DESK PRESIDENT FROM THE OF THE Wow! What a great year we’re having and we’re only a few months into it. The board and I are more energized than ever to continue my quest to make the PCDA the best it can be! Dr. Matt Dennis’ presentation on “Anticoagulation Therapy in Dentistry” was one of the best clinically applicable lectures I’ve heard in a long time. It alone was worth the price of our yearly dues. Although I’m pleased with our recent efforts to attract new members, I want to do more to add to our membership roster. Unfortunately, 45% of practicing dentists in South Pinellas County are not part of organized dentistry. This number is unbelievable and inexcusably high. Do nearly half of all dentists in our area not understand the importance of a unified voice when it comes to protecting our profession, especially in this time of health care reform and increased government regulation? Let’s reach out to this uninformed population and expose them to the benefits of organized dentistry. Make the call to the new dentist down the street and extend an invitation to the next meeting. Specialists, use your marketing skills to tout the advantages of being a PCDA member when wooing a potential new referral. Like I’ve said before, if we’re not the ones interested in protecting our profession, then who is? We need to ramp up our efforts to get this 45% number down to zero! ☛ Come and bring a potential new member to our joint meeting with UPCDA on Wednesday, November 13th at 6:00 pm. Please note the change in venue! This meeting will be held at the Hilton St. Petersburg, Carillon Park. Dr. William Layman will present “Useful Orthodontic Tools when Planning Restorative Cases”. A presentation no one should miss. Don’t forget to RSVP. You can simply hit REPLY to this email. Include your name and the potential new member you’ll be bringing. I’m proud to announce the service-oriented side of our PCDA is shining brighter than I can remember in recent years! We were able to award another PTEC scholarship just this month thanks to our member’s generous support. The PCDA Mission is thriving and will be extending services at the PTEC campus soon. The planning for GKAS has started and is looking very promising for an increase in participation this year. The Florida Mission of Mercy (MOM) Program planning is in full swing and will need our support. Remember to sign up ASAP on their website www.flamom.floridadental.org. They need over 300 dentists and more than 1,000 support volunteers to treat over 1,600 patients on March 28-29, 2014! This will be one for the record books. As always, your board and I are available to you. Email or call me if you have any questions, concerns or comments. Glen 727-515-7885 [email protected] Do you have a colleague or a friend who is not a member of PCDA? Invite them to our next meeting on November 13th at The Hilton St. Petersburg Carillon Park or have them contact Kelsey at [email protected] or Dr. Susan Hudak Boss at [email protected] at for more information about attending meetings or becoming member. Nominations will be announced at the November 13, 2013 joint meeting. www.keeppinellasfluoridated.org www.wcdental.org www.floridadental.org www.ada.org www.floridasdentistry.gov IMPORTANT INFORMATION HIPAA Email Communications Dentist email communications with patients may be affected by new HIPAA rules. Under the new rule, if the patient requests that the information be provided in an unencrypted email, the dental practice may be required to provide the information that way if the practice has advised the patient of the risk that the email might be accessed by an unauthorized third party and the patient still prefers to receive the information in an unencrypted email. HIPAA requires that covered dental practices implement reasonable safeguards, including reasonable procedures, to ensure that the practice correctly enters the email address. The practice is not responsible for the email while in transit nor once is it delivered to the patient. A dental practice would be prudent to consult qualified legal counsel to determine whether it is covered by HIPAA and how to respond to patient requests in compliance with applicable state and federal law. Americans have been visiting the dentist less frequently and spending less money on their oral health, according to the ADA Health Policy Resources Center. These habits may be pushing the profession into a new normal when it comes to total U.S. dental spending, HPRC said in an environmental scan of the dental care sector titled “A Profession in Transition: Key Forces Reshaping the Dental Landscape.” “Using various modeling scenarios, the results indicate that dental spending will remain fairly flat in the coming decades—a departure from the decades of historically robust growth in the dental economy,” according to the scan. “Clearly, the economic recovery, when it does finally kick into gear, may not bring back the dental spending growth many are anticipating.” “The findings from this scan have shown considerable change is taking place in dentistry,” ADA President Robert Faiella said. “Dentists are facing significant challenges in their practices and business models. They may think it’s because of the economic recession, but it’s really a change in the dental landscape as a whole. The ADA is here to help dentists navigate and adjust to those changes and look at them as opportunities.” Click here to view the full article and findings. To read the full environmental scan and to watch a video explaining the report, visit ADA.org/escan. Center For Professional Success The ADA Center for Professional Success is live on the web and available to help members navigate the challenges of being a dentist. The Center, located at Success.ADA.org, is a one-stop shop for dentists who are seeking resources that will help them succeed as dental practitioners and small business owners. This new member benefit will help dentists find solutions to professional and personal challenges. The website includes everything from tips for choosing a career path to balancing personal and professional lives to planning for retirement. Read full article here. Once again, PCDA will be collecting new toys for the TOYS FOR TOTS annual campaign at the December 4th meeting. PINELLAS TECHNICAL EDUCATION CENTER Dental Assisting Program is Alive and Well I would like to share a great success story with everyone and thank you for your help. The dental assistant program at Pinellas Technical Education Center (PTEC) is flourishing! Currently there are 38 students enrolled in the program with a 98% hire rate. There are many reasons for this success, but two main reasons are your support and the fact that PTEC turns out some of the best trained assistants in the field. When we as dentists sit down next to a patient, a good assistant makes us look like well-oiled machines. A poorly trained assistant makes us look like – well, something else. We need good assistants. The program needs our support. So what can you do? It’s simple. One, talk to your patients about the rewarding profession of dental assisting and inform them of the opportunity PTEC offers. Two, hire assistants from the program. There are nine students ready to graduate in December. Lastly, donate to the dental assisting scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to students in need. If you know of somebody you would like to nominate for a scholarship or if you are looking for an assistant, just contact Dawn Smith, PTEC’s spectacular head instructor at [email protected]. Thank you again for your continued support. Anthony J. I can’t thank the PCDA enough for helping with my love for dental assisting. I will strive to be the best and can’t wait to be out in the dental world working! Ms. Justine North – Justine North PCDA Mission Makes Advances Your PCDA Mission is a motivational train! We are extending our volunteer program to PTEC to accommodate more of the Free Clinic patients in need of dental work. We will initially work one Friday per month from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., and the dental assisting students will be there to lend a hand. (They will be training in the areas of reception, assisting, radiographs, and sterilization.) We are planning to have a hygienist there as well. All five chairs will be utilized, and with PTEC’s outstanding head instructor, Dawn Smith, things will flow smoothly. Dawn just recently received approval to submit estimates for new flooring and all L:R – Chris Lee, Kelly Dixon, Dawn Smith, Ronda Russick, Claudia Rosas and new cabinetry in their clinic, which we’re hoping to be completed prior to our first Dr. Amy Anderson clinic, February 2014. As we have done in the past, Claudia Rosas from the Free Clinic, will continue to schedule these patients for us. Once again, all we need is for one doctor to show up each clinic and treat eight patients. You will be busy and all chairs will be filled! Chris Lee, Ronda Russick, Claudia Rosas, and I met with Dawn Smith and her new (soon-to-be full time) co-instructor, Kelly Daxon, to take inventory at PTEC. Besides disposables, the only request they have is for a cavitron and/or cavitron tips. If you have one you do not need, please consider donating it to this fantastic cause. Otherwise, we are good to go! Please contact myself or Claudia if you’d like to volunteer. This mission is a win-win for ALL those involved!
