track and protect your event favors and/or souvenir doll. Please do not post
~4~
event tickets for trade or sale anywhere at the convention. There are no
exchanges and tickets with written alterations will not be honored.
Photography and Video Information
Photography is allowed in the competitive and special exhibit areas at
specified times only. All attendees wishing to photograph during these times
must sign up on Wednesday morning at Southdown on the 4th Floor. Pictures
may be used for commercial purposes only if they meet the stipulations of
the ‘Exhibitor and Photographer Agreement.’
Images of people or items exhibited at any UFDC function, if used
commercially, must include the following caption: ‘Photographed at the
United Federation of Doll Clubs, Inc. Annual Convention.’ All use of any
images must be in compliance with the stipulations of the ‘Exhibitor and
Photographer Agreement.’
By registering for the Annual Convention, attendees agree that their image,
or images of items they exhibit at this convention, may be used by UFDC
without any additional recognition, fees or compensation.
Convention Volunteers
Over 700 volunteers are needed each year to make the convention run
smoothly. One of the best ways to make new friends and learn more about
UFDC is to become a volunteer. There are a wide variety of volunteer jobs
available. Go to the Mini Office in the Coat Room on the 5th Floor to find
the right job for you. UFDC appreciates the members who volunteer their
time during a busy convention week. After sharing three hours of volunteer
time, you will qualify for a convention charm or tie tack. Ask your chairman
for a voucher you can turn in at the Mini Office. This is a gift of appreciation
from UFDC.
Convention Momentos
The artwork of Susan Beatrice Pearse lent itself for some fun convention doll
themed momentos this year. Very limited and affordably priced editions of
aprons (both adult and doll sized), postcards, tote bags, mouse pads and pins
will be available. You will find them in the UFDC Supply Booth. The UFDC
Supply Booth also offers you the opportunity to purchase UFDC pins for
members and club officers. Educational and fundraising items are also
available in the UFDC Supply Booth. The Supply Booth is only open during
~5~
posted Salesroom hours. Be sure to include a visit during the week and select
special souvenirs for friends back home.
Convention Companion Piece Sales for the Souvenir Doll
Wardrobe items and the companion doll to this year’s souvenir doll will be
available for purchase beginning on Monday, July 23 rd. Monday purchases
of these items may be made by going to the Grand Ballroom Foyer on the 5 th
Floor.
Convention Activities
Although Convention officially opens on Tuesday evening there are some
fun activities planned for those of you who want to arrive early. Kicking off
the pre-convention activities is a luncheon featuring a trip to Mardi Gras
World on Monday. Attendees will also receive a doll by artist Christine
Shively.
For those attendees who would like to tour on their own, the BeauregardKeyes House in the Vieux Carré, is highly recommended. It is located at
1113 Chartres Street, New Orleans, LA 70116, USA. Telephone: (504)5237257. The childhood home of author Frances Parkinson Keyes, it contains
her collection of her childhood dolls and the dolls she collected as an adult.
Early birds can also drop-in to the Dynamic Doll Dialogues. Doll enthusiasts
will lead round-table discussions on a variety of topics both Monday
afternoon and Tuesday morning. Nine participants can be accommodated at
each table, with discussions lasting about 45 minutes. Share your interests
with others or learn about something new to you! It can be a great
experience, no pre-registration is required and no fee is charged. A schedule
of topics will be posted at the entrance.
If you are attending your first UFDC Convention, don’t miss the Newcomers’
Orientation Program on Monday afternoon. The program is designed to get
you started on the right foot and make your convention experience more
enjoyable. It will begin at 4:00 pm in the Napoleon Ball Rooms D2/D3 on the
3rd Floor. Meet other newcomers and start making new doll friends.
Monday evening plan to attend the 2 nd annual “At Your Service” Open
House. Meet your Officers and Regional Directors while enjoying an ice
cream sundae.

One of the greatest study opportunities for any doll collector is the
Competitive Exhibits. Attending UFDC members are encouraged to
participate in this educational and rewarding experience. Participants may
choose from hundreds of classifications in which to enter dolls from their
private collections into competition with other dolls. Enjoy seeing examples
similar to yours, compare their attributes and learn more about your own
selections. The list of categories and classes can be found in the ‘Competitive
Exhibits’ booklet included in this mailing. Entry forms are also included.
Mark June 20th on your calendar—entries must be postmarked by that date.
Help make the Competitive Exhibits spectacular!
Throughout the week, programs will be presented by talented and
knowledgeable individuals. Topics will vary from antique to modern,
domestic to foreign. Take a break, sit down and be entertained!
Want to meet other collectors that share your interests? Look for gatherings
listed in the tentative schedule. UFDC provides space for special interest and
collector groups to gather during the week. Everyone is welcome and no fee
is charged.
Thursday afternoon offers an opportunity to take a Highlight Tour of the
Competitive Exhibits presented by the competitive exhibit judges. Learn
more about the judging process and what it takes to earn that blue ribbon!
The tours are free, but you must register in advance on Wednesday morning
(Grand Ballroom Foyer on the 5th Floor).
The Open Forum is an informal meeting on Wednesday afternoon designed
to give members an opportunity to offer suggestions or ask questions of the
UFDC Officers. Learn what others want to know or get answers to your own
questions. Proper conduct and decorum will be observed. The forum will be
held in the Napoleon Ballroom on the 3rd Floor.
The Annual Business Meeting is the reason for holding our convention. All
UFDC members are encouraged to attend. Club Delegates will vote on
matters pertaining to the functions of UFDC. Officers of the organization
present annual reports and Delegates elect Board Members at this meeting.
The meeting will be held Thursday morning. Delegates must check-in prior
to the meeting at the Registration Desk in the Napoleon Foyer on the 3rd
~7~
Floor. All members are required to show their UFDC membership card at
the door for admission. No other activities are scheduled during this time.
Stop by the Publishers’ Preview on Thursday evening to discover the latest in
doll related publications (Cornet, 8th Floor). Book publishers, authors and
other print representatives will present the latest releases for your
consideration. Have your favorite author sign a copy of their latest book or
sign up for a doll magazine subscription.
Want to do some doll shopping? Head to the UFDC Salesroom. Each year
our dealers assemble the finest selection of superb dolls and related
merchandise to rival anything found in great doll museums. The convention
offers attendees a four-day opportunity to admire, and purchase, splendid
examples of dolls in every category. The dealers, who are knowledgeable
collectors themselves, are always willing to share their expertise. Mark your
schedule to spend several hours of study, whether buying or browsing, in the
UFDC Salesroom.
ReAL Services offers attendees the opportunity to attend informative
Seminars, which are small classes of in-depth study of interest to any doll
collector. Space is limited and tickets are required. Those without a ticket
will not be admitted. Don’t show-up late, spaces not occupied ten minutes
after the published start time of a seminar will be forfeited and sold to
attendees waiting in line outside the seminar rooms. No refunds will be
given to students who do not check-in on time. Use the request form
included in this mailing to sign-up in advance.
Workshops are developed and presented by many talented UFDC members
who are also artists and craftsmen in their own right. Each class has been
selected to challenge the student with new skills, or entertain them in
creating something special. Class size may depend on the complexity of the
project, the time required to complete the item and the wishes of the
instructor within space limitations. Workshop projects are available for
viewing on the UFDC website at www.ufdc.org.
Special Ticketed Theme Events include breakfasts, luncheons and dinners.
The ticket price for these events is based on the combined cost of the event
favor, program and meal. These events are special themed parties that have
been planned to offer you a variety of fees and event favors. Space is limited
~8~
and only ticket holders will be admitted. Make your selections in advance on
the Event Request Form included in this mailing.
Razzy Snazzy Raging Cajun Jamboree
A fun filled karaoke evening just for you and your convention friends old
and new. This UFDC fundraiser boasts our own man of music, Al Edward as
MC with singable, danceable non-stop music provided by the resourceful
Nada Christensen. Light hearted performances will be contributed by brave
members. Come for the good cause, good friendship and good fun.

Special Exhibits
One of the highlights of any UFDC convention is the Special Exhibits.
This year is no different. All the exhibits are displayed on the 8th
Floor in the Salons. The wonderful diversity of the exhibits will
appeal to every attendee. The wonderful generosity of the exhibitors
makes this all happen.
The Queen’s Jubilee – This year marks Queen Elizabeth’s Royal
Jubilee as she celebrates her 60th year on the throne. This exhibit will
tell her story and look back at another Queen’s Jubilee, that of
Elizabeth’s great grandmother, Victoria. Under the direction of
Shirley Karaba this exhibit will have a “royal” touch.
The Vogue Doll Company – The Vogue Doll Company began its
story almost ninety years ago when Jennie Graves opened her shop in
1922. This exhibit will highlight the history of an American dollmaking giant whose motto is “The Main Ingredient is Love”.
Exquisite Ephemera – This display of Victorian scrap work,
advertising cards and chocolate trading cards comes from the
personal collection of Samy Odin. Covering a period from 1875 to
1915, the ephemera shows how children were depicted in advertising
and scrap work.
The Artwork of Susan Beatrice Pearse – This exhibit will examine the
work of the convention artist. Susan Beatrice Pearse was born in 1878
and died at the age of 102. During her long and prolific career she
produced some of the most charming images of children and dolls
ever produced.
A Stitch in Time - Folk Art Black Cloth Dolls – 1800’s to Present
Joyce Stamps curates this special exhibit of folk art black cloth dolls,
assisted by members of the Black Gold Doll Club of New England.
These dolls have been loved and survived over the years. Some of
~ 10 ~
these rare cloth dolls also had another purpose other than playthings.
The early dolls reflect the times they were made in. Members from
other doll clubs in Region 15, Region 11 and Region 8 will be lending
dolls for this historically very important and moving exhibit.
A Doll Jambalaya - This exhibit adds some Louisiana flavor to this
year’s convention.
Louisiana has a rich and unique history and
culture. This display shares something of this State’s story through
its dolls. Ranging from Creole to Louisiana artist dolls this exhibit
will be as diverse as the people of Louisiana are themselves. Under
the direction of Cynthia Orgeron and the Northshore Doll Club this
exhibit will offer a taste of local doll cuisine.
Friendship Dolls – Alan Scott Pate brings together two Japanese
Friendship dolls never before displayed together in the United States.
58 of these dolls were sent by Japan to the United States in 1927.
Today only 46 of them are accounted for including the last of these
dolls which was only recently discovered. This last doll, Miss #46, will
be unveiled in New Orleans.

Dinner with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Mardi Gras 1950
Wednesday, July 25th 7:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.
In 1950, the talk of New Orleans was that a real king and his consort would

their honor. The big question was whether or not they would honor the
Carnival rules and bow to the Mardi Gras Kings and Queens. The 16 ½ inch
doll for the evening is designed by Joan Greene. Joan Greene will also be
the featured speaker for the evening. In a first for UFDC this doll won an
award at IDEX in 2012 and was entered as a limited edition doll made
specifically for this UFDC event.
Deborah Jenkines and the Charm of
Charleston Doll Club have been hard at work to make this an evening of
elegance and grandeur befitting a future King.

There’s Nothing New Under the Sun
Tuesday, July 24th, 9:00 a.m. – Noon
Wednesday, July 25th, 9:00 a.m. - Noon
What do antique dolls and their counterpart BJD’s have in common? Jennifer
Kohn Murtha states “When I first saw ball jointed dolls,(BJDs) I was struck
by their sass and attitude, reminiscent of 1960s wire armature Japanese
Bradley dolls; but BJDs are, as I discovered, fundamentally different. Made
from resin or vinyl, they have ingenious ball joints which make them
wonderfully poseable, plus removable eyes and wigs, making them
customizable. They are unique to this era, right? We’ll explore the premise
that “There’s Nothing New Under the Sun” and find out whether that’s true,
with examples both old and …well, current.”
Hitty, Yesterday and Today – Her Three Lives
Tuesday, July 24th, 9:00 a.m. – Noon
Wednesday, July 25th, 9:00 a.m. - Noon
Although doll carver Judy Brown had been carving wood dolls since the mid
1970’s, she didn’t become acquainted with the doll Hitty or the book Hitty,
Her First Hundred Years until 1983. She carved her first Hitty the following
year at the request of a friend who owned the book. Judy fell in love and
even after carving over 1,000 Hittys, she still delights in the story of the little
doll and how she came to tell her story and of the two women who brought
her to us. Some 83 years after the book publication, Hitty’s life is virtual as
well as real as children and adults continue to research and play with the
Hitty replicas.

Antique Doll Historical Costuming: the Victorian Era 1850 - 1900:
The Necessity of Dressing Your Doll Properly
Friday, July 27th, 9:00 a.m. - Noon
A costumer's job is not only to fabricate a garment but to historically
authenticate the period in which the doll has been produced. This not only
adds to the doll's wardrobe but if properly studied, can be used as a tool for
future research. The costumer then becomes not only the recorder of
history but the "keeper of fact" and has the responsibility to create garments
that use only the proper fabric, style, trim, sewing technique, and
appearance. All of these very important aspects of the Victorian Era will be
discussed at length with Andrea Azar who has degrees in design and
costuming, judges for UFDC, costumes theater productions, and lectures on
all periods of costume.

Dynamic Doll Dialogues

dolls for identification and discussion. There is no pre-registration and no
fee.
Most of the dialogues will be repeated at various times to allow attendees to
participate in several discussions. The most current schedule of topics will be
posted at the entrance to the Napoleon Ballroom on the 3rd Floor. Stop-by
and discover friends with your same doll interests!
