LIFE
Serving the Communities of Brighton Park, McKinley Park and Archer Heights, for over 70 Years
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1ST, 2011
On Veterans Day, Pope John Paul II School students invited family members, friends and neighbors that have served our country to a special celebration. Five Holy Martyrs parishioner and
Korean War Veteran Larry Kulik addressed the students and shared some of his experiences.
Students shared poems, stories, artwork and sang patriotic songs. A procession to the Catholic War
Veterans Monument in front of the school along Richmond street followed. Several veterans spoke
of its significance, and explained that many of the names inscribed on the monument were members
of the
Five Holy Martyrs Community.

Drama Play At
Kelly High School
Crystal Hernandez and Julian Renteria
rehearse a scene from “Up the Down Staircase.”
The Kelly High School
Drama Club selected “Up
the Down Staircase” as
its fall play and will be
performing it this weekend in the auditorium.
The
dramatization
was
by
Christopher
Sergel from the 1965
novel by Bel Kaufman.
Show times will be 3:45
p.m. on Dec. 1st, 7 p.m. on
Dec. 2nd; and 10 a.m. on
Dec. 3rd. All shows are
open to the public.
Tickets cost $3.
The play is about an
inner city high school
with overcrowded classrooms, a lack of chalk,
and an administration
focused on rules and regulations.
The setting is Calvin
Coolidge High School,
located in a low income,
racially mixed New York
neighborhood, and it is a
“problem” school. First
year teacher, Sylvia
Barrett must deal with

students, and a trying
atmosphere.
Although more than
40 years old, the play is
still relevant today,
according to Drama
Teacher Michael Buino.
“My students find this
play especially accessible
to them, as they draw
upon their own experiences in high school,”
Buino said. “It should
have great appeal to students, faculty members,
parents, and administrators anywhere. The play
contains the message
that despite all obstacles,
good teachers and willing
students
will
come
together. Education is
happening, despite great
odds. The script features
some
romance, too.”
