British actor extraordinaire David Suchet has embodied the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot for 25 years, drawing millions of fans and achieving an elusive goal: completing the entire catalogue of Poirot whodunits penned by Agatha Christie. “It’s been my life’s ambition to bring this amazing canon of works to completion,” says Suchet. “Poirot is a brilliant, yet profoundly complicated character and I’ve always loved playing him. He’s considerate, with a love of elegance and precision, but he is also so maddeningly frustrating to play as he’s so vain and pedantic. For all of his faults, he is one of the greatest listeners in literature.” WGBH’s Rebecca Eaton, executive producer for Masterpiece Mystery!, recalls first meeting Suchet on the set back in 1988. “He was completely in character as Hercule Poirot, and I smelled this lovely fragrance…he would wear a little silver boutonniere with real violets in it,” she says. “He later explained that he did this to keep himself in character.” Despite a successful career on the stage and in television and movies, Suchet embraced taking on a career-defining, quarter-century-long role—something few actors are willing to do. And that makes his final act (starting with two episodes this summer, and three more on WGBH and PBS this fall) more satisfying than sad, says Rebecca. “We’ve said farewell to a number of detectives over the years— John Thaw’s Inspector Morse, Helen Mirren’s Jane Tennison and Roy Marsden’s Adam Dalgliesh—and it’s always poignant,” she notes. “But with Poirot, because there aren’t any more stories, it really is a celebration of the enduring appeal of this fascinating Agatha Christie character and David’s brilliant portrayal.” Still, there’s plenty of mystery ahead, including episodes of Endeavour, Miss Marple and a brand-new film based on P.D. James’s Death Comes to Pemberley, inspired by Jane Austen’s beloved Pride and Prejudice. “The story picks up seven years after Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy marry, with the Bennetts coming to pay a visit,” explains Rebecca, “and therein lies the tale.” Suspenseful, literate storytelling at the highest level, brilliant acting year after year. It all happens thanks to your generous annual support of WGBH. In Search of Scarface Al Capone was the archetypal American gangster: the pinstripe suit and fedora, the lavish generosity and lethal temper, the friends in high places, the submachine guns and brutal murders. More than 80 years after Capone ruled organized crime in the Midwest, Chicago’s former Public Enemy Number One is still a source of fascination. This shrewd documentary reveals how the son of a Brooklyn barber became the world’s best-known gangster and explores his lasting impact on US culture. An American Visionary Grace Lee Boggs, 98, is a Chinese American philosopher, writer and activist in Detroit with a thick FBI file. A veteran of 75 years in the labor, civil rights and Black Power movements, as well as feminism and the quest for environmental justice, she challenges a new generation to throw off old assumptions and redefine revolution for our times. This remarkable documentary includes commentary from Angela Davis, Bill Moyers, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Danny Glover and a host of Boggs’s Detroit comrades across three generations. POV/American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs Wed, 7/2 at 7:30pm Grassroots Conservatives Katy and John are Tea Party activists who believe America’s salvation lies in a return to conservative values. Katy, a young stay-at-home mother, rockets to media stardom after a sensational confrontation with her senator at a town hall meeting. John, a retired businessman, fears losing the America he knew—and faces a conflict between principle and reality when he cannot afford his aging mother’s health care. Absorbing and even-handed, Town Hall immerses viewers in Katy and John’s world and their anxieties about a changing nation. Federal vs. State vs. Local Once a pioneer in legalizing medical marijuana, Montana may become the first state to repeal its medical marijuana law. Code of the West follows the political process of marijuana policy reform as well as the recent federal crackdown on medicinal growers nationwide. Featuring critiques from patients, growers, politicians, activists and community members on both sides of the issue, it vividly depicts what happens when federal and state governments clash with communities under fire, and how individuals ultimately pay the price. America ReFramed/Code of the West Tue, 7/15 at 8pm Activism, Post-Apartheid When Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa, he made an ambitious promise to ensure housing for all. Within two decades, however, the South African government sought to “eradicate the slums” by evicting shack dwellers at gunpoint. A new social movement has emerged to stop the bulldozers, with dynamic young leaders who are challenging evictions on the streets and in the courts. By turns inspiring, devastating and unexpectedly funny, Dear Mandela offers an eye-opening perspective on the role young people can play in political change. AfroPop: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange/Dear Mandela Fri, 7/18 at 6pm Into the Halls of Power Brothers, trailblazers and Cleveland icons, Louis and Carl Stokes changed the course of American politics. Carl was the first black mayor of a major American city; Louis was the first black US congressman from Ohio. Born into poverty, both served in World War II, entered electoral politics during the turbulent civil rights era and used their influence to remove barriers to opportunity. This documentary offers intimate recollections from their friends and colleagues, including President Barack Obama, Jesse Jackson and former Cleveland mayor Mike White. Listeners to PRI’s The World (a PRI/WGBH/BBC co-production heard weekdays, 3pm and 8pm) have. They recently followed graphic designer Kate McLean around Boston, gathering olfactory data—aromas of garlic, pavement and rubber tires in the North End—that will help McLean do for Boston what she has done for other cities. “I’m interested in people’s perception of a place by smell and aggregating that to form smell maps,” McLean told reporter Sarah Reynolds. “They’re an attempt to make something visual that is ephemeral.” The World highlighted McLean’s pursuit in its new Sideways Glance series, a segment the show incudes every Tuesday to tell quirky, intimate stories about everything from smell maps to the history of invisible ink. “We tackle the big, thorny geopolitical issues,” says Andrew Sussman, executive producer of The World. “But we often stumble on the kind of curiosity stories that make us want to learn more. And that’s where Sideways Glance comes in.” Created by The World’s Clark Boyd, the series has explored such topics as how a graphic novel captured the larger-than-life story of wrestler Andre the Giant, how a trip to England helped transform chicken farmer Robert Frost into a superstar poet and how monks in Spencer, MA, began brewing beer. “One of our producers finds a global story that hits us where we live— that makes us do a double or even triple take—and then we dig in to learn more,” Sussman says. “The result? You often can find out more about a person, place or thing by taking a sideways glance than by tackling it head on.” What’s on 89.7 WGBH 6am 7:50am 10am 11am 12pm 2pm 3pm 4pm 6pm 6:30pm 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 11pm 12am Boston Summer Arts Weekend WGBH, The Boston Globe and Citizens Bank are teaming up again to celebrate the city’s thriving arts community. The July Fourth holiday weekend is the second of WCRB’s three WCRBeach weekends, which span the summer months and connect our listeners with all there is to do in the area. Musically, the weekend of the Fourth will be filled with the great music you expect to enjoy; there will be a broad mixture of sounds and musical textures selected to accompany whatever activities you have planned for your holiday. This second WCRBeach weekend will run all the way from Friday morning until late Sunday. But, as they say in those late-night television commercials: wait, there’s more. Continuing a long-time tradition, WCRB will broadcast live from the Esplanade on Friday, July 4, bringing you the Boston Pops Orchestra with musical director Keith Lockhart as we celebrate the nation’s birthday. The program will be filled with your favorite musical pieces and, of course, a healthy dose of fireworks. Join WCRB’s Ron Della Chiesa and Laura Carlo, who will bring you every wonderful moment of the concert and all the accompanying excitement. Summer really gets going the next day, when WCRB begins broadcasting a season of concerts from the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer home at Tanglewood in the Berkshires. Every weekend WCRB will help you escape to the beauty of that area with a tantalizing array of performers and music. The very next afternoon, Asher Fisch will lead the Boston Symphony Orchestra in excerpts from Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, and pianist Garrick Ohlsson will be the soloist in Piano Concerto No. 2 by Brahms. In the following weeks, our Tanglewood broadcasts will bring you four concerts led by BSO music director designate Andris Nelsons, including Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with soloist Gabriela Montero, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, the Resurrection, with conductor Christoph von Dohnányi. For a complete listing of Tanglewood Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcasts, visit our website at classicalwcrb.org. So, the heart of the summer on WCRB will be filled with special features and a variety of great music that makes every day a little brighter. Located nine miles off the coast of Key Largo, FL, and 63 feet below the ocean surface, Aquarius is the world’s only underwater research lab. There, Goldstone joined a team of researchers from Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center participating in the Mission 31 expedition. Led by Fabien Cousteau, grandson of famed ocean explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau—creator of the first ocean-floor habitats for humans—the month-long Mission 31 honored the 50th anniversary of the elder Cousteau’s Conshelf II mission. (The mission was featured in the Academy Award– winning 1964 documentary World Without Sun.) Submerged in 1993, Aquarius has since assimilated into the nearby coral reef. “Researchers can essentially treat the reef like we do our backyards,” says Goldstone, host of Living Lab on The Point (Mondays, 9am and 7pm). “Since they’re living at the same pressure as the ocean around them, there’s no need to limit dive time.” Complete with six beds, a shower, toilet, air conditioning and even Wi-Fi, the lab can accommodate scientists for missions up to 10 days long.
