Q. How do you manage to keep up
of the last 45 years.
A. I have to say, I don’t believe in retire-

opera, film, on television and has written a bestselling non-fiction book, and is showing no signs of slowing

Q.
It’s interesting that you trained
as an opera singer before turning
to radio. What was the deciding
factor in your choice of careers?
A. As a young person I was very inter-
ested in theatre, particularly musical
comedy. I was in school plays and
active in the drama department when
I wasn’t playing sports, so opera and
voice training seemed like a natural
extension of what I liked to do. At 17,
I became a disc jockey in Edmonton,
but I was still singing seriously at
that time as well, keeping my options
open. In reality, radio was more steady
work and a more stable life, and I’ve
gotten so much out of it, interviewing
amazing acting legends and hosting
my own programs. I feel fortunate to
have had the career I do, and it allowed
me to branch out into other forms of
media like television and film.
Q.
You have been a consistent
advocate of natural health over
the span of your career, what first
got you interested in promoting
this healthy lifestyle?
A. I’ve been doing health shows for
a long time. I started out doing antismoking shows when they were really
unpopular, because most people were
smokers, and a lot of our advertisers
were tobacco companies, so I really had
to fight to put the healthy point of view
out there. Believe me, no one wanted to
hear it. I’m glad that I could be a part of
helping to make the dangers of smoking
known, because less people smoke now
than ever. I also was very interested in
nutrition and eating whole, organic
foods, so I did many shows promoting
healthy eating choices. No one is perfect
of course, and I love a glass of wine, but
balancing is the key to health, so I make
sure that I practice what I preach. I also

I love it. I’ve seen it happen so many
times, that a person finally retires, they
sit around and play golf, and then within
two years they are dead. I don’t know
what it is, but I think work gives the
body purpose. Bringing in the balance
issue again, I also know that you have
to balance work and play, and my wife
Ramona and I certainly love to play and
be active, especially in the outdoors.

We bike down the Galloping Goose Trail,
we hike all over the Island, we go to the
gym, and then we come home and entertain our friends or relax with a good bottle
of wine. I also believe in supporting your

Q.
What is important to you when

A. Well of course I look for something
