Veldkamps earn national pork industry award

Jim and JoAnn Veldkamp, owners of
Veldkamp Farms of Jasper, were recently
announced as one of four swine producers
nationally to be selected as 2008 Pork
Industry Environmental Stewards. Earlier
this year the Veldkamps were honored
as the 2008 Minnesota Environmental
Stewards. This in turn made them eligible
for the national award.
The Pork Checkoff and its cosponsor,
National Hog Farmer magazine, have
awarded this honor to these four U.S.
pork producing operations that have
demonstrated a firm commitment to
safeguarding the environment and the
communities that surround them.
The other recipients are: Enterprise
Nursery of Madrid, Neb.; Oetting Farms
of Concordia, Mo.; and O’Neel Farms of
Friend, Neb.
Award recipients will receive the
recognition of their peers at the 2009
National Pork Industry Forum held in
March 2009 in Dallas, Texas.
Judges drawn from pork producers and
environmental organizations selected the
environmental steward award winners.
The judges reviewed the applications of
pork producers committed to minimizing
the pork industry’s footprint on the
environment.
“Farmers are the original stewards of
the land. It doesn’t pay to do things that are
detrimental to the animals and land. The
ones who win the award are the producers
who go the extra mile and take it personally,”
Dianne Bettin of Truman said last week.
“Those who win the award are exemplary.”
Bettin, who along with her husband
operate a swine operation near Truman,
serves as a board member of the National
Pork Board and is also a past president of
the Minnesota Pork Board.

odor-control strategies; farm aesthetics
and neighbor relations; wildlife habitat

promotion; innovative ideas to protect the
environment and an essay on the meaning
of environmental stewardship,” said
Bettin about the criteria used to select the
winners.
All of these criteria apply to the
Veldkamp’s operation.
Jim and JoAnn operate a modern and
environmentally sound pork production
operation housing 1,800 nursery pigs, 3,600
finishing pigs and 2,400 animals in a new
wean-to-finish barn. The manure from the
pork operation fertilizes a part of the 1,250
acres of corn and soybeans that make it
back to the farm site mill and swine rations.
These processes together complete a full
circle of nutrients.
The farm is adjacent to a heavily
trafficked road and very close to public
property so radiating a positive image is
very important to them. Not only do the
Veldkamps keep up the visual appearance
with great landscaping and well-kept
buildings, but air quality and odor control
measures also are in place at the farm.
General housekeeping includes washing
and disinfecting barns between groups of
animals and constant cleaning and dusting
to reduce the amount of dust emitting
from the operation. Animals are fed diets
according to their weight and gender to
reduce the amount of nutrients wasted,
effluent produced and its associated
challenges. Diets are supplemented with
fat to decrease the amount of feed-related
dust generated. Manure pit additives help
reduce the odor and emissions associated
with storing the effluent and keep the
manure solids in suspension. Trees border
the buildings working as a vegetative buffer
and reducing odor and dust.
Besides being stewards of the land they
farm, the animals they care for and the pork
industry they represent Jim and JoAnn are
also stewards of the community around
them. They both have been volunteer
emergency medical technicians for the
Jasper Community Ambulance Association.
JoAnn since 1987 and Jim since 1989.

Some people make a turn when
they see the landmark orange and
white general store at the corner of
Highways 9 and 86, the northern
gateway to West Okoboji Lake.
Some people pull over and wait
to meet up with others. Some
stop for gas, or for bait, or to fill
up their pantry at the cabin, or to
grab a part or two for their boat or
snowmobile. Some come for the
antique auctions and flea markets
every year. And some just drop by
to show their children the small
“flolly” of cats.
With its classic gas pumps and
at-your-door service, Vick’s Corner
is a picturesque flashback in an
ever-modernizing world. But it still
holds its own as a launching pad
for Iowa Great Lakes adventures.
Its easy-to-spot exterior and
crossroads location aren’t the only
compass it offers. Inside, it has long
offered copies of its own published
map of the lakes’ attractions,
accesses, depths and dangers.
The maps themselves may not
be easy-to-spot, though, shelved in
a corner overflowing with posters
— not that that corner is at all
unique in Layton W. and Dorothy
“Dee” Vick’s retail shop. Other
corners are stacked with visitor’s
guides, phone books, fishing and
hunting manuals and half a dozen
newspapers; shelved with pantry
items; stacked with snacks; chock
full of chilled beverages; lined with
motor oils and parts for all kinds of
recreational vehicles; pinned with
fishing tackle and hunting supplies;
and laden with all the over-thecounter medical essentials.
“We’ve got the whole nine yards,
so to speak,” Layton said.
There’s no room for seating, but
you can get a ready-made sandwich
or the stuff to put one together and
step outside to the bench or picnic
table. Behind the store are open
acres, and you can even camp
at Vick’s Corner, with its full and
electricity-only RV hook-ups.
“We call ourselves a general
store. We were a general store
before Casey’s was ever thought
of,” Layton said.
On the other hand, some patrons
never get out of their vehicles —
the Vicks meet them at the pump,
and sometimes bring out a needed
product or two, if they are having
trouble getting around.
“It takes extra work and extra
time but we feel it’s worth it,”
Layton said.
“We have a lot of clientele, and
a lot we know by first name. We
know what they like and what they
don’t,” Dorothy added.
Their regulars are young and
old, locals and visitors, farmers
and city folk.
“Some have been trading with us
for years. We appreciate that; that’s
what we’re here for,” Layton said.
And the couple is there most
hours in a day and every day of the
year — all but about two hours on
Thanksgiving and Christmas when
they close up to enjoy the holiday
meal.
“People stop in for gas or candy
and say, ‘We’re sure glad you’re still

Prairie Bank in Round Lake for
two years and then transferred to
its Jackson location. He started his
employment with MnWest at the
Jackson campus in February 2005,
joining six other farm management
instructors in the MnWest system.
On July 8 of this year, he was
chosen as the replacement for the
late Harry Gerdes, who had been
working out of the same office in
farm management for more than
40 years.
“We help farmers, our students,
with their marketing decisions
and one of the big things we do
is help them understand their
cost of production,” Benda said.
“Every farmer has the same access
to the same markets. So their
income side is basically the same
as everyone else. It is the cost side
where they can affect things a lot
and be competitive in farming by
making good decisions regarding
their finances.”

Breeding Herd Education Series

now being taken for the next year
of the program, which will begin
November 5.
The
distance
learning
program is designed for owners,
employees, technicians, managers
and technical service providers
involved in managing or caring
for boars, sows and/or their litters.
Several Extension programs have
developed this program.
Presentations are mailed on a
CD to participants one week prior
to the program. Participants follow
along with the presentations on
their computer while listening
to the presenter via a toll-free
telephone line. “Many breeding/
gestation units have had employees
view and listen over their noon
break, using a speaker telephone,”
states Whitney.

A lot of them come into our office and work on their
own records right here as far as inputting things on
the computer. Tammy Ling, who had worked with
Harry for many years in this office, actually will work
doing the inputting of information on the computer
for the students for a fee. Her’s is a separate little
business here.”
The present MnWest Farm Management Program
started at the high school level back in the 1950s and
‘60s. As the community colleges were established,
the program was brought to that level thanks to the
Minnesota State College and Universities system’s
efforts, according to Benda.
“The first thing we do is get the records of the
farmers so we can get a handle on what their actual
costs are,” Benda said. “Some keep track of records in
a big account book, while some now use computers
to do that. After we establish a marketing plan for our
students that they can use all year long, we start in
the fall helping them complete tax estimates prior
to their year-end and coordinate that with the tax
professional they choose to work with. In January,
we complete an annual financial statement for our
students with accurate and complete verified account
balances so they know where they are. Then, starting
in February through March, we help them complete a
detailed analysis of all their cash transactions for the
year and do a complete analysis of their entire farm
enterprise.”
In March and April, Benda works with his students
to determine a standard of efficiencies and looks at
opportunities to improve those efficiencies.
April is also the month when he helps his students’
benchmark themselves against state-wide cohort
groups to gain a competitive edge in their operation.
That is followed by a review of the prior year’s plan
and completion of a new cash flow based off the prior
year’s analysis to formulate a projected cash flow for
the upcoming year.
Benda also helps his students establish some formal
goals for their operations during the year, which can
include instruction in basic use of computer programs
and assistance with the conversion to computerized
record keeping.
Additionally, throughout the year, Benda helps his
students in developing risk management skills.
“The bankers appreciate the services we provide
our students,” Benda said. “In Martin County, just to
the east of Jackson County, they provide scholarships
for farmers to be in the program. Doing this record
keeping gives the farmer a starting and ending point
and a better understanding of their operation.”
But how have local farmers been affected by all the
upheavals in the financial markets?
“This farming area is a little bit buffered from
the rest of the world,” Benda said. “Typically we are
either the first to be in a recession or the last into it.
Margins are changing this year, so we are looking at
our providing more of our services.”
Benda termed this year “kind of a weird year.”
“The farmers got a really good yield last year and
the price this year was very high,” he said. “So, with
a high yield and a high price they sold their grain
and paid down their operating loans from that. So
for most of the year the banks were kind of hurting
for operating loans. They were typically planning on
a farmer coming in and borrowing $100,000 to buy
their seed and their chemicals. Since they had extra
money, the farmer didn’t have to do that.”
But, he added, the input prices have gotten so out
of whack.
“They basically have doubled and tripled in five
years,” he said. “So now the farmers were buying
2009 inputs in the summer of 2008 and repositioning
themselves to get loans back on the books. The
problem with that is anytime a banker loans two years
of inputs in one year they are putting themselves at
risk because they don’t know how the farmer is going
to look at the end of this year. You have a pretty good
idea that they are going to be fine, but at the same
time, you don’t want to extend credit beyond this
year because you don’t know if you are going to have
to sell the guy out. That is the risk the banks have on
lending money on 2009 inputs. The farmer and the
banker know the input costs if the farmer pays the
elevator in 2008 for those costs ahead of time, but
if they wait until the spring of 2009, the input costs
might go up.”
His advice?
“My advice to farmers is that they have got to stay
on top of their costs,” Benda said. “They have got to
know where they are as far as their costs and their tax
situation. A lot of guys are saying, ‘I just have to get
through this year as far as taxes go.’ They are having
a hard time keeping their income down, so they are
not paying a lot of taxes because they are seeing next
year that the margins are getting so tight that it is not
going to be as much of a worry to them tax-wise for
next year. The profits they made this year that they are
trying to spread out and not pay taxes on are going to
be eaten up next year because the input costs have
risen so much. A lot of guys think that we are just here
to help them with their record keeping. They don’t
realize that we get into the cost side of knowing just
where they are at.”
Benda is married to wife Amanda and they have
two children, Christian, 3, and Ryle, 8 months.

So the Vicks have gone to great
lengths to ensure their landmark
remains unchanged, including
milling its own siding from a pattern,
necessitated by hail damage. They
have even considered listing it on
the National Register of Historic
Places.
“To be an open and operating
business, we couldn’t do it. There
are too many things you can’t do,”
Layton said.
The biggest changes have been
Vick’s Corner’s relocations. The
store has rotated around the
intersection several times, at every
new reconfiguration of the busy
byways.
For the future, the Vicks hope
to continue to be predictable and
reliable.
“I like doing what I’m doing. I like
people, and I don’t have plans to do
anything different,” Layton said.
“... When people wonder about my
retirement, I ask ‘What does that
mean?’ I see people who retire and
don’t do much of anything and two
years later, they’re dead. That tells
you something. And I always joke
with people, if I retired now, the
bank would get upset.”
