience and an experience I thought I would never have. I had many challenges that have made me a better person. CAMP is a great opportunity for migrant students and a great step to fulfill my dreams. Never give up and overcome your obstacles. Thanks CAMP staff for helping and giving me this opportunity. Go Green! Go White! Inez Sanchez My experience at MSU was overall amazing. The new environment and people have taught me a lot. Even though I went through my ups and downs I wouldn't change a thing. It has taught me independence, and social skills. I am very grateful for the opportunity I received. Thank you CAMP and my supporting family for helping me get through my first year of college. Omar Tenorio-Leyva You only live once, that’s what I have heard and I am glad I came to MSU. CAMP has treated me well, freshman year has flown by but it has been a great time! It gave me the opportunity to experience study abroad and enjoy the true college life. I am and will always be a Spartan! Oscar Tenorio-Leyva My experience at MSU has been great, very different from anything I' have encountered in the past with school and life. I am grateful to be part of the CAMP program and the experience I believe has given me a head start and the confidence to do great at MSU. I would like to thanks the CAMP staff, my family, and friends! Josue Torres Being a CAMP student has been a wonderful experience. This program has helped me financially and mentally; I am proud of this program. I want to thank Luis Garcia, Rudy Ramos and Isabel Montemayor for giving me this great opportunity. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY MSU CAMP Students Deyra Tijerina In the beginning I encountered many problems with CAMP, but I do have to say they helped me grow as a person. My first year experience was life changing. I learned to defend myself when others wanted to jump on top of me; I learned to speak for myself, and to fight for what I want because no one else is going to do it for me. Do not let anyone illustrate life as peaches and roses, because reality is not like that. Life is hard as heck but you just have to give it your all and keep on moving forward. Salvador Valdez I have enjoyed my new educational surroundings. The experience at MSU is different from where I grew up. CAMP has given me a good foundation to get started and provided a good stepping stone to continue with my education. I would like to thank everybody in my life that has helped me on this journey. Liza Velez Coming to MSU was a big move starting college was a bit nerve racking but CAMP helped ease things up a little. CAMP was very helpful within my first year of college; it was nice to know that I had an IEP advisor whom I can go to for questions about classes, among other things. Joshua Zerrato I like MSU; I made a lot of friends. The classes are challenging, but I expected that. Despite being far away from Texas, CAMP made me feel like I was home. They have assisted me a lot. I would like to thank my family. They have helped out a lot and they were very supportive of me coming. In fact, all of my friends and relatives have been very supportive. I would like to experience a lot more of what this campus has to offer; the first year was just a little taste of MSU. I look forward to graduating from State. I am proud of who I am and where I come from. The CAMP program was an opportunity that changed my future. The CAMP program has supported me greatly in this journey and in May 2012 it will be four years since I left my sunny state. My advice to the continuing CAMP students is to work hard to create a better future, be a role model for other minorities, and NEVER give up on your hopes and dreams. This is a once in a life time opportunity so take it seriously, work and study hard and you too will succeed. Remember what you are here for, our priority is your degree, everything else is secondary. I can proudly say when I cross that stage in May I will break many stereotypes and beat the odds! Thanks to God, my family, and CAMP who have supported me on this journey to success. I never expected to be in Michigan State and earn good grades but I made the choice and never gave up. My hard work is finally paying off. I will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in political science pre-law as well as a minor in women and gender studies. I plan to apply to law school in the Fall in hopes of becoming a family/immigration attorney. "For every one of us that succeeds, it's because there's somebody there to show you the way out. The light doesn't always necessarily have to be in your family; for me it was teachers and school" (Oprah Winfrey). "The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work"(Oprah Winfrey). Michigan State University MSU CAMP GRADUATES 2012 Dulce Cardenas Bachelor of Arts, Psychology - Summer 2012 CAMP has provided me with vital opportunities to become the person I am today. Thanks to CAMP I have gained a chance to see the world, mentor, and experience diversity at a whole new level. Through this process I developed life-long friends. Freshman year was a very important juncture in my college career and CAMP was always there to help me find my way. Mercedes Chavez Bachelor of Arts, Social Work - Spring 2012 “Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” The time I have spent as a CAMP student as well as a Michigan State University scholar has been a great learning experience. I am very happy to say that I am the second in my family to graduate from MSU. I would like to thank one special person that touched my life and was there for me when I needed emotional support and someone to share my stories. Patricia Joly, thank you Patty for helping me when I needed a mother figure and guidance. Most importantly I would like to thank my Family, for being there for me and supporting me. Attending a big ten university, I was challenged and put to the test among other students. I had to prove to everyone that I could graduate and not be another statistic. Now I am excited to see that all of my hard work is being acknowledged. Thank you CAMP for giving me the opportunity of my life! Michigan State University MSU CAMP GRADUATES 2012 Micaela Flores Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science-Community Relations; Chicano/Latino Studies - Spring 2012 Just a few years ago, I walked through the doors of Holden Hall to begin a journey I will never forget. I came in through the HEP program which led me to the CAMP program and ultimately to find my passion for a meaningful career. I chose a major that broadly focuses on inequality and became involved with groups and projects that directly exposed me to social and educational upward mobility for underrepresented groups. Throughout my collegiate career, I have been trained and educated in areas that deal with an array of social issues and I plan on using the skills I have acquired to help tackle these issues. I have the utmost appreciation for those influential and supportive individuals who helped me in my journey. I will begin with my family, especially my brother; Juan Flores, the HEP and CAMP staff who made it all possible; special thanks to Luis Garcia, Paty Joly, Karla Loebick, Elias Lopez and Paul Hernandez, the OCAT office staff who helped build my leadership skills; Murray Edwards, Meaghan Kozar, Mary Phillips, Rob Biddle and Leslie Galvez, the CLS faculty and staff provided endless insight and support; especially Dr. Sheila Contreras and Dionicio Valdes. Last but certainly not least my sisterhood, The Phenomenal Women of Delta Tau Lambda Sorority, Inc., provided the most empowering experience of my life. Thank you all for you have made me better, wiser, smarter and stronger! Martha Garcia Bachelor of Arts, Communications - Spring 2012 I want to thank the CAMP program and its staff for opening the doors and making the office a home away from home. Even though I only live one hour and half away, whenever I needed anything a talk, hug, advice to laugh a little or even to cry the CAMP staff was always there to help me with my issues. I personally want to thank Elias Lopez; he has been a great mentor and great friend. I can go up to him to chat or talk business. Elias has a power with words that have helped me through these long years in college. I have had the opportunity to travel, visit and meet so many people on and off campus. Thanks to the great opportunities Michigan State has to offer I leave with great friends, memories, connections and lessons that no book can teach. For future students I advise them to travel, leave your comfort zone meet as many people as possible. Enjoy every moment in this great university. Michigan State University MSU CAMP GRADUATES 2012 Cassandra M. Gonzalez Bachelor of Science, Packaging - Fall 2012 Just two years ago I walked the premises of this campus for the first time never thinking it would be the University I would walk to receive my Bachelors Degree. I remember like it was yesterday when two years ago in High School I had to make one of the most difficult decisions of my life and choose between Universities but somehow I ended up here. It was very difficult adjusting the first year I won’t lie; I remember regretting choosing Michigan State throughout my first year. It took me a while to realize God does things the way he does for a reason. Michigan State gave me an experience I would have not obtained elsewhere and I appreciate every bit of it. God, my parents, my family, my friends, and of course everyone in Migrant Student Services (Luis, Rudy, Elias, etc.) are the reason why I am where I am today. I cannot say that I have had the full college experience in two years but can definitely say it has been an experience like no other and I will take with me forever. This is only the beginning - Thank You So Much from the bottom of my heart. Rolando Gonzalez Bachelor of Arts, Sociology - Fall 2012 My journey to Michigan State began exactly nine years ago when I first set foot on this campus to drop off my brother Pedro as he began his journey. Back then, I never thought of the difficulties, immense dedication, hard work or perseverance that would be required to complete the journey of a Spartan. Now, through my own work, tears, dedication and adversities, I prepare for the next phase of my life as a future Alum of our Alma Mater. Go Green, Go White! This journey is not only impossible but rather unimaginable without the help of the numerous outstanding people who not only helped me get through this experience but rather are lo que compone mi corazón, soul and mind. They are the reason why I am who I am today, and I will forever be grateful. My siblings, Peter and Elvia, you took the toughest roads in becoming the first ever college graduates in the family, and it was through your hard work and tremendous efforts that I am now proud to call myself a Spartan and prouder to have you as my brother and sister. David, I missed you throughout these past years little brother, but when you become the fourth Spartan in the Family you’ll understand: the sacrifice is all well worth it. Family is key and important throughout the journey, but the family keeps growing as the journey carries out. I would like to extend an enormous thank you to all the CAMP, HEP and other MSU staff, especially to those who were there for me in the toughest of times including Patty Joly, Elias Lopez, Oralia Gonzalez, Danielle Lopez, Liliana Salas, Rudy Ramos, Karla Loebick, Sara Becerril, Juan Flores and all my Phi Chapter brothers of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The journey has been amazing, but I know this is only the beginning. Michigan State University MSU CAMP GRADUATES 2012 Liushary D. Hernandez Bachelor of Science, Food Industry Management - Fall 2012 When I first came to Michigan State University I only had one goal set in my mind, to graduate. Five years later not only I take my degree with me, but also take the great memories and lessons learned throughout this path. First of all I want to thank God because if it was not for him, I would not be here. I would like to dedicate this important achievement to my family. They have always been there for me, supporting and pushing me to keep going forward when I did not feel strong enough to accomplish my goals. I am now proud to say that I am the first one in my family to graduate from college and its all thanks to them. Being part of a Big Ten University was a challenge, but thanks to the CAMP Program my experience in MSU was less complicated. As a CAMP student I had the opportunity of making good friends, and meeting great people who certainly are an important part of my life and my future career. Thanks to all the staff for the support and the inspirational words when I most needed them. Go green! Candelaria Lara Bachelor of Arts, Family Community Services - Fall 2012 Like most things in life everything has a beginning and an end. Besides receiving my diploma from Michigan State, I will also take with me the good and bad memories I have inquired during undergrad. Coming to MSU was a dream come true and an opportunity of a lifetime. There aren’t many chances you get to better your education at a top ten school, travel the world through an outstanding study abroad program and walk out of your dorm everyday meeting someone new from half-way around the world. I have learned so much about who I am, what I want to be and what I plan to do with the rest of my life from the experiences, people, & amazing relationships. When I first came to MSU I thought being a Spartan was just another Mascot. Now l leave with the understanding of what it means to bleed green and white, share a family with the brown and gold and have the courage to fight for what I believe in. I want to give special thanks to CAMP for opening the doors for me and helping me pave the way. I also want to thank my academic advisors, family, and close friends for showing me support and believing in me. Graduating is one of the biggest accomplishments in my life; this is only the beginning to future accomplishments in the years to come. Michigan State University MSU CAMP GRADUATES 2012 Jessica Lopez Bachelor of Science, Agribusiness Management Specializations: Food Industry Management, Studio Art, Latin America & the Caribbean, Chicano/Latino Studies Fall 2012 This journey from migrating with my family to attending Michigan State University AND finally graduating has been the most exciting, eye-opening experience of my life! I sadly leave MSU but I look forward to begin a new chapter in my life. I want to thank CAMP for helping me fulfill my dream. Good luck to everyone in their future endeavors! Janie D. Moyeda Bachelor of Arts, Spanish Specializations: Latin America & the Caribbean, Chicano/ Latino Studies - Summer 2012 I came into CAMP without knowing anyone and was very homesick because I had never been away from home. I never imagined how this new experience would change my life completely. I developed new friendships, encountered many situations and challenges that made me stronger. Being on my own taught me independence and gratitude. Therefore, I would like to thank all the people who helped me through my college experience. I want to give a special thanks to Migrant Student Services for making my freshman year the best year of my life! The supp ort was amazing because it helped me adjust to a new lifestyle. To all the staff members: thank you for believing in me, for all the financial, academic and moral support, and especially for giving me the opportunity to pursue my education. Special thanks to Patty Joly, Rudy Ramos, Luis Garcia, Karla Loebick and Elias Lopez. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for offering me the support and love of a family; words are not enough to express my appreciation for all the help that has been given to me. I also want to thank God and my family for their support and believing in me always! Lastly, I want to thank Demys for always being there for me through my stress and for encouraging me to finish strong, never giving up and guiding me to the path of success. I am very fortunate to have you in my life and appreciate all the patience you have given me. I am who I am today thanks to all the people that have impacted my life. To all the current CAMP students: I wish all of you the best and remember that you can do big things, especially with the CAMP support. Finish strong and don’t give up. After my graduation I will be getting married in July. I am very proud of myself because it was not an easy road but I did not give up. I had a beautiful daughter entering my third year in college and although it was challenging, she inspired and made me focus on a better future. A new chapter now approaches and I know I will make a difference! Michigan State University MSU CAMP GRADUATES 2012 Eleuterio Moreno, Jr Bachelor of Science, Food Industry Management Summer 2012 As I get ready to close yet another chapter of my life here at Michigan State University. I see myself looking back at all those special moments that made me smile and cherish those moments that made me as well as those that broke me down. All in all, that is what has made me who I am today. My time here has made me realize and comprehend things I would of have never thought possible. I received a lot of support along my journey from numerous staff, friends, programs, and organizations. First, and foremost I thank God and Mi Virgencita de Guadalupe for granting me the serenity to move along from the loss of my loved ones. Second, I would thank the patience my family has had for the past five years; I know it has been hard for them. The CAMP program for granting me the opportunity to pursue my education here at MSU, I am conscious that without their help I would not be here today. My Organization, Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity Inc. for showing me a whole new meaning of the words Fuerza, Integridad, Amistad (Strength, Integrity, and Friendship). In return I help this chapter continue withholding our 100% graduation rate. Last but not least, all my friends who have been with me through thick and thin. I know they have always been there when I needed them the most. I can honestly say that I am now ready to embark and open a new chapter in my life. My story continues…. Yvette Perez Bachelor of Arts, Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science Human Resources - Spring 2012 Attending school out of state of Texas, I expected change, yet as cliché as it might sound; never in a million years could I have anticipated my experience here at Michigan State University. I would be lying if I said it was an easy transition, yet to my benefit, I was able to navigate through the system with many resources available to me. Without a doubt, the College Assistance Migrant Program, now known as Migrant Student Services, has been one of the vital reasons I was able to not only survive, but accomplish personal and professional goals as well. Michigan State’s aphorism is that of advancing knowledge and transforming lives, and I am honored to be extended proof of just that. Special thanks to the staff but most especially to my family and friends alike, for they have been my source of support and inspiration. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2012; we are forever SPARTANS. Go Green! Michigan State University MSU CAMP GRADUATES 2012 Abilene Ochoa Bachelor of Arts, Hospitality Business - Spring 2012 My career at MSU would not have been possible without the support of my family and my MSU family- CAMP. These past four years have been the fastest years of my life and they have also been the most challenging. Here I have had numerous experiences that I will take with me wherever I am destined to go after graduation. Leaving my Texas home has taught me to be an independent woman and has taught me to appreciate my family, my culture and my challenges. MSU has been life changing for me and I would do it all over again with no doubt in my mind. I am very thankful to have been given the opportunity to attend this university. I could not have made a better choice. Gaspar E. Quintero Bachelor of Arts, Criminal Justice - Summer 2012 Entering Michigan State University as a CAMP student was an interesting year knowing that there were a lot of learning experiences. With the correct help and guidance, I was able to accomplish my goal to graduate from MSU. My advice to college students is come with an open mind and do not be afraid of failing. There are many helpful resources on campus that will get you through. I would like to thank the CAMP program and staff for the help that I received throughout the years. Arianna Martinez-Escamilla Bachelor of Science, Psychology Specialization: Health Promotion - Fall 2011 The years spent at MSU have been great! I have enjoyed my time here and learned many life lessons. My future plans include attending the Accelerated Nursing Program at MSU this May of 2012 and graduating next year! Furthermore, the CAMP program eased my transition as a freshman into the educational system and relieved the financial stressors associated with it. I hope to continue to further my education when I return home and achieve many personal goals. Also thanks to my loving parents who supported and encouraged me these years in college, I could not have done it with out them. Proud to be a SPARTAN! Denise Saenz Bachelor of Arts, Elementary Education - Summer 2012 I am grateful for the opportunity CAMP has provided for me, making my dream come to true of becoming part of Michigan State University. While my stay away from home CAMP became my family here in college, I am thankful to be part of the CAMP family. With the opportunity I have received I was able to pursue my bachelor’s degree in urban Elementary Education. This coming year I will start my oneyear internship as a teacher in the Lansing area, with plans to continue my education to pursue a master’s degree in teaching and curriculum. Since I will have learned from the best I believe I will be prepared to find a position as a teacher in an urban setting in the future to come. Michigan State University MSU CAMP GRADUATES 2012 Cristian M. Torres Bachelor of Arts, Hospitality Business - Spring 2012 After all the stress, struggles and sacrifices, the day of my graduation is finally here. After these four and a half years, I am thankful and enthusiastic, but most of all proud to say that I have achieved my most desired goal: to pursue a degree in Hospitality Business. I would like to thank my family for all their support; I couldn’t have done it without them. I would also like to thank MSU CAMP for placing me on the correct pathway. A special appreciation goes to my college advisor Ed Batayeh for always encouraging me, never giving up on me, and most of all for believing that I could finish strong. I feel blessed to have completed my undergraduate career successfully and I know that it doesn’t stop here. I will continue on for my Masters in Business Administration, as my Spartan soul has become limitless. My journey through life at Michigan State University was not an easy one, but it was the best it could have been. Memories have past and friendships will last. Above all, I am grateful to the One who lead me to this very moment, the One who sees all, the One who guided me since my beginning. It is for Him that I stand here today. Thank you, God. Nallely Trejo Bachelor of Science, Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science - Health Studies Sociology Cognate - Summer 2012 Obtaining a degree from MSU is not only an academic or professional accomplishment. Along with my college degree, I feel like I have also graduated with an invaluable life-learning experience which will never be found in a book. I am thankful that CAMP opened the doors for me to this experience full of struggles and challenges, but also blessings and successes. I thank God for a great family who were always my motivation and support, and also for the few but amazing friends who crossed my path and will always be part of it. Michigan State University MSU CAMP GRADUATES 2012 David Treviño Bachelor of Arts, Social Relations & Policy/Political Economy; Chicano/Latino Studies, Latin America & the Caribbean Studies – Spring 2012 It is an honor and a privilege to graduate as a CAMP scholar in May 2012. This experience has been one of the most rewarding gifts as an undergraduate. First off, it is important to recognize and praise the College Assistance Migrant Scholars Program for giving me an opportunity to attend Michigan State University. Their supportive services and guidance have taught me to positively move forward by providing an unforgettable self-fulfillment experience, leadership, and, most importantly, leaving Michigan State University with a valuable reward—a degree. As a first-generation college student and a migrant worker, my only dream was to make my mama and family proud, and it has finally been proven. My valuable lessons and accomplishments are a reflection of the beautiful people who have assisted me to acquire this experience. I want to take the time to give special thanks to the admirable people who have demonstrated care and motivated me to succeed: Maria M. Treviño, Miguel Treviño, Manuel Treviño, Fernando Enriquez, Jason Crawford, Richard Lee, Luis Garcia, Michael Craw, Dr. Curry, Ernesto Todd Mireles, and all CAMP staff. I am blessed by the people who believed in my potential. I am a strong believer in overcoming all odds. To the incoming freshmen, ongoing camp scholars, younger and older generations of all cohorts: take the tip of advice from me as a former CAMP student—keep learning, keep loving, acquire empathy, and above all, keep setting goals each semester without being timid! And finally, for extra motivation and confidence, speak your mind, even if your voice shakes. God Bless! Anna M. Valdez Bachelor of Arts, Communicative Sciences & Disorders Sociology Minor – Spring 2012 Attending Michigan State University has been a life changing experience. Not only have I expanded my educational knowledge, but have also gained an immense number of remarkable life lessons. With the help of CAMP, I had the opportunity to begin this journey at MSU and ultimately become a leader in today’s society. I was fortunate to study abroad and enrich my knowledge of cultural diversity. With my degree in Communicative Sciences and Disorders, I am a step closer to becoming a speech-language pathologist. I hope to help others overcome their speech and communication barriers, so they too can achieve their dreams. With my own efforts, the support from family and friends, and the guidance of my grandfather from above, I have been able to attain my dreams. This is just the first of many great accomplishments I hope to achieve in my life. Good luck to the future graduates, and congratulations to the graduates of 2012! Go Green, Go White! MSU CAMP MASTERS GRADUATE Michigan State University Adrian Altamira December 2012 Master of Science in Accounting Hello and CONGRATULATIONS to the graduating class of 2012! First of all, I would like to thank God, my family and friends, and all of the awesome people that make up our CAMP program! Thank you all so much! I am extremely grateful for having the opportunity to attend such a prestigious school, the opportunity to have met and made amazing friends and even greater memories. It is with great pride that I announce that as I receive my Master of Science degree in Accounting (and soon to be CPA certified) I am this much closer to reaching my dream of working for a Fortune 500 company. As I wrap up this chapter of my life, and move on to the ‘real world,’ I cannot help but thank everyone who supported, motivated and encouraged me to give it my all! I could not have done this without you! So as I put my books down and backpack away in exchange for a life of bills, work, and hopefully success, I know I will look back and miss this place where weekdays were tough but every weekend was a holiday. Nonetheless, I know that I leave this wonderful place with great memoirs! Thank you all, thank you MSU, and thank you GOD! I am glad to have helped pave the road for my future family and many migrants out there. Good luck to you all! MSU CAMP MASTERS GRADUATE Michigan State University Jorge A. Garcia May 2012 Master of Science in Criminal Justice There are no shortcuts to any place worth going; I unwaveringly found this old adage to be quite true. I did not realize that I had embarked on a long but interesting journey full of headaches, ramen noodle dinners, and endless nights at the library. However, I must confess I do not regret any aspect of my stay here. As I receive my Master of Sciences degree in Criminal Justice this May, and as I make my way out of the wonderful state of Michigan to where ever fate may take me, I know that I will leave this institution with many friends and family that will last a life time. Colleagues, we may be receiving diplomas at the end of this semester; however, look around you and realize how much more you have earned during your stay in our beloved Spartan Nation! I personally will proudly leave MSU with great pride, lifelong friends, a robust and fulfilling education, and an incredible ability to have an out-of-this world time at Harper’s on a budget. As ‘brevity is at the soul of wit,’ I want to CONGRATULATE the “Class of 2012!” May God bring many blessings to each and every one of you; may the future hold greatness in store for everyone, and may we receive wisdom enough not to forget where we came from as we grow older. I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to thank GOD, my supportive family, remarkable friends and the amazing CAMP staff that helped gear me in the right direction from the start. Mr. Garcia, Mr. Ramos, Mrs. Chalgian, sweet-sweet Patty, and all of the CAMP staff— I dearly thank you for your help, support, and for putting up with us all! BE BOLD, BE BRAVE, STRIVE FOR SUCCESS! Again, good luck to everyone and CONGRATS “Class of 2012!” MSU CAMP MASTERS GRADUATE Michigan State University Andie Lee Gonzalez May 2012 Master in Public Health Andie was born and raised in a rural area known as Palmview, Texas. She is daughter to Rebecca and Arturo Gonzalez Jr. whom she admires and is grateful for their unconditional support and love. She came to Michigan State University through the Michigan State University College Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP) in 2002. She is a current graduate in the Masters in Public Health Program at Michigan State University with the College of Human Medicine. She received her undergraduate bachelor’s degree in Dietetics through Michigan State University. Some of her accomplishments include being selected as a Research Education in Program to Increase Diversity (REPID) in Health Researchers Scholar, a Julian Samora Scholar Recipient, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Scholar and just recently accepted into the Michigan State University Dietetic Internship Program for Fall 2012. She is grateful for the support of her family, CAMP Program Staff for their support and assistance through her academia, academic mentors; Dr. Rene Rosenbaum and Dr. Won Song, friend and mentor, Ann Avery and all those who have inspired, empowered and impacted her through her time at Michigan State University. She understands and has personally experienced the challenges that most Latino students face but her strive for success is what keeps her going. Her advice to CAMP freshman students and current students is never stop believing, dream BIG, life is a journey we cannot foretell but only live through day by day and education will open up many opportunities not only for yourself but for your family and the advancement of our Latino community. MSU CAMP MASTERS GRADUATE Grand Valley State University Jose Luis Hernandez Galvan May 2012 Master of Science, Packaging It seems like it was yesterday when I arrived to MSU for the first time for AOP in July 2002. My mom and Abuelita dropped me off to the hotel where all the new CAMP students would spend the first night. I started college thinking that I knew what I wanted to become and later in the course of my education the direction of my patch changed. I don’t know if this is true but some people say that if you can’t hack it then pack it. A bachelor of science in packaging I pursued and I am glad that it worked that way. I had the opportunity to gain some hands on experience that made me more marketable and become what I am today. If I go to my childhood years when I was in Mexico I would have never thought that I would be in this place and gained all the knowledge and developed skills. Sometimes I wished I was a kid again to see all my loved ones that have passed away to show them what I have accomplished. I am uncertain how the future looks like but one thing is for sure and that is that I will work hard to reach my new goals and overcome any obstacles that my new path will encounter. All of us have our stories, struggles, challenges, and good or bad experiences but we all learned from the lessons of life and become better people and change our offspring’s future. We, no matter where we came from or how we got here, have the power to do something with our lives and change the predictions for our future. I would like to thank my family, god, and MSU CAMP for giving me the chance for being part of them, for the support and everything else that made MSU my home away from home. –GO GREEN! MSU CAMP MASTERS GRADUATE Grand Valley State University Sandra Edith Rodriguez May 2012 Master of Social Work As an undergraduate, Sandra attended Michigan State University with the help of the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP). She graduated with a Bachelor in Social Work in 2007. As a migrant student, Sandra experienced many struggles similar to those of other migrant children. Her experiences revolved around working with migrant families in the school setting, assisting migrant students further their education, and advocating for immigrants/refugee rights. In the past, she has served as a Migrant Health Promoter were she assisted pregnant women working in the fields. Having the opportunity as a Migrant Health Promoter made her aware of the difficulties the migrant community faces daily. Sandra hopes to gain more skills in order to develop efficient programs that address the health care needs of this country. At Grand Valley State University, Sandra had the opportunity to be involved with the Maternal Child Health Fellowship, which allowed her to continue to promote healthy pregnancies. Sandra plans to become a State-certified Hospital Interpreter in the near future. I have acquired a variety of skills throughout my journey at Grand Valley and Michigan State and that has shaped the person I am today. Working with refugees in a medical setting has given me the opportunity to confront obstacles that clients face daily. My time at Grand Valley has allowed me to reflect on multiple issues that impact our society. MSU CAMP STAFF Luis A.
