Types
of Markers
Marking heads – hand markers or machine markers have some elements in common.
•The material must be conductive.
•The material must not participate in the etch process
• ie: The stable material must not act as a cathode.
• Consideration must be given for electrolyte feed whether manual or automated.

Types of Markers - Hand Markers
Hand markers are available in a wide range of sizes, and they can also be machined at angles or contours for access to
difficult places. It is important that the hand marker is larger than the design to be marked but smaller than the stencil to
be used. This enables the mark to be made with one application of pressure. Pressure provides sharp attractive marks.
Lack of pressure allows the electrolyte and therefore the current to etch outside the stencil artwork openings causing fuzzy
undefined marks.

Types of Markers - Pads
Electrolyte Pads Monopads - M
Fabricated cloth pads act a medium to hold and supply a working source of electrolyte for the
etch process. This pad is typically wrapped around the marker or inserted into a stencil cap. In
the Monode product line these pads are designated with an “M” in front of the part number.

Types of Markers - Deep Etch Pads
Deep Etch Pads Deep Etch Monopads - DE
A deep etch pad unlike a standard etch pad, consists of a fibrous material. The fibers of this
material, with slight pressure, will push through the fibers of the stencil, allowing current to flow
freely and easily so that the metal is removed at a rapid rate. Of course it is necessary for the
deep etch pad to be saturated with electrolyte at all times, the electrolyte being a good
conductor. The presence of the deep etch pad and the excess electrolyte keeps the stencil cool
and increases its life. In the Monode product line these pads are designated with an “DE” in front
of the part number.
