bailey plaza the project group CONNECTICUT STON E Bailey Plaza Cornell University; Ithaca, New York Design by: Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc., Landscape Architects, PC Stone Installers: New York Quarries, Inc., Alcove, NY; Ithaca Stone Setting, Ithaca, NY; Syrstone, Inc., North Syracuse, NY Stone Suppliers: Connecticut Stone, Milford, CT; Tompkins Bluestone, Hancock, NY Connecticut Stone won a prestigious Tucker Award for this project, which converted a oneacre parking lot into a stunning pedestrian plaza connecting Bailey Hall Auditorium to Cornell’s historic Arts and Agriculture quadrangles. Bailey Plaza’s heavily trafficked location in the heart of campus, along with Ithaca’s rugged northeast weather, meant that the construction and design needed to be durable as well as beautiful. We chose natural stone materials that combine classic elegance with environmental versatility. The pivotal architectural element of the plaza is a majestic stone Hamilton bluestone fountain designed to evoke Ithaca’s famous rock quarries. The Bailey Award credited Connecticut Stone with creating richness and warmth with our choice of paving materials, as well as movement and structure with the design. Natural stone works in harmony with water, plants and wood, allowing the space to serve as both an architectural achievement and a practical pedestrian walkway. Stern Architects. Connecticut Stone was proud to facilitate the project, supplying and installing elegant stone to the interiors of these 92 exquisite residences, located in central Stamford, Connecticut. In keeping with the discriminating design of the Highgrove dwellings, a refined assortment of imported Italian and Grecian marble was chosen to create opulent kitchen and bathroom countertops. We used natural stone of the highest caliber to complement the rest of Leslie Schlesinger’s urbane interior décor. At the forefront of Stamford’s transition from a Connecticut industrial suburb to a selfcontained, sophisticated city in its own right, the Highgrove condominiums are both an architectural showpiece and a practical solution to a housing crunch. This prestigious project offered Connecticut Stone an opportunity to showcase our artisanry and extensive knowledge of natural stone. Two hundred years after its inception—thanks to a generous donation by David Rockefeller—the rose garden within the Botanical Garden was renovated to enhance this display of one of the world’s most exquisite collections of flowers. To complement the clusters of rare, exotic and everyday roses, Connecticut Stone was brought in to accentuate the transient and delicate nature of flowers with a balance of permanent natural stone. Native Hudson Valley Bluestone walkways wind throughout the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden and intersect in circular plazas around the central pergola, giving the garden a non-linear, ephemeral feel. THE STONE: Hudson Valley Bluestone, New York schieffelin residence the project group CONNECTICUT STON E New Haven, CT Architect: Douglas Orr Builders: Biltmore Construction Crabtree Construction Stone Supplier: Connecticut Stone, Milford, CT In 1928, prominent Connecticut architect Douglas Orr designed this stunning Georgian masterpiece in New Haven. A few years ago, Elliptipar CEO Allie Schieffelin purchased the property and undertook an ambitious home renovation with Connecticut Stone’s help. The mission of this project was to stay true to the original character and spirit of the house while upgrading its livability to the highest modern standards. Working closely with the owner and builder to uphold their vision, we installed onyx tiles in the bathrooms and custom marble countertops in the kitchen, earning two 2008 HOBI Awards: Best Bath Feature and Best Kitchen Feature. The thoughtful integration of elegant stone detailing into the original wood and brick structural elements (all restored to their full classic beauty) makes for a comfortable traditional home rife with striking contemporary details. The HOBI Awards garnered from this achievement are a testament to Connecticut Stone’s commitment to innovative design with a personal touch. “ Tyra Dellacroce and the Project Group Interior Division helped facilitate the renovation of my historical home with endless patience, expert problem-solving skills and a consistently push the envelope and with their extensive knowledge of natural stone, I would recommend Connectictut Stone for any project.” ALLIE SCHIEFFELIN, CEO, Elliptipar Photos © DAVID OTTENSTEIN THE STONE: Multi-colored Polished Onyx, Persia Greece Ice Green Brushetta Slate, China
