MRI Patient Stereo Sound System Specifications and Pricing
Evaluation
Equipment
Sound
Quality
Operator
Control
An MRI System Evaluation Form is typically filled out, providing the cable sizes:
•
Measurements must be taken to specify the cable length from the stereo to the RF
Penetration Panel
•
Measurements must be taken to specify the cable length from the RF Penetration
Panel to the Patient Acoustic Interface
The type of MRI System must be identified:
•
Shielded or Non-Shielded
•
Field Strength
It must be determined who will install the MRI Patient Stereo Sound System
Easily installed by Site Engineer or Facility Staff
Installation is available
Each System consists of the following items:
•
AM/FM Hi-Fi Stereo System with optional source from CD-Player or iPod Dock.
External Sources can be used, such as Satellite Radio or Computer Sound Output.
•
Patient communications – Patients hear stereo music and the Technologist can
speak into a desktop microphone and communicate into the patient headphones
•
Coaxial Cables are custom cut, using BNC Connectors - utilize either spare BNC
connectors or newly installed BNC connectors on the Scan Room RF Penetration
Panel
•
A Patient Acoustic Interface is placed proximal to the magnet entry point,
converting audio signals into sound for the patient’s plastic headphones
•
Plastic Headphones and approximately 100-pairs of replacement foam eartips
•
Plastic headphone holder clips help to hang up the headphones to keep them clean
•
The microphone sits atop a desk mike stand, and can be easily located at the most
convenient location for the operator regardless of where the stereo system is placed

The audio is carried a short distance from the Patient Acoustic Interface to the plastic
headphones. It is recommended that the vinyl tubing used to carry the audio to the
headphones, be minimized if possible to yield optimal audio. Noise Reduction Headphones
are optionally available to cup around the ear to help reduce noise produced by the MRI
Scanner. The music should be comfortably set to a level that can be easily heard by the
patient, but not so loud that it causes distortion or patient discomfort.
•
There are separate audio level adjustments for the patient and the speakers
in the area where the Technologist is located. The operator can
independently control their sound level without affecting the patient sound
levels. If so desired, the music can be turned off in the operator area, and
only heard by the patient. Both levels of sound are independent of each
other.
•
The operator presses a ‘Talk” button on the desktop microphone and
speaks when he/she wishes to convey something to the patient. A volume
control enables the Operator to raise or lower the volume sensitivity for the
microphone level.
•
When the patient replies to the operator, the operator will typically hear the
patient reply back via the patient intercom that is built into the MRI
system.

Interface
Electrical
Antenna
Warranty
The patient acoustic interface, known as a PAI is a white box, which is 9” wide and
6” high (about the size of a shoe box), containing the audio transducers which
convert electrical sound signals to actual audio. There are some ferrous components
in the PAI, and care should be exercised when placing this unit in the presence of
High Magnetic Fields. If the MRI Magnet is a shielded magnet, the PAI can most
likely be affixed to the floor near the magnet entry point, using industrial strength
Velcro or non-ferrous screws. If the magnet is not a shielded magnet, the PAI may
have to be mounted in an area less likely to be subjected to the magnetic pull of the
MRI magnet. If the length of tubing must be longer than 10 feet, a special request
can be made for custom cut vinyl tubing.

All stereo system components are powered by AC power cords.
The Bose and Polk Audio Stereo Systems operate from 110-Volt 50Hz
The Amplifier can be operated from either 110-volt or 220-Volt power
A switched extension cord is provided, to plug in all system components
The equipment should be plugged into an isolated (usually orange)
electrical outlet if possible. All equipment should use a common ground
The shielding of your building may make it necessary to use an antenna to improve
radio reception. This antenna can be a simple wire type antenna, mounted in the
ceiling tiles, but should be directed away from the scan room, as the scan room
shielding actually suppresses RF signals from most radio stations. You may choose
to place an antenna outside your facility, and run the wiring down to the tuner to
receive optimal AM and FM reception. If you want to just make it real easy, you
can avoid having to play radio stations, and just play music from an iPod or CD
player with a selection of music suited to most patient’s listening preferences such
as jazz, classical, new-age, country & western, rap and classic rock.
Scan Sound, Inc. warranties the Patient Acoustic Interface against manufacturing
defects for a period of 1 year. The manufacturer’s warranty for each of the AM/FM
stereo system components is generally 1-year, based on the manufacturer’s own
specified warranty. Any returned items such as Stereo Systems, Amplifiers,
Microphones and Preamplifiers must be made within 30-days, and must be in new
condition, returned in the original cartons, wrapped intact with all associated
accessories and manuals and be pre-authorized with a Return Material Authorization
Number clearly marked on the outside of the package and on the packing list in
order to obtain credit for the return.
The customer is responsible for all shipping costs for repairs, accessories and or
replacement parts, unless an item received defective or damaged in shipment.
Installation The installation is typically done by an MRI Service Engineer, Biomed or Clinical
Engineering personnel. You can designate a person of your choosing who
understands audio hook-up, however you want to be sure this individual is aware of
how to work around high magnetic fields. Home Theater installation companies do a
professional job at low cost, however they usually need guidance on how to work
inside the scan room nearby the high-magnetic field of the MRI System.
All systems are sold in kit form, and can be easily installed by your designated
installer using the provided manual. The system can typically be installed in less
than two hours. It may take longer if the cables must be routed through conduits,
under floor tiles or above ceiling tiles. Scan Sound can assist via telephone.
If you are having difficulty finding someone to install the MRI Stereo Kit, just
contact Scan Sound and we will try to find a qualified installer in your area.
