PATRICIA VONNE
FIREBIRD
New Album featuring 11 stunning new tracks!
Latin Roots Rocker and Troubadour Patricia Vonne releases “Firebird”
Austin TX, - Patricia Vonne’s remarkable third release “Firebird” is the payoff for
seven years of hard work and cements the bilingual songstress’s ability to deliver a
perfect balance of Tex-Mex and roots-rock with strength, purpose and femininity.
Vonne’s excellent songwriting has a flare for romance, drama and fantasy, even
while chronicling the ups and downs of everyday life.
“Firebird” opens with the haunting “Missing Women” a tribute to the hundreds
of women murdered in Juarez, Mexico. Vonne made several trips to Juarez doing
research for the song and shooting a video. She had the opportunity to meet
many of the mothers of the victims’ and has become very close to the project and
in hopes of bringing more awareness to the campaign she has donated the song
as a free download on the Amnesty International’s website: www.amnestyusa.org.
The CD features a Spanish version of the same song, “Mujeres Desaparecidas” as
a bonus track.
Vonne’s husband and long time musical partner, Robert LaRoche, co-wrote five
of the ten tunes and his stellar guitar work is the perfect accompaniment for
Vonne’s sultry vocals. They duet on the beautiful “Battle Scars”. On “Firebird”
Vonne works with an all star cast of musicians including Rick Del Castillo, Michael
Hardwick, Steven Medina Hufsteter, Tito Larriva, David Perales, Michael Ramos, Joe
Reyes, Scott Garber, Dony Wynn, Elizabeth Rodriguez, and Carl Thiel.
Every song on “Firebird” carries a great personal story from Vonne. She co-wrote
with her childhood musical hero, Johnny Reno on “Hot Rod Heart,” and was
so inspired by visiting the home of late Spanish poet, Federico Garcia Lorca in
Granada, Spain that she wrote “La Huerta de San Vincente” about the experience.
“Dutch Cigarette” chronicles the non-stop travel from 13 European tours that has
elevated Vonne to playing huge festivals overseas, while the sweet “Karolina” is a
tribute to the children in hospitals in NYC that Vonne would visit and sing to while
a “musician on call”.
“Firebird” is a follow up to 2004’s “Guitars and Castanets” and Vonne’s self titled
debut in 2002 and is a her best work yet and a fine addition to her ever growing
musical legacy.

Guitars & Castanets is the second album by Austin,
Texas-based singer and songwriter Patricia Vonne. Since
releasing her self-titled debut in 2003, Vonne has
rapidly risen within the Texas music scene thanks to an
infectious bilingual mix of the musical styles she
loves that inspired the Austin American-Statesman to
dub her "a Tex-Mex spitfire with a rock'n'roll heart."
Her vibrant stage presence and stirring performances
won her the #2 slot as Best New Live Act in the 2003
Austin Music Pundits Awards.
Produced by Carl Thiel, known for his work with such
Austin musical heroes as Bob Schneider and Monte
Montgomery, Guitars & Castanets features everything
from such stirring rock'n'roll tunes as "Texas Burning"
and "Lonesome Rider" to mariachi-inflected charmers
like "La Gitana de Triana" and "Fiesta Sangria." It
includes tributes to such inspirations as Joe Ely
("Joe's Gone Ridin"), Alejandro Escovedo ("Guitarras y
Castañuelas") and Johnny Reno ("Sax Maniac"), and
counts among its musical guests some of Austin's most
noted players: guitarist Charlie Sexton (hailed for his
work in recent years with Bob Dylan), acclaimed singersongwriter and guitarist Jon Dee Graham, nylon string
guitar wizard Rick Del Castillo (of the rising Austin
Latino rock band Del Castillo), keyboards player
Michael Ramos (known for his work with The BoDeans,
Lucinda Williams and Patty Griffin), bassist Mark Andes
(veteran of such classic rock acts as Spirit, Jo Jo
Gunne and Heart), San Antonio guitarist Joe Reyes (of
Lara & Reyes) and saxophonist Reno (longtime member of
Chris Isaak's band), among others. Rounding out the
collection is the bonus track "Traeme Paz," featured in
the film and on the soundtrack album for "Once Upon A
Time In Mexico."
Vonne attributes her genre-fusing style to growing up
in San Antonio on "my mother's music and my brothers'
record collections." The Spanish folk songs sung by her
mother and Saturday afternoon matinees at San Antonio's
Olmos Theater watching classic movies and MGM musicals
formed the foundation of her aesthetic. But her musical
fate was sealed by her first live concert by Reno and
his band The Sax Maniacs and fed by such favorites as
Ely, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Los Angeles-based Chicano
rockers The Cruzados.
Vonne honed her talents in New York City singing backup and playing bass in the band Mick & The Maelstroms,
and then began writing her own songs after meeting her
creative partner and husband Robert LaRoche at a show
by his band, Virgin recording artists The Sighs, at
Manhattan's China Club. After developing her Tex-Mex
musical brew in New York City and building a following
with gigs at some of Manhattan's premier rock clubs,
Vonne and LaRoche moved to Austin in 2001 to bring her
music back home to Texas.
Releasing her debut album of recordings made in New
York on her own Bandolera Records, Vonne was hailed by
the Austin Chronicle for her "bilingual tour de force
[that] melds eclectic with electric and exudes an
elegance seldom associated with rock." Similarly, Texas
Monthly editor and writer Joe Nick Patoski noted how
her "confidant, tuff gal vocals, sharp musicianship and
smart lyricism don't just promise the total package,
they deliver the goods from the get-go."
Vonne has also become one of the busiest artists on the
Texas live music circuit. In addition to headlining her
own shows, she has opened for a wide range of artists
like Ely, Escovedo, Los Lobos, Raul Malo, Buddy Guy,
Cyndi Lauper, Johnny Lang, Pat Green, Charlie Robison
and Tito & Tarantula (with whom she also toured Europe
with as a special guest musician in 2002). Since the
release of her debut, Vonne has also toured Europe
11 times, appearing in Germany, Austria, France,
Spain, Italy, Holland, Norway and the United Kingdom.
And now with Guitars & Castanets, Vonne celebrates her
return to the state that is her home and all that music
means in her life. "It's a musical reflection of my
heritage," she concludes. "It's my way of giving thanks
to my family, these wonderful musicians that have had
such an impact on me, and all the inspiration and joy
that I've gotten from music since I was a child."
Seven years ago, Patricia Vonne came home chasing a dream.
Embarking upon a career as a singer/songwriter--the perfect outlet
for her varied talents and boundless artistic energy--Vonne
returned to her Texas roots after almost a decade in the Big Apple.
Landing in the state capital, just up the highway from her
childhood home in San Antonio, she and husband/collaborator
Robert LaRoche began the methodical climb from near obscurity
in the vibrant and competitive Austin music scene. Tirelessly
working the Texas club circuit and aided by several noteworthy
appearances at the renowned South by Southwest Music Festival,
Vonne quickly garnered a solid local and statewide following.
In 2002, she released her eponymous debut album, a bilingual gem
that earned universal glowing reviews. Of the record, Austin
American Statesman wrote: "A Tex -Mex spitfire with a rock 'n'
roll heart, this San Antonio native plays a border-crossing,
bilingual mix of flamenco flamboyance and down -in-the-mud
exuberance that's a Lone Star original." Buoyed by the response,
Vonne hit the road even harder to build her rapidly growing fan
base.
In 2004, aware of the unabashed love of pure, dyed-in-the-wool,
authentic Texas roots rock felt by Europeans from one end of the
continent to the other, Vonne began barnstorming the Old World.
Between European tours, she entered the studio to record her
second album Guitars and Castanets in early 2005. Filled with
romantic tales of adventure and heartfelt ballads of life on both
sides of the border—once again delivered in both English and
Spanish--the record dispelled any notion of a sophomore slump
and drew raves. No Depression magazine said flatly: “Guitars and
Castanets is a bold venture dripping with passion and style”
After working the record hard for two years on both sides of the
Atlantic, with an occasional dash south of the border, Vonne went
to work on her third album in late 2006. The result is Firebird, an
eleven-track disc marked by exceptional songwriting and first-rate
musicianship. Highlighted by English and Spanish versions of
“Missing Women,” a moving tribute to the hundreds of murdered
or disappeared women in the town of Juarez, Mexico, Firebird is
another impressive effort for Vonne, typical of her stellar work to
date. Vonne takes to the road once more this fall both here in the
Lonestar State and abroad for her 13th European tour.
