Unique: In the 1950s, the DB coupled a single-axle trailer to
the rail bus. Märklin now produces this unique combination
of VT 95.9 and VB 141.2 as a second exclusive H0 Club model
for 2016.

Attractively gruesome: The rascal Märklomas decorates the 2016 H0 Annual Car for the Märklin
Start up Club. Although the fictitious design of the car, also produced for Insiders, is fascinating, the prototype is also worth a look: In the center-discharge hopper car, for unloading either
end is hydraulically raised.
Wanderlust: The

Always on the move: The VB 141 254 baggage trailer is an exciting new design, and
combined with the rail bus VT 95 9165 it represents the second Club model for 2016 in H0.

Are you moving?
Dear
Märklin Insiders,
The single-axle baggage trailer for rail buses went down in federal railroad
history as a charming episode, and Märklin retells it for Club members with a
further exclusive H0 Club model for 2016. Design of the trailer is a little
miracle and the accompanying VT 95.9 is electronically state-of-the-art. You
will learn a lot more in this issue than just the full story of the prototype of this
unique Club combination: The Märklin Start up Club’s H0 Annual Car is also
presented, with its original color scheme. Then our poster page “Technology
in detail” illustrates how remarkable the detailing of Märklin models is: All the
working steps and machine functions associated with the preparation of
a steam loco for work can be followed in the model of 95 006.
In a one-off clearance sale, the Club is disposing of its remaining stock of
Annual Cars. We want to make room for the new Märklin Museum and we are
thus offering Club members a limited number of cars. Another special event
will be the Club’s second trip of 2016: We head for the magnificent city of
Vienna and surroundings; special trains will take us through the Waldviertel
and Weinviertel regions, and a trip to the Märklin factory in Györ is the
crowning glory.
In the service section you will find a list of dates for the digital info days, and
we also introduce, appropriately enough for the new Club model, cooperation
partners with rail bus activities and finally report on a special Club discount
campaign by the VGB Verlagsgruppe Bahn. Finally, there is the range of
Märklin seminars for the second half of 2016 for all those who want to learn
more about loco assembly, layout planning, decoder installation and digital
operations. Enjoy reading your Club News!

A must-attend event in September: Open Days at Märklin
This is what you can look forward to at the Open Days in
Göppingen: First-hand information on the production process,
meeting with other Insiders and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
On the Märklin Open Days, many thousands of model railroaders from around the world always gather in Göppingen,
Germany – this year are for the celebration of the start of fall the
Märklin plant (Stuttgarter Str. 55–57) and the Märklin Museum
(Reutlinger Str. 2) will be open to the public on September 16 and
17, 2016. Many Club members used the Open Days as a welcome

dearest, as a host of special events mean that the Open Days are
a family-friendly two-day celebration. The traditional special car
in H0 to mark Märklin’s Open Days is this year dedicated to the
plastic injection molding department. Further information on
the event will follow in issue No. 04/2016. märklin insider news 3.2016

Historic combination: The VT 98 901 – a twin-motor VT 95.9 prototype test unit for the production VT 98 – seen here in Passau,
Germany on March 18, 1956 pushing its VB 141. For its second
H0 Club model for 2016 Märklin is producing the VT 95 9165
paired with VB 141 254.
EXCLUSIVELY FOR INSIDERS IN H0: VT 95.9 WITH SINGLE-AXLE BAGGAGE TRAILER VB 141.2
A unique consist
Impressive couple: For the first time Märklin couples the
single-axle VB 141 baggage trailer to a VT 95.9 rail bus.
Priority for this highly unusual 1950s consist is reserved for
Club members: It will be produced exclusively as the second
Club model for 2016 in H0.
T
he rail bus – everyone recognizes it, and it brings
back sentimental memories to those who rode the
train to work or school in the 1950s. “This rail bus
triggers emotions”, proclaims Karl-Heinz Gräßle,
product manager H0 at Märklin, recalling conversations with Club members. Accordingly, the VT 95,
this well-loved Märklin classic, is regularly re-released in a technically updated version. “In 2016 this is being done exclusively
for Club members”, adds Karl-Heinz Gräßle, speaking of this
second Club model release for 2016 in H0. “And because originality and uniqueness are significant factors in the choice of our
exclusive models this time we are complementing this secondary
line train model with something of an oddity: By combining a
VT 95.9 with the class VB 141 single-axle baggage trailer we are
modeling a fondly remembered era of the German Federal Railroad”. This is the premiere for the baggage trailer in the Märklin
range – and it is reserved exclusively for Club members.
6
An unmanned car for baggage and large items – that is how
Bernhard Hümmelchen, documentarist at Märklin, describes
the trailer. The aluminum-clad VB 141 traces its origins back to
a similar design for the “Gläserner Zug” (“Glass train”) of the
1930s. Switzerland also saw a solitary example for ski transportation for use with the “Roter Pfeil” (“Red Arrow”) train operated
by the SBB (Swiss Federal Railroads). The appearance on the DB
(German Federal Railroad) in the early 1950s of the single-axle
baggage trailer coincided with efforts at that time to improve
the profitability of secondary lines through the introduction of
the class VT 95. “Lightweight rail diesel cars are more quickly
readied for duty on low-volume routes than locomotive-hauled
trains, they are much more economical to operate than steam
traction and they require fewer employees to operate them”
explains rail expert Bernhard Hümmelchen, accentuating the
efficiency argument. This trailer design was developed to carry
baggage, bicycles, packages and other light freight items which
märklin insider news 3.2016
Passing the test: Quality control
includes test running
The model VB 141 254 is coupled with the VT 95 9165 by means of
a special coupling bar. “The lighting feed for the baggage
trailer is taken from the H0 rail car through a new design 2-pole
connection using the standardized coupler pocket”, explains
Märklin designer Johanna Fritz. So the LED lights change over
between red and white depending on the travel direction.
“We tested the running quality of the consist when pushing the
baggage trailer very early on during the developmental stage”,
assures Thomas Schork, responsible for quality control at
Märklin. “Automatic light changeover only makes sense if the
baggage trailer can safely operate through critical turnout configurations in pushed mode.” For quality control purposes testing
involved a gray colored fully working baggage trailer test model
together with a class 798 rail bus and a class 998 control car
(item 39980). “The design worked really well with the reworked
model”, says Thomas Schork enthusiastically. “We were able to
run the consist at full speed right through the ‘obstacle course’
without any problem.”
Thomas Schork, quality control
manager at Märklin: “Layout operation
of the 2016 Club model baggage trailer
is trouble free.”
Testing in progress: The basic design of the baggage trailer was subjected at an early stage to test running through turnouts – the
test model still lacked some details, such as lights. Power is provided here by a VT 98. The finely reproduced trailer model passed
the test with flying colors.
would otherwise clog up the rail bus passenger accommodation.
“And the odd milk can no doubt found its way in there, too!”
adds the documentarist.
“Seven of these trailers, numbered VB 141 200 – 206, were built
from 1952 onwards and without front/rear integral lights. The
50 units that followed on from 1955 were built with integrated front/rear lights”, continues Bernhard Hümmelchen. “We’re
producing the VT 95 9165 in the crimson livery it carried in
1955, to go with the single-axle baggage car VB 141 254 of the
same period.” The prototype for this car was based at the Steinbeck engine terminal of the German Federal Railroad’s Wuppertal division; it entered revenue service on 10/27/1955. “The
main series class members were however not only deployed in
the Ruhr Region but could be found throughout the whole of
western Germany – from Lübeck to Rosenheim and from Letmathe to Hof.” With the introduction in the mid-1960s of the

series of matching unpowered rail bus cars for the VT 95 class
the single-axle cars finally became obsolete.
Operating the VB 141 was a hands-on affair. Before coupling
up, the car was first of all stabilized on the track by means of
its own legs fore and aft; it was then attached to the rail bus
power car using the Scharfenberg couplers. “For the return trip
the rail bus either ran round the trailer or simply pushed it”,
explains product manager Karl-Heinz Gräßle. The Club

The prototype: The Club model for
2016 reproduces the VB 141 254
(above). The two end legs keep
the unattached single-axle
baggage trailer level.
Hatch doors open: The trailer could carry up to eight bicycles plus baggage.
The Club model is loaded with five bicycles and three items of baggage.
➞ model can be operated in pushed mode – or if preferred, it
can be manually decoupled and allowed to stand, supported by
its legs. The complete consist offers many operating scenarios.
“For the first time, the mfx+ digital decoder is now installed
in the VT 95.9 – this allows the model to operate on the new
Märklin “World of Operation” system, while the new Märklin
decoder generation allows control over 21 operational, sound
and light functions”, adds the product manager. “In addition,
the smaller speaker now allows a see-through rail bus power
car interior, a first for the VT 95.9. And it’s worth taking a peek
inside to see the 15 seated passengers.”
The star of the combination is, however, the completely
reworked VB 141 254. “This baggage trailer really is cute – it’s
an operational masterpiece, with its electrical and mechanical
functionality”, highlights Karl-Heinz Gräßle. “On each side there
are three working hatch doors, just like on the prototype; when
opened, they reveal five bicycles and three items of baggage.” The
lighting can also be controlled, giving red tail lights when being
towed and white headlights when pushed (See also page 24).
“The VB 141 is color matched to the rail bus – and the car body
lettering is just as authentically reproduced”, says documentarist
Bernhard Hümmelchen, who is also keen to draw our attention
to the technical inscriptions reproduced on the rail bus itself.
“Rail buses were something new to railroad employees, too. For
example, to avoid mistaken use, the fillers were all clearly identified. So on the VT 95 9165 we find labeling for the fuel tank, for
the motor coolant, for lubrication as well as for the rest room
water supply.”
Combined with the VB 141, the VT 95.9 will be yet another Club
members’ layout highlight – a Club special that will set itself
apart through its originality as well as its mechanical and digital
operational scope. Text: Rochus Rademacher

Model: The rail bus has an mfx+ digital decoder and extensive
sound and light functions. In addition to the usual sound
functions, various conversations between passengers (dialog),
sounds of the trailer car load doors being opened and closed,
and sounds of the trailer car being loaded (background
sounds) can also be activated by means of the function
buttons. The rail bus motor car has controlled high-efficiency
propulsion with a flywheel. 2 axles powered. Traction tires.
The rail bus has factory-installed interior lighting. The rail bus
has dual headlights and dual red marker lights that change
over with the direction of travel, will work in conventional
operation, and can be controlled digitally. The headlights at
the Engineer’s Stand 2 and 1 of the motor car can be turned off
separately. Dual red marker lights on the single-axle trailer car
are on and they change over with 2 white lights depending on
the direction of the motor car. Maintenance-free warm white
and red LEDs are used for the headlights, marker lights, and
interior lighting. The rail bus units have a current-conducting
drawbar coupling and a guide mechanism between them.
The engineer’s stands and the car’s interiors in the motor car
allow an open view through the windows. The motor car comes
from the factory with a figure of a motor man and numerous

MÄRKLIN START UP CLUB: H0 ANNUAL CAR FOR 2016
Coal for beginners
The Märklin Start up Club Annual Car 2016
hasn’t just got a bloodcurdling
color scheme: Its coal load
can even be removed.
A
n unusual type of freight car is prototype for the
Märklin Start up Club’s 2016 H0 Annual Car.
“The type El-u 061 gondola car is a two-axle
center-discharge hopper car”, explains Nadine
Sindlinger-Neufer, Start up Product Manager
at Märklin. “The two halves of the car from the
two-leaf side-wall doors can be raised hydraulically and the load
slides to the center, where it is unloaded on a conveyor belt.” The
Annual Car is laden with coal, though the insert can be removed
so that you can load the El-u 061 with other commodities too.
world of professional Märklin products where the level of detail is enhanced.” Apart from that, the Start up rolling stock is
compatible with the specialist models. The 2016 Annual Car for the Start up Club picks up as a special
color scheme a mysterious Club figure: the rascally Märklomas,
who gets up to mischief in the comics and Club online games.
Equally bloodcurdling is the design of the dark freight car with
the stylized face of Märklomas and the Club name in a gruesome
red font – a dramatic contrast to last year’s Annual Car, which
was a white container car. The Start up Club Annual Car is also
available to Märklin Insiders; the order form is enclosed with
this mailing.
The Märklin Start up product range caters for children of six years and older and for adults returning to the hobby. According to Product
Manager Nadine Sindlinger-Neufer, “Start up
stands for an uncomplicated start into the model
railroad world, with a seamless transition into the

Technology in detail
Steam means power – and this is highlighted by
the fine detail and digital functions of the H0 Club
model of engine 95 006 (item 39095), known as
the “Bergkönigin” (Queen of the Mountains) of
the grades.
Getting up steam: Water is injected into the boiler and the fireman
stokes up the fire in the firebox –
after 5 hours the temperature
reaches over 1000 degrees
Celsius (1800 °F). The smoke and
hot gases pass through tubes in
the boiler and the water begins
to boil.

Digital function:

The engineer in the cab
operates the throttle
valve by means of the
throttle lever – steam
flows from the dome to
the cylinders. The valve
gear on the locomotive
enables the engineer
to control its speed and
direction.

The connecting rod (coming from the right in
the image) is attached to its bearing on the
driving axle, so powering it. Opposite where
the connecting rod is attached to the wheel
is the balance weight. The connecting rod
bearing is also shared by the coupling rod.

The coupling rod extends to its
bearing on the final driving wheel,
thus distributing the tractive effort.

What goes on on the fireman’s side
Digital functions: Bell, water
pump, injector
Steam collects in the dome,
the highest point on the
boiler it can reach.
Used steam needs to be replaced.
The feed pump (image: right, by
smokebox door) draws water from
the water tanks and pumps it into the
pre-heater, which on the 95 006 is
located across the locomotive frame.
It then passes through the check
valve to the feedwater dome (located
behind the smokestack) and into the
boiler. Above the feed pump: the bell.
2
The tank loco has drafthook couplers
located at each end which are
anchored to the frame. They transmit
the traction force to the train. The
drafthook has lateral play, just like
on the prototype. This feature has
been reproduced on the model.
Digital function: Smoke
unit control
The exhaust steam from the cylinders moves in short bursts
up through the blast pipe into the smokebox. As it escapes
through the smokestack the exhaust steam creates a
vacuum in the smokebox which draws air from the firebox,
thereby providing draft to keep the fire going.
Digital function:
Air pump
A twin air pump creates the compressed air required
to operate the train’s brakes. The connecting hoses
for this are located at the buffer beams.
Digital function: Dual
headlights
Digital function:
Brake squealing off
Digital function: Let off
steam
A rod from the cab operates the expansion link,
which is attached to the frame and the slide bar.
The radius bar controls the steam chest admission
and exhaust ports. The expansion link is kept in
motion through linkages with the connecting rod.
5
Steam enters the cylinder in
which it alternately pushes
against the piston at each
end, causing the piston rod
attached to it to move fore
and aft.
At the end of the valve stem is the
crosshead, which transmits power
from the horizontally moving piston
rod to the reciprocating connecting
rod.

CLUB TRIP TO AUSTRIA 2016: SPECIAL TRAINS AND A DAY TRIP TO SEE THE MÄRKLIN FACTORY IN GYÖR
Waldviertel, Vienna
and Factory Visit
Historic tramcar, homely lines through the forest and alongside
the Danube – the Club trip to Austria in 2016 is full of contrasts.
And an excursion will take us to the Märklin factory in Hungary.
V
ienna, Weinviertel and Waldviertel with steam
and historic trains – and all with this year’s wine:
The Club travels to Austria from October 2 to 9
2016, including an excursion to Hungary to be
taken on a guided tour of the Märklin factory in
Györ. “Originally, the Semmering line was also
in the program, but the planned round trip is not possible this
year” says Gregor Sutter, reporting the alteration. The rail specialist, with whom the Club is running the tour, has arranged
rooms for Club members in a four-star hotel in Vienna, right
near the brand-new main station. “The day after we arrive, we
visit the state rooms in Schloss Schönbrunn and then we enjoy a
sightseeing trip of the city in a historic tramcar.” There is another
highlight on day three of the trip: We travel by train to Györ, near
the frontier, where Club members will see the production facility
in the Märklin factory. There follows the first of the exclusive
Club special trips, where everyone is guaranteed a window-seat.
“On day four we travel to Krems on an historic train with
diesel loco and continue along the picturesque Donauuferbahn
to Spitz on the Danube and then back to Burg Dürrnstein

and along the Kamp valley line to Sigmundsherberg”, says
Gregor Sutter as he enumerates the stations. An electric loco will
then take the Club to Gmünd on the Czech Republic border, for
an overnight stop. “The large pieces of luggage stay in the hotel
rooms in Vienna – we are only away for one night.”
about a day in Vienna. “In the morning, we tour the Technical
Museum’s railway section, and the afternoon is free to do your
own thing, or come with us on the city tour ‘The Third Man’
through classic Vienna.” The last port of call is the Weinviertel.
An extra car for the Club will be added to a steam special train
which will run through the wine-growing region to Ernstbrunn.
Once back in Vienna, a farewell dinner is on the schedule and
next morning, a Railjet or ICE train will be waiting at the station
to take the Club members home.
Day five of the trip is devoted to the two 760 mm-gauge lines of
the Waldviertel Railroad. “Our own special train steams through
dense and extensive forest on serpentine lines with grades up to
2.8 percent to Gross Gerungs, and we return on the ‘Waldviertel
Semmering’ to Gmünd”, says Gregor Sutter, sketching out
the first route. We travel to Litschau and back on the second
narrow-gauge line, then return to Vienna on the Franz-Josefs
line. “As usual on Club trips, we will be making lots of
photographic stops – after all, the members will all be wanting
to photograph the trains themselves.”
“Prater, coffee houses, Wiener Schnitzel and pastries – it would
be just too bad to leave these out”, says our tour leader, telling us

The second H0 Club model, the VT 95.5/VB 141, evokes memories

partners the popular rail bus can still be experienced live.
T
he success story of the single-motor VT 95.9 – and
later of the twin-motor VT 98.9 – begins in the 1950s
on secondary routes. Today you can still see the
Uerdingen rail buses in museums or on heritage railroads. The wide, all round windows allowing a clear
view of the world passing by outside were a popular
feature, and passengers could also enjoy watching the engineer at
work and see the line ahead.
Club cooperation partners include the Berliner Eisenbahnfreunde
(Berlin Railroad Fan Club) located in 16348 Wandlitz, Germany,
who also operate their own rail bus. Club members qualify for
a specially discounted fare on production of a valid Club card
(see www.berliner-eisenbahnfreunde.de). The VT 95 9396 was

the fun really begins: a class VT 98 Uerdingen rail bus of 1950s

Bochum-Dahlhausen to Duisburg, passing through Essen and

Technical marvel: The
single-axle baggage trailer
The second H0 Club model for 2016 (item 39952) combines the
class VT 95.9 rail bus with the VB 141.2 single-axle baggage trailer.
The latter is a technically unique construction, both mechanically
and electrically.

Electronic detail: Both rear end lights (see image
below left) receive the command for head or tail
lighting – depending on travel direction – from the
red or white LEDs in the rail car. The wiring is taken
via a new design of two-pin connector (right) from
the coupler to the axle, from there up to the upper
hinge axis and then on to the end board with the
LEDs.
Mechanical detail: The three folding hatches on each side
are double hinged for opening as on the original. The
hatches are retained in the open position by their own
weight and by friction; when closed, a spring on the hatch
engages a recess on the trailer.
