“ Coming together is a beginning;
Keeping together is progress;
Working together is success.”
HENRY FORD
Dearest Friends, Staff and Residents,
Together we can change lives.
We can improve childhood literacy so that children living in Westlawn
and Milwaukee’s northwest side have a chance at long-term success. We
can prevent teen pregnancy, substance abuse, violence and crime.
We can improve food security. We can increase employment among
African American males, particularly those with felony convictions.
With your support last year, we helped 3,517 youth, 3,217 adults, 377

seniors and more than 1,000 families move closer to self-sufficiency. In
Silver Spring helped 8,000 youths,
adults, seniors, and families last year
this report, you’ll learn about how, together, we are changing lives. You’ll
meet Tim, who overcame a speech delay, which jeopardized his ability to
learn to read, Imari, who got a second chance after being convicted of a
crime and David, who discovered a new future as a promising athlete.
Steve Jobs once said, “The people who are crazy enough to think they
can change the world are the ones who do.” On behalf of everyone
touched by Silver Spring, thank you for your support and for believing that
we can change our world — together.
Sincerely,

From our Executive Director
I believe in our community, and I believe in our children. Everyone
who lives in Westlawn and the surrounding community has great
potential. You and I can help these individuals reach their
potential and lead self-sufficient lives.
Albert Einstein said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same
thinking we used when we created them.” In keeping with his
words, we have to think differently and act differently to solve the
problems on Milwaukee’s northwest side.
Please take a moment to envision a community in which
children—particularly those labeled as “at-risk”—have access to

high-quality education at their neighborhood schools. Envision that
these children get the tools they need to go to college and become
self-sufficient adults.
At Silver Spring, we are taking ownership of the educational
process for children living in our community. Through Westlawn
WINS (Working to Improve Neighborhood Success), we are
streamlining our current programs and strengthening our
partnerships to create a “conception to career” pipeline that
ALBERT EINSTEIN
supports on-going academic achievement and success.
Thanks to you, our current programs help thousands of individuals
and families. Together, our impact can only get stronger.
In Partnership,

Meet Tim
TIM’S CHALLENGE
3-year-old Tim was diagnosed with a severe speech delay, which
seriously jeopardized his ability to enter school with an ageappropriate reading level. The third grade reading mark predicts longterm success in school (graduation), work (securing employment) and
self-sufficiency (ability to earn family sustaining income).
SILVER SPRING IN ACTION
“ It is easier to build
strong children
than to repair broken men.”
FREDERICK DOUGLASS
Silver Spring’s Elaine Schreiber Child Development Center helped
Tim’s family recognize his needs and get him the therapy he needed.
TIM’S RESULTS
Today, Tim speaks in full sentences and is on track to reaching his
developmental and academic goals for today and the future.

Meet David
DAVID’S CHALLENGE
12-year-old David was troubled; he missed a lot of school and
disrupted class whenever he did attend.
SILVER SPRING IN ACTION
When David joined Silver Spring’s youth program, he continued
displaying disruptive behavior. But, by engaging David in our
comprehensive basketball program and surrounding him with positive
role models, he develop a new sense of self-worth.
DAVID’S RESULTS
Today, 15-year-old David is the state’s top-ranked basketball player who
is on his way to earning a scholarship to a prestigious university.

Meet Imari
IMARI’S CHALLENGE
Before coming to Silver Spring, Imari had been convicted of a
misdemeanor for driving with a suspended license. He spent nine
months in jail and lost his job as a successful car salesperson.
SILVER SPRING IN ACTION
Imari came to Silver Spring’s employment program hoping for a
second chance. With our training, he earned his construction license
