Spending an evening doing good with the Golden Bear
Everyone aspires to play golf like Jack
Nicklaus, the Hall of Famer and winner
of more majors than anyone in the history
of the game. But if ever given the chance
to spend time around
the Golden Bear off
the course, you might
come away wanting
to be like Jack, Hall of
Fame philanthropist
and human being.
On the Sunday evening after Thanksgiving, Jack and his wife,
I’m Up
Barbara, appeared at
Marty Perlmutter
the dinner for the Celebrities Fore Kids charity event at Admiral’s Cove in Jupiter – one of the first couples to arrive and one of the last to depart.
They have been a part of the event for
years donating items for auction and signing memorabilia pieces for the organization.
Certainly a lot of sports celebrities do
the same, loaning their name to the event
and showing up to help the cause. But Jack
and Barbara are made from a different
mold. The only mention of the Nicklauses
in the evening program was recognition as
a donor and in auction item No. 10 – a day
on the ocean with the pair on their 110foot luxury super yacht (two-and-a-half
hours with the couple, drinks and dinner
sold for $32,000).
My wife and I have been around charity golf events for more than 10 years now

but can’t recall a single day where the star of
the program was barely mentioned. In fact,
we’ve seen just the opposite.
At Deering Bay Country Club in south
Miami-Dade County, the Miami-Dade
College South baseball team had a tournament in which one of the coaches’ alums
was the headliner – a local kid who was
good enough to be a major league all-star
and collected more than 2,000 hits in the
bigs. People were hoping to take pictures
with him, to hear stories about playing in
the major leagues.The tournament started
– but he showed up late, making it to the
tee just in time for the start.
The tournament ended and the coach,
the man for whom this player competed
for in Miami, had to call him to ask him
to come back to the reception because he
already had driven off the property.
Philanthropy was not in his DNA.
When Nicklaus arrived about 30 minutes prior to the official start of the cocktail
hour, he was asked by one of the volunteers
if he would sign a framed memorabilia
piece that was selling that evening. Not an
issue. He even waited for the photographer
to document the signing.
Because the majority of the crowd hadn’t
arrived as yet, I was able to approach Barbara and asked her if I could tell her my favorite Barbara Nicklaus story. She laughed,
as this was the second time we had met.

Time to be Santa
By James Stammer
It's that time of the year once again.
Time to figure out who has been nice and
who has been naughty. Time to figure out
just what to get the golfer on your list.
Golfers are not the easiest bunch for
which to buy gifts. However, that is changing a bit of late with a thanks to technology
and the electronic devices that we all so love.
Pretty much every one of us has a cell
phone. We use it to communicate in every
possible manner. Now, thanks to apps such
as Sky Droid (www.skydroid.net) we can
turn that phone into a GPS unit that gives
us yardages on more than 30,000 courses
all over the world.
But, wait, there is more. Not only does
Sky Droid give you yardages to specific
points on every hole, it shows you a layout
of each hole, allows you to touch the screen
to get a yardage to anywhere on that hole,
provides a flyover of each hole and more.
You can also tell it which club you are hitting, and set a mark. When you get to where
you ball finishes, you set another mark and,
over time, the app will calculate how far you
tend to hit each club and how far right or left
you tend to be from where you aimed. You can
also ask the app where on the hole you would
likely hit a particular club and it will show you.
You can keep all of your statistics, scores
and more. Best of all, the app costs less than
$2. For an additional $1, you get the add-on
to synchronize your scores.
One of the hottest segments in swing

analysis and training are lightweight
sensors that plug into the butt end of your
clubs and transmit, via Bluetooth, several hundred pieces of data to your tablet
or phone.
You can instantly see your swing path,
swing speed, know whether you had the
clubface open, square or shut at impact and
more. Over time you will learn what your
tendencies are.
The best thing is that this technology
has gotten much less expensive and competition in this category is heating up. This
means lower prices and a better selection.

INSTRUCTION
Get two fundamentals perfect
to improve your game quickly
By Jamie Fordyce
Proper Grip
No fundamental is more important to
a consistent, powerful swing than having a
good, solid grip on the club.
The main functions of the grip are to
control the club and allow your wrists to
hinge properly throughout the swing. Putting your hands properly on the club each
time is essential to having control of your
shots.
When preparing to take your grip on
the club, first see that the club head is properly aimed and soled, then take the club
firmly in your left hand with the back of the
left hand facing your target, then put your
right hand lightly on the club with your
right palm facing your target. The center of
your right palm should fit against your left
thumb.
Hold the club securely in your left hand
throughout the swing to maintain control
of the club and your swing path.
Never tighten your right hand on the
club: If you do, your wrists will not hinge
and unhinge properly.
w First see that the club head is properly
aimed and soled.
w Take the club firmly in your left hand
with the back of the left hand facing your
target.
w Never tighten your right hand on the
club.
Tempo
When you watch good players swing,
you can see that they all swing differently
and they all have their own speed at which
they swing the club.
The tempo of your swing, how fast or
slow a player swings the club, is related to
your personality. The tempo of someone
who walks quickly is going to be faster than
someone who takes his or her time.
Good tempo on the backswing is essential. If you swing back too fast, you will
lose the balance and control of the club you
started with. If you swing down too fast,
your body turn will not be able to keep up
with the club. Both cases will lead to inconsistent contact.
As you swing the club away from the
ball, try to swing the club, arms, hands and
body away slowly in one connected motion
to the top of the swing. Then the critical
transition from backswing to downswing
must happen. The downswing always starts
from the ground up, your weight has to
move on to your left leg before your arms
and club start back to the ball and head
through to the finish.
You can work on your tempo on the
driving range with a weighted club or a
Medicus.

Woulfe wins Dixie Senior Am; Rogoff tops in Super Senior
By Gary Curreri
Fort Lauderdale attorney Rick Woulfe
recently won the Senior Dixie Amateur
at TPC Eagle Trace in Coral Springs after
carding a 72-76-70 for a one-shot win over
Scott Hurley.
The victory was the seventh for Woulfe
who won in 2000 and followed that up with
back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. He
also won consecutive titles from 2008-12.
Woulfe, recently named Florida State
Golf Association Senior Player of the Year,
birdied three of his first seven holes on the
final day to finish with a 2-under par 70
and the coveted championship.
Eagle Trace member Bob Rogoff, 73, got
up and down for bogey to defeat Shawn
McLoughlin of Connecticut in a one-hole
sudden-death playoff to win the Super Senior title for players 65 and older.
Remainder of Dixie later this month
Tournament Director John Hand
gushed as he completes his field for the
upcoming tournament that will be held at
Heron Bay and TPC Eagle Trace.
“The level of players that we are getting
this year is better than we have ever seen,”
said Hand, who has been involved in the
tournament since 2009. This is his first
year as the tournament director. “We have
lower handicaps, better quality of players
and I think that is because we put on a
great event.”
“We get good reviews from the players

Dixie Senior Am.

every year and they are treated right,” Hand
said. “I think the college coaches also like
to get their players a chance to play some
competitive golf instead of just going out
and playing with their friends.”
The Men’s Dixie Amateur event, which
got its start in 1924 and was played at the
old Miami Country Club, will be held Dec.
19 (Heron Bay), Dec. 20 (Heron Bay), and
Dec. 21 (TPC at Eagle Trace, and then cut
to 72 players and ties) before the championship round Dec. 22 at Heron Bay. A full
field of 144 golfers will compete, including
defending champion Brandon Matthews, a
junior at Temple University.
“We have some top talent,” Hand said.
“I would say two-thirds of the field are
plus-handicaps. We also have several international teams coming from Sweden and
Iceland. We also have players coming from
Germany, France, Switzerland, Mexico and
across the United States.”
The Women’s Dixie Amateur event will
also feature 144 golfers and will be held
Dec. 16 (Heron Bay), Dec. 17 (TPC at Eagle
Trace) and Dec. 18 (full field at Heron Bay,
and then cut to 72 players and ties) before
the championship round Dec. 19 at TPC
Eagle Trace. The women’s division began
in 2002.
Local favorite Meghan Stasi of Oakland
Park is in the field along with LSU senior
Elise Bradley, who finished third year. She
will be joined by Tiger teammate and Eagle
Trace resident Carly Ray Goldstein. Rollins
redshirt senior Hally Leadbetter, daughter
of famed instructor David Leadbetter, is
also entered.
Past champions for the tournament include: Andy Bean, Bruce Fleisher, Lanny
Wadkins, Nolan Henke, Len Mattiace
and Jesper Parnevik for the men and Lexi
Thompson, Angela Park and Paula Reto for
the women.

FITNESS
Load to Explode
By Jeff Kroop
I love that expression … just like sprinters load up against a block before they explode out or a pitcher pushes off an elevated mound to deliver a 100-mph fastball,
physically feeling that sense of loading as
you shift your weight into your backswing
leg before you explode out is pretty cool.
In my exercise science world we define
loading as if you were pushing down on a
big spring or winding those toy tops as far as
they can go before they uncoil and explode.
Interestingly, I have a lot of golfers who
tell me that they do not physically feel any
sensation of loading.
Typically the primary culprits are the
dreaded swing fault sway due to weak
glutes (yes, your gluteus maximus).
One of my physical assessments to determine your glute strength is called a
bridge with leg extension:
Lay in a hook/line position with your
hands elevated. Lift your pelvis in the air
keeping it level and then extend one leg
knee height for 10 seconds.
If you experience any shaking or wobbling then the glute muscles are weak. If
you experience any cramping then your
glutes are inhibited or as Tiger has said “My
Glutes are De-Activated.”
This extension test will
show your stability and the
strength in your glutes.
Be sure to compare both sides.
You can also use this bridge position as
part of your training routine for strengthening your glutes. Do 2-3 sets or 10-15 repetitions.
The resisted sway drill is a great golfspecific exercise. Using resistance tubing
around your waist, either have a friend or
use a golf cart to secure the band. Set up
in your normal address position and then
walk away to where you feel the band is really pulling you into a sway.
Focus on turning into your backswing
forcing your leg/glute muscles to stabilize
and physically feel that sensation of loading.
Go for it.

Polland triumphs in PGA opener
By Craig Dolch Port St. Lucie
Ben Polland continued to put the PGA
Professional Championship behind him,
making a final-hole birdie Tuesday to shoot
a 6-under 66 and edge Mark Brown by a
shot to win Event 1 of the PGA Tournament Series at PGA Golf Club.
Polland, who blew a two-shot lead at
No. 18 to lose to Matt Dobyns in the PGA
Professional Championship, hit a 9-iron to
7 feet Tuesday and made the putt to finish
at 11-under 133. He earned $5,000 for his
first win in the PGA Tournament Series.
“I was over the Club Pro real soon,” said
Polland, the PGA Assistant Professional at
Deepdale Golf Club in Manhasset, N.Y. “I
already got some retribution when I won
the Met Open at Winged Foot with a birdie
at 18 to get into a playoff. All I ask for is the
opportunity.”
Polland made only two pars on his front
nine, along with three birdies, three bogeys
and an eagle at the par-5 seventh, when
he “hooked” his 4-iron to 19 feet from the
hole. He was solid down the stretch, with
birdies at 15, 16 and 18 to avoid the playoff
with Brown.
Polland was in between clubs at No.
18, holding a pitching wedge before he
changed to a 9-iron from 139 yards. He was
told on the tee he needed to birdie the hole
to win.
“That enabled me to focus in a little
more,” Polland said.
Brown, the PGA Head Professional at
Tam O’Shanter Country Club in Brookville,
N.Y., shot the low round of the tournament,
an 8-under 64, thanks to four consecutive
birdies starting at the seventh hole. He finished with nine birdies and a lone bogey.
“I hit it fair at best, but I made putts
from everywhere today, like I haven’t made
in years,” said Brown, who has won four
events in the PGA Tournament Series. “I
bet you I only had 25 putts.”
Bob Sowards, a PGA Teaching Professional at New Albany (Ohio) Country
Club, had a 66 and finished third alone at
136. He was the leading money winner in
last year’s PGA Tournament Series and is
the reigning PGA Professional Player of
the Year.
“I played the par-5s only two-under for
the tournament, so that’s why I lost,” Sowards said. “You have to play well on the
par-5s.”
Dobyns, who has all but clinched this
year’s Player of the Year award, shot consecutive 69s and was among five players
tied for fourth. He gave a fist pump when
Polland’s birdie on 18 dropped.
“He knew what he needed to do, and he
did it,” Dobyns said of Polland. “He’s had
some bad beats, but he’s also won some
tournaments that way. He’s mature enough
to know both things happen in golf. He was
on the right side today.”
The PGA Tournament Series is presented by Golf Advisor.

Quail Ridge Country Club in Boynton
Beach is proud to announce Daniel Brosnihan III as the new director of golf and
Michael Korenoski as the new head professional.
The duo have worked a combined 31
years at Quail Ridge.
Brosnihan takes over for Charlie Bowie,
who has run Quail Ridge’s golf operation
since 1984. Brosnihan becomes just the
third director of golf in Quail Ridge’s 41year history.
Brian Sutherland, chairman of Quail
Ridge’s golf search committee and a vice
president at the club, said the committee
explored hiring someone from outside but
Brosnihan and Korenoski proved to be the
perfect fit.
“The committee felt that Dan and Mike
both exemplified the personal qualities,
attitude and strong work ethic that Quail
Ridge members were accustomed to with
the excellent performance of the Golf
Operation established by Charlie Bowie,”
Sutherland said. “Countless members have
supported our decision by their comments
both verbally and through e-mails.”
Brosnihan has been at Quail Ridge since
1999, serving as head professional for the
past 10 years.
“Having learned under the tutelage of
Charlie Bowie, I will continue the successes
and honor the history and tradition associated with Quail Ridge,” Brosnihan said.
Korenoski joined the staff in 2000 and
was named assistant head professional in
2005. He was promoted to first assistant
professional in 2007 and co-head professional in 2014.
More than 100 of Quail Ridge’s residents
have a handicap in single digits. Among its
former members are past Masters champions Claude Harmon and Sam Snead and
the club is headquarters of the prestigious
Society of Seniors golf organization.
Quail Ridge recently announced it will
start building a $22 million clubhouse next
year. It is expected to open October 2017.
Located 20 minutes south of West Palm
Beach and only minutes north of Boca Ration, Quail Ridge offers its members two
Joe Lee-designed championship courses,
extensive practice facilities, a 16-court tennis center, and a free-standing health and
fitness center.

Oakland Park’s Stuart wins her fifth title
Oakland Park’s Janet Stuart was more
concerned about flirting with shooting
her age than she was winning the recent
Pompano Beach Women’s Golf Association
2015 Past President’s
Cup Championship.
“(Winning)
this
particular tournament
was a surprise to me
because I hadn’t done
too well on the first
day,” said Stuart, who
won the fifth President’s Cup title after
shooting a two-day

net score total of 144.
Gary Curreri
She edged out Debbie
Brown on a match of cards. “I didn’t figure I had a chance so I wasn’t paying much
attention to it, so maybe that was good. I
didn’t get nervous.”
Stuart, 82, shot an 85 (net 67) on the
second day after an opening round 95 (77
net). The winner was decided by a match of
scorecards using the USGA recommended
method and going back on the last nine
holes played to determine the winner. Stuart scored a 43, less 9 handicap strokes for
a net total of 34, while Brown shot a 42 less,
7 handicap strokes for a total of 35. Brown
won the tiebreaker by one stroke.
“I was very surprised and wasn’t paying
much attention to it because Bob Loring,
the club pro, had originally announced that
Debbie had won,” Stuart said. “The two net
scores were added up together and we had

Association’s Past President’s Cup
Championship.

tied, so when they went back to match the
scores on the cards, I had shot a gross score
of 43 and Debbie shot a 42. Then somebody
spoke up and said it was net game and not
gross, so Bob and a couple of the girls got
together and figured it out and I won. It was
a little complicated.”
Brown, 58, of Deerfield Beach, said she
knew when they tied with the 144s that she
would be runner-up.
“Janet and I played together the last
round of the President’s Cup,” Brown said.
“When they announced the tie, I knew right
away I had lost the competition because of
our back-nine scores and our handicaps.
“When they announced I had won, I
also knew that was incorrect,” Brown added. “I refrained from the discussion and allowed those present to resolve it. After reexamining the cards, it was declared that
Janet won. Of course, I was disappointed,
but Janet Stuart has long been my hero
when it comes to golf. I admire her and I
am encouraged by her that the future holds
many more bright sunny days of golf.”
Stuart also won the President’s Cup titles
in 2000, ’01, ’10 and ’12. She also has won a
couple of Club Championships at the Pines
Course at the Pompano Beach Golf Course.
“It was more of a surprise because I am
getting up there and all these young girls
are playing well,” said Stuart, who is currently a 17 handicap. “I almost shot my age
the second round and I was thinking more
of that than winning the tournament. I was
hoping to sneak in a couple of more pars or
birdies coming in.”
Stuart plays three times a week and
started playing golf in 1992.
“I love playing,” Stuart said. “It’s just a
wonderful game.”

Nicklaus helps celebrate Ibis opening
Jack Nicklaus was impressed upon his
recent return to the Club at Ibis in West
Palm Beach.
Nicklaus, whose family has designed
the three respected
courses at Ibis, was
joined by Ibis members, West Palm Beach
Major Jeri Muoio, and
Ibis management and
staff to celebrate this
historic occasion for
the 25-year-old community.
Palm Beach Notes
“It is beautiful,”
Gary Curreri
said Nicklaus, 75. “It is
absolutely gorgeous.
The multi-use facility is done beautifully.
The outdoor patio is very unique with the
sun-rain louver situation. The grillroom is
beautiful. It is very nice.”
The Club at Ibis hosted the grand
opening of its new, 22,000 square foot
clubhouse, which completes a $33 million
Capital Improvement Project that included an all-new 28,000-square-foot sports
village at The Club at Ibis, formerly known
as Ibis Golf & Country Club.
Ibis is the only golf facility in the world
featuring three courses designed by three
different Nicklaus family members – the
Legend Course designed by Jack Nicklaus;
the Heritage Course by Jack Nicklaus II;
and the Tradition Course by Steve Nicklaus. The event helped tee up the 25th anniversary of the Legend Course.

Jack Sr., who recently learned he is the
recipient of Sports Illustrated’s prestigious
Muhammad Ali Legacy award, joked that
the facility is a lot nicer than the courses.
Nicklaus is only the third person to
be honored as he joins Special Olympics
founder Eunice Shriver and NBA legend
and philanthropist Earvin (Magic) Johnson.
“I think it is a lot nicer than the golf
courses,” Nicklaus said with a grin. “The
golf courses are 25 years old. “I have never
played Steve’s. The golf courses are nice. It
is a complex we are very proud to be a part
of. They have been very successful and it is
nice to come back and see it.”
“The practice facility is great and they
keep the golf courses in nice shape,” Nicklaus added. “They have taken care of my
legacy as you might say very nicely. I am
very proud of that. The people enjoy it. The
people like it and they have a huge membership and a successful development and
that’s what my job is to provide an amenity
that will help produce that.”
As part of the grand opening, noted

Golf at Granada: Walk this way
OK, let’s be completely honest.
Golf is not the most strenuous sport in
the world.
For most golfers, they jump in a cart,
jump out, grab a club
and swing it for all of
five seconds, jump
back in the cart and
do the same thing
over and over again.
Yes, there’s a little bit
of walking between
shots and to the green,
but that’s about it.
Miami-Dade Notes
You might even enBill Van Smith
joy a beer and/or cigar
while you compete.
Let’s face it. You can’t do that in most sports.
Of course, there are a few sports that
might be even less physical than golf. Shuffleboard comes immediately to mind. And,
of course, there is bowling, where beer and
smoking cigars and cigarettes are pretty
close to being mandatory.
Just joking, all you bowlers out there.
However, with golf, the physical aspect
of the game can be altered.
Try walking a course rather than taking one of those electric or gasoline carts.
That will add many steps to the round and
far fewer calories to your body. When you
walk a round of 18 holes covering about
6,000 yards, you are traversing approximately six to seven miles – usually under
the hot South Florida sun.
Now, that’s some good exercise.
Here’s the problem: Some courses these
days don’t allow walkers, and there are only
a few courses that actually encourage walking by having hand carts available for rental.
Why?
The answer: Part of that greens fee you
pay almost always includes cart rental. So
much so, courses usually don’t even separate the two – they assume you’re going for
a ride while at the same time they are enjoying their money ride.
Executive courses (par 54 or so) might be
the exception because there is less walking to
do and riding carts are less necessary because
of the short distance between green and tee.
Straying from the norm, there’s one fullsized course in Miami-Dade that prides itself on having walkers.
Granada Golf Course, more than any
other course in the area, attracts walkers.
The course welcomes them … the course
encourages them … the course has made
its reputation as a walking course. And the
course, located amid the streets of Coral
Gables, indeed does rent hand carts.
Adrian Carrillo, 31, knows well that
walking a course entails exerting energy.
No problem.
“I prefer walking, it’s good exercise,”
he said. “As you get older and your body
slows down, you need more cardiovascular.
That’s what you get by walking. When you
walk, it’s strenuous.
“I honestly prefer walking to riding a
cart. You work up a sweat – nothing wrong
with that.”
Granada: A walk on the golf side
Everything you needs is on your walking
cart, and Adrian Carrillo prefers walking to
a riding cart. Photo by Bill Van Smith
There are other advantages, according to
Carrillo.
“It gives you more time to see the outdoors,” he said. “It also gives you more time
See Miami-Dade Notes, page 21
w The course: Located at 2001 Granada Boulevard in Coral Gables and
open to the public. The nine holes
(2,669 yards) just underwent a major upgrading. When it re-opened
after the facelift, among the people
at the ceremony was PGA pro and
Miami resident Erik Compton, who
played the course while growing up.
w Why Granada is unique: Noted for
its numerous banyan trees … its
background view of the downtown
buildings of Coral Gables … and, of
course, its numerous walkers.
w Price: Until slightly higher winter
rates hit, residents can play nine
holes for $15, and non-residents for
$20. Want to play 18? A replay of
the nine is $10 for residents and $14
for non-residents. A pull cart rental
is $5. A riding cart costs $14.50.
w Cost of buying your own pull cart:
Basic ones can be purchased in the
$60 range at sporting goods stores.
If you want to get fancy and spend
more money, you can buy a pull cart
(actually, you can also call them
push carts because many people do
just that rather than pull them) that
is motorized, and if you really want
to get fancy, there are pull carts that
employ remote control.

Before Moore started his company he
worked in the medical field of optical diagnostics. It was there that he noticed a lot
of people whose profession kept them outdoors coming in for cataract surgery.
“I would see people maybe 48 or 50
years old, with cataracts,” he said. “We’d remove the lens and it would look like that of
someone in their 70s or 80s.”
He soon put two and two together and
realized that the sun was damaging these
people’s eyes. He decided to do something
about it. He discovered that these people
wouldn’t wear sunglasses on the job because they would interfere with their ability
to perform their job.
One of his subjects was a tennis professional. She was in her late 40s and needed
cataract surgery thanks to sun damage from
playing so many years without protection.
The first lens he developed was a “notch”
lens for tennis. This lens only lets in a specific light wavelength: this one being the
yellow color of the tennis ball. This made
the ball “pop” in a player’s vision. He went
on to license the technology to Bolle.
After a while he wasn’t happy with the
optical quality of his licensed products
and decided he could make not only a better lens, but also one that applied to many
sports and outdoor professions. He wanted
a sizable population to target with his new
line, and decided golfers were it.
“I decided that I could make a better
product,” he said. “Our lenses use the quality of a camera type lens with impact resistance. We spend six to eight times what the
big-name companies do on our lenses.”
The investment shows. Peak Vision

legends such as Jack Nicklaus and Arnold

New Green Theme
The theme on the Treasure Coast this
summer seemed to be “Let’s Renovate.” A
handful of courses around the area closed
their fairways, tore up their course in some
fashion and went to work to make conditions better for the coming season.
Savanna Club in Port St. Lucie was one.
The Charles Ankrom-designed track had its
greens’ complexes completely torn up and
rebuilt, its fairways stripped of their sod
and replanted with fresh new grass, and a
new turf management team put into place.
Now that the greens and fairways are
complete and the course has re-opened,
next up are the tee boxes. Soon, it will feel
like a completely new course.
The results thus far are amazing. The
course had gotten a bit rough over the
years. Many people don’t realize that turf
and greens complexes have a life expectancy. After about seven years or so, depending on the amount of play, the grass
simply gets tired and no longer responds to
being cut and groomed to the short lengths
needed for a good putting surface.
Under all that beautiful grass that we
hope rolls well enough that we make every
putt is an infrastructure that drains away
enough water to keep the greens from getting too soft, yet retains enough moisture
to keep the grass healthy and growing.
Over time all of this gets compacted,
doesn’t work as intended and needs to be
rebuilt. It’s an expensive undertaking and
many courses fell behind on their schedules
when the recession hit. Now that things are
somewhat better, it’s time to catch up.
Savanna Club is what many call an “executive” course. It plays to a par of 61 and
measures slightly more than 3,800 yards
from the longest of three sets of tees. That
may seem short to the long-hitters in our
game, but to those of us without five or
more hours to dedicate to a round of golf,
it’s a godsend.
There are a dozen par-3s, the shortest of
which is just 113 yards, and the longest comes
in at a stout 197. Best of all, they are not all
nearly the same length. You will find five par4s and a single par-5 at Savanna Club.
Savanna Club is open to the public and
the rates are very competitive. Call (772)
879-1316 or visit www.savannaclubhoa.
com for more information.

110 golfers fundraise for Wounded Warriors Project on Veterans Day
Broward Notes from page 11
$12,000 for WWP, whose mission is to
honor and empower Wounded Warriors.
“This is great,” said Winklejohn, 33, a
Marine Corps vet, who was involved in two
IEDs in Iraq during his two years there,
which ended in 2004. “It is definitely needed. It will give a lot of support and help out
to other veterans in the Wounded Warriors.
“It is very difficult to cope and adjust.
The No. 1 thing we need is support. We
can’t heal ourselves.”
Winklejohn said having the tournament
was also nice considering the others he has
played in are in Doral or West Palm Beach.
“It is a couple of miles down the road
for me, so this is great,” Winklejohn said.
“This is great having right here in Davie. I
didn’t even know about this one last year so
I didn’t play. This is my first time doing the
Davie course.”
Winklejohn suffered a neck injury and
has some other physical disabilities in addition to PTSD with the depression.
He said the golfing helps stretch him,
although he is limited some because of the
neck injury. He said it’s great to get out and
be active, but more importantly, meeting
the other golfers.
“This means a lot to me,” he said. “It’s
great. When I came home there wasn’t a
lot of handshakes and thank yous and it
has gotten a lot better. It is great to see that
we do have support and we do have people
here to help us out and have our back.”
Donations were made at the tournament by participating golfers, sponsors
and silent auction donors. The donations
will help support more than 20 life-saving
programs and services that impact more
than 75,000 injured service members and
over 12,000 caregivers and family support
members.
A total of 110 golfers competed. It was
preceded by a Veterans Day ceremony featuring the Joint Service Color Guard from
U.S. Southern Command.
The National Anthem sung by Julie
Massey, a performing arts student at Broward Community College, and Veterans
Day commemorations were made by Congressional Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, and Susan Starkey, vice mayor of the Town of Davie.
The winning team was composed of
Kevin Osceola, Elliott Young, Richard Trotter and Roger Stone, who shot 53 and won
by seven.
Brian Dudley, Ryan Millan, Jeremy Toback, Selena Reyes were second and Joey
Kovac, Joe Byerley, John Baleno and Billy
Balzer (61) took third.
The team winning the award for
the highest score at 73 was John Reininger,
Ellen Fraser, James Kingsepp, and
Harold Blye.
It marked the second consecutive year
that’s Stone’s foursome won. The only player different in the foursome this year was
Young, who replaced Keith Ng, 51, of Pembroke Pines.
“This is a lot of fun and for a great cause,”
said Stone, 51, of Davie. “Who wouldn’t
want to support people who risk their lives
for our freedom? It is pretty much all about
the cause. Once you start playing, the com-

petition comes out. It gets intense, but it is
still fun.”
Stone said golfing is secondary when it
comes to the Warriors.
“I see golf as being meaningless compared to what they did and what they do,”
Stone said. “It means everything in the
world to me to be able to play golf and help
support them. I am happy to do it. I love
the golf. I don’t know if there is anything
more important than the soldiers that protect us.”
Dave Harris, director of marketing for
Davie GCC, said it is an important cause.
“I believe it is the only Veterans Day
Tournament for veterans in Broward County,” Harris said. “It does support a major
charity that helps our veterans that is needed right now since everybody has heard the
news that the Veterans Administration isn’t
doing as good a job for the veterans as everybody hoped they would. So projects like
this are very important for them.”
Harris said several of the golfers were
local veterans, including alumni of WWP
programs, and active servicemen in the

Barbara and Jack highlight Celebrities Fore Kids event
I’m Up from page 3
The first was in 1978 and my friend
Jim Warters met me at The Masters to walk
the course.
After seeing Amen Corner, we were going down the hill on No. 2 when Jim approached Barbara (they had known each
other for a couple of years), introduced me
and the two started talking.
We walked with her watching Jack play
for a couple of holes before we went on.
I related that to Barbara at Admiral’s
Cove, adding that my life could not have
gotten any better than that at that point –
being at Augusta and watching Nicklaus
while walking with her. She listened to every word I said, had eye contact with me the
entire time and when I was done, thanked
me for sharing the story. It was like she was
hanging on every word I was saying.
The same happened when I told Jack my
favorite story about him even though this
was the first time we had met. It was back in
the ’70s and my friend Larry Dorman, who
had to get home quickly to attend to a sick
family member, was invited to fly from Orlando to West Palm Beach on Jack’s plane.
I mentioned that and the fact Jack carried
Dorman’s bags to the door and Nicklaus’ response? “I probably did that, too,” he said.
Another common denominator at celebrity events is the short arms of the celebrities who can’t seem to dig deep enough into
their pockets to pay for anything – whether
it is an auction item or a fundraising game.
Signed jerseys were on offer at the Celebrities Fore Kids charity event.
One of the items on the live auction at
the dinner was a large orchid arrangement
and one of the bidders was Jack on behalf
of his wife.
Now orchids can be expensive as witnessed by Jack’s winning bid of a couple
thousand dollars. Add to that his winning
bid of a large teddy bear, which was quickly
donated back to the organization.
And at the end of the event, there was
Jack in line like everyone else waiting to pay
for his items.

He wasn’t looking for any preferential
treatment to cut the line – he waited and
chatted with the others around him. In fact
the only special request he had was asking
me if I would carry the orchid arrangement
and put it in the back of his car, making sure
it fit nicely on the back seat.
For years I wanted to play golf like Jack,

nature holes at Ibis. Baxter was just commissioned to paint triple-crown-winning
horse American Pharaoh.
Ibis Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Stephen LoGiudice said
it was an honor having Nicklaus there
to help celebrate the ribbon cutting and
grand opening.
“Everyone who walks into the building
is just astounded by the size,” said LoGiudice, who has been at Ibis for eight years.
“We have an atrium that is 23 feet tall with
skylights. It is very awe-inspiring when
you first come in. We also have the pub,
which is our sports bar and outdoor terrace. The outdoor terrace looks over going
down 10 and coming up 18 – both spectacular views. The rest of the facility has
the ballroom which overlooks the rest of
the golf course, down 1, up 10.”
LoGiudice said he was eager for and
nervous about the grand opening of the
$22 million dollar clubhouse.
“After almost 18 months of construction,
you are almost always anxious, but at the
same time you are a little nervous too because you put your heart and soul into it and
you do hope the people like it, but you don’t
know,” LoGiudice said. “Once you open and
people tell you how much they really like it,
it does make you feel really good.”
The project also including a sports
complex that opened Sept. 2014.
“That was also very well received,”
LoGiudice said. “We built a brand new
16,000-square foot fitness facility that
overlooks the pool complex. We built a resort pool complex that has a separate quiet
zone for lap swimmers. We built a Bistro
restaurant with 150 seats inside and 50
seats outside overlooking the pool and the
fountain and a beautiful spa.”
LoGiudice said at no time during the
18-month construction did any member
lose out on any activity. He said the courses
had already been reseeded and re-sprigged.
“We did Celebration grass on tees
and fairways two years ago and all of the
greens were redone with Tif Eagle grass,
so all 54 holes have already been redone,”
LoGiudice said. “Additionally with the
project we are building now, two new tennis courts and four new pickle ball courts
were opened the Thanksgiving weekend.”
The Club at Ibis currently has 1,563
memberships of the 1,871 homes. LoGiudice said as they continue to sell homes,
they will work their way to reaching the
mandatory membership it passed in November 2007. LoGiudice said those homes
were grandfathered in and as they sell they
become memberships.
LoGiudice said Ibis is “without question” the best value in the Palm Beach area.
“Our dues structure and our home
values, the amenities that you get, are significantly less than all of our competitors,”
LoGiudice said. “It is so exciting to have a
new facility. I enjoy when colleagues from
other clubs come walking through and
leave envious. It feels really good.”

Spoil yourself with a good walk at Granada
Miami-Dade Notes from page 15
to prepare for the next shot. You don’t have
to ask your imaginary caddie what club to
use. You have time to make up your mind
as you approach the ball.”
Carrillo, who went to Coral Gables High
and is a City of Miami aide to a commissioner, started playing golf in the last year,
Banyan trees, beautiful skies and the City
of Coral Gables background are staples at
Granada. Photo by Bill Van Smith
and he feels the walking at Granada is good
for his health, and that the sport of golf itself is good for his mind.
“I’m addicted to the game,” he said. “I
want to be playing it when I’m 80.”
Assuming that’s the case, he recently
caught a glimpse of his future.
“A lot of older people walk here,” he said
of Granada, a full-sized nine-hole course
that you can play twice at a reasonable price
to make it an 18-hole round. “I got paired
up recently with an older guy, 68 or so, and
he was a walker and he was so good. He had
a smaller bag and was just doing his thing.
He was kicking my butt – making pars on
nearly every hole.
“I hope I can do the same thing at age 68.”
Joining Carrillo as one of Granada’s
many walkers is Bob Stamen, a tax attorney who is 60 and was born and grew up in
Miami, going to Coral Park High. He first
played Granada as a kid “… some 40 or 50
years ago.”
Stamen addressed the longstanding
– and probably false – claim that walkers
hold up pace of play.
“It’s the player, not the pull-cart that
holds up play,” Stamen said. “Walkers don’t
hold people up. When you have two people
in a cart, you go different directions to find
each player’s ball. That can take even longer. Walkers go straight to their own ball.”
One of the people who knows most
about Granada is Frank Storm, 59, an ever-smiling face at the front counter who
knows most of the walkers and cart users
