Dart Types
Brass Darts
Brass is the lightest of the three common metallic darts.
It is a soft alloy (copper & zinc) allowing it to be easily
machined. Disadvantages include that they have larger
barrels which contribute to more bounce outs and are
typically softer and less durable.
Nickel Silver Darts
Nickel-Silver is an alloy consisting of nickel, copper and zinc.
It does not contain silver it merely refers to the colour.
Similar to brass, it can be machined but is approximately
twice the price of brass and half the price of tungsten.
Tungsten Darts
Tungsten is a very heavy and dense metal. Tungsten itself is a
powder and is typically mixed with other metals like nickel
to form a tungsten dart barrel. It is harder to work with but
will last typically longer than Brass and Nickel-Silver darts
(especially the knurling). On average, a 24 gram tungsten
dart will be ½ the size of a 24 gram brass dart which will
allow for tighter groupings on the board.

Flights
The size and style of your flights can impact your game. Generally they
come in three shapes. Standard is the most popular and Pear and Kite
shapes provide for better grouping. Dimpled surfaces, for example, will
help slow down and stabilize your darts. Slim and Vortex flights allow for
tighter groupings again but have less balance.
Shafts
Modern dart shafts size is 2Ba. The older dart shaft size is ¼Bsf.
Generally they are made in 3 different lengths: Extra Short 30mm,
Short 35mm and Medium 48mm. Short is the best selling length and
is good for all weights of darts. Generally lighter weight darts
(17g to 21g) will take shorter shafts and heavier will take longer shafts.
The bristle dartboard is the most popular and is of competition quality.
They are made up of compressed sisal fibres (beware of imitation
materials) glued to a backing board, with the edges held by metal
banding. The main advantage of this type of construction is, when you
remove a dart by twisting from the board, the hole will close behind it.
This means bristle dart boards tend to last a lot longer than paper coil
dartboards. Wear will eventually occur to your bristle dartboard, so
look for a removable number ring that will allow you to rotate the most
popular areas so you get even wear on the board.
There are three basic wiring systems: (Spiders) Round Wire, Triangular
Wire and Banded Wire.

Composite Cues
Composite cues have a construction of outer fibreglass with a graphite component for extra strength
and filled accordingly. The filling consists of weights to balance the cue and to give it extra power.
They are finally coated with another gloss fibreglass finish to make them warp resistant. Generally a
lot more effort goes into making composite cues so their life is enhanced greatly due to their
construction. These cues are built to last. They don’t have the same give of natural timber cues and
are less forgiving to the beginner. Remember the stiffer the cue usually the more power you can
generate but your aim is critical to ensure this. Composite cues are usually reserved for the player
with more ability. However good these cues are built they are susceptible to wear and tear and must
be cared and stored correctly in cue case or cue stand.

Timber Cues
Ash is by far the most popular wood for snooker and English pool cues. Maple was traditionally the
only wood used for American pool cues. Maple is denser than ash and does not have the pronounced
grain features of ash. The enhanced grain of ash cues is highly regarded by many players by utilising
the arrow pattern of the wood for aim, but can be distracting for those who prefer the plainer maple.
Generally ash has a better feel and touch to maple but it is personal choice. The natural spring in ash
gives it more response. The stiffer maple is said to have more power for the break. Remember all
natural wood will at some stage warp unless proper care is taken. Ash cues can be bent back, maple
cues cannot. Proper store and care for your wooden cues is crucial. Being a natural fibre they are
susceptible to direct sunlight, moisture and leaning against walls. Correct storage consists of cue
cases or cue stands that store cues straight and this will extend the cues life.

Cue Lengths
Cues vary in length and are still measured in traditional imperial terms.
The shortest cue length is 36” which is made for juniors and tight corners as
is 48”. 54” cues are for young adults and shorter people with 57” being the
most popular and comfortable. 59” & 60” are generally for taller people or
bigger tables where you need the extra length.
Cue Tips
Most snooker players prefer a tip size between 9mm to 10mm. English pool
players tend to use a smaller tip between 8mm to 9mm mainly due to using a
smaller and lighter cue ball. There are many theories about tip size in relation
to the amount of spin you can impart on the cue ball with a smaller tip and how
it is easier to hit the centre of the ball with a bigger tip. It is really down to
personal preference. The amount of spin is mainly down to cue action, timing and
most important a good follow through with the cue after striking the white ball.
The ability to hit the centre of the white consistently is down to your cue action,
a firm bridge, good stance and keeping still on the shot. Tip size does have an
effect on the amount of throw caused by the cue on to the cue ball when using side.
The amount of throw is proportional to the size of the tip i.e. the bigger the tip
the more the cue ball is pushed off line, this amount does vary from cue to cue.
No two cues react exactly the same with regard to throw off.

Table Tennis - Education Corner
Speed, Spin, Control
You will notice that all of our table tennis bats have ratings for speed, spin, and control. Control means how easy it is to
block, return serve, and generally put the ball where you want, but in practice control is mostly just the inverse of speed
and spin. That is, the less speed and spin, the more control. A speed rating below 50 means very good control. From 50-70
is a good all round rating and anything over 70 we consider fast for offensive play.
The thinner the sponge, the better the control, a thicker sponge gives you more speed with less control. It is therefore
possible to slow down a fast bat by using a rubber with thinner sponge. The quick and easy rule is that thicker sponges
(2.0mm or more) results in more offensive play. 1.5mm to 1.9mm are used for more 'control' or all round players while
smaller numbers are common for short and long pipped rubbers.
When you swing at a ball and make contact, the sponge catches the ball and slows it down. As the ball keeps moving into
the sponge and hits the wood underneath, the sponge helps kick the ball back out.

Star Ratings
In determining the Star Rating for each of our bats we have taken in to
consideration all of the unique characteristics in the construction of that
particular bat. Every blade and rubber has a different feel, just because the
ratings are the same for two items, does not mean that they will feel/play
the same. Used in conjunction with the speed, spin, and control ratings we
are confident that you will be able to make the purchasing decision right
for you.
Playing Styles
There are many different playing styles. However, we can broadly categorize
them as defensive, all-round, and offensive.
A player with a defensive style waits for their opponent to miss, e.g., by
chopping or playing push and block.
A player with an all-round style has a balanced game of offense and defence.
The all-round player enjoys rallying and prefers to get the ball on the table
rather than blasting the ball at top speed.
A player with an offensive style is aggressive and tries to control the point.
The offensive player uses heavy topspin, loop kills, and/or smashes to win
the point at the first opportunity.
