On March 5, 1982 Ray and Beverly Berry
On March 5, 1982 Ray and Beverly Berry opened The Fresh Market’s first store in Greensboro, North Carolina. The
fulfillment of a dream, The Fresh Market was founded with one simple goal in mind: to bring friends, family and neighbors
high-quality perishable products in a warm and friendly atmosphere with a high level of customer service.
Soon after opening the Greensboro store, the company added several other stores in both North Carolina and South
Carolina. In 1988, The Fresh Market opened its first store outside the Carolinas in Knoxville, Tennessee. The 1990s
brought further expansion into Georgia, Virginia and Florida. Since 2000, the company has expanded into Kentucky,
Alabama, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Louisiana, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Wisconsin and Mississippi.
Over the past two decades, The Fresh Market has grown to a chain of more than 90 stores in 19 states, located in the
Southeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. The company plans for continued expansion in these areas as well as
entry into new markets throughout the United States.
The Fresh Market is a family-owned, privately held company and is an equal opportunity employer. The company
continues to focus on providing customers with a unique grocery shopping experience in a warm and inviting atmosphere,
featuring high-quality perishables, distinctive foods and exceptional customer service.

Taste, quality and value are always the primary considerations in selecting

believes that providing local options gives its customers products with
superior flavor and freshness while benefiting local economies. The Fresh

Since it first opened, The Fresh Market has been providing customers with
quality items that are available only at its stores, such as prepared foods,
custom cuts of meat and bulk spices. In recent years, the The Fresh Market’s
line of TFM-branded products has grown significantly and continues to do
so. The company approaches its private label development in two ways:
