Greetings from the NIC Foundation and
Alumni Association
We are sending you this 2007 Year in Review to keep you informed about the latest
happenings at NIC, how your investments are improving the lives of thousands each
year, and to share areas of need you may be interested in supporting.
As friends and alumni of North Idaho College, you play an extremely important role in
the future of NIC.
You understand that NIC makes an important contribution to the social, cultural,
and economic quality of life throughout our region. And, like public institutions
everywhere, NIC must look beyond its traditional sources of support. Property
taxes, state appropriations, and student tuition must be supplemented with private
donations if the college is to maintain the level of educational excellence the people
of North Idaho deserve.
Please let us know if you find this report valuable and how we might improve it.
Complete our brief survey at www.nic.edu/foundation by December 31, 2007, and
you will be entered to win two great prizes! See the back cover for details.
Warmest Regards,

NIC was born during the challenges of
the Great Depression on the heels of
incredible hard work and perseverance
by our community’s forefathers. With
endorsements by businesses, the
NIC’s history will soon be unveiled in a
new book titled “The Gathering Place:
A History of North Idaho College.” The
book will be available in the fall of 2008
as part of NIC’s 75th Diamond Jubilee
Celebration.
Stay tuned for more community-wide
birthday celebration details!
“NIC was the most affordable option for me. Most people
think that there’s nothing to do at a community college, but
that’s not true of NIC. There’s intramural sports, an outdoor
recreation program, collegiate sports, and an activities center
with shuffleboard, pool and a plasma TV. It’s not just an
education here, it feels like home.”

awards and grants
The North Idaho College
Foundation awarded $343,530
in scholarships to 362 students in
the 2006-2007 school year. The
scholarships were made possible
through contributions from literally
hundreds of donors.
“Scholarships provide help
and hope for students who
might not otherwise be able to
pursue their dreams,” said NIC
Foundation Executive Director
Rayelle Anderson. “Scholarships
are a solid investment and provide
opportunities and encouragement
for those fortunate enough to be
assisted by a scholarship award.”
The NIC Foundation awarded
19 grants for a total of $50,707
in 2006-07 through the NIC
Foundation Grant Program,
which is funded by annual
donations and Really BIG Raffle
proceeds. Since 1994, the
NIC Foundation has awarded
149 grants totaling $668,887
to faculty, staff, and student
groups at NIC through the grant
program.

“This scholarship means a lot
to me. It demonstrates that I’ve
done something positive with
my life. It helps me support my
family while I go to school and
helps decrease the amount of
loans, which directly influences
how much education I can
attain. Mostly it just means I’m
on the right track to my future.”

Elisabeth Scates, who passed
away in January 2007, cared
about her community and North
Idaho College. She believed in
education and was committed
to giving—both in life and in
death.
Through her will, Elisabeth
made arrangements to
contribute $12,000 to benefit
the John Dunlop Memorial
Scholarship, which she and her
husband of 22 years, retired
dentist Robert (Bob) Scates,
established in 2003 in memory
of Elisabeth’s son John Dunlop.
Dunlop, who attended NIC in
1968-1969, died at a young age
and Elisabeth wanted to ensure
he was remembered through a
fund to help NIC students.
“This scholarship fund is a
wonderful example of how a
loved one’s memory can live
on forever through charitable
giving,” said NIC Foundation
Executive Director Rayelle
Anderson. “NIC students will
continue to reap the rewards
of the Scates’ philanthropy for
years to come.”

NIC Foundation and Alumni Year in Review
NIC Alumni Association presents annual
alumni awards
Alumni of the Year Mikki Stevens NIC Culinary Arts
Instructor Mikki
Stevens, ’68, was
selected by the NIC
Alumni Association
as the 2007 Alumni
of the Year for her
commitment to
both the college and
the community.
Stevens was born and raised in Coeur
d’Alene and is a Coeur d’Alene High
School graduate. She earned an
associate’s degree from NIC in 1968 and
was active at the community college.
She later earned a master’s degree
in adult and organizational learning
from the University of Idaho and has
continued to take classes throughout
her career. Stevens has worked as an
instructor in NIC’s Culinary Arts program
since 1999.
Thirteen years ago, Stevens founded the
Red Hot Mamas, a nonprofit dance and
comedy troupe.
“Mikki is well-known and loved
wherever she goes,” said NIC Alumni
Relations Coordinator Sara Fladeland.
“With her service to the college and
community, including more than 25
service organizations, she is most
deserving of this award.”
Honorary Alumni of the Year Edie McCormick
NIC Ponderay
Center Educational
Resource
Coordinator
Edie McCormick
was selected as
the NIC Alumni
Association’s 2007
Honorary Alumnus
of the Year in
honor of her service to NIC.
In 2000, McCormick was hired as the
coordinator of NIC’s first outreach
center, the NIC Ponderay Center,
which opened that same year. Since
then, McCormick has helped grow the
center’s classes and services and has
helped more than 2,700 students from
Bonner and Boundary counties enroll in
NIC classes at the center.
“Although McCormick isn’t technically
an alum, she cares deeply about NIC and
believes in its mission,” Sara Fladeland
said. “She is responsible for many
students’ success and we’re pleased to
be able to honor her in this way.”
Although NIC provides wonderful
educational opportunities at a reasonable
price, the reality is that the majority
of our students would be unable to
attend college without the assistance of
scholarships, grants, and student loans.
Wild Game Feast: Another Wild success
Things get a little wild for the NIC Alumni
Association each winter, when the
association hosts the Wild Game Feast,
an event highlighted with a five-course,
gourmet meal featuring wild game
cuisine. More than 150 people attended
the 2007 Wild Game Feast, raising more
than $7,500 for student scholarships.
These proceeds provided scholarships to
11 deserving students for the 2007-2008
academic year.

New Leadership at NIC
The North Idaho College Board of Trustees announced in July of 2007 the selection
of Priscilla Bell, Ph.D., as the college’s eighth president. The selection of Bell
concluded a national search process, guided by the Association of Community College
Trustees, to replace former NIC President Michael Burke after he accepted a position
as president of San Jose City College in California.
Bell most recently served as president of Highline Community College in Des Moines,
Wash., from 2000-2006. Prior to Highline, Bell served as president of FultonMontgomery Community College in Johnstown, N.Y., from 1995-2000.
“I am committed to leading NIC to an even better, brighter future,” Bell said. “NIC is
and will remain the higher education institution of hope, opportunity, and choice for
our region – the place where students achieve their dreams. Our region is changing
rapidly and NIC will change with it.”
“We want to provide
the best educational
opportunities possible to
the residents of this area
while meeting the training
needs expected of us by
the community.”

To address the community’s needs, Bell organized industry, civic, and economic
leaders to provide input on how the college could better contribute to the overall
economic health of the region. The group, called Partners in Education, will assist the
college in identifying labor market needs as well as developing short- and long-term
educational programs to help meet those needs.

Fort was working at Wal-Mart and going

computer technician for the Kellogg

of the NIC Alumni Association.
“I didn’t really know which one would
be the best,” Fort said. “A job and have
a decent paycheck with Wal-Mart or go
to school and not have an income for

decided to go with the one that came

NIC Foundation and Alumni Year in Review
NIC Alumni Association presents annual
alumni awards
Alumni of the Year Mikki Stevens NIC Culinary Arts
Instructor Mikki
Stevens, ’68, was
selected by the NIC
Alumni Association
as the 2007 Alumni
of the Year for her
commitment to
both the college and
the community.
Stevens was born and raised in Coeur
d’Alene and is a Coeur d’Alene High
School graduate. She earned an
associate’s degree from NIC in 1968 and
was active at the community college.
She later earned a master’s degree
in adult and organizational learning
from the University of Idaho and has
continued to take classes throughout
her career. Stevens has worked as an
instructor in NIC’s Culinary Arts program
since 1999.
Thirteen years ago, Stevens founded the
Red Hot Mamas, a nonprofit dance and
comedy troupe.
“Mikki is well-known and loved
wherever she goes,” said NIC Alumni
Relations Coordinator Sara Fladeland.
“With her service to the college and
community, including more than 25
service organizations, she is most
deserving of this award.”
Honorary Alumni of the Year Edie McCormick
NIC Ponderay
Center Educational
Resource
Coordinator
Edie McCormick
was selected as
the NIC Alumni
Association’s 2007
Honorary Alumnus
of the Year in
honor of her service to NIC.
In 2000, McCormick was hired as the
coordinator of NIC’s first outreach
center, the NIC Ponderay Center,
which opened that same year. Since
then, McCormick has helped grow the
center’s classes and services and has
helped more than 2,700 students from
Bonner and Boundary counties enroll in
NIC classes at the center.
“Although McCormick isn’t technically
an alum, she cares deeply about NIC and
believes in its mission,” Sara Fladeland
said. “She is responsible for many
students’ success and we’re pleased to
be able to honor her in this way.”
Although NIC provides wonderful
educational opportunities at a reasonable
price, the reality is that the majority
of our students would be unable to
attend college without the assistance of
scholarships, grants, and student loans.
Wild Game Feast: Another Wild success
Things get a little wild for the NIC Alumni
Association each winter, when the
association hosts the Wild Game Feast,
an event highlighted with a five-course,
gourmet meal featuring wild game
cuisine. More than 150 people attended
the 2007 Wild Game Feast, raising more
than $7,500 for student scholarships.
These proceeds provided scholarships to
11 deserving students for the 2007-2008
academic year.

student’s daughter
Elisabeth Scates, who passed
away in January 2007, cared
about her community and North
Idaho College. She believed in
education and was committed
to giving—both in life and in
death.
Through her will, Elisabeth
made arrangements to
contribute $12,000 to benefit
the John Dunlop Memorial
Scholarship, which she and her
husband of 22 years, retired
dentist Robert (Bob) Scates,
established in 2003 in memory
of Elisabeth’s son John Dunlop.
Dunlop, who attended NIC in
1968-1969, died at a young age
and Elisabeth wanted to ensure
he was remembered through a
fund to help NIC students.
“This scholarship fund is a
wonderful example of how a
loved one’s memory can live
on forever through charitable
giving,” said NIC Foundation
Executive Director Rayelle
Anderson. “NIC students will
continue to reap the rewards
of the Scates’ philanthropy for
years to come.”

awards and grants
The North Idaho College
Foundation awarded $343,530
in scholarships to 362 students in
the 2006-2007 school year. The
scholarships were made possible
through contributions from literally
hundreds of donors.
“Scholarships provide help
and hope for students who
might not otherwise be able to
pursue their dreams,” said NIC
Foundation Executive Director
Rayelle Anderson. “Scholarships
are a solid investment and provide
opportunities and encouragement
for those fortunate enough to be
assisted by a scholarship award.”
The NIC Foundation awarded
19 grants for a total of $50,707
in 2006-07 through the NIC
Foundation Grant Program,
which is funded by annual
donations and Really BIG Raffle
proceeds. Since 1994, the
NIC Foundation has awarded
149 grants totaling $668,887
to faculty, staff, and student
groups at NIC through the grant
program.

Each November, the NIC

and the many deserving students
who benefit from their philanthropy
for the annual Fall Scholarship
Celebration as a way for both groups to
learn more about each other.

“This scholarship means a lot
to me. It demonstrates that I’ve
done something positive with
my life. It helps me support my
family while I go to school and
helps decrease the amount of
loans, which directly influences
how much education I can
attain. Mostly it just means I’m
on the right track to my future.”

Warmest Regards,
Rayelle Anderson, CFRE

NIC was born during the challenges of
the Great Depression on the heels of
incredible hard work and perseverance
by our community’s forefathers. With
endorsements by businesses, the
NIC’s history will soon be unveiled in a
new book titled “The Gathering Place:
A History of North Idaho College.” The
book will be available in the fall of 2008
as part of NIC’s 75th Diamond Jubilee
Celebration.
Stay tuned for more community-wide
birthday celebration details!
“NIC was the most affordable option for me. Most people
think that there’s nothing to do at a community college, but
that’s not true of NIC. There’s intramural sports, an outdoor
recreation program, collegiate sports, and an activities center
with shuffleboard, pool and a plasma TV. It’s not just an
education here, it feels like home.”
– Nate Knaggs, 2007-2008 general studies major
