29th – 31st and the Christmas Boat Lane Parade on December 11th. The strength of
our Chamber is our volunteer base. These events would not happen without your
support. We still need a lot of volunteers to make this year’s RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff
Festival successful. Our needs include ticket sellers, crowd management, soda booth,
and greeters at the front gate. Please pitch in to make this year a fantastic event.

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
RICHARD ALLEN
Space Center Houston
A Message from the
President & CEO
October 1st begins the New Year at the
Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and
we have already begun this year with a Bang!
Congratulations to Richard Allen with Space
Center Houston, our new Chairman of the Board
for 2010 - 2011. Richard began laying the foundation for his term as Chairman of the Board as
soon as he was elected by our Board of Directors
back in July by naming the new Division Chairmen and Affiliate Liaisons for the upcoming year.
These hardworking volunteers help us to achieve
our goals that are set by our Board of Directors
in the Program of Work. If you are interested in
working on one of our committees this year contact me at [email protected].
I am happy to announce that Trustmark Bank
has again upgraded their Chamber membership as a Distinguished Investor from a “Director’s
Council” to our “President’s Council” level. As
a “President’s Council” Distinguished Investor,
they have committed a $3,000 investment for
2010 - 2011, increasing their visibility within our
Chamber as well as enhancing the Chamber’s
programs in the upcoming year. In return for their
investment, Trustmark Bank receives a customized packet of benefits and recognition best suited for their business plan. I’d like to thank Vice
President and Branch Manager Hedy Holland for
continuing their commitment to our Chamber.
Our Distinguished Investors' participation helps us
achieve our goals and allows us to promote the
Clear Lake/Bay Area Houston region. If you want
to learn more about becoming a Distinguished
Investor and join this esteemed group of shareholders in our Chamber, please contact me or
Stephanie Rice, our Director of Membership at
281/488-7676 today!
What a BLAST we had at the 48th Annual
Chairman’s Ball on Saturday, September 25th at
Lakewood Yacht Club celebrating the achievements of our 2009 - 2010 Chamber year! The Ball
was Chaired by Cathy Turner with Hearst Media
Services and the theme was “2010 – A Chamber
Odyssey”. This special evening was dedicated to
honoring Chairman of the Board Michael Divine
with Visiting Angels, Living Assistance Services,
our retiring Board members and Division Chairmen for a job well done this past year. Congratulations Michael for a great year and a STELLAR
evening of celebration.
Michael, on behalf of our Chamber staff, I
would like to thank you for a wonderful year. We
have appreciated your support of all our Chamber efforts as well as your dedication to making this year a success. Additionally, thank you
for the beautiful roses sent to each member of
the Chamber staff, it was a most generous and
thoughtful gift. You know we enjoyed working
with you, thank you for thinking of us!

RE/MAX
Ballunar Liftoff Festival
NEAL MINSON
Chamber Intern
Brigham Young University
A full moon may not rise
for Halloween weekend,
but hot air balloons surely
will as the 17th Annual RE/
MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival gains lift October 29th,
30th, and 31st.
This year will include
many exciting areas for
people to enjoy. Children
will get a hands-on look at
the Clear Lake Area communities’ fire trucks, police
cars, ambulances, and
rescue equipment from
antiques to the latest innovations during the “Salute
to Public Safety” exposition
starting Saturday morning,
October 30th, from 10:00
a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Radio Disney is back,
and will appear soon after,
from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Kids can dance to Disney’s
Top 30 hits, ranging from
Selena Gomez to the Jonas Brothers and Hannah
Montana, and they can
look forward to games,
contests, and perhaps winning some prizes.
A new event that will
be taking place this year
Saturday afternoon, is Mad
Science of Houston. This
“edu-tainment” area will
spark the imagination and
wonder of all ages with attractions like a slime booth,
superball factory, and
awesome airplanes. The
fun doesn’t stop there, as
Mad Science will bring in
a little Halloween fun with
bubbling potions and a
melting witches head!
Speaking of a little Halloween fun, Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the
viewing area is the Halloween Balloon Bash. Hot
air balloon pilots will place
their Halloween decorated
baskets around the site for
kids to trick-or-treat.
This has been an anticipated Clear Lake Area
tradition, since the RE/MAX
Ballunar Liftoff Festival began in 1993. Balloon pilot
Steve Lombardi and Richard Filip, CEO/Regional
Owner of RE/MAX of Texas, began this tradition to
commemorate the 200th
anniversary of the first
manned flight in America.
The purpose of the Festival is to encourage young
people to study mathematics and science and to
inform the public about the
contributions aviation and
space exploration make to
our everyday lives.
This
exciting
event
could not be a reality without the great efforts of hundreds of volunteers every
year. Festival volunteers
receive free admission into
the festival for themselves
and their passengers, free
parking and non-alcoholic
beverages while they are
working. Organizations
and businesses volunteering in groups have a great
opportunity to present
themselves to the public
by wearing shirts or hats
that represent their organization. Young people can
receive a letter confirming
their volunteer hours to be
used for Honor Society, college applications and other civic minded activities.
Volunteers are needed
to work different areas from
6:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m.
at night. Areas include
crowd management, entrance greeters, drink trailers, ticket trailers, and a
beer garden. Whether a
few hours can be afforded
or the entire day, any and
all volunteers will be greatly appreciated. There are
still opportunities open, so
quickly sign up to take advantage of helping make
this beloved event a success!
