Five Holy Martyrs parishioner and Korean War Veteran Larry Kulik addressed the students and shared some of his experiences. Students shared poems, stories, artwork and sang patriotic songs. A procession to the Catholic War Veterans Monument in front of the school along Richmond street followed. Several veterans spoke of its significance, and explained that many of the names inscribed on the monument were members of the Five Holy Martyrs Community. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Playground Equipment For Nightingale With an assist from 14th Ward Alderman Edward M. Burke (center), Nightingale Elementary School recently celebrated the installation of two new sets of playground equipment. Principal Meg Kouretsos and Burke cut the ceremonial ribbon and opened the playground which has been without equipment for a decade. _______________________________________________________________________ Wall of Heroes At De La Salle De La Salle Institute recently held a Wall of Heroes Rededication Ceremony in the Toth Foyer of the Institute Campus for Youth Men. The display which was originally unveiled in November 2009, combines video with artifacts to honor alumni who served in the military. Guiding the project is Dean of Social Sciences and faculty member John Brogan. In attendance at the ceremony were alumni who have served in the military from World War II to the present. In Pumpkin Jamboree Parade Beginning January 1st, it will no longer be legal for individuals to dispose of unwanted electronics in their regular trash. Computers, monitors, electronic keyboards, scanners, fax machines and many other electronic devices, must now be taken to a registered recycler for proper management. The Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act, which took effect in 2008, required manufacturers to establish a recycling program for discarded electric products. The caroling will be lead by the Apollo Chorus of Chicago on Dec. 2nd, Windy City Gay Chorus and Aria on Dec. 9th and the Wicker Park Choral Singers on Dec. 16th. Complimentary warm beverages will be provided by Caribou Coffee. Drama Play At Kelly High School Crystal Hernandez and Julian Renteria rehearse a scene from “Up the Down Staircase.” The Kelly High School Drama Club selected “Up the Down Staircase” as its fall play and will be performing it this weekend in the auditorium. The dramatization was by Christopher Sergel from the 1965 novel by Bel Kaufman. Show times will be 3:45 p.m. on Dec. 1st, 7 p.m. on Dec. 2nd; and 10 a.m. on Dec. 3rd. All shows are open to the public. Tickets cost $3. The play is about an inner city high school with overcrowded classrooms, a lack of chalk, and an administration focused on rules and regulations. The setting is Calvin Coolidge High School, located in a low income, racially mixed New York neighborhood, and it is a “problem” school. First year teacher, Sylvia Barrett must deal with tough, enduring, troubled Dance-Along At Cultural Center The Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington, will present the 10th Annual Dance-Along Nutcracker in Preston Bradley Hall on Sunday, Dec. 4th at 3 p.m. All ages are invited to join professional dancers on the dance floor. students, and a trying atmosphere.
